Title: anyone like the shows as well as the toys?
Post by: Firehooves on March 02, 2012, 09:37:14 AM
Hey, the Big Brother pony here again (I refuse the title brony, as I am a G1 fan first, though I do love FiM). And I was wondering; among the non-brony fanbase, are there any that like the shows as much as the toys? My little pony & friends, MLP Tales, and even the G3 Specials.
And I do like the toys, I have Firefly, Bow Tie, and Majesty (though my cousins and my cat did horrible damage to her.  ) And did anyone else want toys released of the moochick, Tirek, Danny, Nightshade, and Katrina... but maybe that's just me.

I've honestly never watched any of the G1 shows, so I can't really say whether or not I like them. I have a feeling that I would, though, since I love nostalgic things. I just wonder where I should start...

I did like the G3.5 special that I saw. It was silly, but it was really adorable, too. ._.;;;

I love most of the shows :D I grew up with MLP Tales, Clover was always my favorite! I really wish they would've made the enemies into toys! Scorpan, and that evil guy... I forget his name or the weird bird characters in the golden horseshoes. The Witches!!!

I loved the G1 show!!  I know it's cheesy and poor animation, but as an 80's baby, I will always enjoy it!

I used to watch it after school and I have awesome memories of that show!  I fell in love with the characters then.

I f you want to start with G1, look for "Rescue at Midnight Castle/Firefly's adventure" It's on youtube, and was the start of the G1 series. It's also the best of the G1 series. After that, look for, 'escape from Katrina' next, and then 'my little pony: the movie' and then 'the end of flutter valley', all also on youtube. After that, they can kind of be watched in any order.
The birds in the golden horseshoes were the Screea, they had a culture built entirely around gaming and gambling. The evil guy in Midnight castle was the horned centaur tirek.

Yeah, I came here orginally to make some good friends with fans of the older shows back in december. My results have been... less than stellar :/

As a kid I used to watch the G1 show religiously, as I had almost every My Little Pony and Friends on video.
Funnily enough now that you mention it, I loved the baddies! I always wished that there had been toys released of Katrina and Grogar :D

Oh I love the ok shows. I probably still watch The Movie at least once a month. I was also able to get some of the other shows on DVD. Now I am trying to track down MLP Tales that I can watch that is not online. Oh nostalgia. :)

I really liked the G1 shows, since I grew up on them :D I have them all on DVD ^^ I dunno, did they do G2 shows? I was okay with the G3 shows, they were cute...a little to sweetsy for me. I LOVED Minty's special though. And of course, I LOVE FiM. :) Though, I must admit my severe dissatisfaction with the changes they made to the Last Roundup ._. I thought it was cute as it was, and if they were going to change it, they should at least make both versions readily available for everyone..BUT that's aside. I love all the shows, to answer the question. :) (Well, except for the G3.5 I never saw those.)

I absolutely love the older series. :) I grew up watching three of the G1 episodes on video, & always wanted to see more. Then I discovered them all on youtube a few years ago. :3
As an animator in training, the quality of the series should bother me, but I just can't bring myself to dislike it. I love the sense of wonder & adventure the G1 show had, & all the different personalities. Watching it always takes me back to childhood, when everything seemed so magical.  :lovey:
My favourite episodes are Rescue at Midnight Castle & Quest for the Golden Horseshoes. Mish Mash Melee's cute too. Surprise & Paradise are my fave characters. ^-^
I also think Tales is great, & I like the G3 episodes, although the storylines leave much to be desired.
I really enjoy FiM, but it doesn't have the same appeal to me as the old series. I think that's partly down to the art style, which I'm iffy about, & the way the ponies behave more like humans. I'll almost always take adventure over slice of life.
Title: Re: anyone like the shows as well as the toys?
Post by: Firehooves on March 02, 2012, 10:08:50 AM
Yeah, back when the villans were more than a disgruntled alicorn who wanted to turn the lights off, and an anthroporphized version of Q from star trek. XD (Again, no offense to FiM,  they do slice of life better.) And the art style- ugh! I wish theyhad gotten Toei to do the 'midnight castle' artstyle, rather then that horrendus flash animation. and I will say FiM has better character development.

I also wish the old shows would air on the hub, as hasbro now owns the rights to all the old sunbow shows (which means they got the rights back to the G1 ponies and villians, as well!)

I LOVE the show! I always loved the g1 cartoons (then again, I was 5) the g4 one is appealing to everyone :) The non-brony fanbase of the show is actually bigger than the brony fanbase anyway XD ! (young children dont go on forums so much)

Ahaha, I used to have the movies on VHS and I would watch them religiously every day. I've never really seen any of the television shows though besides FiM, but it's great too!

I love the shows :D (except for G3.5).

Unfortunately, I've only seen Rescue at Midnight Castle (plan on watching more though :D ) and Come Back, Lily Lightly, as far as the older specials I like goes, but I have seen every episode of FiM though. xD

Then again, I suppose I can't really hate on G3.5 shows either, I saw a Flash "Newborn Cuties" thing from G3.5 and I really, really didn't like it ><

I'd love a moochick toy! I always loved how they went to him for guidance :) *ah, the good old days <3 Tirek would have made a cool toy too!

My favorite episodes are "A little piece of magic." and "Sweetstuffs treasure hunt." They're so sweet! <3

I loved the G1 show, but I never could get into it as much as I really wanted to because I didn't like Megan, and she seems to be in most episodes :(

I love Pony Tales and G4 though. I also enjoy G3, though I'm a little iffy on G3.5.

I think the cartoons were a great marketing tool. Why not advertise product throughout? Oh Hasrro, you are so clever!
There's a reason I made this custom:

Knight Shade is adorable.

I'd personally like some smooze to play with!

I wasn't a big fan of the shows (G1) as a kid. I remember watching it but being a bit upset afterwards because it didn't match up with my own storyline. I had ponies before the show came out so it didn't make sense to me. I mean.... why wouldn't Starshine be the queen?? Who does Majesty think she is???? lol

I'm not a fan of the new show either. I guess I really don't get the "look" of G4.

I love the G1 cartoons, think g3 is cute and fun to watch and even like g3.5 episodes that I've seen despite that I really don't like the 3.5 toys! They're easy to watch and I think I just enjoy the bright colours. Oh, and I love Toola Roola...

It really irks me that all the YouTube videos are badly rated and spammed with negative comments from bronies, I wish they'd just leave me alone to enjoy my cute cartoons in peace. :(

I love all the shows and movies, with the exception of Newborn Cuties.  Can't get into that poorly animated flash.

The first animated pony movie that I watched was "A Charming Birthday."  Even now, I can appreciate that the ponies live in an innocent, peaceful world where the only thing to worry about is what to do about a friend's birthday present.

The best art, though, belongs to Friendship is Magic and "Escape from Midnight Castle."

Long time fan of Gen 1 cartoons and toys alike. I also like the Gen 3 toys while I wasn't too crazy about the cartoon but I won't deny that it has a good animation but it didn't have villains in it and there's not much action going on like in G1. I do like A Very Minty Christmas special and I ended up liking Minty. I semi like FIM and their toys but G1 will always be my number one favorite MLP generation. :)

I do wish that they make the villain toys like Tirac, that would have been awesome! XD

I love the old G1 show. I used to watch MLP the movie all the time as a kid and i still consider this my favorite show. I also like the G3 related movies and animated shorts. Yeah, they were very cutesy but i think they were fun in their own way.

The G3.5 movie, Twinkle Wish Adventure (?) i didn't care for though. Mostly because it bored me more than any other movie. But i think it also had something to do with the fact i could watch the G3 movies in English and i was stuck watching the G3.5 one in Dutch. Ooh the voice acting.
The only series i dislike is MLP tales. Just because every element of magic was gone and because the ponies became too human.

The way I logve ponies really do equals the way I love the series XD

I love the G1 series, as everyone else seems to have I watched them as a kid ^^ I also love the G1 ponie sbut I don't collect them since they take too much space.

G2s never had a show, nut I love the toys :D

G3, I were "too old" for ponies when the show aired and so I never watched it and don't really have any interest in it. The same goes for the toys, the G3s aren't my thing

G4, Just two years after my once again newly discovered love of ponies a new show aired. I totally rejected to see it, but well, in the end I gave it a shot. And I really like it. Sure the naimation style is that kind of "modern" that I'm not too much of a fan of (and they do look like cats) but it's very charming and a great series. The same goes for the toys. They are really cute and charming and the perfect size to collect in my small apartment

When it comes to G3, yes, I like the cartoons as much as the toys, mostly because of how the G3s are drawn. FiM is still kinda show-only, despite my spike in interest over the Nightmare Moon toy and excitement over the white Princess Celestia toy.
Title: Re: anyone like the shows as well as the toys?

Ohhh, awesome nightshade custom! I would definitely buy one if Hasbro would release it! There are characters that were released as toys, but were made cool by the show-like wind whistler. I normally liked the adventure ones, but I did like a few of the slice of life eps- Sweet Stuff and the treasure hunt comes to mind. My favorite toon Ponies were Twilight G1 and Wind Whistler.

Yeah, I agree with all of you. G 3 is okay, and I wish it, tales, and G1 weren't so flamed on Youtube. The G1 villains are cool, and I wish the new show had more villains like Tirek or Levan King of the lava demons! That's why I write G1/G4 fanfics, because I like having actual villains.

So what is everybodys favorite episode, and everybody's favorite pony on the show? And thier favorite ep?
Title: Re: anyone like the shows as well as the toys?

Favorite ep:
MLPT: Battle of the Bands
FiM: S1E2.
G3: none. Not enough action in any of them but some of their music is good.

Favorite pony:
MLPT: None of them really relate to me.
FiM: Nightmare Moon
G3: Star Swirl

I have G1 show on dvd... my husband bought it for my birthday.  I didn't get to watch it as a kid, but I love it.  It's sort of cheesy, but loveable, and honestly a lot more adventure than the newer shows.  I like FiM as well, but I think it is so well done.  I'd probably love it more if it was adventerous like the old 80s cartoons... not much like that anymore.

Honestly, I grew up with G1, and I had mixed feelings about it. I felt it too scary, tho I had a crush on Megan.

Tales was when I started to go serious with the show. It was my "Arthur surrogate" and I loved it. Tho I originally didn't think of the 7 too much, I eventually decided that I liked Sweetheart.

I missed out on G3 due to preoccupation of interest with the 2003 Strawberry Shortcake, but I did get a few G3 Pinkie Pies through it's run.

G4, well, I love the toys unconditionally, though I have mixed feelings about the show- on one hand, I love the VAs. On the other hand, I don't like the Adventure stories with villains.

I'm not familiar with the G1 shows, but I like the colour palettes and use of music in the G3 cartoons. The G3 cartoons are however very lite on everything else.

And Friendship is Magic is oodles of fun.

G1 - love so so soooo much (I'm a children's cartoon / animation junkie in general)

As kids we'd literally sit and watch them for hours. For years I'd only seen half of 'The Glass Princess' - do you know how much of a cliff hanger that had been, for... 12 years? XD I actually managed to find it on a VHS tape, but did anyone else notice how terrible it was in comparison to the first half? It was a really weird mish-mash. The voice actors seemed to have changed o_O I thought that WHSmith had dubbed it themselves, haha.

Now as an adult I like to watch them to see how many continuiting errors I can spot. I love it when Megan is with one pony and then the pony randomly turns into Sundance, who hasn't been in the episode at all. Good times!

Post by: Lancer on March 03, 2012, 04:47:35 AM
The shows have always been as important to me as the toys, although I know I'm in the minority.  I saw the G1 cartoon for the first time when I was just under three years old (six months after I got my first pony) and most of my childhood pony games were based around the TV show.  Being born late in the G1 run, I didn't have any of the TV star ponies at that time, but the ponies I did have would "act" as various MLPs from the series.  When I came to write my own fanfiction "radioplay-style" series (for a series of cassettes) all the personalities were the same as in the shows.  I just created personalities for the ponies who'd never got a part on TV!

I do cringe a bit at the quality of MLP & Friends now (animation errors where a leg will suddenly freeze, really bad singing on some songs etc.), but I still love it for what it is and it brings back a lot of memories for me.  Truly and Lofty are my favourites, with Sweet Stuff and Galaxy just behind.

Tales will always be "my" pony show.  I have watched it so many times over the years that I know the scripts off by heart and can quote back any scene! (Not sure if I should be proud or ashamed of that one! :P )  I love the art, especially the backgrounds (some of the detail is just amazing for a low budget cartoon of that time), the songs and I ADORE the voice acting.  Most of the shows had great morals too.  Roll Around The Clock is probably my favourite episode.  Lancer is my favourite (obviously), with Sweetheart a close second.  Then again, I love Melody and Starlight and...well, all of them really!

G3 - kill me if you like, but I LOVED G3 too.  I was 12 by the time A Charming Birthday hit the shops, but I loved it for what it was, a young children's TV show.  A Very Minty Christmas is probably my favourite, but I do like most of them.  I liked the animation, the simple little stories, the songs and most of all, the voice acting!  Pinkie Pie and Minty are my favourite ponies.  The Core Seven webisodes were a little boring, but I even liked those.

G3.5 - Love Twinkle Wish Adventure!  Again, mainly for the voice acting.  The animation was not really my cup of tea.  Didn't hate it, just didn't like the new look very much.  The characters and their catchphrases are a bit grating and repetitive ("How dashing!" and "Cool beans!"), but I do love the songs, especially "Dreams Do Come True" and "The Wonderful Winter Song".  There's not much to recommend Sweetie Belle's Gumball House Surprise and Pinkie Pie's Ferris Wheel Adventure but I do watch them occasionally just because some of my favourite voice actors are in them.

DON'T talk to me about Newborn Cuties though.  What the heck were those things?  The dreadful flash animation, the badly directed bored-sounding kid voice actors (one of whom just happened to be related to the casting director)...it killed me to see what MLP had become and I refused to buy any G3.5s after that even though I quite liked some of the toys!

G4 - Well, while I can't say I'm keen on the art style and I hate the way it's got this constant feel of "trying to please the adult audience" (it's lost some of the simplicity of MLP for me), I appreciate it has good writing and stars some of my favourite voice actors so I watch it anyway.  Rarity is my favourite pony, but I haven't got a favourite episode.

So, long post, but yes, there definitely ARE a few people on here who like the shows as much as the toys.  You just have to search for them! :)

Funnily enough, I think they actually only put half of "The Glass Princess" on one official VHS tape!  I'd already seen the show on Sky One by the time I got that tape, so I wasn't bothered, but I did wonder how other kids must have felt to get a "To Be Continued..." screen and then to have it cut into a different episode!

As for the quality issue, they cut the song out of the 4th part after it's first airing on US television for unknown reasons (probably timing), then they slowed down the remainder of the episode to get it to fit the time slot!  So that's why all the voices sound strange! ;)

I do! I've never seen any G1 or G2 movies or animations, due to the fact that I'm still quite young and the movies have never really been on TV when I was little. But I absolutely loved the G3 movies and they always bring back so many good memories when I re-watch them now a days!

To be honest, I'm not to keen on the Friendship is Magic series, I guess it's because of the fanbase. But I still watch it.

That makes so much sense, thank you! I had the first half on an official VHS tape, and years later I found it at a carboot, made by WHSmith apparently. I wondered why they sounded so strange. Now this mystery is solved, I feel... Complete :D

I actually always liked the toys but never really cared for any of the shows until FIM. I am rather picky about what I watch but I would probably like FIM even if it wasn't about ponies. However I would never bash the old shows on Youtube. I know that even if something isn't my cup of tea doesn't mean there aren't people that do enjoy it.

Yep.  I used to watch the TV series as a kid.  I remember watching MLP The Movie on TV and later MLP Tales and also MLP and Friends.  I watch FIM sometimes, because it reminds me of the early days when MLP was on TV.  I have two G4's, fashion style Rarity who I bought at the hasbro toy shop at the end of the MLP Fair in RI last year and Pinkie Pie who I got randomly as a goodie bag from hasbro or the fair staff, not sure who provided those.

I don't think I watched MLP and Friends as a kid though I was definitely the target age range (I was a big Jem fan.)  I love 80's cartoons for the nostalgia factor alone, though and I d enjoy the tv show - Sonambula and the movie are some of my favorites.  I love the characters, especially Wind Whistler and Shady.  :)

I have never been able to get into MLP tales.  I've tried to watch a few episodes but, for whatever reason, they just don't hold my interest.

The g3 cartoons are okay and I like to watch A Very Minty Christmas every December.  I don't enjoy them as much as the g1 cartoons but that could be just because there's no nostalgia there for me.  I did miss the inclusion of real villains in the g3 cartoons though (and I missed there being boys and adults.)

I do enjoy the g4/FiM cartoons a little more than the toys, I think.  I like the story lines; I think the cartoons are well-written and there's good character development.  I have no opinion on the animation being used.

I love the original cartoon. I like the ponies, and I like Megan. (Hell, my favourite pony overall is a G1: Rosedust) I love Friendship is Magic too. I haven't properly watched the other stuff (nor do I have any of the toys), but Tales looks fun and G3 seems okay if super-sappy. G3.5 looks... off, visually. Something about the overall aesthetic bugs me, part of it's how they look more like the ants from A Bug's Life to me (so I wouldn't want the toys either). Storywise it also doesn't sound like much.

I love Rescue at Midnight Castle.  I'm afraid that I didn't get to watch the series as much as a child because we didn't have the correct channel.  I caught an episode once or twice at my grandparent's house and I'm absolutly certain I would have loved it if I had had the oppurtunity to watch it more.  I bought almost all the dvd's of the episodes when they were released but I find some parts cringe worthy as an adult without the glow of nostalgia to soften it.

I'm not a huge fan of "Tales."  I actually like my ponies to be more horse like and less "human."

From the G3 releases, I do like Minty's Christmas mostly because around my family I am known as the Christmas child.

I do really like FiM but like you I will probably never consider myself a "brony."  I have been a collector for a great many years and I actually still consider all the G3 stuff "new."

It's good to hear from you all, and to know I'm not alone. Even though I'm surrounded by a sea of Bronys at my university, when most of them find out that I'm a fan of th 'old cartoons' and not just FiM, I get a lot of flak for it. (I won't even mention what the girls say. ><)

As I said when I signed up here- when I first saw the show, I loved Firefly and her tomboyish attitude, I loved Wind Whistler and her spock-like logic, I loved Gusty and her bravery, and North Star and her whole 'explorer' thing. At age nine, I always envied Danny for getting to go to an enchanted land with talking ponies and a cool pet dragon, and help fight monsters like Tirek and the Lava Demon king Levan. The show was amazing, but I couldn't get anybody else to see that.

I also liked the show, not just the toys~ In fact, as a child I watched My Little Pony: the Movie far more than I actually played with the toys. (I had two ponies.) For the most part I missed out on the original 80s television series; it was off the air before I was old enough to really watch television. I watched the G3 cartoons when I started collecting G3, and I enjoyed them even though they were pretty bad. ♥ I'll watch all of those now, too--although I've never actually seen the G2 cartoon. I think they're all pretty cute~
