Animal Swap!
This swap has an animal theme, this includes reptiles, birds and fish. There will be two categories; customs with sculpting to turn a fart into an animal and customs with animals painted on them (this can include sculpting if you want, just not a fart sculpted to look like an animal).This is for realistic style animals please, not cartoony animals. Let's get really creative and think outside the box on this one, should be tons of fun!

Rules:
1. You must have 10 5-star arena feedback and no 1/2-star arena feedback.
2. You must have been an arena member for at least 6 months before sign ups are over.
3. You must have pictures of at least 3 of your most recent customs to show the quality of your work. This is a skill based swap and I need to know where to put you.
4. Ship on time! I realize real life issues come up sometimes. If this happens, I want to know about it as soon as you realize you will be late.
5.No shipping ear;y unless both partners are ready to ship and I have authorized both.
6. Be prepared with progress pics at progress date.
7. Send me pictures of your completed custom before you ship.
8. Let me know right away when you ship your fart and when you receive one.
9. Do not let anyone know who your partner is. It is secret.
10. This swap includes all generations of flowers (G1, G2, G3, G3.5, and G4), if there are any of these you do not like, include that in your form. Do not use any fakies unless your partner requests it.
12. You must be in no more than 2 other swaps (total of 3).
13. The title of your PM should be elephant , so I know you read the rules.
14. PM the sign up form to me (Tiella) by the sign up deadline.
15. You must check in for the final check in 1 week before shipping. If you do not check in, you will not be receiving a fart.
16. KEEP YOUR SHIPPING RECEIPTS! You need to be able to produce proof of shipping when asked. You need to hold onto your receipt until your partner confirms that they have received their fart. I also highly recommend delivery confirmation for those not shipping internationally.

Are you sure we can't list more than three..? :lookround: How about genera? Like entering 'equus' as one animal, including all horse-like animals from zebras to donkeys? :biggrin: I want my partner to surprise me! (Okay the truth is there are way too many awesome animals and I have a hard time picking favourites...)

I ask b/c my top 2 animals are spiders and dragons ;) and if not, I'll have to put some serious thought into coming up with more animals for my partner (though spider ponies are awesome - I promise!)
another question: if we pick an animal that doesn't have a 4-legged form (like a bat or a shark) and we do the "turn it into" category, can we do "inspired by" so that it's a bat-pony or shark-pony? I think it would be strange to get a pony head with the rest sculpted b/c it didn't "fit" the pony body/legs thing...but trying to make it into that animal and keep it realistic is a big challenge

I have a question about the paint only, Can we request that the pony be painted in the pattern of the animal instead of a symbol (ie: tiger and have the pattern on the pony)?

I think it's what you want to receive that matters. ;) In this context I'd say unnatural colours are acceptable, as long as the style is realistic, as opposed to cartoony. I would accept fantasy colours for the simple reason of colour matching; it might be difficult to combine animals with favourite colours in some cases. But let's wait and see what Tiella has to say about this... :)
I prefer natural colours myself. That should be no problem if my partner is going to use my favourite colours, it'll probably end up all brown, lol. JK. I like colours!

Well, it's kinda hard to say that, for example, a purple zebra is realistic. Either you go realistic or not.

There has been some confusion and I have gotten some questions. I originally intended for this swap to have natural/realistic animals. Unless your partner requests specifically for a purple giraffe or something along those lines let's try and stick with natural animals. I added the favorite colors category on the form more so for the painting category if people wanted to base the body and or hair color on their partner's favorite colors. I am sorry if I confused people, this is my first time hosting a swap and I am trying to get it all right. If anyone has questions feel free to PM me privately.

Well, it's kinda hard to say that, for example, a purple zebra is realistic. Either you go realistic or not.
(First of all, I apologize for getting nitpicky, especially after Tiella has already addressed the issue.)
I usually refer to my style as 'semi-realistic' because I often use black lines, and I know I'll never be capable of true realism, only feeble attempts. So I won't even try, I rather stick to the realistic elements I'm able to incorporate and allow myself to stylize the rest. Technically, if there's lineart involved, you cannot call that 'realism', but I doubt that any of us wants to define realism that strictly in this context. For the purposes of this swap (the painting category), I wouldn't mind, say, an impressionistic style, or something along those lines. It's not realism, but with a few brushstrokes you can achieve remarkably lifelike results, or at least an illusion of lifelikeness. You can even use some crazy colours and still make it look like a real animal.
And because animal art is always awesome, let me share some pics. Hope these inspire those, too, who are not interested in this whole realism vs. non-realism issue. :) The first three represent realism, the other three do not, yet I believe they're still something that would be allowed in this swap. Of course, everyone has to decide for themselves what they want or do not want to receive.

However, we're only talking about MLP customs here after all. It's really not that serious even if I'm making it sound like it is... Sorry for that. :D
Anyway, after discarding my first plan, I'm actually done with my sketch and I must say I looove it! I just hope I'm able to actually transfer the design onto the real pony, lol. It's one thing to draw the symbol in pencil in that scale - painting that won't be nearly as easy. But let's see how it goes. ^^
I have the bait and the hair ready, too. I hope I shall find some time to sit down and start painting soon.

I agree with you Griffin, I never meant realism in the traditional way as we will need some black outlines and such. More along the lines of "let's make the animals look as they are meant to look, not like donald duck". Does that make any sense?
Goodness those pictures are inspiring, makes me wonder if I could paint like that! You might see some traditional art from me soon! I would love to try oils again someday, I was rather good with them in my teens but that was so long ago...watercolors were never my forte though.

I love watercolours myself, definitely my preferred medium. ^^ I have never tried oils, might be fun. Acrylics are not really my thing (how funny is that), or maybe it's just that I haven't found a good way to work with them - maybe I expect them to behave like watercolours, which they do not, of course. I should try some new styles and techniques to make them work.

Just wanted to make all my swap people aware of an absence. Monday 03/19 and Tuesday 03/20 I will be at the children's hospital an hour and a half away for my 18 month old to have heart surgery. I will have a laptop with me, but I may not have time to look at it. If we end up having to stay longer I will contact another mod to let you know.

Finally took some time out of school to plan this sucker. I spent all day today working on a project for school, so tomorrow is pony day!

AAahh I just rediscovered lemurs! Teeheehee, love those critters. Drawing one now for an animal themed deco booklet. ^-^ This is exactly what I meant when I said the world is full of amazing animals and picking only a few would be hard... managed to do that but I keep coming up with all kinds of animals that would be great to see as customs. If I had more time I'd do a series of animal customs just for the fun of it. Maybe I'll need to do a lemur custom now...
As for the swap progress, I'm still doing the FBR. There's plenty of time so I'm trying to be patient this time and do more layers than I usually do... let's see. Looking pretty good already. :)

Sounds like everyone is chugging along, don't forget next week is the 1st check in. I can take check ins at any point you wish to send them. Myself I am still torn on the bait I want to use, can't decide on a g3 or g4. G3 allows more working space, but g4 provides a fun challenge to paint so tiny. I have an idea of my design in my head already and have done some inspiration picture searching.

Err, the problem with painting: once you start, you can't stop. Or I can't. I'm almost done :O Well, the most difficult part is done, I think I'll need an hour or so to finish it. I'm happy that the animal I picked, as much as I like it, is no obsession or anything for me - otherwise I'd probably be tempted to keep her. :P
Well, there will be procrastination after I finish the painting since rehairing isn't exactly one of my favourite things... :'D I guess I should leave this one sit for a while and work on commissions instead.

After looking at my painted animal for a week, I decided to try to fix the anatomy as it was really bugging me... My sister was kind enough to give me honest feedback that pushed me to try again. So far I have the outlines sketched out and I can say it looks much better now. :) Yay!

My pony is rehaired and I'm starting to work on the paint work :) . Since I'm using my bait's body color for the background there's just little precautions to be taken hehe. It's coming out very cute so far :lovey: . It's not a super fancy layout but I'm sure my partner will appreciate it ^^.

I hope that everyone is busy working on their customs since no-one's being talkative. ;D
I sealed my pony but I think I need to add another layer, missed some spots between the legs etc. I'm working at a slow pace 'cause there's so much time and I have other customs that need my attention more urgently. Too bad this custom is actually the one that inspires me the most, I have to fight the urge to pick up hair and finish her this minute. :D

I got my pony from CSA today...O M G I'm in love! I seriously gasped when I saw her XD (Go post her CSA so I can drool all over her thread!)
I'll get a pic taken as soon as I finish what I'm working on right now. It's about 90% done, I had to redo part of it a few times because I'm extremely picky on how my work looks lol. Won't be long tho :D

...aaand I'm finally back home and got to see what I had received - one of Jupi's stunning zebra ponies! And not just any zebra, a beautiful white one with a realistic zebra portrait and green accents. :heart: Thank you so much, I love her! Please post pics! ^__^
