I love to sew, though I usually do smaller projects. This is because I am afraid of sewing machines. Or they don't work when I get the courage to try. I'd like to try doing some bigger projects. So does anyone have any suggestions or alternatives?

I use stitch witch! I like it and it saves me sewing! I have shaky hands!

Not a clue. I hand stitch everything.

I've never heard of Stitch Witch. Looks interesting, I'll have to look into it more.
All my sewing is by hand too. I just know it would be easier to use a sewing machine. Well for the bigger stuff.

all the sewing machines ive tryed to use have never worked i find hand stitching best but i really want to make some clothes so need a working new shiny sewing machine i wouldnt have a clue about alternatives sorry

Oh my goodness, sewing machines are the way to go! I just sewed armrests for the hubby's computer chair and they took over 3 hours to finish because I did it all by hand (I don't own a sewing maching, unfortunately). I could have done them in less than an hour if I'd had a machine. A pattern might have helped too, of course, but where's the adventure!
You could try quilting. It takes a long time to put a patchwork together by hand, but it is really relaxing and sooooo rewarding! :)
I have to ask, because I'm deathly curious. Why are you afraid to use a sewing machine?

there are those small hand held stitching gadgets, but they really don't work very well. I can't sew by hand (no mater how hard I try I can't get it to look right) Like you everytime I tried to use a sewing machine it would never work right... they were usually older second hand machines that where a nightmare to thread and try to adjust the tension and just didn't work right. So I gave up trying to sew. Until I tried the brand new sewing machine I just bought my mom for christmas... that thing is so user friendly! As are most newer machines. And even has an automatic needle threader so you don't have to put your fingers near the needle! (that always made me nervous)
I second the quilting idea. they're a larger project and where traditionally sewn by hand. :)
