So, I'm all out of animations to watch, what films do you guys love and think I need to see?
I just watched the stunningly beautiful Book of Kells, and very much enjoyed it, and some of my absolute favourites are Nightmare Before Christmas, Howls Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro, Hedgehog in the Mist, Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
I'm not overly keen on Disney as I often find them too girly and frilly but maybe you know of some exeptions to this?
Come on and post your favourite animations (series are welcome too)!
-
The Last Unicorn is a must if you haven't seen it already. ;) I'm also fond of Bolt and How To Train Your Dragon.
-
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron. Wonderful animation and story (I immediately ran out and bought the soundtrack after seeing it lol!)
-
I've recently seen the Secret World of Arietey(sp) and loved it!
Some of my favorites are spirit, howls moving castle, spirited away, the last unicorn, Winter Cicaeda and a bunch more I cant remember XD
-
I only know Disney, but I'd recommend The Lion King. It's really good. :)
Also, Ponyo, since you seem to like Hayao Miyazaki. ^^
-
LION KING! XD And Robin Hood. Both Disney but I love 'em. Meet the Robinsons and Bolt are really good Disney.
Non Disney...Land Before Time...the first one.
Shrek 1 and 2, of course.
The Ice Age movies.
-
The Lion King, Bolt and Aladdin might be of interest.
Also, The Land Before Time (like hyenacub has said - The first one, unless you don't mind a much more kiddy atmosphere), The First Snow of Winter, Legend of the Guardians. I happen to enjoy pretty much any film by Studio Ghibli too.
EDIT: Oh, and Vuk (The Little Fox).
-
Avatar: The Last Airbender (the series !!) and the brand new series of Avatar too ! Haven't watched any episodes of that yet, but I will !
Also, How to Train Your Dragon is very good and Tangled as well ! After this, every Hayao Miyazaki film is just worth every moment.
And... go to youtube and watch "Rejeted" by Don Hartfeldtz. ;D
-
Balto
The Last Unicorn
Bolt
-
Just about any Don Bluth movie
Balto
How to Train Your Dragon
the original 80s Transformers movie
the animated Redwall series
-
I agree, any Don Bluth movie!
And of course How to Train Your Dragon.
Despicable Me
The Emperor's New Groove
The Road to El Dorado
Cats Don't Dance
Chicken Run
xD that's more like my "movies to rewatch" list lol.
-
Second Cats Don't Dance.
-
The Cat Returns
-
LOVE Cat's Don't Dance! :D
Tangled (it made me cry :') )
The Land Before Time (first one)
Despicable Me (also made me cry)
The Last Unicorn
UP! (yeah I cried during this one too. See a pattern here, )
The Secret of NIMH
-
anything miyazaki!!! Steam boy, fern gully, or was it gulley? once upon a forest, millennium actress, I second the last unicorn, my name is umasou (in japanese, but they have eng subs on youtube!)
-
Titan A.E. is my fav. ♥
-
This is a subject I could go on... and on... and on about! :D
ANYTHING by Pixar (I am SOOO stoked for Brave to be released... it's ridiculous)....
You already know about Miyazaki... and The Secret of Kells (my absolutely FAV bit of animation in YEARS...)
If you like Stop Motion: Coraline (If you love Nightmare before Xmas... you'll LOVE this one), any of the Wallace & Gromit series... Corpse Bride.... and the upcoming Paranorman looks awesome as well!!!
Various TV series, not currently on TV: GARGOYLES (best... animated... tv series... EVER), Avatar: The Last Airbender... Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (more so than the original FMA... but both series are excellent. Brotherhood is just more cohesive....). Batman Beyond (Best Batman ever!!).
Various TV series currently on TV: as someone already mentioned... the "followup series" to Avatar, is now on Nickelodeon... Legend of Korra; and only 3 episodes into it... and it's COMPLETELY EPIC!!! Young Justice (also epic! mostly because Greg Weisman... the creative genious behind Gargoyles... is heavily involved in it!)... Transformers Prime (Yup... Peter Cullen can read the phone book to me ANY day! ), and of course... THUNDERCATS!
Other animated movies: Surf's Up (sooooo much better than Happy Feet!), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (I wish the story had been stronger, but the animation is spot on and a pleasure to watch!), Secret of NIMH (oldie but a goodie!).... Definately How to Train Your Dragon (have you SEEN the previews for the stage show!?!?)
GAH I know I have more down in my "collection"... but my brain is now mush...
-
I cried at UP also lol
I second How To Train Your Dragon!
And Despicable Me! That one's a little awkward at times, but the story more than makes up for it And the acting. XD
-
"The Book of Kells" sounds awesome, especially for an illuminated manuscript freak like me, thanks for mentioning it :-)
I would definitely recommend the Last Unicorn (since it's my favourite movie EVER) but I also liked Miyazaki's Nausicaa and Tales from Earthsea. I know you said no Disney, but Robin Hood was so much a part of my childhood that I can't NOT recommend it, and Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an incredible movie, and not frilly in the least (as a kid, I never used to watch it because the cruelty of the baddie Claude Frollo scared me too much, so seriously, it's not really children's film) and is a very interesting interpretation of the book.
If you're looking for more adult-orientated stuff, then Fire and Ice is very good (a beautifully animated sword and sorcery flick), I must also admit to being impressed by Vampire Hunter D (I'm sorry, good taste!), the animated Lord of the Rings film is also an interesting curiosity, I'm also pretty sure there was a Cowboy Bebop film, which I guess can be watched without prior knowledge of the series. And if (and only IF) you don't mind watching people's heads exploding, then see Fist of the North Star, it's quite impressive if you don't mind animated violence.
And I'm sure there are many more, I just love animated movies :-)
-
lion king 1,2 and 1.5
spirit stallion of the cimarron
the animated adventures of the silver brumby
duck tales
-
I also recommend The Last Unicorn, since it's one of my favorite movies (and books) ever.
The Plague Dogs is an amazing film. Very dark and bleak. It was made by the same people who made Watership Down (which is also a great animated movie) and is based on another book by Richard Adams. Another one of my favorite books/movies ever.
If you like Ghibli then their lesser known films are worth seeing. Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday...
Cats Don't Dance, 9, The Dark Crystal (if puppets count...), The Iron Giant, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, anything by Satoshi Kon.
-
I LOVE animated movies, so this list is going to be a little long.
Jungle Emperor Leo. Absolutely beautiful movie, I also recommend Jungle Emperor Leo The Brave Can Change the Future (it hasn't been dubbed in English yet, but if you don't mind subtitles, you can find subs online).
The Prince of Egypt
Road to El-Dorado
Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron
The Swan Princess
Balto
Kung Fu Panda
Summer Wars
Ringing Bell
The Dog of Flanders
The Fox and the Hound and Bambi (I know you said you don't care for Disney movies, but I can't not recommend these)
The Last Unicorn
The Plague Dogs
Watership Down
The Cat Returns
Princess Mononoke
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
The Iron Giant
Anything Don Bluth
Cats Don't Dance
If you need more, there are plenty more I can recommend!! :)
-
all dogs go to heaven
-
Oh wow... I've seen a couple of people recommend Don Bluth, and I absolutely concur with The Secret of NIMH. It is up there in my all time favourite movies - beautifully (no... stunningly) animated, and a courageous story. Don Bluth made it after he walked out on the cutsie-pie-ness of Disney, so it might be right up your alley, little.fox. It has grit, a great villain, lovely soundtrack, and if I were a rat, I might just marry Justin...
(ok, so I love this movie just a little bit....)
It's based on the book Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, but differs in many ways. I actually liked the movie more! Bluth did later re-collaborate with Disney I think, for An American Tale etc...
Someone else mentioned Fire and Ice/Lord of the Rings etc... Ralph Bakshi did some pretty awesome, out there stuff, another adultish one is Wizards (interesting and relevant themes). A great one for those into fantasy.
I'll also second Despicable Me, possibly the MOST quoted movie in our house!!
Looks like people have made some great recommendations so you have some good viewing ahead. Another one from the era of the Last Unicorn is the Flight of Dragons - another of my favourites, though it might be tricky to find on DVD.
Happy viewing!
-
Thanks very much guys! I've got a long "to see" list now, so many of these look awesome!
I was sceptical to Don Bluth, but I will def give The Secret of NIMH a watch now!
-
I have to agree with the Don Bluth movies, especially The Secret of NIMH. But I might be a little biased, since he's my mother's first cousin. :P And he'd be happy to know that his movies are so loved!
-
The Secret of Kells is amazing! I finally got around to watching it adn it's beautiful
anything by Miyazaki
The Last Unicorn
Cat Soup (it's a little out there, and no spoken words, but it's pretty cool)
-

OMG - you're kidding!! LOL! I hope I had my facts right, then!!! If you ever see him, tell him I absolutely worship that movie!!!
ok - just had a quick read on Wiki!! I did have it wrong, later films like American Tale and Land Before Time etc were collaborations with Speiberg, not Disney - oops!!
-
The Last Unicorn too.
-
I second Don Bluth's films. :) They have such distinctive animation, very fluid & gorgeous.
The Iron Giant is also brilliant.
-
Ringing Bell
I love that movie, I remember it as a kid.
Here are some other good "old school" animated films.
The Black Cauldron
An American Tail
Watership Down
Oliver & Company
Rikki-Tikki-Tav
All Dogs Go to Heaven
The Rescuers
Black Beauty
The Sea Prince and the Fire Child
-
Might be a bit hard to find , but I enjoyed a movie called Nocturna.
Futurama movies for silliness.
The Adventures of Unico,an old childhood fav of mine,
Tokyo Godfathers,
Dinosaur
,Spirited Away,
An American Tale,
-

Wizards is AMAZING. Also, if you can get your hands on it, Rock and Rule is worth a watch.
If non-cutesy Disney is up your alley, watch The Black Cauldron.
-
Titan A.E. is my fav. ♥
Yay, someone else who knows of it!
-
There are already some really great titles suggested, I'll try to add some that haven't been mentioned... there's "Felidae", it's originally German (from 1994) but I found an english dubbed copy. It's a bit PG-13 at some points (gore, cats in heat lol [nothing racey is actually shown]), but an awesome watch none-the-less! This one is a series, but "The Maxx" (based on the comic books) is incredibly enjoyable as well. As far as new animation goes, I'm absolutely taken with the new "Tintin and the Secret of the Unicorn". I definitely back up the recommendations of any Bluth stuff (especially "The Secret of Nimh"), the "Gargoyles" series and "The Iron Giant"- did you know Lauren faust worked on that last one? If "Spirited Away" wasn't mentioned yet- it's a MUST watch in my book :) anything Ghibli is, really ("Grave of the Fireflies" and "Totoro" are my faves, even if the first title makes me cry like a baby!) <3
-
An interesting film to look up might be "the magic pony" or sometimes called "the humpback horse" from 1977 but it might be hard to find an english version.
It's a strange Russian Fairy tale, the animation is nice if the designs don't through you off (it's pretty old). I always wondered how much in might have influenced MLP

What a strange coincidence - Watched this one last night for the first time whilst browsing Youtube! Also agreeing though, if you're looking for something not so kiddy, this is a must. I find it to be beautifully animated too.
...Probably shouldn't have watched it so late at night though, haha.
-
Iron Giant. Great movie.
-
I'm so glad Felidae was brought up! I love that movie... but uncensored it's pretty adult.
How has nobody said Megamind yet? I thought that movie was brilliant. It's become one of my top favorites within this past year.
And The Land Before Time- the first one, is a very good film in its own right too. It's responsible for my childhood love of dinosaurs.
As for non-cute Disney, might I also recommend The Great Mouse Detective? It's not particularly dark, but it does have its moments of intensity, a great hero and great villain with a wonderful tension that plays out so nicely in the climax. It's another of my favorite films.
WALL-E and Up are some very good, mature films from Pixar, but my favorite Pixar movie is and always will be Finding Nemo. It may be a bit too cutesy for what you're looking for, but I think it has the most gorgeous animation.
-
I always love the Don Bluth films- Secret of NIMH, Anastasia, All Dogs go to heaven, Land bafore Time- his stuff is really underrated! :)
-
The Iron Giant
Under the Red Hood (if you're familiar with DC, particularly Batman)
The Incredibles
Young Justice (again, DC)
Archer
-
Under the Red Hood (if you're familiar with DC, particularly Batman)
Err, yes you could say I'm familiar with Batman, he's the love of my life. (dont tell my bf)
-
Not a Lion King or a Dreamworks flick, or anything like that, but Waltz With Bashir is well worth watching. It's an animated documentary, with interviews from people who served during the Lebanon War in 1982. It was filmed, then animations were made of the interviews, there are also original sequences that depict what the people being interviewed are telling.
It's intense, and very graphic, but it's brilliant.

That's fine, I'm not looking for Dreamworks stuff! I'm not too good with really violent stuff, but this sounds really good, I might have to give it a go. Thanks!
-
NIHM comes to mind. So does Secret of Kells, but I think you mentioned that already.
I enjoyed Genius Party and Robot Carnival...
oh and Plague Dogs.
JESUS PLAGUE DOGS MY HEART WAS RIPPED OUT MY CHEST AND STAMPED UPON...
There's also a lot of Russian animation that is really good, but hard to find with subtitles.
Others are Le Chat du Rabbin and Persepolis.
-
DON'T watch watership down what ever people may say. Its a horriffic nightmare of a film and left me sleepless for months when I saw it..
I love laputa castle in the sky and ponyo. Also the 2 fievel films Anastasia, Phantom Cat ( never made a film but the episodes are ok) Up!, Emporers new groove and futerama
-
Sorry if these have already been mentioned and I missed it, but here's a few, some of them will take some searching,
Oldies:
Unico (there's two unico movies, both are great, should be able to watch in parts via Youtube)
Sea Prince and the Firechild
Journey Through Fairyland (its like if you took the fairy segments from Fantasia and made an entire movie of it)
Last Unicorn (of course)
Destino (think it finally got a new release recently)
Rupert and the Frogs
Plague Dogs
Watership Down
Not as pretty, but very interesting:
Fire and Ice (netflix has it)
The Devil and Daniel Mouse
Max and Mary (sad, ugly animation, but fantastic movie and well done Stop Motion)
I'm sure since you listed two Miyazaki movies you've already looked up other Studio Ghibli films, but if you haven't, here's my favs:
Nausica of the Valley of the Winds
Castle in the Sky
Pom Poko
Other Anime:
Cat Soup
Dead Leaves
-
I saw pom poko over the xmas hols. It was very strange and quite an eye opener.
I saw things that should never be seen in a cartoon...
-
My favourites:
All Dogs Go To Heaven
The Lion King
Titan AE
Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (it sounds lame, but it's REALLY good!)
Spirited Away (<333)
The Cat Returns
Brother Bear
Fern Gully
Treasure Planet
Corpse Bride
The Land Before Time
Finding Nemo
Monster's Inc
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron
And there's one that I can't remember the name of. It's about a sheep who wears a bell around his neck and gets stolen by a wolf. He grows up with the wolf and returns to his sheep herd who all think he's evil... Then one one of the sheep sees his bell and recognizes him...Someone help me out here. D:
I /would/ recommend The Prince of Egypt, but it's pretty religion-heavy and I don't know where you stand on that. ^^' Beautiful movie, though. I /love/ the animation.
-

Ringing Bell/Chirin no Suzu! Amazing movie.

YES!
I might need to go watch that again. Haven't seen it in years.
-
I second Summer Wars. Really enjoyed that movie.
