Title: G3 Glitter ponies
Post by: Teagan_Louise on February 20, 2012, 05:48:15 PM
I have 3 G3 glitter ponies [the see through plastic with visible glitter]

Has anyone had any problems with them feeling really sticky/oily? I had noticed this when I was going through my boxes of ponies.

I'm a bit nervous in giving them a soapy bath incase it makes it worse.

i have one i just got that is sticky but i think that's cuz i found it at a thrifty.  I recently took my pinkie pie back out of her box (i stored her and my other 2003s in their boxes when we moved) and she was reaally stickky and oily.  I hope my others aren't that way. (they're back at home and im at college...) I tried washing her with dish soap and it didnt help. I hope that someone here knows how to fix this and what causes it.

There was a thread about this on the old boards. It seems that most of the G3 glitters are already having plasticiser breakdown problems, and are becoming sticky and discoloured, even if they're still in their original packaging.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! gosh! this is almost as bad as finding out my childhood ponies randomly started to get cancer and regrind!!!!!  that's sad.... I remember saving up my money from my birthday and christmas for over a year to buy the ponies when the started making them again.  I hope pinkie is the only one that got it!!! :<  I only played with them once or twice then kept them in their boxes.  CURSE YOU HASBRO AND YOUR QUALITY CONTROL FAILS!!!!

Yup, this is an already know issue with the Divine Shine girls. A little sad. :(

And I haven't heard of Pinkie pie having this issue, the Divine Shines are made of a different plastic blend.

Hmmm, I think I need to revisit my G3s that are in storage.  I haven't noticed any of them having that issue, but I should probably take another look.

I pulled her out to show my mom how i changed a pinkie into a boy and how they were different. I noticed she was extra shiney and i pulled her out and ... ewwe... she was slimy and gross and sticky and gross... I dunno if it is the same thing but i have kept her in her box since i got her in 2003, only pulling her out for short play when i was younger.  :/  sooo gross.  so sticky... so not coming off!!!

Yeah, it's only the Divine Shine ones that seem to have this problem so far.

That is strange :s I'm not sure what to suggest other than wipe her down with something that absorbs oil, but not too much. That does sound similar to what's happening with the DS though.

At this rate the G1's will outlive some of the G3's.

Don't make them like they used to, as the saying goes. That's too sad. In the future those ponies won't be around. :(

I have heard that this is what happens before ponies turn really hard. I have been wanting to get the DS ponies but now... :(

I shall have to check ours, we have both loose and MIB and have not had any issues with them.

i have 2 of them and they're both sticky, my orange one discolored to more of a pinkish orange (im baiting her), and my pink one is sticky too, and her legs are starting to discolor :(

not related, but some of my regular g3's are also starting to have head and body color mismatches. ugh... why did they have to make the g3's with such bad material that they have to discolor after only a couple years?!

I had heard about it happening to the G2 Hip Holly, but I didn't know it also happened in the G3's! I need to get out mine and see if they're damaged :(

I have a perfect Glitterbelle and I'm planning to keep her in a cool dark place.  I also have Flower Garland whom I received with body/glitter degrade, I think the plastic degradation was complete when I got her as she is not and hasn't been sticky.

Oh no!  Mine are like that, too, sadly.

My 3 are still their vibrant orange, purple and pink, but the plastic is so strange, and it is slightly harder then the rest of my ponies.

So would a soapy bath be a lost cause?

Well it can't hurt :)

It's worth noting that this isn't a sudden thing, it started about two years after they were released if you can belive it. It also seems to be happening at different rates for different collectors. I'm not sure a cool dark place would do them all that much good if it's plastic degradation to be honest, it's like regrind, if it's gonna go there's nothing you can do to stop it unfortunatley. :/

I have one, and she's like that too even though she was fine when I got her from the thrift store a couple years ago. Giving them a dishsoap bath does seem to help for a while, but I coat them with it and then let them sit for half an hour or so before I wash it off. If I wash it off right away it doesn't do much.

I also have a Pinkie Pie who is super sticky and disgusting and gross. Maybe a certain release of Pinkie just had wonky plastic that breaks down quickly, because she's way worse than my DS pony.

I haven't noticed this with mine; I'll have to check them! I didn't realize this was happening.

Hearing this makes me sad. I really wanted to get that set, but now I am not so sure. Which makes me rethink my entire collecting goal. I can't say I am after one of each US release if I don't buy that set. lol

Sigh. I've had 6 Divine Shines and the first 5 were/still are fine. Just the other day though, I found Secret Wish (my first of her) who is already suffering from this issue. Really, really sad. :/

Also, I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but Pinkie Pie is not the only non DS pony suffering from this (though I think this is the first I've heard of her having this issue). My Kimono is also sticky and gross. I made a thread about it not super long ago at the old board and if I remember right, a couple other people also said their Kimonos were sticky, too. I think there are a couple other random ponies people named, though I can't think of any.

I have a terrible feeling that this might just be the beginning of this issue.

That is ominous...

I know our collections may suffer from this, but what about all the G3's that have been used as cutoms so far? This could seriously mess with people's hard work...

:< New toys shouldn't HAVE this problem! I can understand it in vintage toys but they should have worked out all the kinks by now!

im dying to get back and check my other ponies!!!! I hate being away at college when i need stuff at home... and im not sure i trust my mom enough to check... not to be mean to her, but I keep them in their original boxes and she'd probably open mib ones. :/

Mine are all stored away in a plastic lock box with like 300 other G3 ponies, so they are more or less kept in a dark cool place, I'd be worried if they were on display though. I guess I'll give them a bath and see what happens.
