Title: Hellboy Pony
Post by: Alatariel-Silimaure on April 28, 2012, 09:11:26 AM
I finally finished him! I didn't do the facial hair on him since I don't feel comfortable enough with a plan to do it, so this will be young hellboy, maybe some day I'll put the facial hair on him when I can figure out how to get nylon hair in a nice beard :3

Very cool!!  I love his design!  Have you considered black flocking for his hair?

I considered it for a short while, I've seen others that have done it, and honestly I didn't like how it looked. His facial hair is fairly long, so I think the nylon hair inserted at the correct angle and combed properly would look the best, I'm thinking about experimenting with a different bait pony to see how it looks

I think that could be cool, but short nylon is very hard to control.  I'm guessing you'd rather not sculpt the hair?  I hope you do more, he is great!

Your sculpting skills are amazing! You picked a great bait pony for this project. This looks awesome, and the paint coverage is great, too. :)

I am interested in seeing your facial hair experimentation! I think it would be difficult to get nylon hair to do what you want it to. I'm not sure how you'd get the density you need. Sculpting out the facial hair and then flocking it might be a good thing to try during this process if the nylon is too unruly. :)

I've seen it sculpted too, never cared for it. That's why I'm so on the fence about it, I've seen the facial hair done several ways and every time I didn't like it, so I'm terrified to try something myself on it.

I've got several more I've done actually, I just recently discovered this site, but I've been doing ponies for a few years and I've got them up on my DA

@Bergamot: Thank you :3 I'm just so scared of ruining him because he turned out so great that I'm avoiding the facial hair aspect

I think your idea of trying the hair out on another bait is good! :) I understand how it would be scary; you have a beautiful pony as it is! If you -do- get the nylon to behave, I think it would look great!

You could consider using something that's inherently denser, too, like the "troll hair" stuff that they used for Shining Armor's mane. It's getting a bad rap right now as far as out-of-the-box toys are concerned, but I bet it would work pretty well for the type of facial hair you're trying to make!

forgive me, but I don't know anything about the new my little ponies at all, so I'm not sure what that hair is, I don't even know who shining armor is. I've been refusing to watch the new mlp after seeing twinkle wish adventure >_<

Hahah, I've been a huge fan of the toys since I was a little girl, but I'm not familiar with any of the TV series except for the one that ties in with G4. "Friendship is Magic" is a much different critter than the show's previous incarnations from what I've read, though!

Here's a good thread about the Shining Armor toy, with some deconstruction photos. The last mohawk photo is precious, and so "Troll Hair." :P

ooooh I love him!

A little beard would look ace - if the nylon proves tricky to style, how about a tiny bit of product in it to help keep it in check? Polypropylene is a little stiffer so may work well?

thank you so much :3

I may be looking to sell him, but I want to experiment on a few baits with facial hair first and see if I can make facial hair work

I want to practice with facial hair, but I was thinking that smaller, closer holes with not as much hair and maybe kankelon or that acetate hair Dolly hair's got...If I ever find the time:/  Never hurts to practice on a bait.  I had a nasty Cherries Jubilee that had what looked like rainbow-colored neevuses everywhereXD  Shame I didn't save her just for horror value.
