Title: Possible Prototype or an Oops Pony!
Post by: thesnapegirl on February 05, 2012, 08:16:04 PM
Hi there! Name's Cat (I did a lame little intro on the intro board cuz I had no idea what to say about myself, cuz I'm lame haha), and I wanted to share a pony I've had in my collection since I was about 6 or so.

I'm from Rhode Island, so us lucky people got to go to Hasbro once or twice to their outlet like area and buy ponies at a discount price. My dad used to take me there a lot (ah the perks of being an only child).

So anyway, a few years ago I was on a pony id page, and... I couldn't find this pony! Her body is Tootsie's from Year.. 3 or 4 I think (I forget) but.. well, here, let me show you.

visitors can't see pics , please register or login

So I put it to you. Have anyone else seen Tootsie with a makeover like this?

...My name is Cat and I am also from Rhode Island. (Except I recently moved out of RI.)
Holy jebus. O AO;;
Back to topic!

I have never seen a Tootsie like that before and can't seem to find info on her either. If she wasn't rehaired, then it's safe to assume she's a prototype or ~mystery~ variant. Maybe someone else will have more info on her. Does she have any markings on her hooves? Or does it just have default Hong Kong?

:what: That really is an odd one... Especially since I don't think they used that hair color until a few years after Tootsie was made (the body looks to be the standard US-release Tootsie). I wonder if it was the result of a bored factory worker who got ahold of leftover material.

Is her head loose at all? If it is, you could probably carefully remove it (a hair dryer helps if it's being stubborn) and check the inside of the mane. The hair will have a woven appearance if it is factory-done.

Wow! Whatever she is, she's a really cool variant and you're lucky to have her in your collection.

How interesting!  If you have anything else interesting from the Hasbro outlet, please let us see!

Glacia, I would have guessed that was the same hair color that Skyflier (Year 3) had, but do you think not?  If so, that would fit.

Oops! You're right, it is Skyflier's red :drunk: My bad! Still though, she is unusual. The hair length looks about right for a factory job too :awake:

Didn't one of the sea ponies from year 3 have that colour?

I can't say I love the colour combination (I've got a soft spot for blue/green Tootsie, though), but if she's factory made, that's super neat to have!  Congrats on your awesome pony!  I wonder how many varient/errors are out there belonging to people who have no idea.

(Ooh creepy Cat from not RI anymore hah! We're like twins but not?)

I remember being little and always having her, in fact I don't exactly remember NOT having her. I remember going to Hasbro (I don't even think I knew it was Hasbro, just remembered the pony packages in bins) and getting the pony friends (the giraffe and lion-ish looking ponies?) and the lil litters made by MLP.

Her head is not loose, she's actually in better condition than my others because I didn't like her at all. No idea why, she was just not my favorite. (Baby Moondancer was) She has the made in hong kong mark on the bottom of her hoof.

How interesting!  And how cool it must have been to go to Hasbro to see all those toys MOC back in the day.  :)

Found this pic of one, though they aren't the same but They do have the same hair color :)
Also don't know if it's just my monitor but Tootsie in her pic looks yellowish to me?

Hmm.  What a cool pony to have in your collection!  It's such a vibrant haircolor, especially next to that green.  :)

She looks great and I she could definitely be real. Or did you rehair her as a kid  ;)

Wow she certainly looks different! I would definitely trying to get the head off if possible to check if the hair is 'weaved' on the inside or not. But if she came  diretc from hasbro then I would say she is a sample from a line check, where a worker grabbed a 'junk' pony to practice on. Or something. :)

you are very lucky to have such a pony, you can tell her hair is factory by the way it falls and the lengh is perfect. factory variants are still coming out now with different hair colour.  you are very lucky to have a G1 one as i would say alot wouldnt have made it over the years.
she would be worth quite abit i would imagine. keep her close :)

She looks amazing with that red hair! It's neat that you were able to pick up an interesting variant. Even if you didn't care for her too much as a child at least you can appreciate her uniqueness now~

gotta say that's a pretty sweet looking variant.

Lucky, lucky you!  I'd say factory variant, especially since you picked her up directly at Hasbro and are the original owner.

Great story. I bet there's more unusual ponies like this in attics and basements!

To the person that posted about rehairing? I WISH I KNEW HOW! I love looking at the websites with all the pretty redone ponies (and those ones that people make that are completely added to and look just.. mindblowing?) I'm not a crafty person at all and once I did look at rehairing sites but.. ugh. SO much work if I even thought about doing, and with my luck it'd all fall out.

I've already gotten a PM about selling her, but no idea what she's worth. :)

Ponies like that are difficult to price. If you do go ahead and sell her, make it an auction type setting :awake: You could run it here on the Arena too to avoid ebay fees :good: She's quite possibly the only Tootsie like that though, so think carefully before you do sell her ;)

I'm going to hang on to her a little while, but I have a couple of auctions bookmarked that are considered "rare" ponies to give myself an idea.

I may, however, be selling some of my other childhood MLPs. I'm not really a collector, and they're just sitting there all by their lonesomes  :( I could think of no better place for them than with someone here that will love them.

It's hard to gauge her price since there's never been one like her sold ;) IMO, the only way to get a real sense of her value would be to take offers and see what the highest bid is.

As for the other ponies, feel free to make a thread here asking for a 'Price Check'. :) People will give you their imput on how much those ponies have been selling for lately. It's always a good idea to ask for a PC before selling if you've been out of collecting for a while since prices can fluctuate all the time. :good:

Wow, she'S so cool!!! Love the colour combo, so unique!

On a more practical side, I couldn't agree more with Glacia (and she knows her Nirvanas ^^)
