I don't know much about this, so I would like more info !
When I first got Cotton Candy, she smelled really nicely ! I thought someone had put some perfume on her, but recently when I got Blue Ember, she smelled the same ! I know some ponies have this scent, but not all of them. Which G1s have this scent, then?
I tried looking around for info, but no luck... Thanks in advance ! :)

I wonder if it is the type of plastic? Vinyl smells kind of sweet to me, and all my G1s smell like this.

It's the PONY SMELL. I love the PONY SMELL. I'd say about half my herd still has it.

I remember a thread about this on the Trading Post. Yeah, apparently that's just how G1s smell. I love it so much! I'm surprised at how many of my ponies have it; I think some of my later gen ponies might be getting it from hanging out with my G1s, too, LOL!

Many of the G1s were scented. I thought it was all of them, but I've recently been told it's only a portion of them.

I totally agree! There is just something about the smell of a ( clean, and not moldy or smoke smelling ) pony collection. I think it DOES have something to do with the vinyl bodies.
The normal sized G4's don't really have that smell, since their bodies are made of a harder plastic, but the G4 Stylin' ponies do, since their bodies are vinyl. To test this, I even gave a few of my other non-Hasbro vinyl toys a sniff, and they have that slightly sweet scent as well.
So I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's the chemicals in vinyl that make vinyl toys smell sorta sweet.
But because we're a pony community, let's just call it, "the pony smell" ( I am so stealing that phrase, Jadis! XP ).

I recieved my first ever G1 recently and realised how wonderfully she smells.. I've never really experienced the pony smell before as I didn't have ponies when I was small.. Such a delight.

I was looking for my childhood pony after dragging up the bag with the ponies, I had no idea how she looked like - I only remembered her smell. So after cleaning a bunch, I came a cross a very dirty pony. She required precise cleaning so I was up close for details. Then I picked up a faint smell and I remembered; Sherbert were my childhood pony! :D
She smelled a bit floral/candy, not very much but in a nice way.

Yep! It's the vinyl. C: I love that smell too. Of course I also like the smell of the old high bounce balls, gasoline, and tar...

The smell is from the plastic, and it's downright intoxicating. Takes me back to my 6-year-old self's playroom. :)

There is no smell as lovely as walking into the pony room after it has been shut up for a few days. That lovely pony smell.

my g1s stink of old plastic.. unfortauntly....
blue ember does have a tinge of sweet but I cant smell it well because I have a blocked nose..
lady flutter is sweetish aswell but only a little bit

Little ponies are at the end of the day made from the same materials as manufacturers use from everything from the dashboard of your car to a bath mat....and you have to differentiate between purposefully "scented" ponies [i.e. Sweetberry, Perfume Puff, etc] and the remainder of the sets which haven't been scented but which have been manufactured with fragranced plastic. Many toys from the late 70s to now have some kind of poly-scent added not to make the toys smell nice, i.e. not so much to "add" a smell but to counteract the smell of yucky plastic. Its the same reason car manufacturers add "new car smell".
And that slightly sweet smell does make those ponies even more appealing!

Who knows, maybe it's some type of scented narcotic that Hasrro put in their product to addict us to them and that's why we're all still collecting after almost 30 years... :rofl: mwah ha ha ha ha!!

I think may have to do with the different batches of vinyl made for various batches of pony. Each batch is always a taaaad different, which is why we sometimes have ponies with plasticine problems.

As others have said only a few sets have a "purposeful" scent, other ponies will just have poly scent in the plastic in order to stop them smelling of plastic not to give them an actual smell. I assume from the ponies you are mentioning that its this latter scent you are referring to.
These ponies are 30 years old - some will have been carefully stored and may retain their smell, some may have had all manner of adventures, got dirty, been washed and may have lost some of their scent, some may have have lived in a house where someone overused air fresheners or lived in a box with some scented toys and picked up their scents. How a pony has lived its life is going to be determined by if it still retains a new pony scent. Again I ll go back to the car reference - if a car has been immaculately maintained and always cleaned and hardly used then it may retain some of its new car smell - if its been worked hard, cleaned only occasionally and transported everything from muddy kids to wet dogs it isnt going to retain that nice new car smell!
The poly scent is in the plastic - however hair will of course pick this scent up - as the hair will have been stored in the bubble along with the scented pony body when new - kind of like how your hair may smell of cigarettes after you come out of a smoky room. In addition the scent from the plastic inside will come out the only "holes" in the pony - tail hole and mane plugs to the scent will probably work into the hair there as well. And by "scent" I just mean the new pony smell we are all talking about lol!

Hmm I see ! I just find it funny, really, that some ponies retained the smell after so long and some don't smell of anything at all now ! :D I love the scent they have~
I got Blue Ember in really dirty state, smoke smell, she was all black inside and all that... I cleaned her up good - I could still fix a few things, but those will have to wait - and after a while she doesn't smell of smoke anymore and she has that sweet scent in her hair... *_*

I know exactly what you are talking about, and I found an apple scented handsoap that had the same sweet smell. Wish I could remember what brand it was. But it was pony scented XD

I usually love the smell of my pony room, it is wonderful. But after I got pregnant I can hardly go into my pony room, the smell is so overpowering and makes me feel sick. I am just thankful this is temporary because I still love my ponies, I just can't be around them at the moment.. I can normally stand around for ages and smell my ponies though, my favourite smelling ponies are Mimic, Tiddleywinks and Little Flitter.

I inhale the smell of my Moonstone when I need a pick-me-up. Brings back a lot of happy memories! :D

I had a coco berry that smelled uber strong and when I would get panic attacks I would sniff her LOL but then my panic attack would go away, was the weirdest thing, but it worked like a charm lol

I think... that's all of them? All the rest would be possibly the vanilla additives they put in the plastic, I think. I vaguely remember Baby Tiddley-Winks having a baby powder smell, but that might have been the nursery itself (or just generic pony scent.)

Someone on the Trading Post said that there's a Victoria's Secret perfume (some sort of "winter pear" or something?) that smells just the same way! *grabby hands*

I think I found it if anyone is interested, the etsy user is: BlackBaccara
and the scent is 'New Doll' I think. - I got it originally in a sampler a year or so ago.
The holiday candy is also one of my favourites that I wear every day :D

Nothing like a familiar smell to fill your head with magic and memories.
The Pony vinyl is at the top of my list as well as old book smell, and wild rose bush smell.
