Title: When will pony collectors be on "My Strange Obsession"?
Post by: RockinPrettyBeats on April 04, 2012, 08:44:09 AM
I see all these photos of "pony rooms" and can envision some of these being on the show.

But maybe to be on an episode you need to have your whole house covered in ponies?

Either way, someone needs to contact the show!

The big question is "Do you REALLY want to be on that show?".
If you go on a show like that, you get laughed at and not everybody can take that.

its not something i'd want to be on. i get made fun of enough for collecting ponies. and to have pony collectors be in that kind of light, doesn't sound too good. i'm speaking for myself though of course. i don't like when people make fun of me for collecting "children's toys" or "wasting money on crap"

I am not sure about some of you guys, but if I was offered to be on that show I would politely decline. I like seeing people show off their collection as much as any other pony collector, but I feel like those shows more intend to 'make fun' of the people that are on there.

For real?!  You were offered to be on the show?  That is wild:)
Pony collecting is hot right now, so I'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone does the show.  I just hope they don't mock our community, the show really portrays these people as being insane freaks.

I wouldn't want us to be.  Each collector that ends up on that show has their collection belittled and the comments are terribly offensive!  I think it's sweet that people collect things - it's NOT cool to make fun of them for building a playground for their dolls or dusting their carrot collectibles, or arranging their NASCAR cars in "historical race moments".  :(

If it makes you happy, and doesn't infringe on the rights or freedoms of others, I say go for it.  We all get a limited time to spend living our lives, why not live them in whatever way makes you happiest?  I wouldn't want to be on that show either; the backlash against the featured individuals is awful.  I doubt I'm "extreme" enough to meet their standards anyways.
Title: Re: When will pony collectors be on "My Strange Obsession"?

Well first off, My Strange Addiction and My Strange Obsession are completely different. On the addiction one the premise is that they need "help".

On the obsession one it's very lighthearted. Sure some people are more cooky than others but in my opinion they aren't making fun of anyone. I think the show is done very well and I love seeing all the collections.

For 80% of the time the episode is like this:

1. Introduction to person & Collection

2. Person enjoying collection

3. History/reason of collection

4. Person hunting for something need for collection.

5. Person finds what they were looking for.

I very much enjoy the show. Yes, some people have problems with money but some are fairly secure and have a reasonable life.

However, I do agree that they probably ask the person to do something a little more nutty than what they would normally do. Like on the cabbage patch one, I doubt that guy actually brought that doll everywhere. I think he just did it for the camera.

I'm sure it will happen soon enough though. I mean, there is the Cabbage Patch one so there will be more 80s toy collectors.

Sorry, I don't understand what do you mean they have their collections belittled? Do you mean on the show? I always thought the narrator was fairly monotone.

I'm not really aware of any backlash either. Do you guys mean on forums?

I would absolutely be on that show if they paid well enough, I don't care if people know how much I love ponies :)  I probably don't have quite enough to qualify though since I only have a 1 bedroom apartment and therefore no dedicated pony room.  But yeah, making money talking about something I love? Sign me up!

I really like keeping the collecting community on the downlow, personally. I mean, we're 'out there' enough with the FiM fad as it is. :/ I just don't feel like we need to go on national television and talk about how much some of our little ponies are worth...can't you imagine what that could do? You'd never ever find ponies second hand again - they'd all be going to flea markets or ebay with starting prices of $50 each or something.

Why not just be content with how things are without letting the whole world know? Be happy with your collection and that you can still add to it from thrift stores and the like without resellers buying everything up and trying to sell it for crazy prices.

I know MustBeJewel made a documentary about pony collectors called "My Little Obsession" if that's what you're talking about Salpy.  I personally haven't seen it, but I hear it is a must for any collectors.
Sorry Zetta, I've been reading a lot of things wrong lately!!  I think it's from spending so much time working on the computer, my brain is being eaten away (by zombie ponies).

Knitgirl - That's the spirit! If any of these people get any kind of backlash it's not the shows fault, it's the person giving them crap. I can't imagine carrot lady going into a store and getting made fun of. Maybe someone will ask for a picture but seriously, the show isn't THAT popular and the people aren't made fun of on it.

PinkRoseDust - I know what you mean but on the Cabbage Patch kids they never so much as mentioned one price for any of the dolls. They just said what they paid for the entire collection including the buildings they stored them in.

If they went too much into the price I'd be with you on that. At the most, it would create a phase were people pony hunt but it would die out because sellers would realize it's not actually worth the time and effort to try and buy and resell ponies for a living.

I'll never understand why some people feel the need to insult collectors.
Collecting is such a fun hobby, it's completely harmless (hopefully!), a neat way to pass the time, & makes people happy. The thrill of the hunt in particular! :3  I can't imagine not having any passions in life, it must be awful.
I wouldn't be on the show personally though; I'm seriously lacking in the confidence department. xD

Yeah, I love looking at collections.

I think they need a show simply titled "collectors" and it will be about people's collections. That way it wouldn't only include people who have their entire home dedicated to it.

I don't find the show itself to be negative towards the featured individuals, but if you poke around internet searches, blogs, youtube and the like, there is plenty of backlash out there.

^Yes, this!
One thing I really hate about the internet is that because of the lack of face-to-face interaction, people take it as an excuse to be bigger asses to one another. :(

I've seen the show with other people, and their comments are no where near as hurtful or even negative as they are online.
That said I have to admit I was totally thinking what if there was a pony collector episode? xD But then I thought about it more and I really don't think I could imagine any pony collectors doing that.

I'll admit, I would accept if someone offered me a chance to be on the show.  I am at a point where I really need to get rid of my toys, but I have a hard time letting go.  It might be the kick in the tail I need to actually work on getting rid of all this stuff and not buy any more toys :P

the episode with the cabbage patch kids, their collection was 5,000 dolls. which would mean that they would have to own one of each doll ever since they came out til nowish. does anyone actually have 5,000 or more individual ponies? since there are many playsets and too hard to have every piece of accessory to make it be an obsession of owning every mlp item known. if there turns out to be someone who does, that would be a very interesting and exciting show to see all those ponies.

This.  While I love sharing my collection with people I know and other collectors, I'd rather not tell the whole world - and watch every secondhand pony possibility dry up.  Plus, I don't like to open myself up to being made fun of.  But that's just me.

Actually, there was a show by that title that aired on the ABC (publicly-owned broadcaster) here in Australia for a number of years. It was effectively what you describe. A show about collectors and the things they collect, presented in a friendly documentary format with a host who just seemed fascinated with everything that all these people loved and collected. I really miss it, actually. Very interesting stuff.

Actually, it was the episode of that show about somebody's toy collection that was what made my dad stop complaining about my Transformers when I was in my late teens. "That one I got you when you were a kid is now worth HOW MUCH?! WOW!"

Too much on the tele around this subject nowadays is just shock reality-TV rubbish. "WHOA, get a load of this freak and the crap he fills his house with! Now, feel better about yourself because you aren't like this guy, ho ho!"

Buttonmasher - The other problem with shows that may not be about collections but show items and collections (like Pawn Stars) is that they are so misinformed about the value. They quote the value for some of the items so ridiculously that it makes me sick. Then everyone thinks it's true and collectors at home are just shaking their heads.

The "Collectors" show sounds like a good one. I also liked "Cash in the Attic" but one thing that drove me crazy about it was the narrator and the poor quality of the film.

I remember that episode. And yeah, they DO make people stretch the truth.

They did that with this one gal I sorta know-ish through the old Turtles fandom. She's a perfectly normal and NOT crazy gal, but they pushed the envelope and made her seem CRAZY!

She said she finally saw the episode, she was totally peeved at them.

The title of the show is offensive as it is. Even when they try to keep their episodes neutral, things always get out of hand. They are always insulting and those types of shows often end with the subject agreeing to go to therapy. There have been a few shows on television about obsessions, I remember VH1 used to have one. My suggestion to pony collectors: stay away! No matter how you try to portray yourself and your hobby, they will always twist it around because they get higher ratings the weirder the episode is.

I love some of the stuff others are saying, especially about the friendly Australian show about collectors. Something like that sounds pretty safe and really fun. I'd love to watch a show that amicably explores people's various collections!

For now, let's all just happily agree to show each other our massive collections. I demand more pictures of pony rooms!

Hopefully NEVER!

I'd rather see a pony collector on a show like the Travel Channel's, "Toy Hunters" ( new show coming out. It's like American Pickers, but it focuses around TOY COLLECTORS SPECIFICALLY.

http://www.travelchannel.com/video/toy-hunters

It puts us in a better light, and shows that there actually can be and IS serious money in toy collecting.

Jordan actually got a section started on the Travel Channel website for toy collectors to be able to show off their collections, and have them rated by others from around the world! You know I had to do it, and it became an excuse to take updated pictures of my own collections.

First pony collector up there! WOO!

Sigh. This is exactly the problem I was talking about. Do you REALLY want thousands more people knowing (or thinking they know) about how much we value some ponies? People will be trying to sell McDonalds ponies for 20 bucks! Resellers will start buying every pony they can and there will be nothing left to find in thrift stores or at flea markets! This wouldn't help us...

Face it...if you have parents or someone who is against your collecting, they probably will not change their mind just because they see a collector on TV.  Don't let other people bully you about your collection. If it makes you happy, tell them that and change the subject. I just don't see how showing it to the whole world over the TV will make things better for us. All I see is it making things worse. I really can't support an idea that would or could make collecting more difficult for the whole community...
Title: Re: When will pony collectors be on "My Strange Obsession"?

But for some people, ponies can longer be found at flea markets anyway... I think most of the 'pony well' has dried up already, so to speak....

I only have around 200 ponies so I'd never be picked for a show, but if I was, I'd go for it. I don't really care what people think of me or have anything to lose.

I love Toy Hunters! I about dropped my jaw when he found a prototype Boba Fett in Cincinnati at the comic store!  Wow. I will have to keep my eye

Back on topic, I do know that on EQ months ago, bronies were being contacted to be on TV, and somebody uncovered the production company was behind the My Strange Addiction show. This was before My Strange Obsession aired.

I think that any one featured on such shows is done by sideshow value.

I am a furry and I saw this episode.  I was actually really upset by it, because we found out that she was paid $1500 to lie about the community.  I don't know anyone that must go out in suit all the time and they had to mention one of the negatives about us that could have easily been left out of the whole episode.  Because of how badly that show portrayed furries I would never wish that on someone that collected ponies.

I have only seen "My Strange Addiction" so far. I want to watch "My Crazy Obsession" though...

I think we have to keep in mind that a lot of people think huge collections of anything are crazy with or without it being televised, so not much can help that. It would be cool for the idea of pony collecting to get some exposure, just to show "haters" (lol) that it's not so uncommon and weird, that other people do collect them. Then again, it may cause a huge change in things -- like the extreme couponing show has really changed couponing rules and cause a lot more people to started using coupons. :/ But that was a whole series. I dunno.

I'd do it, but I don't think my boyfriend would be comfortable with cameras in our home, and I just have a pony closet, not a pony room.

No, I don't want any pony collectors on My Strange Obsession. I've only seen a couple of episodes of the show, and only two of the people sort of freaked me out. I love the Cabbage Patch couple. They went out of their way to name every doll in their collection. Which I find adorable. I also like the cat people. Who doesn't like a house full of cat stuff? The show does tend to mock collectors. I think the guy with the oval office might be able to sell his house for a good bit of money. I'm sure someone would be willing to spend a crap load of money for their own oval office. -.-

Toy Hunters featured toys that most people would know are collectible. Like Star Wars.

I know for myself I would not ever want to be on the show.  That show gives collectors a bad name in my opinion.  I don't expect the world to understand my interests and I have no desire to be made fun of by people that just don't get it LOL. They don't make anyone on that show look normal.  I watch it all of the time.  They could have made collecting look rewarding and fun like the Antique Roadshow does..but instead they just make it look like a collector is a freak.  Like that 1950's lady, I thought she was very interesting as I love the 1950's and she really has gone all out with herself, her home and other stuff. I would love to have a chance to visit her home and see all her stuff and ride in her car.  I have a lot of interest in vintage things besides toys and dolls. She was interesting.  The washers show was interesting also to me..there is a history there with those machines.  However there have been a few episodes that scared me the people were so off in my terms...I wonder if they are not that way at all. TV can make people look so odd.  I love the show, but like I said its not really a positive show.

I don't want any of my fandoms or collections featured on "My Strange Obsession." Look at the title.

That's the problem with TLC in general - it's there to show the audience "crazy" people to make them feel better about themselves. Their programming is made up of shows about relatively normal people. But they have their quirks, just like everyone else does. Plus, they use some clever editing techniques to make them look neutral, but invoke criticism from the audience by putting words in the subjects' mouths. I had a friend who was on "Toddlers and Tiaras." What the final episode looked like put her way out of character.

Bottom line - if I like something, I don't give a flying fish what anyone else thinks and I don't think I'm strange.

She was interesting.  The washers show was interesting also to me..there is a history there with those machines.  However there have been a few episodes that scared me the people were so off in my terms...I wonder if they are not that way at all. TV can make people look so odd.  I love the show, but like I said its not really a positive show.
Okay though I argree no one here should agree to be on the show how did I miss that! Though in '50's the Beatles weren't popular I LOVE THE 1950'S!It was such a decade it and the earily to mid 1960's are my over all favorite time period. Shoot, as a kid I made my ponies use to dance to doo woop and classic rock. How could pertending it was 1957 possibley be that strange. I could almost see my self pertending I lived in 1950's. Then again I didn't see the it.

its not something i'd want to be on. i get made fun of enough for collecting ponies. and to have pony collectors be in that kind of light, doesn't sound too good. i'm speaking for myself though of course. i don't like when people make fun of me for collecting "children's toys" or "wasting money on crap"

I completely agree.  People tell me that kind of stuff all the time and I hate it!  It makes me want to hide it from lots of people.

I wouldn't want to be on it, but I honestly don't want to be on TV period. I don't even like the idea of being in a newspaper article. And I could definitely see the backlash pony collectors would receive from this :-/ So...I kind of hope it's never. At the very least, if collectors were to be featured, I would hope it's a show with a less insulting title and doesn't make collectors out to be 'freaks'.
