I've been thinking about this for a while now. Around Christmas I got interested in ponies again and I dug out my childhood ones, plus I started looking for info on the internet: Ponyland Press, My Little Wiki, the Arena, MLP trading post, The My Little Pony Scrapbook etc. However there's one thing I haven't really found any info on. In my childhood herd I have Sprinkles. I got her in a toy store, in Sweden, on a card with Duck Soup, a towel and two rollers. I haven't seen any information about this release, nor seen a picture of her MOC, which I would love to. I wonder if I have all her accessories. Is she supposed to have a brush, a sticker or a ribbon? I have read about Sprinkles with the Waterfall and the MO Sprinkles but this one on the card is a bit of a mystery(?). Anyone that knows anything? And I absolutely hate myself for throwing out my saved MLP boxes/cards in my early 20's, dumb, dumb, dumb.
-
Wow, I've never heard of her being packaged like that! Looking forwards to hearing more info!
-
Interesting! I've never heard of a carded Sprinkles before! Can't wait to hear if anyone else knows about this.
-
Yes - I have seen her this way before.
Towards the end of the US line we got quite a few ponies this way in Europe - from the playset ponies like Sprinkles and Tiddleywinks to some Mail Orders like Tux n Tails and even some of the original 6 mail order versions and birthflower ponies. Some of them came on cards [similar to regular ponies] and some of them came in little see through plastic bags with card secured at the top of the plastic.
They were all Hasbro products and it was simply a way to clear old stock and old ponies. Do you know how nowadays some stores carry end of line products at discounted prices? TK Maxx is kind of a good example of this in the UK and Ireland. In the 80s/early 90s there wasnt really a retailer doing this on a grand national/worldwide scale whose premise was to sell "current" but "end of the line" product therefore such items were often repacked and sold into countries where the same products had not previously or had not recently/widely been available.
-
I agree, I have seen her on card, too, coming with her duck Soup :)
Thats her picture, I saved from Ebay a few years ago!

Ah, thank you hathorcat and Sugarminty. That card is actually how I remembered it, much simpler than a regular MLP card/box. Oh crap, I see a ribbon. :( That means I'm missing another one. I have pretty much everything left for my childhood ponies but I'm low on ribbons for some reason. By the way, funny how the card says "Water Fall", why not just "Sprinkles"? Also, interesting you would mention Tux 'n Tales being sold like this because I think I remember seeing him in the toy store as a kid (and I thought it was a weird looking pony, the first male pony I had seen) and I got surprised when I recently learned that he was a mail order pony and is a bit rare. That explains it.

Yes - the card is even a half hearted attempt...there is nothing on the back of it either just plain brown cardboard...
-
Wow that is awesome to see that pic Sugarminty, thanks for sharing!!
I never even heard of this, very cool to know :) Hasbro did some funny things back in the 80s!
-
For the longest time I thought I had made up memories, when I recalled the moment my sister got this pony and the duck. I must have been four years old or younger, so my memories of it are a bit unclear but I could have sworn the toy was on a card. It's nice to know I didn't imagine the whole thing.

WEIRD! lol Just when you think you know all thre is to know about the ponies... XD

I had no idea you could buy them like that too!
I love it when I find out new mystery facts about G1s.
hathorcat you are like a walking pony encyclopaedia !
-
for years I've thought it was a dream; but now I am sure about that I did saw a Tiddlywinks on card at my cousins birthdayparty! O__O
This...this changes like everything!
-
She is lovely on a card like that : )

I do that too, sometimes I wonder if my memories are made up or not.

Ha ha, I feel so old for remembering her being on a card. This might not have anything to with this topic but I also have Baby Glory in my childhood herd but no accessories for her. I asked my childhood friend if it was hers but she can't remember and I honestly don't think we would have mixed up our pony stuff, especially not the actual ponies. I know Baby Glory didn't belong to a playset but was she released in a "stripped version"? I have the one with glitter symbols. I do remember playing with a MLP stacking toy as a child but I don't know if it was mine.

Yes all the original babies got a release on card with no accessories other than a bottle each - they came this way both with glitter symbols and matt symbols - the card was portrait orientation, similar in style to the waterfall one here, mainly blue in colour decorated on the front just with the baby ponies and with a blank reverse side. They were again a Euro release - mainly central Europe.
-
Wow, Sprinkles is one of my favorites- I never knew she was packages like that. I need her, but could never imagine what kind of price that package might fetch...

This might get lost in this thread since the title doesn't include Baby Glory but if anyone has a photo of a Baby Glory MOC or another baby pony released like this I'd love to see it, or a photo of just the card. I think we mainly got the US or UK releases here. The play and care sets had the snugfit diaper box for instance. Or if you, hathorcat, know when these baby ponies on cards were released I'd like to know - think I stopped getting ponies around 1988.

This is what I love about the G1s.

I had four of these babies, all of them were bought on those cards. I have most of the ponies and acc still but not the packaging unfortunately. I think I bought them in either 1986 or 1987, here in Sweden.
I have some ebay pictures saved on my computer, if no one has a better picture I'll go ahead and post one of those.
Baby Glory came with a baby bottle only, white with blue paint around the top.
edit to add - I think Centifolia has both the babies and Sprinkles moc. I don't remember her arena name at the moment... She used to have a photobucket album with all her mocs, including mountain boys as well, but I don't think it's up any more.

These are baby moondancer and baby blossom though.

I have pictures of Moondancer and Glory that I owed but not on this computer so I am not much help today!
-
It doesn't look familiar but thanks for posting. I wonder if that's how I got my Baby Glory. Hathorcat, feel free to post that Baby Glory photo whenever you have the chance.
-
Wow, I had no idea she was ever packaged on a card. Learn something new everyday!
-
Wow such an interesting bit of new information. I am thinking I wish they still sold ponies on back cards like this. Now it takes like an hour to open children's toys due to all the ties, sewn down pieces, tape, and plastic in plastic. Boy that old packaging sure would have made it a lot easier to get your pony out and enjoy it. I guess we can thank retail theft for this fact. Do you remember if you got a sticker with these? Or were they without stickers? I don't really know a whole lot about the stickers, I am just starting to wish I had more than I do.
-
I'd vote no on the stickers. I can't see any in the packages here and I don't have any of Sprinkles or Baby Glory, I've got most of my childhood stickers left.
Edit: I have all of my stickers left.
-
No - none of them came with stickers - the babies only had a bottle each that was all...
-
My sister got her Baby Blossom on a card in Germany when we were kids. My Princess Tiffany also came on a card without the bushwollie she was released with in the US.
-
No - none of them came with stickers - the babies only had a bottle each that was all...
Strange, these must be the only ones out of the lot that didn't come with a comb or brush!

The whole release is a little half hearted - no backcard art, hardly any accessories - it does feel like "we have hundreds of these little baby ponies...what the heck shall we do with them" kind of moment.
-
When I saw them in stores I did think the release seemed a bit rushed. Like they wanted to get the babies out on the market as soon as possible, so they put together a quick card and slapped the babies onto it..
-
These releases are so odd - I've never seen them here (though granted I was born a little too late for them I think). They do seem like a rushed release to make some quick cash from existing ponies without having to go through the trouble of making accesoiries and such.
-
I have three of the baby ponies on card...

That's an old pic, but you get the idea :) for the glitter symbols, there are actually two versions of the card - Benelux and German. My own childhood ones came on the Benelux cards when we were on holiday. These ones have nothing on the back.
There is actually a third card actually, for the matte symbolled ones released in Germany the year after. This does have stuff on the back (this is a picture of just the backcard, no pony on the front!)

Someone mentioned Baby Tiddleywinks - there was definitely a Spanish version of her that was sold on card.
I think the babies may have got a wider release than ponies on card like Sprinkles. I'd be interested to know what other ones were sold like that actually!
-
I have seen a Tiddlywinks on a card in the same manner as Sprinkles - not the Spanish carded version [i.e. the same one that a Baby LD and Baby BT appear on] it was in English...the others I have seen in the plastic bags - Butterscotch, Blossom, Minty, CC and 4 of the Birthflower ponies as well as Tux
-
I wondered if anyone had any more of these pics...or information of how many ponies were sold like this in Uerope. Also--were they ever sold like this in the US?

No they were all a Euro thing - the line in the US was finished by the time a lot of the "bagged" ponies turned up - we got a lot of imaginative creations over here - the Princess and Happy Tails variants which were very random and even boxed very randomly. The whole thing was end of line, excess stock clearance style - too many ponies and the closing out of a line.
-
I have a pair of babies on the same card - baby surprise and cotton candy, and they come with a sticker that says baby ponies on it hehe, it was produced in south Africa because it's made by prima toys. X
-
