Customs ruined my MIB Venny too. Well at least her head wasn't wrapped up in tape, she's not quite as mangled as poor SoSilver's. They ripped both sides opening her box and the cardboard insert that held her 'standing up' in there is missing. They threw her comb and ribbon in the packing box thankfully but her 'Starshine' label is gone. They gouged her leg and broke open her neck glue seal to search for contraband I guess. And she is so disheveled and knotted I think they played toss with her after. :(
This has me really sad. The same pony just sold on ebay for half of what I paid, and now any value of her being 'MIB' is gone. This is the first pony I've bought in the past year.
:cloud:
Well at least she is beautiful. *sad sigh*

I'm sorry it happend to you too :( I feared this was going to happen to more buyers after I heared sosilvers story.
edit to add - did customs do it or was venezuela police involved too?
-
NOOOOOOOO!!!!! :< super sad face. I dont think i'll be buying anything from there for a looong time... even if i had the money!
-
It was US customs this time. I'm Canadian though, so why US customs opened it I don't know.
-
I'm so sorry that happened :( I totally get your sad feelings, you paid for her and now stupid customs ruined her! :( Why did they open her pack?
-
Poor Starshine! :( I'm so sorry you had to go through this as well!
Did they leave any sort of notice on it as to why? Or are all Venezuelan ponies now secretly drug ponies to them? :|
-
Weird.. it sems so random. I expected it to be either ven. customs or ven. police. But I guess any country customs may open to check for drugs when the package is coming from south america. But people didn't have this problem when they bought loose ponies from mercado libre, did they. I wonder why the packages contaning mibs seem more suspicious to them.
I'm sorry they ruined your purchase (sort of). But at least the pony is safe and with you.
-
thats terrible im so sorry! Ive got a starshine on the way aswell, i really hope she doesnt get ruined :( x
-
maybe something in the plastic sets off the drug detector or something?

It has to be connected to what they're seeing the cartels doing. That's the only thing that makes any sense to me. They cartels probably send toys in their original packaging to make it look like they couldn't have been tampered with, even though they were. So now every toy in its original package gets a red flag.
I'm so sorry that this happened to you, too :( It's just so sad to hear about these beautiful, revered ponies being treated like this. It might be time to put a community warning out regarding Venezuela and what's been happening, at least until this new tactic stops being used so aggressively. I don't even think using a private courier service would help, because all packages moving out of the country are subject to inspection. If anyone is in the middle of a transaction and/or you've already paid, it might be a good idea to have the seller hold onto any MIB pony until we get more information about what is going on, and when it will be over.
I will try to find out why they're targeting the toys. If this is happening on a large scale, there must be some Venezuelan news articles about it or something.

You are probably right.
And I agree about the warning.
It's extra unfortunate that it's the pioneer buyers that have been hit with this. Paying for the items when prices were at their highest only to receive them opened and handled carelessly. >_<
-
Awh i am so sorry to hear that you have to go trough this like SoSilver :(
It is really stupid why the customs have to be so harsh with the pacakges. Maybe you can sort sonething out with the US customs because your pony dropt isn't as much worth as before the terrorist the packages.
A lot of hugs
-
That is just awful. I'm so sorry this happened to you, it's just not fair! Horrible. Starshine is such an absolute beauty! I'm so angry for you.
-
Oh No!! Not again!!
I'm so sorry for you!!!
I hope things will work out for you!!
*Hugs*
-
That sucks!! You must have been so heartbroken, opening that box =( She's still really cool though
-
 I'm so sorry this happened. Why can't they check without destroying?
-
This is so aggrivating and depressing all at the same time. I agree with whoever said it before - it's so sad for the pioneers who are paying top dollar for these ponies to have their precious items ripped apart carelessly. I also agree with the cartels reference - there's probably intelligence out there showing that they are smuggling something in toys...so here we are. Sigh. :( That sucks.
-
They gouged her leg
:cloud:
hold up .... they GOUGED her leg?!?!?!?! you mean like stabbed it?? tore the plastic???!!!
-
Thanks everyone for the condolences.
relcelestia - yea they did, it's small though. Probably happened when they were removing her head that was firmly glued on. They were rough.
-

hold up .... they GOUGED her leg?!?!?!?! you mean like stabbed it?? tore the plastic???!!!
Yeah that worried me too...could be they were testing to see if anything was inside the pony?
This is horrible Avea! So sorry this has happened to you.
Oddly I had been speaking to someone about this a few days ago - he mentioned that apparently in 2009/2010 shipping drugs inside toys was a particular trait of one particular organisation - I assume once the police cottoned on to it they stop and move on to another option but as they have seen it before no doubt its something customs are straight on to....why would your parcel be stopped in the US though shouldnt it have gone straight to Canada?
-

ooh noooo
thats even worse than sosilver!!! at least he found the head for god sakes!
so so sad for you :cloud:
just awful!!! any chance of help from the seller??
EDIT: ok i just read sosilvers brag... i didnt know they cut his CJ in the neck?! wtf?!
they cant get away with this!!!! how can they be held responsible?? for destroying property??!!
-
OMG that's horrible! I'm sorry that happen too
-
Did you purchase insurance at all? (With that said , it will be interesting to know if SoSilver had purchased insurance too).
If no insurance--- are you reporting the damage to canada post customer service? The item was opened, altered, damaged AND has missing contents. I think this is terrible, but if you could share any process of trying to recover from the damage, it might help people in the future.
-

This is what I was afraid the situation was. In this case, it's unlikely that the package destroying will stop soon. The most we can hope for is making a huge collective fuss so the customs people realize how upsetting this is.
Re: being opened in the US - if the package lands on U.S. soil for transit on its way to its eventual destination, the U.S. has jurisdiction over the package during that time and may therefore inspect it. I'm very worried that U.S. officials seem to have joined Venezuelan officials in deciding that destroying property is part of their job and somehow ok. This means that it's not just one country acting as an anomaly; it could be a new collective approach meant to target worldwide contraband distribution. If this is the case, we do need to raise a fuss and start making the customs agencies look bad. The fastest way to get a company or organization to change its behavior these days is to create a PR problem.
-
The "roundabout" way that some parcels get to some countries is very odd!
It is the destruction aspect I dont understand....you want to check it for drugs...fine, scan it, let a dog sniff it but there is no need to completely open it and then stick knives in it! Perhaps because the ponies are hollow and in theory reasonably easy to store something within is adding to the issues but anyway does not justify loss and deliberate damage....
-
This is absolutely unacceptable. You need to cause a MASSIVE stink about it. I'm sure they have x-ray machines that they can check with without resorting to opening the ponies. And I think the word needs to be spread that this is happening - everyone needs to start getting insurance for anythign vaguely rare, but obviously once the pony is damaged, it's done - and if it's really rare, no amount of money is going to create another one that doesn't exist. :(
I'm so sorry this happened to you. *hugs*
-
It really is terrible that this is happening and I really feel for both you and SoSilver. It's frustrating enough to have something get damaged in the mail, but when it's an extremely rare and valuable item and you know the damage was deliberately caused, regardless of what the reason may have been it is especially awful and extremely infuriating.
-
I can't believe US Customs did that.
I have had two Venezuelan Ponies shipped to me.
Tootsie MIB by Fedex
and
My Pink loose Blossom by regular post
neither one was opened or touched in any way.
Was the full value declared on the customs form by the Seller?
In My case both my ponies came with a value under $100.00 on the box perhaps the declared value
has something to do with it?
I was told by the seller of Pink Blossom the Venezuelan customs
had a habit of opening anything shipped by more expensive methods and that was the one to use.
I can understand the Italian Customs, they did that to a Pony I had shipped from there, pulled the head off, but at least it arrived with the head and I would hate to even think what German Customs would do to one.
Hopefully the United Kingdom Customs people don't do this.
-
Unfortunately only $50 was declared on the slip so even if I spent the time and international phone cost to pursue american customs (the tape said Homeland Security?) I would never get back what I spent...
-
Oh no!!! I'm so sorry!! :(
-

Then it was not because a high value was on the form, Homeland Security is not Customs. I wonder what is going on, they must have some sort of warning to be watching for. It's a shame the pony was caught up in it.
-
What the tape says exactly is "Opened for U.S. Customs and Border Protection" and beside that is the U.S. Dept of Homeland Security symbol. I don't know if that clarifies anything though...

And really scared now -_- ...
-
Oh that is just horrible...not obviously as something that affects me directly but as a collector its upsetting to see them destroyed :( You should get some sort of compensation..
-
UK customs touch-wood haven't done anything of this nature so far - being part of the EU, parcels from other EU countries don't really get checked.
They have however just started charging ridiculous fees now for packages arriving outside the EU. A seller put the amount that I'd paid for the mail order Mummy and Baby set on the outside of the box ($300) and I had to pay £40 import fees, plus an £8 'handling fee'. Made me feel sick!
-
I must have sent over 100 packages to the US and Canada from Spain (mostly Mediterranean sea glass) and it was only opened once by customs, so they're obviously less preoccupied with things coming from the EU.
-
This is so sad and i'm so sorry to hear this Avea : ( I am awaiting a pony too and I am very very nervous right now. x

Trust me this isnt a new thing unfortunately! UK customs import customs, clearance and admin fees are terrifying and have been for years! They are hot on everything over a declared value of about £20
Personally I think UK customs are more about making money now than actually stopping anything being imported!
-
Oh crap I'm so sorry they did that , that sucks :( 'gouged her leg' hopefully only on the inside?? xx

I agree, it's ridiculous. As if we're not ripped off enough in this country already.
So sorry to see this has happened to another pony, can you get any kind of compensation? Makes me so angry to see how customs can treat them so badly, it's like they assume there's drugs before they even check so they go out of their way to destroy it. >(
-
Oh no, not another one! And not even by the same agency either :( This is not boding well.

Yeah, it can be pretty harsh, especially if you're only *just* over the limit. Yet I've had things with a high declared value come through without customs fees, so they do sometimes slip through!
Just in case, I've already investigated what to do if there's a problem with the one coming to me, but only if it's UK Customs. If it's someone else I'd have no idea!

It was the first time I'd ever been charged customs on a package - I'm so sad to hear that others have been stung by such a silly money-making system. I've had higher priced goods come before with no fee to pay, but I know Royal Mail are being stricter at enforcing rules.
They're having a real crack-down on making sure packages are the correct size. Our postman (we have a daily collection) had to return 10 bags of post to someone because they were slightly larger than parcel size - he'd been sending them out that way for years, Royal Mail just decided now that it was wrong. That poor person then had to re-pack everything, and re-pay for Royal Mail to deliver. :(
Oh and postage rates are going up again. YAY. International post is going up by an average of 5% ;__; I feel sorry for people buying abroad.
-
This is just horrible and indeed very unneccesary! What happened to the Xray and dogs...
Mayby put a paper around the pony box with a warning on it that it is a collectors item and that every thing done to the pony devalue the pony? And then put it in a larger box zo they will she the paper when they openup the package?
-
I am so sorry this has happened to another person. I understand why its happening, but I don't understand why they have to be so rough that they ruin things. I don't think I will be spending money on a Nirvana to face it being ruined or devalued..what a huge loss. What has the world come to? Geez
-
I'm so terribly sorry about this awful happening, I just wish customs would sort themselves out, this is the second time a beautiful venezualan has been opened! :( xxx
-
I am so sorry this happened! *gulp*.....now i am really anxious for the one I ordered...I hope she makes it past these careless inspectors
-
Avea i am so sorry!
I know how you are feeling right now=(
i really don't understand why they have to rip apart a box that can be so easily open!
they are so arrogant and rude!
I am with you!
Hugs!

oh no i am really sorry to see this has happened again :(

I've written the seller. I know it's not their fault that customs is evil. However I don't understand why it wasn't insured. I spent $30 extra for shipping. It should have been insured and declared for full value. I can't even file for damages.
-
Oh Avea!
I forgot to add that i may have good news for you because also my Starshine doesn't have the name tag on the box:)
Hugs;)
-
Thank you SoSilver :) It was showing in the original pic though - loose in the box.

Your seller had no right to mark it lower than what you had purchased for (unless you asked to do this, which no one should be asking this anyway, because it is important information in case of ... something going awry).

If you paid for services, such as insurance you really need to press the seller. It is then their fault for not providing services that you paid for. :(
-
Great, now I'm gonna be wringing my hands 'till my Firefly shows up safe & sound. Unfortunatly since 9/11, homeland security has a little extra oomph to it. So sorry this is happening, & if my package shows up in anything less than perfect condition, there will be heck to pay.
-
Not again :( .
Unfortunately with all theses Ven ponies coming through the post I dont think this will be the last opened MIB :( . I have a feeling the glue that was used is causing some grief. I know when I worked at the airport our Customs Officers would get us to x-ray bags & the glue that holds most bags together shows up the same colour as drugs. Esentially they are made out of chemicals just like glue hence the colour. Its up to them to work out if its a real hit or not. Plus the fact that Venuzela is a known drug trafficking country does not bode well for MIB ponies arriving safely :(
-
That is so sad. I'm so sorry to hear that happened to you :-( its a shame the world we live in sometimes
-
I agree, it's ridiculous. As if we're not ripped off enough in this country already.
THIS! It makes me so mad that they charge a massive fee for packages opened, plus an £8 admin charge for every package they open!! DISGUSTING
It's even more disgusting what's happened to yours and SoSilvers pony though Avea, so sorry this happened to you both! xx

it is illegal to put a lower value on the customs form in order to avoid customs fees. it means you cannot claim back the true value if the packet got lost, because a false value was declared.
extra insurance is costly it is true :( but surely it is worth the peace of mind.

Was it shipped from Venezuela and then passed through the US into Canada..? Or was it shipped from the US to Canada..? Either way that's still awful that all these gorgeous MIB ponies are being forced to no longer be MIB because they can't simply use a drug dog or a scanner....
My question too? Was there anything indicating where it was originally from on the box (Venezuela)? Cause you think they would do this with most all ponies now, if that is the case.??? How would they know it was Venezuelan? Or perhaps it was a random check?
I haven't ever had any problems with shipping ponies out the U.S. in all my years of collecting, I have been very fortuante.
So sorry to hear about another pony being harmed

OK, I misunderstood. I thought they hadn't declared ANY value. Did the seller specify it would be insured? What exactly were those extra 30 dollars for? Sorry, I'm just a bit lost since Spanish post works a bit differently for international shipping :)

I was that wondering , too.
From where was it send original?
-
It was sent through FedEx from Venezuela. When he told me the cost for shipping was $30, I assumed it was for tracking and insurance. He did send me a tracking number and it arrived very quickly (within one week). I still haven't heard back from the seller. I wrote them here first, but I should have realized that now that they've sold their ponies they probably won't come here. So now I wrote to their email just the other day. I really hope to hear from them soon.

I have his contact on FB too if you need it^_^
Just let me know!

the shipping is different from country to countr you are right :) it is always worth looking into customs/insurance/shipping overseas when you sell internationally. import rules vary from country to country, i have learnt this through experience and through my job. i would not say i was an expert though!

I hope my pony from venezuela arrives safely =( i did email the seller asking him/her to wrap it up carefully and put "fragile" on the box because overseas shipments tend to get dinged up pretty badly.
-
I am speaking with the seller now, hopefully we can reach an amicable solution. :)
-
I hope so! good luck Avea!
-
I am so sorry to hear about your pony :(
Has anyone had difficulties with Mexico to US transactions. I was going to bid on a Mexican pony but now I am not so sure. Granted she is far from mint but I am still worried about what kind of state she will arrive in if customs/homeland security are involved.
-
I hope you will find a solution too.
A new info for everyone!
Today i have received a new package from Venezuela, and my heart skipped a beat when i saw it was opened again from the custom!
But luckily i've asked to the seller to flatten the boxes and put the pony in bubble wrap.
I've been lucky because the custom opened the bubble wrap with a cutter but the blade didn't reached the pony!
Hugs!

I was wondering if having the box flattened might not be a better option. So glad this one reached you ok SS, even though Customs opened the parcel.

Maybe we out to put together a fact sheet on proper dismantling of a package and pony as well as putting back together instructions. Then the seller can just print it out and enclose it in the package with a note stating something to the effect that this is not just a toy but a valuable collectible and to use care when inspecting. Even though it wouldn't keep them in unopened condition it may still keep most of the value intact if they knew how to properly take them apart and repackage...
-
In any case we should put FRAGILE and HANDLE WITH CARE in big bold letters on the package :(
-
I don't know if anyone remembers the fact that toys coming into the US are subject to being Destroyed, but thank goodness we don't hear much about that.I include a disclaimer in every package I ship out regardless where it goes:
Caution:This/these item/items are intended as a vintage collectible. It has not been tested for lead or phthalates and should be kept out of the reach of Children.

UPDATE! Last week I received a replacement pony for the girl that was damaged from Figurasdeaccion. This time he sent her opened with the box folded flat and although customs did inspect it again, the pony wasn't hurt! The seller was very willing to help, responded quickly and was the one to offer another pony as compensation if I paid shipping costs. I had asked for a partial refund, but this was a good compromise. :)
This time it was sent insured using the paypal transaction record as a receipt and that worked really well. Honestly I think they are more careful with insured packages, and I bet if it hadn't been insured they would have ripped her head off again. :/ I did have to pay customs, but I didn't mind if it meant a safe pony!
Anywho a pic of my new girls looking cute,
visitors can't see pics , please register or login

Very generous of Figuras, wow! That's so wonderful that your pony arrived safe and sound this time around, too! They look so pretty. :)
I suppose more sellers should just debox them (as awful as that sounds :() and insure them if they are having this issue.

Nice, Congrats, blue CC is really pretty and they look so cute together.

They are very easy to debox and put back into the package, even though they are no longer MIB, they were never secured in there in the first place. Less chance for damage at customs to the package or the pony.

Wow, stuff like that just infuriates me! :enraged: How can customs people EVER think that's okay?! Regardless or not if it's a collectable, how can they just manhandle ANYTHING like that and completely destroy it, and then get away with it!
Ugh, sorry for that rant; I'm so sorry you had to go through all that! ;-;
But after reading through the thread I'm glad it all worked out as best it could. Very nice of the seller to offer you another pony as compensation! :lovey:

I think she could qualify for a MIB even if she has been taken out for a little while, and then been put back again. :) she would not be MISB (mint in sealed box -hey! No sealing in the first place!) or NRFB (never removed from box) though. But a lose(ish) pony in a easy-to-open box could never have any guarranty that they havent been opened in the past (all our vennies could have been opened in the store. Example: they could quite easy fall of that carboard holding with some shaking, and would then be ratteling around inside, in need of a helping hand).
The pony is still "mint" and she is hanging out, complete, in her box just as she where when once boxed in factory = Mint In Box :)
Just my point of view! :D
________
I'm happy that the problems where sorted out! :) such a lovely pony!

most of the 'MIB' Venezuelan ponies I have seen on ebay have been photographed OUT of the box; they were left on the cardboard insert, but the pony itself was taken out for the photos, so most MIB Venezuelan ponies can't really be called NRFB. :)
