Title: About cutie marks...
Post by: Shenanigans on April 28, 2012, 07:00:50 PM
Did anyone ever notice that G1s have cutie marks on both sides but G3s and G4s only have them on one side? I only have one G2 and I believe she has one on both sides. I wonder why they only have them on one side now

uhhhh... yup XD

Hasbro just realized that putting the symbol one side only was cheaper and easier.

I agree, it is much cheaper to only put them on one side.

Cheaper and ENRAGING!

That and the cardboard cutout animal friends (and even ponies) they put in the G4 packages. They're going well out of their way to give you the impression you're getting a value, and not giving you one at all.

It's because Hasbro has become cheap and slapdash.

It looks unbalanced and awkward, IMO.

I miss the double symbols but it's also kind of nice only having them on their display side at least now you only have to worry about one mark getting messed up and not two.

I hate it -- the ponies HAVE to be displayed a certain way for their symbols to show, or they pull an Exorist move and break their necks to look the other way. It's limiting.

I miss having symbols on both sides, too.

Psst, Hasbro - I'd be more than willing to pay a little extra to get this back, btw - and for you to fix your quality control and distribution issues.  Just sayin'.  :)

@scarlet - Hasbro's toy division isn't doing half as well as the entertainment division. (Q1 toy sales were down significantly) I'm hoping reform is ahead, but it will take some serious work to restructure the current mess they've got on their hands. If they're willing to admit eventually that fans will gladly pay a little bit more for decent quality, we'll be all right.

yes, this exactly. Price isn't an issue for me, I want quality back!

Price may not be an issue for us, but these are not manufactured or marketed as collectors items. They are toys, and in a struggling economy where toys are luxury items, keeping costs down is extremely important for companies.

I could forgive this on the G3s, since they have other things going for them like magnets, foot symbols over those magnets, and eye symbols too, but what have G4s got?  Being smaller than ever?

*cough* G1's have symbols, not cutie marks, >_>;
Agree that putting the markings on only one side is lame lame lame.  Just another cost cutting measure.

G4s have 'still-being-five-dollars-in-2012'.

Hit the nail on the head....personally its the thing I dislike in the most recent gens...the laziness of only having a symbol on one side. But at the end of the day if it saves them money - they will do what cuts down on manufacturing costs - especially as most of their "buyers" are playing with their ponies and not displaying them as we will. Doesnt stop me wishing they would even up those pony flanks though!

Even when I was little, I would have been unhappy with the asymmetry of the cutie marks, so to me, it's not just a "collector's issue". I can't have been the only kid like this.

As for toy sales being down, I blame that more on re-releases of the same character than on quality. What collector OR child wants 10 of the same character? That's no fun to play with, and what parent is going to buy the same toy over and over again? Barbie seems to be the only toy that is successful with this strategy, and I can't figure out why.

Toy sales are also down because parents have barely enough money to feed their kids/buy clothes/etc...

G4s have 'still-being-five-dollars-in-2012'.

THIS. I think that keeping the singles right at or under $5 ($4.99) is a big deal and a really great idea. It's so dang affordable. If you're a parent shopping with your kids it's way more reasonable to let them pick out a toy if the cost is so minimal.

Hasbros "girl" toy sales are down overall, but MLP has the best performance in that segment, so clearly they're doing something right. And if it really bothered anyone that much, you just wouldn't buy them.

I don't, at least not new.

Also, while I recognize that printing the picture only on one side does save a lot of money, given the huge scale they're manufactured out, I don't think printing on both sides would bump the price over $5.

Pity they don't follow that strategy outside the USA! I don't think a lot of people here like the idea of paying 7-8 euro for a fairly small pony.

Yeah, I've thought about that myself!  I noticed with the G3s that the cutie mark isn't even on same side in all ponies so you have to have them facing different ways which is a little awkward.

Pretty sure we all noticed. =P I think it's pretty lame. I adore the fact that with G2, you can not only turn the heads any way you want (on most, at least) but they have symbols on both sides so you can display them facing either way. Hasbro had it all right back then...

LOL. No ponies have 'cutie marks' if you ask me. =P

I thought I was the only one who called them "symbols" so I wrote cutie marks instead, lol. I actually hate that they're called cutie marks XD

"Cutie mark" is a G3 or G4 term, I think it came about in G3?  It definitely was not around in the first two generations, and I refuse to call my ponies symbols "cutie" anything.  PTOOEY. Makes them sound all cutsey and gross.

I'll call G3 and G4 symbols cutie marks since it's cannon, but I do think it sounds like they're trying too hard to sound cute and girly. They already are cute! No need to go overboard with it, I think.

I'd love if they were double-sided but I 've heard part of the reason they stopped because it it was hard to get both sides aligned.

I would prefer if the G4 ponies had cutie marks on both sides just for display purposes. It annoys me when I have an uneven number of ponies with cutie marks on one side than on the other, it just makes the display off balance... if that makes any sense
I feel like Hasbro is definitely trying to make products quickly and less expensive. I wish they would put a little more effort in as far as the cutie marks go, but if I really had to pick something about the G4 ponies that I would want them to fix it would definitely be the plastic on the pink/purple ponies so their heads and bodies match  >_<

They managed pretty well for the first decade of production? o.O;

I don't think Hasbro wanted to cut corners so much as it is a result of the harsh reality of our economy. Plastic is made from oil and over the years the price of it has skyrocketed. I would not want to be the owner of any such company in this day and age. All the criticism that would be directed at me just to keep from losing money isn't worth it.

Ah, yes, I remember when I first heard that term back at the beginning of G3.  I had the same reaction.  I continue to call them "symbols" regardless of which generation it is.

True but I am sure the machines probably use it so the less machines they have use probably helps offset rising costs. It just irritates me that people tend to think companies cut corners just so some fat cat can have another Benz when that usually isn't the case.

I don't think the "Butt Symbol Crusaders" has quite the same ring to it. :silly:

I personally hate them only being on one side too, makes it harder to display them and if one gets scuffed or whatever then you dont have a 'back up'

Could be an interesting art project to learn how to paint the other one on yourself...

Are there any guides for doing that yet?

I've also wondered about this.  Because on the show you can clearly see that they have Cuitemarks on both flanks.

It would save Hasbro money if they could be better about making sure factory workers don't steal boxes of ponies. I'm seeing them sold on ebay by the dozens for a ridiculous amount.

I'm not bothered by symbols only being on one side, but I can see why others would be. (Probably helps that my only real G1 is a blank flank)

This is actually a bad thing, because if the symbol is damaged, that's it. You can't just turn the pony around and display her on the opposite side.

Yeah I have a Sweetie Swirl with a damaged cutiemark. I got her on ebay and knew she had a damaged cutiemark though. The only thing you can do is either try to restore it or live with it.

It never really bothered me. G3 are the ponies I loved the most as a wee lad. And the ones I am most familiar with (as well as the ones I love the absolute most.) So I got rather used to the idea of just having one symbol. I always thought of it as a condensed upgrade. In exchange for having more detail, colors and what-have-you they had to condenses two symbols on both sides into one. Don't get me wrong I adore G1 too, but G3 symbols just have so much more charm to them, and they just POP with color. Same with their mini symbols in the eyes, I love that!

as for the cutie-mark VS symbol debate I honestly bounce between the two of them when i type/talk but I prefer Symbol. I thought 'cutie-mark' was stupid, but just a wee bit cute in G3 because it was hardly ever mentioned. just a cute little word on the box. G4 beat the word into the ground. now it just sounds cheesy. When I was younger I just said "Tush-mark" or "Butt-brand"
