Pony Corral / MLP:FiM Season 9, Episode 18 - "She Talks To Angel"
« on: September 05, 2019, 08:30:21 PM »
Spoiler
It's about time we finally got a body swap episode (unless if you count "A Royal Problem"). I'm willing to call Fluttershy in Angel's body "FlutterBunny", and Angel in Fluttershy's body "AngelShy".

I liked this episode for the most part, so I'll just get the negatives out of the way first. I still find it a little weird that while in the sanctuary the predators aren't allowed to eat prey. Makes me wonder if animals would be willing to do damage to their health in order to stay in this haven. And the giraffe still sticks out like a sore thumb (or neck).

Also I would have liked to see AngelShy interact with the other ponies. Missed opportunity in both character development and comedy.

Now I've heard someone point out that Zecora was being careless in this episode as her body swap idea caused a lot of danger to both FlutterBunny and the animals at the sanctuary. But, keep in mind that she was intending for Fluttershy and Angel to be at home and not needing to do stuff first before taking the potions. That said, I wonder if she knew they had already switched bodies when FlutterBunny came to her hut and was nearly killed by an eagle. If she did, then she should have escorted her back.

The rest of the episode I thought was entertaining enough, and does shed a little bit of light on why Angel is such a needy little brat. And I absolutely love how Andrea Libman was able to subtly change the mannerisms in her Fluttershy voice without giving it up completely. That's hard to do.

That line about "wanting to marry Discord" though.  :|  I'm willing to believe this was just AngelShy taking a jab at Fluttershy and her friendship with Discord. But, yeah, one could imagine.

Last thing I want to mention was the scene between Antoine the python and Muriel the baby elephant.
When AngelShy gave Antoine's cookies to the fire lizard and he slithered away menacingly, I was like "No way...they're not going to show that...not in MLP..."

Yeah, that freaked me out a little bit.

In the end, a pretty good episode. Nothing fantastic, but a fairly solid one.

Oh, man. A lot of these EqG musical shorts have been so good!
Fluttershy's song here is so soothing and groovy.  ^.^

And the "5 to 9" song is super catchy.  :)

Good to see Hasbro acknowledge the connection between Fluttershy and Glory.  :satisfied:
And can I just say I love the monster cthulhu costume?

Someone needs to make a cosplay out of this. It's both adorable and cool at the same time.

I guess I have crap taste because I had fun with this episode.
Spoiler
I don't think it's as impactful as "Frenemies", but did enjoy all the developments that have occurred on both the heroes' and villains' sides. I guess I just like to see stuff happening as opposed to a smaller episode with lots of character interaction and development.   :lookround:

That said, Twilight's "character growth" is rather abrupt, especially coming right after A Trivial Pursuit. Maybe that was the one freakout too many that finally snapped her out of it?

Now I want to point out this scene for two reasons.

One, I love how Tirek's horned shadow lines up with Cozy Glow like that. Nicely done.   ^.^
Two, did that guard just not tell anyone he was attacked by the evil trio? Did they kidnap him? Did Chrysalis find a way to convince him he was just imagining things? This needs answering.

On a similar note, is nopony aware of Cozy Glow and her past crimes?

I know she's supposed to be imprisoned, but surely news and such would have spread across Equestria about who caused the world to lose its magic.

I'm totally with Applejack. Her friends just do not learn.   >_<

Though, given recent past experiences with Twilight, it's not too unreasonable.

I was rather surprised they brought up the "unicorn master race" concept like this.

And it only further proves my point that unicorns, despite being the most "powerful" of the three pony types, are the most easily corruptible.

Also, this part made me laugh.

Sorry I don't have too much to say in detail. As I've said earlier, it's not a very deep episode. It's mostly an eventful one.

We will never know what the Shadow was supposed to be.

Probably the people who wrote the episode don't know either.
At the time, I believe the writers just saw that as a classic ending sting that isn't meant to lead anywhere. Kinda like Fluttershy's fang in "Bats".

Why did Sunbrust try to get Twilight disqualified?
Sunburst says he wants to "maintain his correct answer percentage". He cares more about his personal performance than winning the game at all.

I have watched the rest of the episodes, thus I have now fully watched all of FiM.
...Yaaay.  :lookround:
For real, I need to take a breather. I think I overdosed on pony today.  :|

The epilogue was so schmaltzy and sappy...but I loved it.   A show like this kinda deserves a super happy ending.
Though I do need to see it in English (anyone got subs?) because I wasn't entirely sure what Twilight and her friends were crying about. I'm guessing they will rarely get to see her anymore? I guess they all now rule Equestria in their respective domains?

I've also heard that more episodes will be airing this week in Australia.

I could be wrong though.

It's pretty obvious they know of the ship names and decided to incorporate them into the story.

Also I'd like to ask, how would you do this episode differently while still keeping it entertaining?
(Scrapping the episode is not an answer)

Hey, I'll take AppleDash over RariJack any day. That said, it was frustrating to see Applejack get duped so easily yet again (and by Rainbow Dash on top of that).  -_-

Anyway, this episode was purely made for the lols, obviously. In fact, now that Zapper has pointed it out, I am to believe this episode was meant to be the "swan song" of Twilight's psychotic freak-outs; an opportunity for the writers to have fun with her disturbed mind one last time.
Personally, I had fun with this episode. It has its share of frustrations (like the one I mentioned at the start), but the entertainment value does help make it easier to swallow for me.

Now while I can understand the annoyance with the "winning doesn't matter" moral, keep in mind that there isn't anything to gain with Twilight winning this game three times in a row. There's no award to prize or what have you. Really, it's just personal pride and nothing else. Have we ever had a competition in this show that had high stakes and still kept to the "winning isn't everything" message?

As for those who think Twilight should be past this by now, you do have a point, but even the most calm, level-headed people can be triggered.
Don't believe me? Watch me play Splatoon. You will witness my explosive fury.  :enraged:

I think it's charming in a weird way.   :lookround:
I like this different voice for her. She sounds so chipper and squeaky like a child.
The animation is pretty cute and zany, though the shots with her dancing around with her head in place is off-putting.
Also Gummy...why are his pupils so enlarged?

Pony Corral / MLP:FiM Season 9, Episode 15 - "2, 4, 6, Greaaat"
« on: August 19, 2019, 12:09:27 AM »
I like that we skipped 2 4 6 Great. I had a whole rant ready to post, but I think just not acknowledging it whatsoever is better.
Yeah, I was going to do this sooner, but I got a bad case of procrastination.

Anywho, the title could easily be read in a sarcastic tone, and that's very fitting as this episode is not a pleasant watch at all. If you wanted more reason to dislike Rainbow Dash, you've gotten a lot more.
I am trying to see it from her perspective; that it would be frustrating to be pulled aside to be part of something you don't care for when something you love is going on next door. But unfortunately this throws quite a bit of continuity and character development right out the window. At the same time though, has Rainbow ever really had any solid growth in her character lately? I hear a lot of people say that this isn't what she's normally like and that it's out of character. But, is it really? She's been a self-centered jerk numerous times, so it's hard to say.

I'm baffled we got two Buckball episodes this seasons, and I still see the sport as nothing but glorified pony pong.  XP
This is also probably the most focus we've had on Snips probably season 1. And you know it's embarrassing when Snips is the reasonable one compared to their coach.
I'm still not a big fan of Smolder, but I can appreciate her seeing right through Dash's bull-putty.
Twilight pulling a Celestia at the end is a little amusing. Even she knows that Rainbow Dash is a bratty child at heart that refuses to grow up.  :P
It's a little off-putting that Celestia's magic school students who were kind of at a disadvantage still won at the end.
Lastly, on a similar note, is everypony just deathly afraid of balls?

Overall, unimpressive and rather mean-spirited episode, not even very entertaining unlike the next episode.

But bronies love Quibble and Cheese Sandwich.  We got to cater to them in the farewell season.
I'm willing to bet a lot of kids loved these two characters, especially Cheese.

Pony Corral / MLP:FiM Season 9, Episode 14 - "The Last Laugh"
« on: August 09, 2019, 11:33:09 PM »
Well, we're at FiM's final stretch now.
Judging by both my opinions and those of others, this episode is almost unanimously seen as "okay".
It's not great, but it's not awful either.
It is nice to see Cheese Sandwich again. Weird Al is just a gem.
Even Sans Smirk I kinda liked. He may be cold and calculated, but he is caring and supportive.
I did like how they explored some of the aspects of comedy, particularly with the fact that there are people that have a hard time laughing unless others around them are laughing. A bit like myself actually.  :|
Some of the jokes, while not really making me burst out in laughter, were pretty clever in their own right; like the banana peel that slips into you.
All that said, I get the feeling many have the same issue they did with "Applejack's Day Off", where most of the episode is rather underwhelming. Though I think it works better here since that is the point of the story.
Also I wasn't fully onboard with Pinkie needing to find her "life's purpose". It felt a bit forced, like they only included it because fans have been asking what her goal is. Also, wow, way to throw shade at AJ like that.  >_<
Personally, I don't think a character needs a life goal in order to be interesting. It depends on the kind of story you're telling.
Lastly, the song was nice...on it's own. But it sounds too similar to the songs we got in Pinkie Pride.

All in all, it was alright. Take it or leave it.

Several years back I did make a Mane 6 of G1 ponies for a series of stories.

-Wind Whistler: Our logical leader.
-Fizzy: Her flighty and ever optimistic friend.
-Gusty: The bruiser of the group always looking for a fight.
-Shady: The shy worrier who wishes she could do more but afraid of doing it.
-Flutterbye: The often shallow and vane one who regardless fights the good fight.
-Tootsie: The "big guy" of the group who is the strongest (even if Gusty disagrees) and love life but has trouble with Spoonerisms.

It was a really weird storyline.  The ponies discover an ancient Decepticon ground bridge had been tied into the rainbow.  They can use it to travel across their own world and to Megan's ranch specifically in ours so non-Pegasi can visit.  King Charlatan's freeze the world plan leads to the cold war between the Ice Orcs and Lava Demons to flare into open conflict.  The coming of Tambelon sparks a magic arms race.
Yeah, I remember those days.   ^.^

I think the original ponies from the Midnight Castle special would be the most popular though.
Firefly, Bow Tie, Glory, Applejack, Twilight, Moondancer, etc...?
