REALLY!!???!?!?! HUNDREds of $$ for a home made plushie!!!????
just go on ebay and sort from highest to lowest price....
do these people know they are not an actual mlp?!
shocking... seriously
wish i knew how to sew!
-
There are quite a few fans of the show who want more show accurate things out there, and for a while now they've been willing to pay silly prices for more show accurate toys, and I think more importantly plushies. Some prefer unofficial stuff to the official, and do know it was homemade.
If only I didn't have dumb fingers, I'd try to make some, probably make a bit of money :devious:
-
heres an auction that already ended

Some of those plushies look AMAZING. It's a work of art lol. I would never pay that much myself though.
My friends keep telling me to attempt making some because I do a lot of sewing and used to make teddy bears/plushies all the time. I don't think I want to though. Plus I live a smoking household (not me D:) and as I recently learned, ALL my clothes smell of it so I'd imagine the fabrics I work with do too.
-
Yup, this crazyness has been going on since...I don't even remember, last summer?
It's the bronies I think. For some reason they don't mind paying amounts like that and even seek out custom plushies to buy. I have seen them sell for more than $1000.
Oldbie G1 collectors wouldn't believe it when they first saw it, then they hurried to their sewing machines I guess. I would do that myself I had the time and the skills lol ;)
There have been all sorts of great custom plushies lately on ebay, even talking ones and such, so obviously a lot of work went into some of them. I mean some of those plushies are actually worth the amount they sell for. Not all of them though!
And yes, show accuracy is probably a big part of it.
*cough the plushies Hasbro make are a joke cough*
-
I am one of those people who believes you should be able to pay what you like for what you want....I have paid over the odds for items in the past and am sure I will again.
BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT even I will admit some of the plushie prices are amazing...and I seriously wish I had time to make a couple simply to sell!

omg seriously?! i never check the 1990-now section so i guess thats why i never noticed... that luna plush is already almost at $800 with some time to go yet....
craziness indeed :throw:

whatt???! what happened?! link??

Yep, these go for a LOT. There was a Fluttershy gala plush that went for 2.5k USD. There was also a Rainbow Dash plush, measuring at about four feet tall, that sold for nearly 5k USD. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170703151061#ht_1264wt_1165) If I had a sewing machine, I would be churning out plushies like there's no tomorrow :P
-
What I really love about the pony community is all the gusto fans have to make show-accurate items. On some other pony site, there is a thread with details on how to make your own plushy or how to make your brush-able Apple Jack a cowgirl hat. I think it's great that people are getting creative.
These homemade plushies so so much better than the licensed ones. If people want to bid up to that amount, that is okay with me. It is made by the pony community and fans FOR the fans.
-
I have nothing against people paying out the butt for some of those plushies. Good on the people making them, that's awesome. If your talent is making plush toys, and you're good at it, you deserve to profit from it. I'm stoked to see people with talent making money with their talents. I hope people keep paying 1k+ for some of those plushies. The people who are making them have put in A LOT of time to get that good, and they've earned their cash ins.
-
Oh no....I dont think I have a link anymore...sorry sweetie [no doubt someone will have it]....now dont get me wrong it was an impressive piece of work but it sold for about $5000 [twice!!!! I must have been bought by someone who then sold it on again]....

ya TOTally fine with me, i just hope these crazies dont all of a sudden get a hankering for Argie G1s!! unless of course im selling lol! :silly:
-
My real puzzlement on that Dashie plush @ 5K....why wouldnt you commissions someone to make you one for a significantly lower amount of money?
As I said....I believe you should be able to over pay as much as you like for what you want...I have done so for G1 ponies and accessories and will happily do so again...but at the same time I will join in the "wow!! really?" comments cause its new phenomenon for me to see hand made plushies going so high
-
Well, of course it's extremely expensive (extreeeeemely), and based on existent characters, but those plushies are handcrafted by some talented sewers, they're one-of-a-kind, and represent a lot of work (I mean in hours, but also in experience. Not everybody can translate patterns directly from a drawing and make it looks good).
And, look closely, most of the plushies have embroidered eyes and symbols, meaning that they've been sewed on very specific (and expensive) machines, maybe by professionnal sewers, doing this for their fun.
Those can't be considered as toys, but as collectibles.
That way, even if I couldn't myself put that price, I perfectly understand that some people do.
(really, look at BJD's, for example, some are going so high in price, just because the make up has been done by someone special, or is very beautiful, even on a very usual model. That's kinda the same to me.)
And frankly, it's great to see some people are ready to pay that price, because it really pays for the work the sewer had on it (I mean, 200 or 300 bucks is what, in hours ? 20 or 30, bad paid ? And I guess the sewer maybe spent much more on these plushes)
-
There was a Fluttershy dressed for the Gala plush that sold for $2500 a few months back. Holy cannoli, that's a lot of money to pay for a stuffed friend. **it was really amazing thought!!**
-
When my boyfriend and I bought materials to make two small plushies it costed us $35 - $40, and we were only using anti-pill fleece that was already 40% off. X___X Can't imagine how much minky costs. Either way, I understand how they can be expensive, but I will never understand when it costs SEVERAL hundreds or even thousands.
-
guuuurl you need to make that happen!!!!
febreeze em!!! seriously tho!!
Lol!!!!! Thanks for the motivation!! XD
I just might start drafting patterns.. worst case I know where the rejects can live happily lol.
-
There was a custom :muffin: Pony pony that just ended and sold for over $2,000
http://www.ebay.com/itm/190636899335?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I really wish I knew how to make plushies :p
-
I made that Celestia! :P I don't know why people bid so much either, but I'm not complaining! XD I've have dozens of Commisions, I had one to make the whole mane six for this guy in Prague :)
-
well, I am in awe of such talent. I cant afford to play that much for plushies, but many of them are a work of art. And I do agree many of the custom plushies are of much better quality than those that are mass produced.
It would be nice to see some G1 custom plushies. I think Sweet Stuff would be divine (lol)
-
Some of those plushies are amazing, I wish I had that talent.
There's a princess luna plush on ebay now that I'll love to get, but it's already getting near the $1,000 mark; No way I can pay that much on a plushie...
-
It's all far too rich for my blood but I love watching from the sidelines. Some of those people put a lot of work into their craft and end up with true art. The prices are insane but in a way I'm also happy their work is being rewarded.
Another way of getting a better plush that isn't as expensive but less work then doing it from scratch? Mod one.
Cloudkicker on some other pony site is messing around with her Canterlot Twilight to give it a better mane/tail, less of a double chin and a less square butt.
Edit: Ooookay, so we aren't allowed to talk about the pony-related message board and "channel"? I removed the link since it died. Anyone interessted can find it real quick.
-
I'm always super impressed at the quality of some of these plushies and I believe the artist deserves every cent. It's not an art I have dared to try, but really wish I could, but I know it takes a lot of time and money to get it started.
I would love to learn how to make plushies, though. Not just MLP ones, but b/c I collect really strange animal plushies and would love to figure out how to make them myself! I'd love to talk to a plushie artist and get tips or even a few lessons!
-
Gotta go find my needle and thread. Think I even have some felt left over from my other projects. But in seriousness, isn't this crossing the boundaries of copyright? I'm sure Hasbro would be unamused by this.
-

Definitely. It's not just a matter of getting yourself a sewing machine and whipping one up. They all have a great skill and probably years of experience. For some of these people this is their full time job (not just the ponies, but plush making).
I love that :muffin: Pony. She is so cute.
-
Some of those plush are amazing. However, i sure hope those buyers will still love FIM in a couple of years. XD But than again, i wouldn't spend thousands on any kind of collectible out there.
-
Yeah I was wondering too about the copyright infringement thing... these are intellectual property, so isn't making a huge profit on someone else's characters kind of like... fraud? I'm wondering if these high sales are going to result in high attorney fees for some people.
Don't get me wrong, they are super CUTE and works of art!
-
Yeah, I believe most of these plushies really deserve that price. Think of them being akin to sculptures made out of fabric.
Me...I'd love a cheaper plushie to hug. Something that at least looks something like the character and doesn't look like it has a broken neck. I'm looking at you G4 plushies. DX
-

I agree with this.
Also, love your avatar. I have two spyhnx kitties at home.
-
Yes i saw them yesterday....crazy prices indeed but some where very lovely made though....
-
There is a gorgeous Luna custom going for almost 800 bucks right now!
-
I too have seen lots of these lately. There was one Twilight Sparkle push I was IN LOVE with. It was better than any official product that I've seen and it looked just like her. I wish I had the nearly $600 it ended for. I wouldn't spend that much on her but still....I wish I could afford her.
-
Oh man. I better learn how to sew!
-
That is why I like making the little crochet plushies of the characters and such. They are smaller, cuddly, and I'm just asking for the time and materials put into the fanart. Seriously a Discord plush for $40-50 is pretty decent considering all the different pieces and colors needed.
Heck, I'm doing this for fun and to help pay extra on bills here and there. I need to learn how to sew plushies as well. We need to get all the plushie people together on here sometime for a plushie fashion show so to speak.
-
Man, I've seriously been sewing the wrong kind of stuff! Methinks I need to come up with a plushie pattern lol.
-
I'm just pleased for the people making those things when they go for such insane prices. They are incredible pieces of work and it takes serious skill to make something that perfect. It's lovely that people appreciate that work
-
People are doing that because the fan plushies are usually really high quality. Yes, they know they're not real MLP. That's why they're getting them. Because Hasbro probably will never make plushies this good. I'm surprised you didn't know about this sooner...
-
I made that Celestia! :P I don't know why people bid so much either, but I'm not complaining! XD I've have dozens of Commisions, I had one to make the whole mane six for this guy in Prague :)
I noticed it was you selling! amazing work, congrats on the sale :D
And this I can say to all the sellers :) Although, I really cannot imagine who actually has thousands of dollars to spend on a plushie :O
-
Wow! Wish I could sew! They do look nice though--better than that poor Twilight Sparkle plush from Target.
-
Man, I really wish I had the time to sit down and sew. lol
-
Major congrats to the person who made that :muffin: Pony plush recently, the one that sold for over 2,000. I think that's a new record, from what I've seen on ebay. It's crazy what bronies will pay, but I definitely understand.
And ya gotta hand it to the amazing artists sewing these plushies, I'm super jealous of their work some times. xD
-
I made that Celestia! :P I don't know why people bid so much either, but I'm not complaining! XD I've have dozens of Commisions, I had one to make the whole mane six for this guy in Prague :)
That was you!?!?! OMG I am so happy for you!!! Sweetie, you have amazing skills:). If I haven't said it before...you are so awesome!! I wish I could afford your customs!
-
A fool and his money are soon parted.
-
Some of these plushies are amazing!
I was bidding on a gorgeous talking Big Mac a while ago, but I missed the end of the bid and he was sold to someone else. Unfortunately I deleted the item from my didn't win list.... Does anyone know who made him as I am thinking about asking them to make me a commission.
I am in someways so glad that fans are making such good quality plush toys.... and that they are earning what they deserve for them through these auctions.
To be honest I have never bought a single HASBRO licensed plush as I have never really liked any of them, and they don't seem to get any better! Those recent talking Twilight and Pinkie Pie Canterlot plushies were little monsters!
Lol. I'd love to someday have the entire cast of FIM fan plushies all in one big heavenly, soft ,fluffy, big squishy room!
-
I just hope these people selling fan made items don't get hit with lawsuits by Hasbro =p I think the plushies are awesome, but it's not their characters to make money off of.
-
Yeah, people are really talented. I doubt Hasbro will sue. If anything, they're noticing the fan demand for things and arranging the new figures like Nightmare Moon etc.
I love my custom plushes that I bought but I would never pay that much... I think some just get caught in the frenzy of bidding.
-
Holy smokes!!
My computer broke down last month and I haven't made much time for the computer since late last year anyways... I'm just now finally getting back on more regularly and such... and uh yeah, wow.
To come back and see all of this?
oh my gosh!
Granted, yes, I see some serious skill put into these homemade plushies but just ...wow!! To even imagine what life would be like to so easily afford anything you want and at such flashy prices! Congrats to all the winners and way to go to all the sellers... excuse me now but I think I'm going to go look into taking a sewing class... xD
(do they even have such classes??) lol
:lmao:
-
Yes yes all the seemstresess are very talented but im pretty sure thier talent isnt causing these insane prices... its the insane bidders!!
and more power to ya seemstresses!!! milk this trend for all its worth ;)!!
-
Makes me wish I was still making plushies. I couldn't even sell one hand-sewn, hand-painted plush for $30-40 a few years ago, which is part of the reason why I stopped. (And I had to get a day job, so with that and my comic I don't have much free time on my hands) Congrats to the talented people getting paid what their good work is worth!
-
If I had a pattern I could sew these really well... it's the pattern I can't make :P lol!
These plushies are amazing, I wish I had the pattern-making skills to do some! I might give it a shot though ;)
-
I think these fan-made plush toys are much nicer in quality and accuracy than any that Hasbro would be interested in making, and thus they capture high prices because they're sold in limited quantities but so many people are interested in owning one. I think it's great to see that the craftspeople who make the plushies are being fairly compensated for their work--too often handcrafted work of this nature is sold at a pitifully low price that barely covers the creator's materials and they receive no money for their time and effort. I'm sure that most of these plushie creators will not offer most of their toys on commission because they know they could currently make more money via auction--and I think there is so much demand for cute stuffed animals of the various canon and fan-made ponies that the potential workload would seem overwhelming.
-
Oh my goodness! There are no words. They are beautiful but... I'm calling my mom and asking her to make me one :P
-
I just hope these people selling fan made items don't get hit with lawsuits by Hasbro =p I think the plushies are awesome, but it's not their characters to make money off of.
Fan art copyright law suits are VERY rare, due to the fact that pieces of art will not have an economic impact to the licensed merchandise. Most companies don't bother with these because fan art fuels a community of supporters and provides a mass amount of free publicity for the copyright holders.
in a legal sense, yeah Hasbro could have a field day with the artists but the affect it would have to the company and it's target consumption audience would be worth so much more than the fan art in question.
It's a delicate balancing act between the copyright holder, the artist and the communities. Ultimately it's Hasbro's decision on what they want to do.
I can tell you that if Hasbro had major issues they would not of allowed the sales of fan art to happen under their own roof at the MLP Convention. Heck Hasbro artists judged the art and custom competitions with categories like Hasbro inspired.
-
I think the plushies are neat. I wouldn't buy one for that kind of money, but I really like seeing what's been made ^^ Some of the details are just wonderful.
-
Yea I really don't know what to think of this. I am happy for the person that makes such high quality items but I don't see down the road any collectibility in these that the money would be returned should one need to sell. Since its not licensed..I mean beautiful..but what will happen down the road? We have some wonderful artists out there..but as I have seen with artist type dolls..there is this huge rage and then the bottom opens up and you have all this stuff you spent so much money on that no one will ever want again...that really bothers me. Beautiful work...no doubt. Congrats to the creator. Beautiful job and you deserve to be paid for your hard work.
-
I have been watching these auctions for a while because it is more exciting to watch than reality television :) I have gotten scary good at predicting which ones will go for 300+ There is some REALLY talented people making these plushies. I actually sent a bunch of links to a couple of my co-workers' wives who sew to try and get them on board. Non-pony collectors think it is insanity but I have been educating them in all things FIM lol.
-
I have been making MLP G1 and G4 plush for a couple of years now and I sell excusively to the pony community for a reasonalbe price ($30 - $40 range). I am retired and enjoy making them. But most of all, I love the fact that people like my work and want to buy them.
Kudos to the artists who are cashing in on the FiM character frenzy currently on e-Bay, but I think I will continue to do it my way.
-
I could understand them being so high because they worked hard making them look right. Speaking of which, apparently these eBay auctions can't have MLP or FiM in the title because of copyright or something silly as one seller had to take down the auction or something and have it not include that. I read about this from a dA user.
-
If thats the case that

Was this because Hasbro or Ebay asked them? I havent heard of HB interfering like this on ebay before...its not a nice pattern. I know its well within their right to do so and I understand why they would. But its just that they have kind of let us all get on with it in past without being too big brother-y and maybe they are going to stop being so lenient

As I understand, it was eBay but why force them to take it down when they made it? I mean customs go up all the time and I haven't heard this type of thing being used there. Maybe they aren't as recognizable?
-
@StarSwirl...wow ebay asked them? thats a bit of a pain...considering the amount of FiM/Hasbro inspired customs that sell there...hopefully just a one off!
-
If I remember correctly, it was a butthurt user who reported a listing and eBay pulled the auction. Then told them they were not allowed to use any trademarked phrases in the auction titles.

Lol...I think ebay would loose a lot of its listings if everything with a trademark in the title was pulled! There is no sussing ebay's strategy on anything...they seem to only react if someone points something out...
And sorry to Rel for the completely off topic swing....
-
I had noticed these a while back. If I could sew, I'd start making and selling them too! They are great quality, though way too pricey for me to afford!
Still, I have to say congrats to all the sellers/seamstresses!
-
I have always been good at sewing and I recently acquired a sewing machine and a whole bunch of fuzzy, pony-quality fabric.
Mimic, Ice Crystal, Lambasta Pony and Mexican Firefly... HERE I COME!!!!
-
OOO!!! Dibs on Mimic when you get her figured out! DD would flip over the big Dash.
'Fess up, if you won the lottery or something, would you buy a $$ plushy? ;)
