G1 Sparkle Ponies with 'melted' insides?
« on: April 26, 2012, 05:51:02 AM »
Hi everypony :]
Have any of you ever encountered G1 Sparkle Ponies (or Glow n Shows) with uneven plastic inside their bodies? I've got the whole set of store Sparkle Ponies (and a couple of duplicates) but I've never seen this on a G1 before today. My M/O Star Hopper is normal too.
I've just received a cute Sparkle Baby North Star and M/O Sky Rocket, and they have strange, uneven 'melted'-looking insides. I've seen this plenty of times on G3 Divine Shine ponies (I even actively collect them) but never on a G1. Is it a normal occurance from the ponies' production or have they been stored poorly at some point? (I wouldn't think so, since their outsides are fine). I always thought that Divine Shines were made from a different material from Sparkle ponies (because they get tacky) and that the 'melted' appearance was exclusive to them.
I kind of like how the light reflects on my 'melted' ponies so I doubt I'd try to fix them even if it was possible, but I like the rest of my ponies the way they are too. Do I need to be extra careful with these ponies? I already keep them all away from radiators and direct sunlight, but is there a particular temperature these ponies have to be kept at? Could my 'melted' ponies have obtained their appearance from being boiled?
I'd really like to know how this happens.
I'm going to go and examine my five Glow n Shows (if I can reach them).
Oh, I should probably mention that although 'melted' G3s tend to 'lose' their glitter somehow, my G1s haven't.

Do you mean that they are not "smooth" on the inside...and some parts of the plastic have little raised patches?

It's kind of like... if you had some extra plastic in liquid form and poured it into your pony, closed up your pony and shook it about... then left it on its side to dry. it's pretty weird, i'll try to take pics.
also, i've checked my Glow n Shows. Happy and Star Glow are kind of more cloudy/opaque than the rest, and they seem a bit 'melty' although not as much as my new Sparkles. My more transparent Glow n Shows don't seem to be 'melty'. I don't know if that's relevant or not...

I *think* I know what you mean...but pics may persuade me otherwise  :P

If its kind of like melted plastic has dripped/run and then formed a raised surface...its not super common but I have seen that inside a few pony bodies over the years...its probably just going to be a manufacturing thing when they come out of the mould.

Hmm..interesting.  I can not say that I have ever noticed unevenness inside.   But I have seen them get cloudy in appearance though.

I often wondered what caused that?

I can't get PhotoBucket to obey me :P Hopefully if I link yous that'll work... hopefully that's allowed?
Here goes:

I'm not sure what causes the cloudiness thing either, maybe just age?
It could be just dripping plastic at the factory stage (and I think it probably is) but because of the Divine Shines I'm not certain... with the G3s it's more like deterioration. I'll see if I can take pics of them too.

I've noticed some sparkle ponies are uneven on the insides. I also have noticed that some do look cloudy as well, but once they are wet inside from washing it clears right up. (Makes you wanna spray the insides with a clear coat to see if they'll continue to stay clearer looking...)

It's cool that glow n shows have bubbles in their plastic! I also have noticed that some have the thicker patches/runs in their plastic as well.

This happens with a lot of ponies, actually, you just don't notice it so much on ponies that are opaque, but if you open ponies up you can sometimes see these little "drips" of plastic. It's just to do with the way the material is put in the molds.

Display side comparison of a normal Flower Garland and a deteriorated one. It hasn't really shown up in the pic but they are really different in colour... the one with glitter loss is almost flesh-coloured. http://s1262.photobucket.com/albums/ii606/candy_bang/?action=view&current=IMG_0319.jpg

Kind of difficult to see, but this is supposed to be a 'melted' leg http://s1262.photobucket.com/albums/ii606/candy_bang/?action=view&current=IMG_0319.jpg#!oZZ1QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs1262.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii606%2Fcandy_bang%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DIMG_0322.jpg

Is it just the way the plastic was put in the moulds for the G1s, or for all the transparent ponies? With transparent G3s the runs tend to be accompanied by extreme glitter loss and colour-change, whereas Sky Rocket and North Star aren't discoloured, opaque or suffering glitter loss.

Oh cool, I only wash the inside of ponies that already have broken neck seals or need rehaired/have tail rust. I might open Happy and Star Glow up and see if cleaning them makes them clearer. Although... the cloudiness doesn't really bother me. I'll see how much it starts to bug me :P
Yeah! Although I don't know why only my Glow and Shows have lots of bubbles and my glittery ponies hardly any. Maybe the stars and hearts made it easier for air to get trapped in the plastic?

Lots of G1 sparkle ponies just seem to get yellowish over time...
I never realized that g3's lost that much glitter.
Looks as if each gen mutates differently over time.
Interesting observation Candy_Bang!

I opened up a bunny hop over the weekend, there was so much extra plastic in her that she had a drip that came out of her front leg (that I could pull out-I need to take a pic of it, it's odd).

candy_bang, what you have is one of those uk glitterless divine shine ponies :) I don't think that has anything to do with the melting though. The melting is probably just how they came out of the mold in production.

I have seen Secret Wish and Flower Garland in this version, almost glitterless and slightly different plastic than the normal ones. All of them originated from the uk. There was some talk about this on an other board, the uk fair forum I think? Someone on there had had hers since buying it in store and she said it was like that right from the start, so technically they do not lose glitter, it seems they were made like that for some reason....

Whoa those are some crazy pictures!! Thank you for taking them for us.

I'm thankful my G1 Sparkle Ponies from childhood do not look like they have melted lol. Never seen that before!

My G3 Divine Shines are completely full of glitter and have not deteriorated. Thanks for the info, tootie_tails! I didn't realize there was UK variants for Divine Shine!

I've seen little bits of it in my Sparkles, but nothing like Star Hopper's leg there. That's so cool! It looks like those colored glass balls that old ladies hang in their gardens ("witch balls," apparently).

Agreeing with others that it's a production thing, not a melting thing.
