I love love love nail polish. I generally just slap on a pretty color and call it a day, but sometimes I like to try new techniques and do custom nail art. Here's a few things I've done lately. (some of these are cell phone pics, so sorry for the quality)

What are some of YOUR favorite nail art designs, or tips and tricks, or tutorials? Or just show off your pretty nails! :D
-
Those look really good! The strawberries are my favorite. I like nail art, but I'm not very good, and I can only do it on my toenails because I can't paint my own fingernails to save my life.
-
I love the strawberry nails!
They are so pretty!
-
I'm a huuugggeee nail art enthusiast! I've also done strawberry and watermelon nails. My favorite to do is probably gradients with the dark towards the tips.
My sister got me Konad stuff for christmas so I've been using that a lot lately. Which is just a basic stamping kit using regular nail polishes.
-
Wow! Those are gorgeous! I love the gradient nails!
-
Loooove the colours for the first one ♥ u ♥
They're all so cute and creative!
-
Very kool!!!
-
Oh those are awesome!
I do nail art on my friends (can't do it on my own hands for some reason, even though I'm ambidextrous.) I recently started practicing a really neat marbling technique and I must get pictures later when I do it (I can actually do it on myself.)
-
Evie, do you do water marbling? I've been wanting to try that, it looks so fun!
-
oh cool! the strawberries are making me hungry ^_^
-
Oooh those are gorgeous.
I can't really paint my nails, I lack the dexterity and also because I do animal care things like nice nail polish don't really last. D:
-
Oooohhh. I don't do my nails myself b/c I'm so right-hand dominant that I can't even apply a single colour neatly with my left hand, but a friend of mine has offered to do them for me.
This is her latest manicure;

Ahhh Fezzy those are awesome!
-
Oh, cool!
Ill sometimes do simple patterns on mine. Nothing detailed--Im left handed and cant really use my right hand to apply anything without it looking sloppy, let alone do a complex design :)
-

Yes, I do! It's a lot of fun and gives some really funky results. It's made me start painting my own nails again, haha.
-
Wow! you are so skilled. I could never do that. I love them!
-
I always do mine plain - usually quite a neutral pale pink type colour.
I have just done them a bright pink (bought it for my toes but it was my fingernails that needed redoing after bait prepping) so maybe next time I'll try something a bit more artistic!
-
Wauwie all the pictures look so good! So detailed for such a small area.
I don't wear nailpolish. I work with solvents a lot so my nailpolish will just disolve XD

My nails with a Halloween theme! ^.^
-
Very pretty :) I don't usually bother with polish, don't have the patience.
-
So fun!
-
Those look great. I never paint my nails. I did when I was younger, but then I got to where I liked picking it back off. Worse than when I'd find myself picking at a scab. :lookround: I'm weird like that.
The strawberries and the watermelon nails are my favorite. :D
-
Awesome!!!
-
Oh me luvs nail polish my fav. is china glaze & opi :D
Can't wear any at the moment cuz my natural nails are pretty thin and sensitive and I don't want any gel or acryl nails.
Here is some of my nail art =)

i love all these nails!
i used to do a lot of nail art and such, but i use my hands a lot and it gets ruined :( my poor hands are a bit of a mess right now :(
i guess i should start looking after my hands again so i can do pretty nails!
love pkw xxx

If you use a very thick topcoat on your polish it doesn't chip off easily. Or you go to a nail salon and put there a layer of acryl on your own nails without a nailtip. Your nails become very strong and you can put diff colors trough the acryl powder like glitters or colors or some decals!
I love my acryl-nails...they are so low in maintenance if you treat them wel and let them fill on time.
-
Ahhh Fezzy those are awesome!
They are! I was SO excited when she offered.
-
Ooooh I love those monarch ones!
If I do really detailed nails I design on fake nails and glue them on. Anything that has crsytals, or cutouts, etc.
One new tip I'm dying to try is making my own nail art sheets. Basically you paint onto like a ziplock bag so you can get all the detail you need, then once it's set you can peel it off and stick it to your own nails with a coat of polish inbetween. I'm looking forward to trying that to be able to get my right hand to look as nice as my left!

I use my hands far too often to wear polish - plus it tempts me to chew on it when it starts to chip and flake...

These look awesome! I paint my nails all the time and I have about 50 different nail polishes. My favourite is OPI Muppets collection ones. I very much recommend them, they look amazing and so sparkley!
-
I am so in love with all the pretty colors! I have about 30 bottles of nail polish, but I haven't really painted my nails fancily in years. (and I usually just did each nail in a different color *cough*) Now I definitely want to try the monarch butterfly pattern. At the least. ^^

Water marbling is awesome! Is it hard to do? My nails are super long, so I should do more art on them!
-
nooo it's really simple IMO, skyrocketneko!
a tip, though, is to have a white base paint (or any other colour of choice) istead of just a clear basecoat on your nails before marbling. brings out the colour better :>
my first marbling above did not have a white base (but I used white polish in the marbling), while the second did.
I always get those little bubbles though- >-<
-
I hardly ever paint my nails... I think they look weird and they are always breaking. I'm thinking of going to get a manicure soon to maybe find the right shape for them, then it'd be a bit easier to keep up with painting them maybe.
Also, I work a physical job in the summer, so nails usually don't look nice for long :p though maybe if I load up on the top coat I can have the nicest nails this summer!
I usually keep my toenails painted all summer. Hooray for sandals! (When I'm not at work that is)

Mayby like i said before, a acrylic layer on top of your own nails to make them stronger and in a better shape!
-
Wow, some of these are fabulous! I enjoy having painted nails but it can be tricky to get the perfect opportunity to sit down and do them. One of my favorite things is painting them black and putting silver sparkles over top. Simple, but so pretty.
I've never tried anything much more detailed than that but these pictures are really making me want to...do you guys use those nail polish pens they sell now to make some of these? I've been thinking of buying one so I can try something a little more intricate...
-
I love painting my nails, though I rarely do anything fancy. When I was younger, I would use a toothpick to paint something special on my thumbs for holidays, but I don't really do that much anymore. My next project is this:

Nope, I use normal polishes, and then the occasional stamping. (as in Konad stamping, just that I don't own konad, it's a cheap german knockoff)
Zenna - ooh gorgeous! Try China Glaze's matte overcoat for that. I have it, and luuuurve it.
Hey, that just about might be my next project, too. :>
-
Owh the black matte is gorgeous!!
-
I tried what zenna posted, but in pink and added little bows.
(once again not really cleaned up yet. when will I ever learn >_>)
basecoat, 3 coats of HM's "I'm A Saint", 2 coats China Glaze Matte Magic + the base coat (actually worked) for the gloss, and NYC String Of Pearls for teh bow.

these are cool :D. i had yin-yang nails about two years ago.. but sadly i don't have any pics .. :-/

So I tried the matte nail with shiny tip on a dark pink color and it looked neat, but very subtle. I tried it with several other colors too and it definitely works best on the dark colors. So once I strip my nails from their Valentine's paint, I'll be trying it again with the black. Because of all my tests, that one worked the best.

Gorgeous! I've been wanting to do newsprint nails. My nails at the moment are a bit sad XD
-
Wow they are gorgeous!!
-
Oh man, I want to do newsprint nails now!
I didn't get a pic, but I did nail art on myself last week! I painted my tips hot pink and black alternating. I just redid them though, just in peacock blue-green.
-
OMG you guys, success is mine!

Freehanded it :) I used 2 coats of China Glaze for the black, then Esse "Matte About You" on each nail. Then I just used Seche Vite top coat for the tips, which magically made them shiny! It was awesome and pretty easy.
-
looks beautiful Zenna! i love seche vite and that manicure! i want to try it with a deep teal now.
-
I remember when I was about 6 about 9 years ago now and I went to a party at my school and me and my friends got our nails done - with pretty butterflies that were sparkly! It was so long ago now.. one thing I remember was climbing in the corner outside because it was rocky.. good times..
-
looks beautiful Zenna! i love seche vite and that manicure! i want to try it with a deep teal now.
I tried it with several shades of pink first and noticed that it hardly shows up at all with light colors. I had a deep red/pink for Valentine's Day and then switched to black after. The black definitely shows up best. So just go for the darkest teal you can find.
Newsprint nails are my next project!
-
Very cool.
I like your steampunk gear one.
-
Ooohhh the black nails came out great!

I have an almost black teal I'll have to use. :) A tip with the newsprint nails is to not soak your nail too long in the alcohol or it will kind of make it tacky and the newsprint will stick to the actual polish. Post pics when you finish the newsprint manicure! :D
Anyone use Konad stamping kits?
-
I haven't tried the stamping set, but 'd be curious to.
I have to come up with something new to try for this weekend. Gonig to a bacelorette party this weekend. We're all wearing black, but I don't have any black nail polish at the moment. Hmmm

The stamping set is seriously tricky, but SO worth it for french manicures. I mean, really really worth it. I have a pic somewhere of a Christmas manicure I did with Konad... I'll try and find it. :)
What about a colorful ombre look? I dig ombre so hard, I guess I'm biased because I have ombre hair. :D

ETA: This is last week's nail art... white crackle on grey and a teal accent. Ignore the messiness on my ring finger and the big ol' splotch of manic panic on my finger.

How does one do water marbling? I mean without dipping faux nails into the water mixture and then putting them on your finger. Do you just dip your finger into the water mixture?

Just pour the colors you want in a cup of water, swirl it with a toothpick, and dip your finger! :) You have to do it really quickly because the polish will harden on the water within a few seconds. You can coat the skin around your nail with petroleum jelly or something similar so you can just wipe the excess off when the polish dries. It's messy but worth it. :)

I did space nails today!

It was a solid coat of black, stippling of prisma blue/purple and purple/white with a paper towel, and then stippling of silver and blue sparkles.

I LOVE my konad....
I also love those sally hansen nail decals... I've tried other brands and haven't been very happy with them, but the sally hansen ones are great (a bit pricey) but awesome.... however I've seen lots of people struggle with them.
I don't have any pictures... but I might have to start taking some. But because my work is so hard on my nails, they last all of the day I do them... before they chip.

If you get a chance, will you post some pics of the Sally Hansen decals? I almost bought some Valentine's Day designs but couldn't make myself spend that much money without knowing if they work. :P

Thanks for the link! :D Is it very hard to do the water marbling?
-
I can only apply nailpolishb to my left hand. Whenever i try to do the right, it looks like a 2 yr old trying to color inside the lines

Nothing ground breaking, but I put on some nail stickers and crystals today to cheer myself up

Awh does flowers are looking really cute! Love the diamants on it!
-
Sorry about bringing up a slightly old thread but do you think those konad plates would work with paint to put patterns on a pony?
-
I think I remember someone did it with some hearts symbols. It worked very well and the details were amazing! No idea if that person used regular paint or konad products. I only remember red hearts >.<
-
I love looking at nail art, but how do you get such tiny designs and great pictures on your nails if you don't have one of those kits? My nails are never long enough, but if I ever get them long I want them to look as good as the ones I seen here.
my favorite color is the Sinful Daisy the Pig- its a gorgeous deep green
-
Good news for cheap-os like me! The matte top coat trend has spread its way into NYC's cosmetic line. Matte finish for less than $2. I say yes! :)
Psivampyr: from what I can tell special equipment is used like the konad plates. Stickers. Or people paint on them using nail brushes. You can buy kits on ebay for less than $5, but then you have to have to skill to wield them to get the same results.
Aaand you can find nail polishes with longer brushes, etc at the store that are supposed to help you make more detailed designs as well. Generally they are more expensive.
