Hey
Great to see another kiwi in the art forums! You have some cool photos :)

Thanks. I'm not actually a Kiwi, though ...
I'm originally from the States. Philadelphia to be exact. I've been living here for almost nine years, though, so I suppose you could say I'm something of an honorary Kiwi.
-
Awesome photos! I especially like the one with Flitterheart and the bubbles :)

Welcome to the Arena! :) I love all the hairstyles you have given your ponies, they are all so cute (especially Plumsweet, I love her updo!) You have some amazing photos, I really enjoyed looking at them. 3 in particular really impressed me:

Excellent! Thanks for looking. Plumsweet is my favorite. She's my little 50s style soda fountain pony.

Beautiful photography. I like the NZ images and the ones with bubbles are ultra cool. :)

Very nice!! How can someone think this is not art?
I know! Seriously! But when I asked Equestria Daily why they wouldn't post any of my photos, they said they "don't post pics of toys unless they are new." And yet they have a section for pony art, so clearly they don't consider photography art.

Gorgeous pics! And I love some of the styling as well...Flitterhearts curls and Cherilees braids are fantastic!

Gorgeous pics! And I love some of the styling as well...Flitterhearts curls and Cherilees braids are fantastic!
Thanks. Cheerilee was one of my first (she's from the schoolhouse playset), and I'm pretty happy with her hairstyle. With Flitterheart, I was experimenting with frizzy hair so I could style my daughter's Pinkie Pie. I quite liked it on Flitterheart, so I decided to keep it, although I recently noticed that the curls in the front are starting to come out a bit. One of these days I'll get around to fixing it up again.
With the others: I tried to make Lily's hair look like the picture on the box and I'm pretty happy with that result. Blossomforth's hippie hair looked pretty good until my daughters took away that headband. My Rarity is the one with tinsel, so there's not a lot I can do with it. I tried styling it in the classic Rarity style, but it didn't work. I ended up doing it up in lots of little braids, which I eventually let out, so now she's got big wavy hair. Sweetie Swirl's is pretty good. Fluttershy was my first attempt at cutting pony hair and I butchered it rather badly. Dewdrop's is OK, although I've been considering redoing hers. I never bothered styling Luna's, as I quite liked her box hair. Plumsweet's is my favorite hairstyle, although it went through several incarnations before I got it to the point where I was happy with it. Lastly, Honeybuzz ... her hair was pretty wavy but it's mostly gone flat from the humidity and such. I need to redo her hair, but I'm not really sure what I want to do with it yet.

Oh hey there antlercat! I follow you on Flickr as well!
I do enjoy your photography a lot - that one of Dewdrop Dazzle in the rain is one of my all-time favourite pony photos :)
Awesome! I might have to revisit that one. I kinda wish I'd turned her head a bit to the side so it looked more like she was looking at her duck, since he's clearly looking up at her. I've also been thinking about doing something different with her mane, maybe put it up in plaits or something.
Being a guy, I'm not all that good at hairstyling, especially with something so tiny, and my daughters haven't been all that keen on letting me practice on them! LOL. Despite my man hands, I did manage to figure out how to do nice little plaits, but some of the trickier hairstyles continue to elude me.
I haven't actually played with my pony's hair in a long time precisely because it takes me ages to do their hair up, what with washing, boiling, rolling up, waiting for it to try, having to start over after messing up for the umpteenth time, and whatever else.

You are a cool dad, playing with ponies! XD Love it.

Now I just need to convince you to start buying vintage ponies!
LOL. Good luck with that. None of the previous generations of MLP appeal to me. I am biased towards the G4 body shapes. The older ones look ugly and/or misshapen to me. Sorry.
I'll admit that the one you've got as your avatar isn't too bad, though. What generation is that pony?
-
That's a G1 in his avi. But it's the "Big Brother" body style, they only made a handful of male ponies. You're not required to love all the gens, they may grow on you eventually though. We all tend to prefer the generation that we are most used to (which is why I like G1 best still).

I agree. not having played with MLP when I was a boy, I completely missed all the previous generations. My daughters started getting into it right at the end of G3. We only discovered FiM because they kept wanting me to find them MLP videos to watch on YouTube and I recall seeing some comments on one G3 video that was talking about how Lauren Faust had saved MLP, so I went searching for what they were talking about and found FiM.

The one with Flitterheart was a fluke. I was experimenting with my brand new wireless remote and took a whole series of photos and just happened to get one with a bubble right in front of her face. I had no idea, as I was not standing behind the camera, I was standing off to the side blowing the bubbles. The image is actually a composite, as I added a few of the bubbles from some of the other shots to fill in some of the gaps.
As for the Spike shot, that involved a lot of luck, patience and perseverance, as the bubbles kept popping on the blades of grass. I had really wanted one just on his head to make it look like a space helmet, but his spiky head kept making the bubbles pop, so I settled for a giant "magic air pocket" bubble instead, then recolored the grass in photoshop to make it look more alien.
-
Wow, these are wonderful!
I am especially impressed by your hair styling skills!

Shh, this is conversion at work!

I hate to break it to you, Tuney, but you're really not selling me on the older ponies.
Besides, I've pretty much stopped buying MLP. It's probably been months since I bought one. Sometime last year, in fact. And I don't intend to buy any more until this fall, when the TRU exclusive "fan favorites" collector's set comes out. Gotta get me a Lemon Hearts! She's my favorite background pony. Plus, I want the glow-in-the-dark Zecora.
Also, I've just spent far too much on MH dolls. I'm gonna have them coming out my ears soon!
-

Too bad, too bad. We can never have too many cool pony photographers and it would be a treat to see some G1s get some of your fabulous artist's touch. But maybe one day! ;)

Thank you for the kind words. I'm sorry to disappoint.
That being said, I've just discovered that Lyra and Trixie are being sold separately and not just in the TRU exclusive collector's set that's coming out this fall. I think I might get Lyra if only to have a green pony (especially considering how the G4 Minty doesn't appear to be in the works). I am also loving the new Sunny Rays pony. I'll have to get her when she appears here in NZ, even though I don't really need another pegasus (although I could always get rid of my Fluttershy to make room for her).
-
Nothing like some awesome photographs to get me all a-twitter. :lovey: I just admire those who know how to work their cameras.

Whoa those are some lovely photos! You sure know your way with a camera, they're very pleasant to look at. I'll probably stick in your gallery for an hour or so, haha. Nice job!
I wish I could be good at photography, it'd be so cool to take pony pictures. Alas, the only person in my family that's good with a camera is my cousin. I'm not sure if we're allowed to post pictures ourselves too, but this is a picture I made that I really like!

Thank you for your kindness (almost typed kidneys wat)! I really like that picture, it really looks like it's night. What animal is that on the basket? It looks like a mix between the chicken and the ducklings, haha.

I really like that picture, it really looks like it's night.
That's because it really was night! It was taken in the dark with a long exposure. The only light sources were the balloon itself and the flashlight I used to write Luna's name.

It's some kind of little birdie. I believe it came with the G3 MLP Christmas advent calendar my oldest daughter was given for her birthday a few years ago.

I saw that one! It sounds really hard to achieve the right look, it probably is? It must've been a pain to do with quite a long name like Pinkie Pie. I like this photo as well, it's such a lovely picture! The light makes Pinkie's legs look long and slender. You did a nice job on her mane too.

I. HAVE. FAILED!
Indeed. Sorry.
I saw that one! It sounds really hard to achieve the right look, it probably is? It must've been a pain to do with quite a long name like Pinkie Pie.
I think I must have taken at least 15 shots, if not 20, and that was the best of the bunch ... and it still wasn't quite what I wanted as it's still a little hard to read.
The light makes Pinkie's legs look long and slender.
It does, doesn't it? I hadn't really noticed before.
You did a nice job on her mane too.
Thanks. Took me hours to get it like that and all of 5 minutes for my three-year-old, whose Pinkie Pie it is, to undo it ... :(

Aww I'm sorry! I know what that's like, I once styled all of my ponies and then my three year old sister decided that she wanted to play with them while I was away. You should've seen the look on my face when I came home. :yikes:

Would you mind if I copied your styling for her mane? It's just so cute.

You do take great pictures of your ponies! I am a huge fan of photography myself so it is always fun seeing others who share that hobby! I haven't seen that many pictures of MLP on flickr (I am not good with the search button though). I hope you don't mind me adding you on flickr so I can keep a look out for your pictures ;)
