Let's see pictures of the free "mildew ponies"!
I'll start with the ones I took, which were ones I picked out at the start of the meet, plus I took the leftovers no one wanted at the end of the meet:

First, a quick rinse with hot water, then a bath with washing soda, borax, and peroxide and some quick scrubbing:

Still kind of gross, so after a second bath with the same stuff and more scrubbing:

Their tails are still drying after having major rust removed, so they're not in the picture.
Most still need sunfading, but they're so much better! I actually don't have a few of these, and I think Lickety Split is even going to be an upgrade for me, since my current one has white hair!
How have the others cleaned up?
-
Great job, Elisto!
-
That's amazing. Great job!
-
Great job!!
-
Those are so amazing results!
-
my 3 have been washed and scrubbed, but nothing else yet since they're twinkle eyes - and the eyes are still perfect. I got some good tips for cleaning them safely, I just haven't gotten that far yet.
-
Yeah, I saw the finish on the Twinkle Eyes still looked really nice!
Normally, I don't wash ponies like I did here. I usually clean each pony individually with a toothbrush and soap or toothpaste, and don't soak them, especially if they're TE or have glitter or anything else that can be damaged. Easier to make sure they stay intact I think, but here, they were so dirty and there were so many, this just made more sense, even though I really do enjoy cleaning ponies.
-
It always amazes me when people restore ponies, especially the ones that most people wouldn't even bother with.
They all look fabulous. Congrats on the bunch!
I wish I was better at restoring ponies.
-
Wow, what a difference! Congrats!
-
Those are looking great! I'll make sure Donna (that's the lady who gave them to me to pass on) gets to see the before and afters. She'll be so happy! :)
-
here are mine so far

They are looking great! They sure were gross before :/
-
oh gosh! such a dramatic change! it's amazing what a little scrubbing can do! lol i took home a few ponies from my old manager, cleaned them up and brought them back for her to see, and she swore up and down they weren't the same ponies she gave me, til i turned em over for her to see her initials on their feet, still bled into the plastic and everything lol i gave em back to her since i had them all already and really just wanted to surprise her with nice once again minty ponies lol
i love seeing tales of resotres, so many people would have just pitched them all :(
that glory looks magnificent! mine is balding and has virtually no symbol left lol just super amazing job! and you know about using toothpaste to get the rust off the tails right? i'm sure you do, but it's magic if you didn't know! lol (and the ponies smell wonderful afterwards lol)
-
What a fantastic improvement! Wow...
-
Buddafly, those TE are looking nice!
Personally, I don't feel like I can call these "restores" since I feel like that makes it sound like I put way more effort into this than I actually did! I haven't gotten to any "fixing" yet! (Although some are in the window now waiting for sun)
-
I have some before pics of mine, but no afters yet. I'm still doing a little work on them, especially the babies. I'll share pics soon!
Elisto, your picks look great! I'm wishing I had snagged one of those sea ponies when I had the chance.
-
I took some pics of my girls after tooth pasting their tails... haven't uploaded them yet though, and they're now currently sitting with their hair curled and drying. hopefully some decent pics tomorrow of final outcomes!
-
they are most definately restores lol cause you have fixed the ickiness problem they had lol
might not have been rehairing, painting eyes/symbols, scultping a horn or whatever else, but they are still restored to their original selves and they are AMAZING! a lot of people wouldn't have given them a second thought until they maybe went to bait em and in prep saw how good they came out
-
Wow, Elisto, all those ponies look incredible! Good work! If only all ponies could be cleaned up so well.
-
I got a couple of them. They are soaking right now. I will try to upload pics soon.
Elisto: Yours look great! I hope mine come out half as nice!
-
Thanks! Although, really, some are more discolored than they look in the picture, which is why they're sunfading now. But surprisingly, the rust came out of their tails fairly well!
Though, truthfully, I'm a little put-off when people equate dirty with "baity" or in need of restoration... we all wash our clothes, or at least try to, not cut them up or get rid of them just because they're dirty, I hope!
-
They look great now!!!
-
I cleaned my mildew ponies today they look so much better now and all it took was a quick wash and a Magic eraser. Baby ember and Sunlight (?) look great Sundance still needs another wash but I got her for bait anyway
-
Wow! I thought ponies like that were unfixable!!
-
so my 3 girls are still stained, but they look a million times better! once I get some sunlight, I'll snap pics and post em!
-
Dirt/rust/grunge is probably one of the *most* fixable problems, congrats to everyone who rescued some of the poor things. I like your analogy Elisto; we most certainly do not throw out our clothing simply because it's dirty!
Especially when G1 ponies are far harder to replace than a shirt or pair of pants.
-
They look so happy now!
-
Borax, really? I am sooooo tempted to get some gloves and some Borax and try this out! :) I like organic cleaners so it would be nice to see how well it works on my ponies.
What FANTASTIC restorations! :D
-
Okay so, I took a LOT of photos. I'm going to throw the link to the Photobucket album link here to let everyone see all the results. I'll share a few highlights here though:

Poor Medley is still in bad shape. And Hearthrob's NDS is not great either. I don't know if sunfading would help anyone? Gusty has yellow on her back leg, and Glory has a huge brown blotch on her belly still. I know I can sunfade them, but can I sunfade the non-white ponies?
Also, any suggestions for how to style Hearthrob's hair? XD
The ponies cleaned up really well, to my surprise. And their hair is gorgeous, aside from Baby Blossom. Firefly had to have her tail washer replaced. All three babies had tail rust, so I had to rip their tails out, treat the rust, and then put them back in. Normally I don't care for the baby ponies, but these three sort of stole my heart. It was their little dirty faces that made me start digging in the bag and rescuing ponies in the first place.
-
Wow, even more amazing results! You guys are making me want to go find some filthy old ponies to clean up myself. :frolic:

Can I use this quote in my signature? It's so true!!
-
Uh, sure, lol! I hope I didn't offend anyone who was planning on baiting them though!
Also, that symbol-less baby is Ember. She's the only one like that. And yes, you can sunfade non-white ponies. It works really well on yellowing/discoloration (which all of mine do have). I have all my ponies in a window right now, except Bow Tie...I'm afraid she might be too dark to sunfade safely, but I'm going to try it to see what happens when I have space.
Edit: Oh, right, and the borax/washing soda/soap/peroxide I mentioned is actually my home-made laundry detergent!
-
I smartly went to Dream Valley to identify Ember, but it's nice to get confirmation! I was worried that maybe her symbol had rubbed off, but it didn't look like she had ever HAD a symbol, so I thought maybe she came that way. Turned out it was! Hooray! I'm going to have to try sunfading on some of these girls. Should have a few good windows to do it in too, if I look hard enough. Thanks!
-
SOO pretty!!! cant wait to see the finished ponies!!! :D gives me hope for some of the ones i have found recently! :D
-
Aw, you guys are doing such a great job! They look amazing all cleaned up. :)
BTW, if you don't mind me asking, where did the mildewed ponies come from? Did someone donate their collection to your meet? How did they get so grimy? I'm a little curious.
-
Aww, they look fantastic! It's so good to see grimy G1s cleaned up. :lovey: Even if they can't turn out perfect, they still deserve to be loved as they are! =D

I think an aquaintance of someone going to the pony meet had found these ponies, and either didn't know or didn't have the time to clean them, so they put them in a paper sack on the freebie table at the MD meet with a really lovely note and said that whomever wanted to put the effort into them could have them for free. It was really nice, I thought. And so much better than trashing them! It's so nice to see dirty ponies find loving homes.
-
Wow, they are all looking so much better! I love a good restoration :)
-
You guys have done a really good job. Those ponies are looking lovely.
-
Yes, the ponies came from FarDreamer's neighbor, who said they had a lot of sentimental value to her, so she wanted them to go to people who would appreciate them (as is or as customs).
-
You did wonderfully! They were in desperate need of a good cleaning!

It was a lady who goes to my church. She thinks my pony collection is really cool. I won't go into the whole story, but they were her sons. They're having some issues in their relationship and he threw the ponies away. She rescued them out of the trash. They have a lot of sentimental value to her because she's a nationally respected horse trainer and the ponies were a way of sharing her passion with her son when he was a kid. She said that they represented all their Christmas's and birthdays together. I think they stayed in a not-temperature controlled shed for several years, which would explain a lot of their condition.
I told her that if she cleaned them up she could get some money for them (not all of them were common, I kept any I didn't already have, sorry guys :) ). She said no, that she didn't need money for them, that she just hoped they would be a blessing to someone who didn't have them yet. She loves it that so many people are taking them as part of their collection. She just wanted them to be cleaned up and loved, even if it's for customs.
There was no way I was going to have time to clean them all up myself, so giving them away seemed like a good option.
It's funny how things like this can have so much meaning to people. Did you ever think that cleaning up a pony would make someone happy who you don't even know? :)
-
Thats lovely FarDreamer - that after the sad end they were destined for that she rescued them and helped them find new pony homes. I hope she resolves things with her son but in the meantime at least she knows the toys will be loved.
-
So pretty! I LOVE before and after pictures! It's pleasantly surprising what you can accomplish with some pony TLC! :D
