Title: International "Exclusives"?
Post by: GloriaFan on April 18, 2012, 10:29:55 AM
Hi  :)

Excuse my newbieness but - how many ponies were "exclusives" to foreign countries during MLP's run? Not like ponies in different poses/colors/etc. but completely different ponies.

Thanks in advance for any info!  :)

I guess that depends on what generation you're looking for.   There's a lot of great websites that show you which ones and where. :)  Unfortunately with all my moving I lost all my ponies tabs or else I'd hook you up.

you may want to ask this question in the corral as well ;) nirvana ponies are little different to exclusive ponies, though some exclusive ponies made it under the nirvana umbrella when the term "nirvana" was coined ~ these being the german and dutch ponies as well as the scandinavian ponies and alternate birthflower ponies.

try this website :) it list ponies by country as well as showing UK, german and netherlands exlusive ponies

http://www.strawberryreef.com/Index/G1/G1country.html (http://www.strawberryreef.com/Index/G1/G1country.html)

have you looked at the nirvana gallery? that shows almost all known nirvana ponies :)

http://mlparena.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=20319 (http://mlparena.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=20319)

UK ~ these are not classed as nirvana, but the UK got runs such as the mountain boys that were not released anywhere else. there are ponies such as the jewellery babies, the family ponies but the got release in other parts of europe too. There are mail order ponies that were part of the UK Pony Club :)

German ~ these are a grey area nirvana wise, but nightlight and raindrop are totally "new" ponies. germany did get some unqiue baby ponies, but some got released elsewhere in europe too.

Netherlands ~ these again are a grey area and are not "new" ponies so to speak as they are variants of other ponies, just in different colours :)

Europe as a whole ~ europe did get a whole bunch of ponies that the US didn't get, but it worked the other way too, the US got ponies that europe never got to see  :)

Gosh...ready for the long list - we ll go by year order for easiness and no doubt I ll miss someone or make a little mistake!

I am also not sure how strict you are being with "not ponies in different colours" as even the Dutch ponies which seem pretty "unique" are in fact just reusing the same symbols and the same poses in some cases of earlier released "Euro" exclusives - i.e. Dutch Butterfly and Mummy Meadowsweet...etc. So below I have listed ponies/sets which only came with that symbol and that pose and were only available outside the US

UK/Euro
Play & Care - Baby AppleJack
Baby Stroller - Baby Bow Tie
Sea - Surfdancer & Seaspray
My Little Pony - Hopscotch, Snowflake, Gypsy, Honeycomb
Baby Stroller - Baby Lemon Drop
Mountain Boys
Regenbogen - Raindrop & Nightlight
Baby - Baby Honeycomb, Baby Buttons, Baby Hopscotch, Baby Cherries Jubilee
Loving Familes - Baby Bro Apple Delight, Baby Sister Sweet Celebrations, Baby Bro Bright Bouquet
Flower Ponies
Schooltime Ponies
Playschool Babies
Romance Ponies
Cookery Ponies
Sweet Kisses Ponies
Tales/7 Friends Ponies
Hairdo Ponies
Rollerskate
Princess Sparkle
Family Friends & Babies
Jewellery Babies
Seaside Babies
Sweetie Babies
Newborn Surprise
Great Hair
Surprise Twins Mummy
Nurse Ponies
Nestie Babies
Activity Club Babies
Kisscurl
Sweet Clover
Good Weather
Cascade
Rossette
Tutti Fruitti

Its surprisingly difficult when you start to think "oh thats unique" and then go...huh no its not really....its only the later years where whole sets are obvious...

Thanks for the info, hathorcat! I also found this page (http://www.ponylandpress.com/europe/) which has photos of (most of) the UK exclusive releases.

ponylandpress is a great website! Hopefully that will help you track them all down if you are searching for them.

I pose this question to kinda turn things around:
So what G1's were US exclusive only and not available in the UK (just MO's?)?

(I've wondered this for awhile, as I'd like to trade out of the US more...)

Depressingly LOTS!!!!

There were a lot of sets which were pared down to only 4 ponies from the US 6 and even a couple of sets which were smooshed together so that we only got a few from each [Fancy Pants & Playtime Baby Bro]. And there are even more common US ponies - such as Moondancer, Glory - who didnt make it over here at all and even some massive sets [we didnt get So Softs].

In many ways there were probably about the same number who didnt make it to UK from US line as didnt make it from the UK line to the US. It seems that our patterns were different - the line was much more extensive and varied in the early years in the US and then tails off towards the end of the line, whereas over here it started quieter and then ended when the number of sets was at its max! Very odd.

Due to most of the ponies that we missed out on being ones which are reasonably common they are easy enough to track down...the exception of course the MOs as you mentioned...of which we only got a handful through leaflets or through the Fan Club [Lucky, MM Windy, the Talking Ponies, Pony Bride and a few others I cant remember off the top of my head]. Therefore finding MOs second hand over here or even on ebay uk [unless being sold by a collector] is probably not going to happen - for such ponies thank goodness for ebay.com. However, you could expand this to the other more common ponies who were not sold here as in many ways its equally true - you will probably not come across someone selling a SS Lofty [for example] second hand or on ebay uk from a childhood collection...simply as they were not sold here...as a UK collector unless a UK/Euro collector is selling items from their collection I would have to [and I have for most of my collection] buy "in" from the US [or some other Euro countries which got them]

Does that make sense?
