Title: I want to go traveling.
Post by: Repulsive333 on February 08, 2012, 06:49:52 PM
So i have lived in the states of Oregon and Washington (USA) my entire life. I have never traveled outside of them and i feel like i am getting cabin fever.
I have always been poor so traveling has always been out of the question, especially because i spend all of my extra money on ponies and dolls.
But i really want to travel.
In fact i am cutting myself off of buying anymore expensive dolls... it is hard. lol

I know that there are a few places that i want to travel but i do not know the best way to go about since i have never been anywhere really.

I want to go to the following places (plus more, just listed a few)
Netherlands
Germany
Australia
New Zealand
Japan
England
Scotland
Kenya
Brazil
Thailand

Can anyone tell me of cheap or low priced places to stay or anything about these places?

Or just comments...

I'm in New Zealand, so if you want to know anything specific ask away :) except I know more about the South Island than the North.
There are loads of backpackers and hostels here which are cheap places to stay.  The expensive part will be getting here...
I've been to Oregon, its lovely there!  :)

I am afraid of hostels... I have heard horror stories about bed bugs... :(

I want to get a feel for the real heart of NZ, not what tourists see. And i want to stay for a while... I don't know it is always so beautiful in photos.
What is different about the South and North islands? I mean more specifically

South Island is less populated, more mountainous in short.  Often called 'heartland'.  If you're into the outdoors NZ is fantastic!
We drive on the opposite side of the road to you...

That sounds like fun! I've never been anywhere either. You'll have to take lots of pics on your travels to share!

Well, I could help for France and China but none are in your list :p

Anyway, I can still say a few things ;)

Japan - A LOT of my friends went there, they all said it was amazing, wondeful, the best trip of their life except for te fact that it completely drained their money! Hotels are definitely not cheap and you'll nearly wan to buy anything you'll see! So I'd say prepare a good budget for this one.

Thailand - Visited a little (Bankok and suburbs only). Gorgeous place! Lots of greenery and very friendly people. What helped me a lot was having Thai friends (from my studies in Beijing) so I didn't go the usual tourist way. Some friends did a very touristic tour and tey loved it too anyway. You'll feel quite rich there as their currency is quite low and stuff is cheap too. Also: FRUITS!

Enjoy your trip!

South Island is full of transport, buses, trains, ferries, and currently earthquakes.

North Island is full of the same, but with more Maori place names and volcanoes.

And we're all nutters.

Hey what a great idea :D
If you come to England I guess London is a place to go, (But I recommend Cornwall!...it's beauutiful and rugged my favourite place is Tintagel. Beeautiful ruins, and it's near Boscastle which is so pretty. Things are further apart than London but theres buses and coaches and stuff)

I love traveling!  I lived in England for a few years, and I can tell you that my favorite touristy thing to do was definitely the castles.  Lots of beautiful things in Scotland as well. :)

If you're going the Netherlands, I'll guess you'll end up in Amsterdam first (surprise surprise :lookround: ) You can book an hotel there or near the airport. Orrrr you can go to another city, which might be relatively cheaper than Amsterdam. The Netherlands is really small, (it takes 2 and a half hours to reach the border with Belgium or a bit longer to Germany) You can get to The Hague, for example, within an hour by train.  Now I'm sure Amsterdam has hotels in various price ranges, but I'm not at all familiar with that city. Too many tourists XD People go there for the architecture, museums and such. But if you come here during spring and head towards my hometown, below Amsterdam, you'll find all the infamous tulips and windmills. I bet there's a ton more to do around here, I just can't think of more right now. :P

I live in Scotland and would love to go travelling someday too:)

If you're staying here, Glasgow is your best bet for shopping and leisure and stuff. You can't beat the Glasgow accent and you'll leave with a whole new language lol:) If you're after the history, then it's Edinburgh. Lots of castles and old buildings and stuff. Edinburgh dungeon is famous for it's scariness if you're after thrills:)

I think it's fairly cheap to stay in a BnB for a few nights. There aren't many hostels here.

Malancaiwan- I DO want to go to France... I just forgot to put it on there. I have ALWAYS wanted to go to France!

Loa- I am glad cause i would need public transportation anywhere i went... hehehe

Cornwall? Duly noted... I will definitely put that on my list of places to visit, i absolutely love Castles

Juri- Perth? I will have to write that one down too...

Moonbreeze - Where is your hometown... I would love to visit Amsterdam but i do not think that i will be able to afford it... I will probably have to go somewhere just a tiny bit cheaper...

naylastar- Glasgow is one of the places i have written down... I LOVE history so Edinburgh will have to be somewhere that i write down too... I LOVE the idea of going to a dungeon!!! HEHEHEHE

I think these trips are gonna get pricy...
Anyone have any friends i could stay with? LOL <3

I have done some extensive travelling and been to pretty much all the places on you list lol.
I'd be happy to help you with specifics. The longest I've been travelling is 8 months - then I ran out of money.

The first thing you need to do it limit yourself. Pick a few countries that a close together and stick with them.
What you have there is a lifetime's worth lol.
Once you've picked your area work out how long you want to go for and what your budget will be like.

Then you start planning for what time of year you would like to be there (remember different seasons for southern hemisphere) if there are any special events you'd like to be part of while you are there and how long you can stay for (visa etc.)
You'll find it pretty much works itself out after that.

But seriously - if you want help shoot me a pm :)

I went to London for 10 days a few years ago. We rented a house (it was a group trip) in Greenwich which was so much CHEAPER than a hotel. it also let us save money on food by cooking.

Good idea to go in a group, it's fun and when you split up the costs it's far cheaper. Also the pub specials for lunches are amazing so that saves money when you are out and about.

My brother travelled to Japan for 3 months and he had no issues with Hostels.  Hes also male..if it was just me, alone, well id be affraid of other things.

I cant really offer much advice.  We stay with family when we go overseas (Germany, Italy).  Im sure there you will beable to find some affordable places to stay :)

I'm in Leiden! I could give a tour if you ever get here. It has the same to offer as Amsterdam, only smaller :)

Well don't quote me on that one but, living in asia right now (china to be precise) I can tell you that you risk nearly nothing here. I remeber coming back home in Beijing from a party at 3am, sore feet so I was bare foot and holding my shoes, 45 minutes walk back and nothing happened, now that's something I would never do in Paris though I lived there all my life! :D
Actually, being a "foreign looking" man in Asia brings you much more trouble with women! (no matter your age, we got girls running after my dad in Shanghai! lol)

Hostels are the best bet for someone who is poor. Especially because i do not have any relatives or friends that live in any of those places (except England)
I just wish i had someone i could stay with that way i didn't have to worry about places to stay... and it would be cheaper for me. lol
I am so poor but i hate being stuck in one place.
I am thinking about giving up my BJD collection so i can travel. (and pay my bills)

Creampuf- I would love to travel in a group but i do not know anyone that would want to travel to the same places as i want to travel to. Plus the money factor never works out.

Moonbreeze - That would be totally awesome. <3

Malancaiwen - :)   What happens if you do that in Paris? Are the grounds just super dirty?
(hehehee your dad...)

There are various things in England, London is always a winner. The New forest near me is wonderful for quaintness and you must try the ice cream XD

Yeah, come to England! There are plenty of cheap chain hotels around here that do rooms for £20 per night. They are basic but actually quite nice! So much to see in and around London! Enjoy, whatever you decide :)

Thats a wonderful idea...I ll agree with Sebby the best idea is to limit yourself at the start - aim for a couple of destinations at the most...I spend a 3 year "gap year" travelling after school and after having crashed out of uni [managed a whole 6 weeks!] and it was fantastic fun I would recommend it to anyone who has the time and financials but I started slow, stayed close to home in Europe for the first couple of months and only then travelled further afield

I ll second the comments on Scotland - reasonably priced and tons of history plus you cant beat "deep fried mars bars" for cuisine [the French and Italians have nothing on us!]
