Title: Masquerade Pony Swap, Ponies arriving!

Welcome to the Masquerade swap.
To Participate in a Masquerade you must disguise yourself. Its a party where guests wear masks and costumes!
Lets be creative and have loads of fun!

Dates:
Sign ups: May 14 - June 7th
Partners assigned before or on: June 9th
First check in: July 9th
Progress pictures required: August 9th
Final check in: September 1st
Shipping: September 15th

Please remember to always check your organizer's feedback before joining a swap.

Rules:
1. You must have atleast 3 positive Arena feedback and no negative Arena feedback.
2. You must have been an Arena member for at least 3 months before sign ups are over.
3. You must have pictures of at least 3 of your most recent customs to show the quality of your work. This is a skill based swap and I need to know where to put you.
4. Ship on time! I realize real life issues come up sometimes. If this happens, I want to know about it as soon as you realize you will be late.
5. No shipping early! I will be withholding addresses until shipping time to prevent this. The exception will be after final check in and your partner is ready to ship as well. I don't want anyone disappointed in this swap and with so many people going MIA lately, it's best for everyone to hold off until we are sure their partners haven't disappeared.
6. Be prepared with progress pics at progress date.
7. Send me pictures of your completed custom before you ship. I want to know your custom is complete before it goes out.
8. Let me know right away when you ship your pony and when you receive one.
9. Do not let anyone know who your partner is. It is secret.
10. Extras are not required, but are welcome. However, do not go overboard with these. This is about the customs. A small treat/gift or 2 is fine and good but not too much. After all, you worked hard on the custom, it should be the most exciting part!
11. This swap includes all generations of ponies (G1, G2, G3, G3.5, and G4), if there are any of these you do not like, include that in your form. Do not use any fakies unless your partner requests it.
12. You must be in no more than 2 other swaps (total of 3).
13. The title of your PM should be " going to the Masquerade ball", so I know you read the rules. If the title of your pm is not right, you will not be added to the sign up list.
14. PM the sign up form to me Saja by the sign up deadline. I will do my very best to get partners out on or before June the 9th.
15. You must check in with pictures for the final check in. If you do not check in, you will not be receiving a Pony.
16. KEEP YOUR SHIPPING RECEIPTS! You need to be able to produce proof of shipping when asked. You need to hold onto your receipt until your partner confirms that they have received their pony. I also highly recommend delivery confirmation for those not shipping internationally.
17. IF AT ANYTIME YOU DO NOT ABIDE BY ANY OF THESE RULES, YOU WILL BE PULLED FROM THE SWAP. This includes, but is not limited to, missing check ins and sharing partners. Make sure you are familiar with the rules before you sign up. You are expected to follow them.

Yes, she sent out a poll for which swap she was going to do. I think I voted for masquerade even :D

So.. Yeah. Grr and stuff because Im now getting ideas for how I could make my masquerade pony, so I probably will enter..

I love the masks in the masquerade theme.. but for me.. the dress is just as important! I have long been a fan of medieval times and renaissance times. Growing up in Southern California, I had the chance to go to a few renaissance faires and I loved it!

So while the masks alone can be beautiful..

Im thinking.. If I could pull it off.. I am sorta wanting to make a matching mask for my partner. And I would like to use a fabric base. So I'm just not sure if I ought to glue the fabric to something, or use starch or what.

Depending on what my partner wants I'll sculpt the mask permanently on or make it removable. A good way is to cover the head in plastic wrap, then sculpt the mask on. That way you'll have a great fit and make it removable!

Same here! Every design I come up with would be way to bulky if sculpted. Don't know what to do? Change the design for the third time, use fabric, or sculpt accessories and paint a design but no dress?

Boil the head then step on it on carpet. It deforms the head for a bit, but it goes back to proper shape, she says.

He has fun stabbing the head repeatedly and showing off his strength. :P we all know guys will be guys, might as well let them show off. ;)

Just curious... do you guys have a pony design in mind when you are filling out your forms? Because I feel like when I read the form, I was trying to guess the exact image that was in my partner's head at the time. I certainly had an idea in mind when I was filling out the form!

Im not trying to say that others do, but to explain that it affects my thought process. I deliberately leave it vague to allow my partner room to be creative. Both this swap and the Fashion stylke swap, I think I included dragons. I love them. Does that mean I need specifically an overly dragon look to the pony if someone chooses that theme? Nah.

I just love seeing what people come up with. I love seeing their creativity and interpretations of my "likes".

My cat found it.l I was wondering what the heck she was doing when she started pawing at it! I have never known her to obsess with feathers, but this was like crack to her! She WANTED that feather. It was so cute to watch her swipe and snap at it as I twirled it around for her.

I can sacrifice one feather if it makes her happy. ^_^ I love my kitty.

Oh and I'm using feathers for the mask too! I was just thinking what the best way to do it would be too, and I heard that glue and feathers don't get along, and I'm baking so I can't make the feathers a part of the sculpted piece (in fear that the feathers will burst into flame in the oven... :blink: ).
Drilling a hole sounds interesting, but...that's a really small drill bit that I'll need! And I'd be afraid that the drill was a little to rough on a thin, delicate piece... hmmm... Or did you mean drill the holes before baking? like... stab the feathers in, then take them out to bake and their holes should still be there?

I'm not making a dress dress, but if it were me, I might lay tissue paper or white muslin fabric over the pony to draw, then cut out the shapes I would need for the dress. Then I'd roll out some clay with a small, wooden rolling pin, lay the shapes on top and trace around those with an xacto knife. Then lay down the pieces onto the pony. I might glue a layer of mesh on the pony first, trailing behind her to support the weight if it was a longer dress.

Im using an image of a dress to base this off of, and just sort of winging it. I think the idea of mesh for support in a long trailing dress is great and it's not too late for me to go for that.

I don't think a dress is necessary unless your partner specifies (or heavily hints) that they would like a dress. Some of my design ideas do, some don't. I think it's more important to get the feel of the theme and the mask itself. An elaborate dress and mask might be too much for one pony.

This made me laugh so hard!! I am not making a dress, and I wouldn't be mad at all if I didn't get a dress. The things my partner listed made me think they will love this design, so it's cool. Painted ponies are as lovely as dressed up ones. Mine does have a costume though.

I was wondering, as I made it, that it has A LOT of super delicate parts. I'm super worried about shipping it and it getting hurt, so how do you all ship delicate sculpting that has a lot of angles and areas that should be supported and such?

I don't know if this is actually better or good or whatever.. But I feel like it is. None of my Dresden Files ponies have broken during shipping, and they all have long trailing coats made from very thin clay. After making it into a wad of shopping bags, then I use bubble wrap for a few layers.. Then I put it into the center of a box stuffed with whatever I have.. Packing peanuts, paper, more bubble wrap, grocery bags..

I have seen a tutorial once that someone did where they pad well with shopping bags in a very sturdy box, about half full, then nestle the pony in and then tape all of that down well so it creates sort of a suspension structure. It ensures the pony doesn't move. She did it to keep it cradled in the center and to protect hairstyles.

Same here. I have a detailled sketch and good idea in my head, then I start to sculpt and now it's totally different from what I intended. I'm still happy with her, but she's someone else now... 0o Sometimes ponies have their own ideas.
Hope to get the sculpting done in a few more sessions. :)

omg same here! I have a great, detailed drawing of what I want, a central theme, smaller motifs, and yet...
they all seem to clash in the slightest way! D: I'm so afraid that this pony is going to be an exact replication of my typical clashing everyday outfit with all of the design changes, additions, and such! ^.^;

Thank you so much for your lovely offer! To be honest, I cannot think of anything, but the show of kindness is very much appreciated :D

Right now, the hardest thing is watering the horses, I am having to drive and fill an 100gal tank, then drive back, and bucket it into the buckets in the field from the truck..

Really long process, but far better then having dead horses!

Know what you mean! I finished sculpting, painting, rehairing, styling...just need to add one more little thing. But she is So pretty and I'm very proud of her. My partner had some great inspiration in their form!!

So stressed out of late I cannot even sleep..

But anyway back on target hopefully, should have my head totally haired this week, and should have the body done fingers crossed!

So. I got the job at Panera Bread :D This means I'm getting a bit of a raise, as they will be paying me more than my current job. The pay tops out higher than my deli manager gets, so thats great.

This means my life is currently a bit more stable so I am back to work on my pony. I'm afraid I may miss the september 1st deadline, but I don't think I will be terribly far past it. I just cant force myself to rush this pony. I would hate to rush and do a sloppy job.

*cries* I just heard the cats obsessed with something near my pony station.. I finally get up to go look... They had the mask I made for my pony!!!! They chewed up the feathers! *cries harder* The feathers were sculpted intot he apoxie clay of the mask. I doubt I can just remove them and replace them. Now I have to make a whole new mask!

I got the gems and the mermaid bubbles in today that I had ordered too. So I just need a day to sit down and focus on painting her and then I think I will be over the hump, so to speak. Looks like I am off work on Thursday morning.. so hopefully I can get this done. I have no idea when my next day off after that is.

With this custom, I probably won't have much in the way of extras in the box just because she is so heavily sculpted and fragile. I don't want things banging against her. I do hope that she is stunning enough that you dont mind, partner.

I just had the same thing happen to me :( I am so mad! I had Black Magick ordered, and she just put Saran Raven Black in instead. I dont even USE saran. I hate the stuff. This is useless to me. She has our email address when we order. If she's out of something after we order it, then she could at least drop an email asking what we would prefer as a replacement, or if we want our money back.

Im currently waiting for her to respond to my very very unhappy email.

It ran out because she's not up to date on her orders, so she doesn't mark items sold out until a lot of people already have ordered them. I will not be paying to ship back the saran. It was her responsibility to send me the correct thing. If she didn't take the time to check with me if that was ok, even though she has my phone number, she can pay for shipping if she wants it back. Here's an excerpt from the email which I find very amusing since a phone number is one of the required fields when checking out. Also, I'm not the one not checking my email in a timely manner. That's her problem.

"Whenever we run out of a color, our policy is that we'll just send the closest-matching color. That's because often, customers are in ahurry to receive their orders, and when it becomes a matter of emailing the customer and notifying them, then the customer may not see my email on a timely basis, and then it's a matter of reading my email replies on a timely basis, as well."

My original Dollyhair order never went through, turns out my CC company does not like the shopping cart company Dolly hair uses. Of course seeing what poor Maniah and hannaliten went through, that may be a blessing in disguise. I ended up using RetroDolls UK to find the closest to what I need.

I hope it reaches me soon or I might be sending late. :(

I think I may need to seal this one with mod podge to preserve the sparkle in my paint. I did a test with dullcote, and it killed the sparkle too much for my liking.

OMG this lol I love seeing the kinds of boxes that I get pony stuff in. I got a lot of baits from someone in a box for 20lbs of canadian rice before. so excited to see what's next, if it's not just a regular ole flat rate box.

Had to grab a bag of pre blended from another order, that contained one of the colors and another similar to the other color.. Then ran out of that.. I am so improvising on blending colors to best match what I need. I want this done! Though, if I do say so myself, Ive done a damn good job!

Now I just need to add glue and style it. She's got a massive amount of hair that needs curled. I hope it isn't heavy enough to tip her.

The package was still at that Post Office... srsly!! I was hopping mad and lost my temper just a wee bit at the clerk. I demanded my $$ back took her back...

I'm so sorry partner... I feel so awful I want to cry and punch pillows at the same time. Needless to say I'm repackaging her and sending her back out from another office as soon as I can.

(to top it off I dropped and broke the other package by accident right before I found out the bad news.)

D: that's horrible! wtf is with these post offices... I swear, they don't care at all about people's lives and responsibilities surrounding these packages, I've also had several issues like this with the post office in the past.

For being so very patient. I know how frustrating it is working hard on pony and then have to wait so long to get one back. I'm also sorry that I haven't been able to post lately. My net went out sometime over Thanksgiving weekend and I just got it back earlier today. Anyway... I sent 2.0 out already and I hoped she had reached you by now. I'm a lil scared cause its holiday time and you know how that goes.
