just as the title says... who's the queen?
-
MEEEEEEEE!!!!!
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
   Sorry, I couldn't resist. She's the ruling queen of my herd.
-
I believe Princess was used for a general term for the ponies because that is what most little girls understand more.
As a friend of mine explained it before to our group of friends, Celestia is actually an empress if you think about it.
-
lol michelle!!!!!!
sd_dreamcrystal: that's true... i wonder if she's married.
-
According to Lauren Faust, Celestia did start out as a full-blown queen. I've read that Hasbro/Studio B changed her to "Princess" because of Disney. Disney always portrayed princesses as kind and beautiful, while queens were snobby and evil. Of course, the only example of this concept that I can think of is the Snow White movie...
-
i kinda think i'd like her better as queen celestia
-
There doesn't need to be a queen in order for there to be a princess. :)
Celestia and Luna are the supreme rulers of a principality.

The Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland is pretty horrible too!

Yeah, I figured Celestia IS a queen, but she is called Princess because thanks to Disney little girls aspire to be princesses, not queens. (But I hope Celestia and MLP inspire a vision of princesses who are honorable, dutiful and enjoy learning.)

I'm not surprised you forgot about her, it took me a few minutes to think of her :P

Exactly.

I actually like the title "empress" for Celestia...that would have been awesome.

I was just thinking the same thing! :D
Theoretically, I just think princess is something that is easier for a little girl to aspire to, though. Not every Disney queen is evil - just all the ones who are actual characters in the movies are. I'd assume Rapunzel's mother (or Naveen's or Ariel's) are good queens. :)

That reasoning always disappointed me--FiM has done a great job of bucking stereotypes and cliches. Blowing raspberries at the "evil queen" cliche would have been right up the alley for this show!
-
It's also possible that a "queen" would be a bit intimidating to a little girl?

I admit, I smiled! I haven't heard this song in so long. XD

Empress would have been cool too though. Made me think of the Child like empress from neverending story. ^.^

That's exactly what I was thinking of!
-
Moooooon-child!
Sorry.. couldn't help myself :D

Why is making Celestia such a queen such a bad thing. Majesty and Rosedust are both queens....
-
Marketing marketing marketing. Disney has had huuuuuuuuuuge success with their 'Princess' line (which when you get into the deets of it, there's some Freemason eqsque weirdness going on with that line, seriously), as such the whole 'princess' thing is ingrained with this gens toy buyers more so than prior generations.

You're right. It'd be awesome if they started calling her "Queen Celestia" in season 3 and acted like, "Princess Celestia? She's always been a queen. You just need to pay more attention to the
show. ;) "
-
Ooorrrrrr it could be a principality?
A monarchy where the ruling title does not exceed Princess or Prince.
:p
-
MAJESTY!!! ;)
-
they made her a ruling princess because most people see queens as mean
-
Well, besides the whole Disney thing which other people have already covered, it could be that a princess is more accesible to where a little girl is at that point in here life. Presumably, she is cherished in her own home (kingdom) but she is not the highest authority. Her parents are.
That said, I love the idea of Empress Celestia, too.

Haha, that would be hilarious! People sometimes accuse the writers of "trolling" the audience....That would be an ACTUAL trolling! XD (Normally trolling makes me wince...but this would make me giggle.)
Unrelated, but I saw your username, location, and avatar, and now I want to crown you BEST PONY or something. :D
-
It's Peachy. She's old and she wears a hat. 'Nuff said.

This is how I always thought of it! :D
I wonder who will ascend to the throne if the two princesses were to die!?
-
Personally I like Supreme Overlord Celestia :P

Well, as per Disney, pretty much any feminine title except Princess is given to a nasty character.
Evil Queen in Snow White
Lady Tremaine in Cinderella
Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland
Queen Jadis in Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe
Evil Queen in Willow (not Disney, but the association is there and her daughter, the princess, starts out evil and ends up good)
Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty (she's not given a title, but she certainly seems to "rule" over her many demonic-looking minions, while the good faeries have no underlings at all)
Ursula (is royalty of some kind since she references having lived in the palace before)
The other variation of this is that the Queen serves only to be mom/role model to the princess/prince... in these cases, often she's not even given a name beyond "the queen"...
The Queen in Bug's Life
The Queen in Tangled
Queen Clarion in the Tinkerbell movies
Queen in Sleeping Beauty
Queen Athena in Little Mermaid 3
Queen Sarabi in Lion King
Hera in Hercules
Due to their source material (classic faerie tales and legends) women in power are usually portrayed as dangerous or, the other side of the coin, motherly... with dangerous being far more common since men were often penning these old stories and found the idea of powerful woman to be intimidating. Thus the archetype of a "princess" is much more common. Disney is not truly to blame, they are just using what history had given them.
This being said, they have branched out with strong, non-princess female characters; Mulan, Belle, and I very interested to see the new Pixar flick Brave.
Thus, when Lauren Faust and her team decided to make Celestia and Luna princesses, rather than Queens or Empresses or what-have-you, they were merely choosing what most people deem to be a less-threatening title.
Or maybe I am reading too much into this. :)

Lauren Faust has said publicly that she wanted Celestia to be queen, however. ;) But the studio always get final say! Such is life.
-
MAJESTY!!! ;)
Lol...this ^^^....
This Celestia and Luna...just pretenders to the throne!!!
