I just sculpted a horn on one pony and I love how it looks! So I thought it'd be great to see your unicorns with sculpted/transplanted horns, too. ^^ I'm particularly interested in seeing unicorns in the G3 diva pose or the January Carnation pose, but all poses and generations are welcome. Winged unicorns, too - no matter if the wings are original or sculpted as long as it isn't any of the official unicorn poses.
Here are my two previous ones... Can't believe I haven't made more, I love unicorns. ^.^

Lovely ponies, everyone! :)
I would consider myself a decent sculptor, but for some reason I CANNOT SCULPT A FREAKIN' UNICORN HORN! Seriously, I have been trying for years. They either crumble, look weird, break while twisting, end up the wrong size...you name it, it has been a disaster for me. I am in awe and frankly a little jealous of all of these lovely horns. :P
-
Cookhuman, you're not alone! I have so much trouble getting the horns look decent. x_X Apoxie in particular is very difficult. Fimo is more flexible and takes twisting better. My peacock unicorn was sculpted with Fimo, and it's done by twisting only. Amity's horn is Apoxie, and I had to redo the horn countless times before I was satisfied, the twisting method did not work at all... The one I'm currently working on turned out much better. I started by covering the wire with Apoxie to make a smooth, spiky horn. Then I rolled a thin strip and wrapped it around the horn loosely, and started to blend it in. I don't have any pics to show yet but I think I managed to get it pretty decent looking. I think Amity's horn is too big for her. :/

That is genius! Thanks so much for the info! Guess who is going to try a unicorn horn tonight, lol?
BTW, Totally Off Topic - Griffin, I don't think I have ever told you, but you are one of my absolute favorite customizers. I love to peruse your DA page and have looked to your customs for inspiration before. You have an amazing eye for color, your detailed paintwork is top notch, and your sculpting is always spot on.
Okay, enough sucking up...let's get back to unicorn horns. :P

This was Sculpey, I don't twist my horns, I just make a point then make a spiral indentation using the side of an awl, a round toothpick would work too. I also, first, poke a hole in the head and insert a piece of wire (19 gauge?) and make a knot to anchor it inside. I feel like this makes the horn stronger, it's also easier to change the angle of the horn once I have sculpted it, and it hold it's shape really well during baking. I'm so good at explaining things, aren't I? :lookround: maybe not.
I have a horn on a Diva pose, but I can't post her yet because she is for a swap ;) I just finished baking the one one on a Jan Carnation pose, but haven't painted him yet. Here's just the head (I put sculpey over the eyes so I can make them big like I did on NMMoon. This is going to be Prince Shining Armor.

Here's inside of his head, it looks like my wires slipped down a bit, or the Sculpey pushed it back a bit during cooking.

Here he is standing, I think that's the Jan Carnation pose?

Here is my first g4 custom (in progress). She is going to be my ponysona, Cameo. She used to be a Fluttershy. I also put Sculpey over the eyes so I could make them how I wanted. (Baked for 17 min at 210*).

I was really proud of this one... and then my sweetie made a rather unflattering comparison... her new owner was happy and that's what matters.
BTW, the horn is tarnished copper in color, not brown mmkay.

Aww cookhuman  That totally made my day! We definitely need to talk about a trade, my collection needs a pony from you.

maybe not.
I do the same thing with wire. :) But I'd never be able to make my horns symmetric and beautiful with that method, I've tried and it didn't work out. Also, that style looks great on Nightmare Moon but I'm trying to go for a slightly more 'realistic' look, if that makes sense. ^^
Thanks again to everyone for sharing their pics, these are very inspirational!
Roogna, I never realised the pose you used for Tuneful would look that good as a unicorn! It's the same one as Ambar_Jul's swirly silver unicorn, right? And the on in my sig. (I'm so bad at G3 names... Pretty Pop is one of the ponies in this pose, isn't it?)
-
When you say 'realistic', do you mean like a real unicorn? like this:

or do you mean real like a real mlp unicorn?

Like a real unicorn... whatever that would be. :D Like a narwhal tusk, or the horns of ungulates. As opposed to the MLP style or other stylized/cartoony unicorns.
One of my favourite unicorn pictures ever is this one by the Windstone artist Melody Pena: http://reptanglian.deviantart.com/gallery/31810174#/d46bga7 (http://reptanglian.deviantart.com/gallery/31810174#/d46bga7)
I'd love to try a horn like that one day!

Wow, that horn is intense. I hope I see it when you do make it :D
