Title: What Was Your "Newbie" Mistake/Assumption?
Post by: hathorcat on March 04, 2012, 06:52:07 AM
So today I managed to dust one shelf...this is progress people honestly...

While I was doing it I came across my most embarrassing "newbie" mistake all those years ago...my rare White Haired Lickety Split.... :faint:

I paid £12 for her on ebay after I started collecting and I thought she was something special...lol...I have since upgraded to a better Lickety Split but something in my psyche will not let me part with this rare exclusive pony

So come on...we all had them when we started out what weird assumptions or silly mistakes did you make as a new collector [no matter how "new" you are, no matter how big or small!]

Mine was Steamer. His mane is flipped so the coloured streak was under the pink, and I thought it was some kind of factory error. I had looked at the manes on my other BBs and saw the coloured stripe on the outside, so I thought that the coloured stripe was in both rows of the mane, and Steamers was only in one. I think I even posted about it, so embarrassing :P

Letting my little cousins play with my Majesty... now she doesn't have a mane anymore. :/ Even if it did originally belong to thier mom, that's no reason for me to let them tear it up.

Only mistake I can think of was letting Mom put a red "J" on the bottom of Sky Skimmer's hoof.  It was only because my friend and I had the same pony and she wanted us to be able to tell them apart.  Of course, I was like four or five when that happened so the idea of anyone, especially myself, collecting these things in the future never crossed my mind.

I thought my G3 Kimono was something special. I had no idea she was more common xD

Edit: Something else, when I made my first custom I thought sealing was something only SUPER PROFESSIONALS did, so I didn't seal her. And then I found out what sealing was for. XD

Mine was paying waaaaay too much for the G1 Rice Krispie Christmas baby pony. I didn't necessarily think she was rare, but I thought she was something special. XD

my first ebay pony purchase never showed up.  I didn't realize I could file a report to get my money back, or work something out with the seller.  I remember it being a so soft magic star.  once it was moot point, I discovered there were steps you could take if your item didn't come!  silly me.

So far my onlymistake has been buying overprized Majesty but that is my fault really. I though she/he was nirvana but turned out to be a regular. Paid 15€ overprize.

Oh wait. I have an other. I was oxybathing Suprise with glitter symbols on my window in the sun. She was there a week and some of her ballons glitter came down. Not much though but maybe that is because mmy oxyclean(or whatever oxyacid was it) was put half in wanter so it wasn't that strong.

I haven't made any huuuuge newbie oopsies in collecting... hm... I have quite a few ponies with bite marks that I didn't see in pictures or notice in the thrift store haha, but they're all common G3s and such. I think most of my newbie mistakes were assuming I could fix certain flaws and then realizing hmmm... nope, I can't!

Thinking that Argie Flutterbye was the "elusive Pretty Bow" as it was speculated on Dream Valley many moons ago, and getting up at 3am to bid on her because I thought she was this "ghost pony who was only rumoured to exist"! :P Still, I didn't overpay and now have a really amusing story to tell about her so it was a nice mistake lol

Oh, and I nearly fell for the White Windy thing but couldn't find one when I was actively seeking her and then found out she was most likely just faded!

There have been quite a few ebay auctions when I got into a bidding war and paid way more than I wanted lol. And more than the pony was technically worth. Ebay is evil like that! XD

There've been many times I've bid on a lot because the seller hasn't had clear pictures and I "thought" I saw a special pony, which is mostly hidden, sticking out (and apparently others thought the same thing because they kept bidding me up) only to win it and find it's not the pony I thought it was.

Um, thinking Creamsicle was like forty bucks and freaking out when I won her for fifteen on eBay, but it wasn't so much a mistake because I paid reg price for her.

getting in a bidding war over bubbles but she is a pretty pony. I still have her. Umm paying 15 dollars on medley when I really didnt know what her average price was. Dunking ponies in oxy clean and ruining a batch.. some turned into custom ponies. :/ I don't use oxy clean for cleaning anymore.

I don't think I've done anything too horrible...The silliest thing I probably did was repair and rehair a chewed up Pinkie Pie when I first got here....but to be fair, at the time I only had, like, 4 ponies, so they were all special and I couldn't just bait her like everyone told me, lol.
Probably my biggest newbie "mistake" was thinking I could actually win any of those big G1 lots on ebay, and getting sincerely upset when each one went out of my $60-tops price range :P

I customize more than collect, so I'm always looking for the cheapest ponies I can get so I haven't made any mistakes like paying too much for a common pony... But I'm afraid that one day I'm going to somehow get a rare pony and not realize it, and then chop its hair off and customize it and stuff... hah!

Bought a bag of G3s at a thrift store for $10, there was some weird looking pony in there I didn't recognize. Asked the Arena what kind of fakie she was.

She was Diamond Dreams.

As a newbie, I thought I had wanted an "only mint" collection, so I looked for ponies on eBay that had been spruced up, some of their hair even had conditioned curls (yuck!). None of them had any marks whatsoever, but it took me forever to get one pony because of the quality and price!
Now I am OK with great to mint ponies. Not just mint. And I am not spending like $15 per pony, anymore!!

My first pony was baby Cherries Jubilee for $30. She's perfect except for a small haircut. I am still not sure if this is overpriced, though. >.<

Not so much a mistake, more a regret. I saw a lot of three G1's on eBay for $15 bin, and thought it was too much. It sold, so I looked up the ponies prices, and realized that the Diamond Dreams in that lot was worth a whole lot more :faint:

I don't think I have made any huge mistakes. I have knowingly overpaid for a few ponies because I've been impatient etc, but then again I've gotten some bargains as well. I paid less than $15 for each of my wingers, for example.

I thought that I had to complete all sets to be happy. Now I regret it a little, because I wouldn't sell any pony that I do have, but there are a few that I bought purely as set completers and now I am so short on pony space - again!

Many years ago now I found my chlldhood Forget Me Not flutter pony, her wings had long broken off but I always really hated the way her wing holders just stuck out so I hacked them off!  I didn't realise at the time you could get replacement wings : (  I got her out of storage a few weeks ago and promptly put a lovely lilac ribbon round her middle to hide the scars x

When I first got internet access I went on an eBay shopping spree and bought several common ponies as over overpriced BINs   It doesn't bother me too much now though as they were ones I had always wanted as a child but never gotten and they were in excellent condition.

Title: Re: What Was Your "Newbie" Mistake/Assumption?
Post by: Marlin on March 04, 2012, 01:20:13 PM
When I started, I KNOW I paid way too much for some ponies. And even more recently, I placed a little too much trust in sellers... a few months back I bought a bunch of ponies from a private seller... out of slight desperation for a set completer and the fact that I was getting grumpy over not being able to find a Sugarberry without awful hair, I paid NZ$20 for one she described as mint - she couldn't flaw her, and the photo appeared to show all was well. When she arrived, she had pindot all down her legs...  (she looks gorgeous now though, all fixed up...)
I also bought from the same seller a Quackers, also described as mint. She has brown mould spots all over her.

My dumbest mistake though, I think, was starting to deflock two childhood ponies whose flocking was awful. Shady went into the water first.... uh huh... you can see where this is going, right!?   I thought to save on time I'd shove North Star in there too. Well... that lovely chartreuse did its work, and North Star's hair.... oh dear. I had no idea at the time that the chartreuse would leach. I subsequently lost interest in de-flocking them and on-sold them as bait

My accidental G3 Fizzy Pop army...

Everytime I go to a meet or go on a pony shopping spree I go "OMG SHE'S GORGEOUS I MUST HAVE HER!" and buy her.
Only to get home and find the other Fizzy Pops that got bought the same way XD Darn that pretty pony!

When I first joined the Arena, I started trading to build my feedback. Besides making a few stupid trades (I do believe some older members pulled the wool over my eyes with some sea ponies), I traded with a since-banned member who was a nightmare. She later tried to do the same thing over at the TP.

In short, I have a very sad Peachy and flutter pony who need some love (who were supposed to be mint, including wings for the flutter).

Now, I watch my trades and traders. Lesson learned.

i regret some of my sales i made when i first started clearing out my old collection, thankfully coming on here and asking about my massive childhood lot saved me from putting them all on ebay in one huge group and losing god-knows how much money, but i'm sure some people definitely got some good deals from me parting with rarer ponies before i really knew anything about them! there's a few i definitely wish i'd put on ebay now i see what they go for! haha

My mistake?  Almost letting go and not buying a Macau Blosscoth at the flea market because: "But she is not a 'normal pony'!! Her colors are way different... is she a fakie?"

But bought her in the end XD  And years later... found out what a nirvana pony was o.O

I don't think I've made mistakes while buying ponies...  I believe...

But I've made other mistakes... that's why I now prefer to sell and post a lot of pictures and sellers ask questions about ponies...

I got a Heart-Throb with a very short mane, I figured that I could reroot her with a nice long one... I didn't know how to take the hair out of the head properly, and I didn't know how to fix the rip that I got in the head as a result, so I just left it and rooted around the hole... Now Heart-Throb has a mane, but a big bald spot. :( But she's my first G1, as well as my first REAL MLP, so I can't get rid of her.

The only thing I've done so far is with a custom FBR that I rehaired before I sealed. But then I've only done 4 customs so far, so lesson learned. Plus it wasn't really that big of a deal cause the custom was for hubby and he doesn't mind that the hair is a little crispy at the edges of the mane and tail....

I got a Diamond Dreams in a lot on eBay. Since I didn't want her for my own collection, I decided to sell her on the Arena. Since I didn't know her value, I set the price at $2.00. She was a bit dirty and needed touch-ups on the paint, so I thought that was a decent deal. I had 5 messages in my inbox the next day--all requesting Diamond Dreams.

*facepalm* Lol.

My newbie mistake was to pay £21 on evilbay UK for a frizzy haired ,crinkled tinsel ,  slightly tipsy Princess Dawn  I thought  that since she wasnt sold here in the UK (and I hadnt bought internationally before, or even joined the pony community online at the time) she must be rare LOL  :yikes:  and besides she is in my fave pose. Oh well. I still have her, improved the hair, straightened the tinsel.. and I still like her even though I have better ones now :relaxed:

I paid... $30 for Masquerade.  She DID come with her original ribbon, comb and clipping from her back card. But I neglected to notice she came from another country when I BIN'd.  She's a lovely pony and she's staring me in the eye right now, so I don't regret it.  But... I just felt silly! I overpaid on white haired Lickety Split and Posey because I read somewhere that the third year ponies weren't as popular and I somehow translated that into them being somewhat HTF.

More recently, a few years ago I made a gamble on a dirty lot of g1s from shopgoodwill, thinking that I saw a hidden Mimic in the fuzzy pictures.  I won the lot, paid the enormous shipping costs and got the lot of grungy g1s - and not a Mimic in sight.  Sigh.   There wasn't one pony in there I wanted.

I think mine takes the newbie cake.

Along with the G3s, my sister's herd contained a mom and two baby ponies. They came with this little yellow plastic barn thing, and they certainly didn't match with the others. Our whole house was convinced that these were original MLPs and that they were something special.
When I was helping my sister id her ponies, the funky barn came out of storage. Still under the impression she had originals, I looked them up. They're Tara Toy fakies! My mom, sister, and I were so suprised! Never saw it coming!

For this reason you should always know who you're baiting before you do it. There are ID sites out there for G1 and G3, and if that fails, you can always show us a photo and we will tell you what you've got! Please be cautious if you're not sure. =)

I'm sure I probably overpaid a bit for a pony or two when I first started ebaying. =P Nothing extreme as far as I remember, which is definitely a good thing.

I've had a few newb mistakes that others here have mentioned.  I traded a G1 year 3 sea pony to someone (on another pony site) for a $8-10 pony, before I knew what they were worth.  I also customised a couple of ponies that could have been saved, but they were doubles for me (they were super common at least).  This was before I knew about the online community, and G1s were way more common in general.

The one that stands out for me, though, was thinking that 'good' condition meant 'in good shape', when in fact it's closer to the bottom of the scale.  I paid close to $20, including shipping, for Moondancer and Medley on ebay in the early 2000s, because they were both part of one of my favourite childhood stories.  What I got was 2 ponies in baity condition.  Medley's ear was chewed, Moondancer was pretty yellowed, and both of their symbols were almost completely gone.  It was really disappointing.  I was too much of a newb to even take it up with the seller.

Dr. Mowinkle, I dream about a find like that!!  I want Diamond Dreams so badly!

Didn't think this through when I did it, but a fair amount of my ponies have sharpie on the bottom of their hooves. It has their year and an ID number. I did this originally so I wouldn't forget who I had. Now I feel So stupid because it has started bleeding out a bit and blurring on them. ACK! So many of my poor girls are scarred by sharpie! Luckily it hasn't spread to where you can see it when they're on display.  >_<

As a new collector, I was tricked by "senior" collectors and sold many ponies I came across from flea markets. I did'nt get near their worth, when I found out I was so angry about people I trusted tricking me into selling them my rare ponies I almost gave up collecting :'(

I sold a mint condition Baby candy and two of the princess Dragons for $1 each to a collector who swore they was'nt worth baiting. And another collection graded my Sunburst to $8 and told me she was going to sell it for me, she kept the price difference by herself.
So much for honesty. I'm sometimes kicking myself for beeing so stupid. But mostly I just sit back and let karma have it's way with them XP It's just money in the end, My ponies mean more to me than that.

Ooooh....thats....very similar story to me on another one I just remembered [I think I try not and think of this one as it makes me cry lol]. When I started collecting I decided I didnt want accessories [yes, you may all faint in shock at that statement lol]. But I sold on here a couple of sweetie baby pony barrettes for $20 each - when I noticed someone had posted looking for them and I had no clue as to what they were worth...when I decided I needed to buy them back from another seller - times that number by 5 and add some more!! *Cry*

I guess I would say that I overpaid for my first few ponies.  I really wanted to get my hands on NSS Wind Whistler as she was my grail at the time.  I think I paid like... $25 for her.  I feel she was totally worth it for me, but now I know better.  I just got her for less than $10 with shipping last week.  Also way overpaid on Medley and Firefly...

*Cry*

2 very sad stories :(

Baby Cotton candy was going for $50 on ebay when I got her in a large lot for like $2. Prices change dramatically.

My mistake was customizing a Brilliant Blossom with darker blue body and chartruse hair because I wanted to keep the one I had that looked like the normal version because I thought it was good to have the one that looked like she was supposed to look. I regret it to this day. Unfortunately the custom was a present, but if I ever got her back I could probably restore her somewhat because I just painted over her and dyed her hair. I bet I could wash the paint off and sunfade the dye out of the hair. How do I ask someone to return their christmas present I gave them several years ago though?

I guess my mistake was underestimating the value of the Mountain Boys - I picked up a pretty much mint condition Lightning from a car boot for £1 and assumed he was only worth £5-10 :P

I also have a habit of overestimating certain G3s, though I've never really overpaid for them. Yet.

I'm not too devastated about those ponies anymore. The only thing i REALLY regret is being convinced to sell my childhood Newborn Baby Snoozy. I have been trying to find a replacement for years, but she does'nt come up for sale that often I'm afraid :'( I really lernt a valuable lesson there. I'm just happy It haven't kept me from collecting though. I do really love the ponies and this community! :)

Mine was that G2's were so different from G1's that I wouldn't want them. Wrong.

When I got my first G2 home I just loved her, and she's still my favourite even though I'm looking to get the rest of her set. xD

I almost left her behind, can you imagine? <3

I *still*make mistakes now with things like pricing :P When I was very new to collecting, I was going to try to 'fix' Princess Sparkle and cut her head off... now her head is barely attached and the crown still doesnt light up ^^;

When I was 5 I left a backpack full of G1s unsupervised in my cubby at daycare because, after all, everyone was my friend! Nobody would take them!

Yeah, I never saw that Little Mermaid backpack again.

I thought all G3's with tinsel in their hair were super rare, so I hoarded them for months before a friend clued me in. *blush*

I thought there must be a whole set of Dinosaur Pony Friends out there.  This was before finding Kimberly's Dream Valley site, back in ye olde days of geocities and webrings.  *chuckle*

Haven't made any too serious mistakes, I think... But I do regret selling me and my sister's childhood G2s for so cheap, they were all complete with accessories and in a nice condition. I didn't like G2s so I decided to get rid of them, and I thought no-one else would be excited about them either so I didn't ask much for them. :( Well, at least they ended up finding a loving home. (And before you ask, yes I did have my sister's permission for selling her ponies, and I gave the money to her. ;) )

Most of my newbie mistakes are custom related, like not removing the original symbols so you could still see them under the white paint... lol. Well, I admit I could've added a couple more layers of paint, I was pretty impatient with my first custom(s). :D

Oh wow, had to think back - I think mine was that BB's were worth the same as a regular adult in a trade - I think I traded 3 BB's two with hats for a Surprise, Powder and Baby Moondancer.
