As an avid addict of Tumblr, Deviantart and other popular places on the internet, I have come across infinite memes, drawings, postings about this thing called Homestuck.
At first glance, it just looks like a bunch of weirdly drawn black and white midgets with candycorns on the tops of their heads. However, digging deeper and finding the source to all this madness was inevitable. It's popularity rising to rival even FIM, I took the plunge. I went to the website it started out on.
Turns out it is a "webcomic" that I attempted to read and....I don't get it. I don't understand.
Is it supposed to be a homeage to those old text-based RPGs we all played on our computers in the late 80's early 90's...?
The way it's written is insanely confusing and where it begins even someone like me with a fairly good understanding of things of the computer variety and nerd-dom, I still can't wrap my head around it.
Someone please explain to me what it is, why it's so popular and where to begin with all this madness.
I know some of you are into it.

Basically four kids play a game, things get serious. Timey wimey talk, chekov's armory, memes, in jokes, gags and an overlaying plot with so many interestingly written characters that a lot of people get attached to.
Personally, I find it's something VERY difficult to get into, but if you can slug your way through Act one, the plot stops wandering everywhere and things actually pick up. I find Homestuck is something that can't be looked at in a linear sort of way, but rather something you have to piece together and try to fill in the gaps yourself.
The very main reason why people love it? The characters. Without the characters, I doubt there would be as many people into Homestuck as they are now. There's plenty to get attached to and a need to learn more about them.
That and I think because it's so obscenely long, so utterly flowery and prose-t, that ANYONE who manages to keep up to date and managed the 6,000 pages is now bound to the story from the sheer fact that they managed it without going insane. :P So there's that.
Also the fandom itself is very expansive, something to rival the FiM fandom with it's music, digital art, cosplayers, ask blogs, fan theories and generally the fandom itself is somewhat of a draw I find. The fandom, like the FiM fandom is full of different people with so many different talents and coming from different walks of life, it's kind of hard to not fall into Homestuck and like it as much as I do.
Anyways, those are just what I observed, being a Homesticker myself.

I actually just started reading it today xD I saw lots of Homestuck cosplayers at an anime convention I went to over the weekend. Who knows if I'll actually make it through it though lol xD

I personally havent heard about it up until now. It sounds challenging to get throguh.

I find that the trolls are the only interesting characters. The humans don't excite me. But the worst part is that you don't meet the trolls until Act Four or so...

Wow I'm quite the opposite! I adore the kids and felt Act 5 was the hardest to get through because I simply didn't like a majority of the trolls, then they all had character development. I think that's the main draw for me. Homestuck has just enough to give you an idea but just enough wriggle room to fill in your head canons.
I love all of the characters at this point though :/

I got through most of act 2 I think and the whole thing is giving me a headache and I don't think I can really read anymore. I recently had to block any posts with homestuck in them on tumblr cause it was getting out of control. @_@
I might try again I just wanted to see why everyone loved these troll things so much.

Sounds as though lots of people enjoy it though...even though despite the explanation I still dont understand

I still have no understanding of it, but I do know I now feel like that guy in the bottom of the pircture! lol XD I also have no intention of trying to figure it out, sounds very boring to me.

I've just gotten into Homestuck, and it definitely isn't the easiest thing to read at first, but there are summaries throughout at the end of acts, and there's a Wiki. I'm somewhere in the end of Act 5 right now, I'm currently taking a break. I think it's worth getting through though, because when it's funny, it's REALLY funny. My biggest complaint is the trolls chat-speak. I suppose it helps define their personalities, but it has given me headaches.
