Title: Do You Tell People About Your MLP Collecting Or Do You Hide It?
Post by: Majesty on March 03, 2012, 02:53:59 PM: Hello fellow pony collectors.

OK so I was wondering if you proudly admit to people you collect My Little Pony or you avoid it, because you're embarrassed (which you shouldn't be)?

I used to be embarrassed when I was a teenager and when I was a younger adult. Now, I'm going to be 28 in less than a week and I proudly tell people, but only if the subject comes up. I bought a MLP purse at the RI fair last year and it has my fair pin and key chain on it. So, the fact that I love My Little Pony goes everywhere with me. Sometimes random strangers go up to me and talk about My Little Pony and how they used to collect them or they just simply say they like my purse. :) I also bought a "I Collect My Little Pony" hat at the fair last year which I like to wear mostly during the summer and on the warmer days of spring and on the weekends since I work at a preschool and would have no reason to wear it there. :P

It's still a little cool out, but when the weather is warmer I wear MLP t-shirts.

So, there's my answer. ;)

I mean, I don't go up to random people and say "HEY! I COLLECT MY LITTLE PONIES!", but whenever I have friends over I'll be like "hey wanna look at my ponies? ^^" and stuff. x3

I have one pony shirt, and I wear it mostly when it's warmer. I plan on getting some more T-shirts, a button for my school lanyard, and some other stuff. I love ponies and I'm not afraid to show it :)

I also have a MLP purse and keychain. And my workstation is covered with MLPs. I have two G1 babies on my computer tower. My workmates have even defended my ponies when little kids see them and make grabby hands. "Oh no! You don't want to touch those ponies, she will kill you!" (My workmates have even played with the hair and such before.) :lol:

I used to be hush, hush about them when I was younger, but I think as we get a little older we become more secure in who we are and stop worrying so much about being judged. ;)

I have brought a couple of my ponies to school before to show a few of my friends. I also wear some of the My Little Pony necklaces I have made to school before so it is a bit obvious. Nobody is really mean or bothers me about it. One of my teachers thinks it is nice, but she really doesn't get it and thinks that my ponies are my "imaginary friends". XD

I won't start a conversation about it, but if the conversation gets steered toward hobbies or collections or anything related to ponies or cartoons, I'll mention it. Most people don't say much about it. I don't think I've ever gotten a negative reaction from it. Mostly just "Cool" or "That's interesting", stuff like that. Some of my friends think it's very "me" to collect ponies, which I think is pretty cool. ;)

Post by: Elfpony on March 03, 2012, 03:45:41 PM: I do tell people, but I think my friends tell more people than I do. Often when I meet friends of friends the first thing they say is "Oh, you're the pony person!" It's pretty entertaining.

I also wear pony jewelry and shirts, often to work. I have some McD ponies at my desk, so all my coworkers know about my collection. And when Roomy and I have our yearly xmas party I set up an xmas Pony display in the Pony room and everyone has come to expect it and look forward to seeing it.

Sometimes when I'm buying ponies, though, and the cashier says something like, "some little girl will be happy" I'll just answer "yes she will!" Sometimes I just don't want to be bothered getting into the conversation.

I even did an interview with my sister in the local papers, about our love for pony's. I've never felt ashamed. I'm not walking around telling people, but when i was in a clinic (for many reasons) I'd take my pony DVDs to watch and could not care less. In general i am an insecure person but when it comes to ponies, i don't care people's opinions. So far everyone reacts positive to it :) No one cares about ponies, but respect my love for them.

I got a lot of teasing about it from friends when I was in college but it didn't bother me too much. My dorm room was covered in ponies. One of my friends asked me how was I able to sleep at night with all those little eyes staring down at me. XD

And sometimes people who know me have picked up ponies they've seen at thrift stores, yard sales, or when cleaning out part of their house and given them to me. One of my college friends even bought me a G2 pony when they were in stores. I keep hoping someone I know will stumble across a Baby Sugarberry lol.

It's paid off for me because at work people bring me ponies all the time and one of my firneds broguht over a bag of G1's with a beautiful TAF Tum Yum also I have aquired Bright eyes, Flat foot ponies etc.

Also MLP seems to becomming cool at my work, my firned kept going up to mu pony plush on my locker and petting it, so I ended up buying her one. She loves it. :)

However, I don't have any pony stuff at work. I'd love to but I know I have students who will take things off my desk.

All of my G1s were in storage at my dads house while I had a few McDonalds and such out with me. We went through several moves, one across the country, the last few years. The G1s just now got unpacked and I started cleaning them up. They have been played with A LOT. The reason my G1 collection is so big is because they are literally my childhood toys. I have had Butterscotch since I was 5. Anyhow, I am not embarrassed but I am not a raving collector either. I did announce to my FB the other day that I collect them. I was excited about my G4 Applejacks. :biggrin:

Post by: CrystalCrown on March 03, 2012, 05:14:16 PM: most people i know i tell them about it. because it would be weird if i kept it a secret all that time then one of my friends comes to my house and opens up my bedroom door, then sees nearly 200 ponies just there :P actually everyone that knows of my collection is comletely fine with it (except my family of course. theyre all against it except my dad). although some of my friends had a few different reactions.

like one of my really good friends that i've known and trusted for a while, when i first told him he was all like "omg r u freaking kidding me right now", but another friend who i'm not as close to and havent know for all that long (and he's emo/goth, so just looking at him you can CLEARLY tell hes not into anything remotely close to ponies), once he found out i had a customized Children of Bodom pony he almost had a heart attack and wanted to see it so badly XD

Post by: rybett on March 03, 2012, 05:17:05 PM: Technically, the collection is mostly Charlie's. Since the G3's come from thrift stores in bags, we get duplicates frequently. She lets me customize them. DH thinks it's weird, but he plays D&D. ;) Mostly that's what people are told.

I also generally have a pony of some form on hand, and I even had my class last year take on an extra "student" on thursdays, my big pink unicorn plushie floyd. My teacher even had him on the roll & he even passed an assignment with me :P lol.

Here he is in class last year - so yep, im out there about it lol

I do get a little embarassed around my posh side of my family, I find it a little awkward, but they said they are happy to help me find ponies. My friends think it is funny and cute but they think I spend waaaay to much money on ponies !! LOL. xxx

All my friends and family know, they even buy ponies for me for birthdays etc. If anyone stays over they sleep in the pony room!

I have a great network of people who accept me for me :)

Post by: GazeboMouse on March 04, 2012, 02:28:29 AM: I have several larger collections that people hear about first, once they hear I collect armadillos, Black baby dolls, Indiana Jones merchandise, and Cabbage Patch kids, and love the 80s, they aren't so shocked when I let them know I have MLP as well. I do tell them about other collections like gemstones and fossils and other stuff too, so they know I am a collecting person. If they think I'm odd, so be it. I think it's weird when people collect make-up that either is used up or goes off within months, or loads of 'fashion victim' clothing that they can't wear for long. At least I have something to show for it after 10 or 20 years!

My and my friend both collect, we started the same time and offten go to toy stores and such. Every weekend we meet to customes or stalk ebay ^^
My family knows, my dad is really intreressded and ask mt lots of questions. He evan drown me 2 hours to get my bookcase for my ponys the other day :biggrin:

I wright about in my blogg and link to facebook so people that I arn't so close to probebly knows and I dont minde :)

I'm really shy otherwise and dont like telling people to much but when It comes to my hobbys and think I really feel for I can't help but talk about it :)

People are genuinely curious and like the displays that I put together. But I think my fiance is prouder of my toys then I am XD He always gives friends and family a tour of my garage before I even get the chance to offer!

Sadly I'm going to have to be more cautious with my toys. I'd happily leave people unattended in there before whilst I cooked dinner, and let them play with them if they wanted, but one of my ponies recently went missing :( I'm rather hurt that someone would do that, especially after I have been so trusting.

I have a strong idea who it was (my neighbours 4 year old daughter), but I'm not a confrontational person and I really don't know what to do.

I had a manager ask me if I could pull off a Mardi Gras theme last month and everyone jokes that we wouldn't know what time of year it is without the pony desk. The people I work with are really great about it, my family not so much. They all think its pretty weird, in particular my mom and sister, and are generally not supportive at all. My BF has been surprisingly cool about it all and often thrift store shops for me. His kids also love hunting, and his daughter thinks cleaning them is a blast!

But, I am a horse girl, ride horses, collect horse things, so if I explain it that way I think it helps for people who can't understand the whole "grown up collecting toys" thing.

I keep the 2011 G4 McDonald's figures on my desk at work, and this year I handed out My Little Pony valentines to everyone in my department. Ponies feature prominently in my house, so anyone who comes over gets a pretty good idea of what I do in my spare time. XD I'm definitely not ashamed of it!

I have coworkers who send me pictures of pony things and often ask me how my "rehabilitation" is coming along (restoring my old ones haha) and friends who pick them up for me when they see them! I have the calender up at my desk at work, I'd like to take some ponies but dunno who I'd take!

I tell everyone so that anyone I know who sees a pony will think of me. ^.^ Everyone at my work and around my work knows. One of our bank girls even had a bunch of G1s from her childhood she was going to put on display only to discover that her mom may have given them away! I felt so bad for her. :cloud:

If the topic comes up, yes I give that information out. I also have ponies plastered all over my work desk in one form or another. I'm considered the crazy pony lady at work. Kinda bugs me as I'm not crazy but * shrugs shoulders * If I'm not liked for who I am, or what I'm into then it's their loss.

Post by: Varkolak on March 05, 2012, 04:56:07 AM: i tell anyone who gives me an opening to lol. at toys r us i grabbed the blind bag box and ran to the register to ask if they had more in the back and the lady goes "oh do you have a birthday party you're doing?" i said "no i'm a collector" and she goes "oh..." and went silent. but the other lady at the other register when i went to check out, she said "all of them?" and i said "yes, and i want the box too please" and i kept going on about how i've been waiting for them for so long and that i had to have them all and i planned on opening them all XD and she said "well that's good, because that means we sold them" they surely couldn't of been there for too long!!

The cashier didn't even realize they still sold MLP at all. WHY DON'T YOU?!" :D If they subject comes up, I'll mention it, and usually pull out one of my business cards I made for my customs and hand it over to them. :) I do have pony shirts that I love to wear, and a MLP charm bracelet that I'm hardly ever without.

I never felt embarrassed about my collection. I don't go around telling every single person but I also don't wait till a pony/toy related subject comes up. Like if I'm excited for some reason about a new pony release, or about finding something for a swap partner, I'll mention it the same way I'd mention other things I'm happy about in conversation.

There's very few people that are ready to make fun of it, but I was always very assertive and always acted very naturally about the subject. If someone wants to make weird faces or unpleasant comments because I have a hobby they're clearly the ones with problems, not me.

But most people think it's a fun unusual thing to like and most of the time people get me ponies or let me know when they find new pony stuff, so it ends up being a positive thing to let others know.

People's hobbies are what make them interesting and I'm personally always really curious about other people's more exotic hobbies so I'm pretty sure there are others who'd love to hear about mine. I collect other toys and figures as well so I usually just say I'm a toy collector in conversation and if someone wants to know more, I'll tell in greater detail and that's when ponies come up as well.

Um, I tend not to be too vocal about it... I even get funny looks from my friends who LIKE mlp, because I know all the names, and the generations, and because I have a table full of every single G4 release that's been in my area. :(

When I finally scored on a full box of blind bags and went to the register with my 10 desired bags in hand, the sweet old lady at the register asked me if they were for easter baskets, and when I said no, I'm a collector, she looked at me like I was some kind of freak... I hastily ammended that I thought it was an excellent idea for easter baskets and that I would get more for that purpose.

Oh, and they ALL think I'm a psycho for ripping off my extra Lily Blossom's head (for customizing).

I don't try to hide it but I don't see why cashiers etc would care why I'm buying ponies? If one asked I would probably say, but It's not happend yet.

Of course I speak to friends and family about it and my collection is on display in the front room so I wouldn't say I'm in the closet.

Actually I've been on the lookout for some neat pins or accessories to wear to discreetly show my pony-ness, but I haven't really come across much that appeals to me. Might just order my own buttons from one of those online places.
