Title: Gamers... Do you play for the trophies/achievements?
Post by: mercynova on January 25, 2012, 09:58:06 AM
I'm seeing what the general consensus is... I guess it only applies to you if you play 360 or PS3 though. For me... If I know a game doesn't have trophies, I wont even pick it up. I have some brilliant games that I bought back before trophies were introduced like Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles and Assassin's Creed. I loved them at the time but I'll never pick them up again because I don't see the point any more. To me, nothing is more fun than playing a game to it's absolute fullest and getting a platinum trophy on it (a trophy that says you've gotten all the other ones). Since all new games come with trophies now this doesn't massively constrict which games I can play... it just means that I'll spend a long time on them and I'll do repetitive stuff to complete them which some people would find really boring.

Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Well, achievements aren't the end all for me in a game, but I love getting them.  Me and my friend spend most of our time on WoW getting achievements and other things like that.  It makes the games more interesting if they have that added element!

Nope.

This is all imho--Im not sure what it is, but the boys will bend over backwards to unlock an achievement.  I just fail to see what the real point is, besides bragging rights (which..most males I know will do).

I play something because its hooklined me (through plot/storyline or its from a series I like), not for a trophy.  Though I will admit I do try to do sidequests to get extra things in game to make things easier for me in the end. Usually its something that I can use though, like getting another empty bottle to put stuff in, or a bigger money bag^^

I don't play specifically FOR the achievements...but I do love them!  Sometimes it helps me decide what I want to play.  I'll play something on my xBox instead of playing Alice on the PS3 because I never set a profile up on my husband's console...so HE gets the trophies if I play Alice, but I get them on my own profile if I play my xBox, haha!

I don't play for achievements, not at all. I play for quality storyline and strong gameplay. I suppose once I finish the game I'll try to get some achievements, but I can never get all of them if I tried! XD

Nah. I just play because it's fun. When it's not fun anymore, I stop.

I play for fun, and on games I end up really falling in love with like Fable II I'll attempt to get all the trophies!

This. Some of them offer nice challenges but just doing them for the sake of it, meh. I have a PS3 but I play more Super NES games than anything ^^ Achievements and trophies don't matter to me in the slightest.

Also applies to people who use Steam on their PCs :P

I don't really understand it... it seems just a bragging rights thing.

No. I actively dislike achievements. I see them as obligations that often times tell me I'm not playing well enough. I'm really into Borderlands, and there are oodles of achievements, most of them involve really arbitrary things. One of them involves getting headshots. The last headshot achievement is, I think, 25,000 headshots. Because of this, if I'm not killing mobs with headshots, I feel like I'm doing something wrong. It's so annoying.

I really dislike achievements that obligate me to play a certain way. As much as I try to play games my own way, the achievements are in the back of my head.

I'll play for trophies, but won't go out of my way.  Most of the time they're a surprise an I have no idea what I did to get them.  "Hooray!  I got the poacher trophy...and I've been killing a lot of wolves and bears so, maybe...  Wait, why didn't it show up while I was wandering through town?"

I put a lot of energy into my WoW chievo hunting.
Also on Plants vs Zombies. But when it comes to other games, like portal, Skyrim and such (I don't play much besides WoW)... trophies are nice. BUt I don't play for trophies.

Nah. If ever I get one, I'll be happy and feel good, but since I play on my boyfriends account I don't really care. He plays some games for them but is not too serious. He's is a bit whatever. His best friend on the other hand plays only for the trophies. He's ranked number one in Europe, has no job and play for hours everyday. You can be at his place an entire afternoon/evening watching him play the same segment again and again and again til he succeed. Pretty tiresome at some points. I don't even think  he think it's fun. He just do it because it's the only thing he can do.

Nope.  I play to be playing the game and to be entertained.  I honestly think they're kind of annoying, popping up all the time like that.

^this! I usually have as much fun yelling at the television and the console and the controller for purposefully "killing me" as I do with the game.....hmmmm.....I may have some anger management issues I need to think through....

Besides Skyrim I play mostly NES games. I make my own goals to keep myself entertained. I have timed Zelda runs. I also do runs of Super Mario Bros as nothing but small Mario. Trying to beat Adventure Island II on one guy is still escaping me. One day I will get there.

They're certainly not a criteria by which I choose games, I pick them for their game play and story.
Nor do I like really take to collecting them unless really consider the process fun.

I do however like collecting extra's (provided that the process to get at them seems fun to me.)
I like collecting concept art or music tracks to listen too, or even bits of world building trivia.
But once again that doesn't have to be in a game for me to enjoy it, I just see it as a fun extra if it's there.

Nah. I just play because it's fun. When it's not fun anymore, I stop.

I admit I'm prone to the same thing. >>
My target is usually the in game characters, either when whatever game hero I playing with doesn't do what I told them to in my opinion.
"I TOLD you to jump darn it, why didn't you jump?!"
Or at whatever enemy is currently doing something I don't like.
"Did you, did you just knock out my favorite team member?! OH. IT. IS. ON!"

Well if a game has achievements I'll try and get them all because I'm a completionist but I don't really care about them otherwise. I already spend a ridiculous amount of time on games level grinding and stuff anyway.

Not all the games I play have trophies... but they will show what you've got/unlocked, and I gotta DO IT ALL!  Yeah.  For example, Zelda... gotta find all the heart pieces, bugs, bottles, sidequests, etc.  Mario games... not much in that way... but the mario kart game I need to place first in every race, when playing myself.

I've mostly been going for achievements on my main WoW character lately cus there's not a lot else to do since raiding etc would be impossible on this computer. Damn thing lags out on 5 man dungeons :P
Otherwise, they're not my main aims unless it gives me some fun game content

Lol, well I stick to Nintendo titles, so no achievements/trophies for me!  I never understood why someone wanted a virtual trophy.  I play just for fun, which is prbly why I have a lot of half finished games laying around. XD

Ahh, the days when "Nintendo Hard" was a valid phrase! I once made it all the way to the final level of Adventure Island II...then lost my last life. I haven't touched the game since, and that was somewhere around twenty years ago. I'm finally starting to want to play again. XD Good luck to you, because anyone who's playing oldschool NES/SNES games needs it! (Someday, I'll be brave enough to try classic Castlevania....)

I was so happy when Minecraft (the only video game I play) added achievements. I love achievements. I won't break my back over them, but they're fun goals for me. However the ones on Minecraft are BAD. Or, more correctly, the system is bad. The achievements reset constantly so its really just sad. ):

Oooh Castlevania, one of the few games I gave up on. The jump controls drove me mad. >>

I generally play because I want too but I don't go out of my way for achievements if they're say time trials or something that would be against how I'd normally play a game (say in an RPG they have a 'side with opposing faction' achievement or 'do something evil' chances are I won't do it). Sometimes I do try to get achievments but I generally prefer just playing and seeing what pops up.

I love to play games no matter what, but it makes it doubly fun for me with achievements. :D

Depends on the game, but like for example I play Team Fortress 2 and Portal and Portal 2, so I enjoy those games and am happy when I get achievements. x3

I don't play JUST for the achievements but it sure is nice to see some accomplishment within a game.  Its especially nice with games that have a great re-play value.  Like with Gears of War 3... I can't tell you how many times I have played through the campaign but having those achievements to work towards makes it just a little bit sweeter... like beating the campaign on Insane as opposed to just Casual or Normal... its a nice achievement for myself to be able to say, "Hey, you know what... I am improving my game play ability."  And then to have that actual achievement pop up on the screen... its really a nice feeling.  Of course, I do also go through and get as many achievements as possible in a game as long as its a game I enjoy playing.  I do love seeing my gamer score getting larger... I remember I was so excited when I first hit 1000 gamer score.  I have a LOT more than that now but I like seeing what I have achieved with my online friends.  Achievements are fun!

Not so much a straightjacket, but maybe a Game Genie. ;) :silly:  That game drove me insane.  My Grandma was always better at it than me.  (Yes, my 71 year old grandma loves to play old NES games)

well. My roomie is an absolute sucker for 100% achivements. She plays FF's and all those epic length RPGs and others till she has seen everything there is to see, all 100lvl, every weapon to get and etc. Now that there is trophies she plays them as well. She CAN'T sell her game till she finishes (sept God of War III that we bouth hated but only I played. She did not tutch it)(Sorry GoW fans)  So far she only got Sengoku BASARA 3 as 100% She is working on DW and Ninja gaiden Z right now.
(she owns PSP, DS, PS3 and PS2. She plays my Wii)

As for me..
I guess I'm same. Im not too much in to this "perfect gaming" but those trophies make me get them. It is somewhat frustraiting and disturbing to see some of those games saved on PS3 is not 100%(aka all throphies collected). Im usually content when I have seen the events and gone trough the game. gives more to play in the next time.
(I own PSP, Ds and Wii. My PS2 just broke.)(I play her PS3 and PS2)

If it's a game that I GENUINELY ENJOY, yes. I am an ahchievement hoarder. If its a "meh" game not so much. Just wondering, My gamerscore just hit about10100...Is that low for a pretty casual gamer or is that pretty good for someone who doesn't constantly shoot ppl in the face over xbox live? XD

Just wondering, My gamerscore just hit about10100...Is that low for a pretty casual gamer or is that pretty good for someone who doesn't constantly shoot ppl in the face over xbox live? XD

See, that's the funny thing about Xbox live gamers. In Battlefield and MW3 and Halo, I run into these hardcore gamers that are super good at the game and pawn me everytime... But their gamerscore is only a couple thousand. Why is that?  Because they ONLY play Halo or they ONLY play CoD games. They consider themselves to be much more than a casual gamer yet they only have the gamerscore showing for a couple games because they can't get into other games.

As for myself, my gamerscore is 12,700 something. I did that in this past year. Did I 100% every game? No way. Am I a casual gamer? Heck no.  I just play a lot of games. Particularly shooters haha. So Bunny-san, to answer your question, 10,100 is a great gamerscore regardless of what you consider your gaming habits to be!  I was so thrilled when I hit 10k gamerscore. To me, I would look at your gamerscore and say "hey, that chica is a gamer!  Rock on!  It's not often I run across another girl with a higher gamerscore."
