Title: Diamond painting thread 2.0
Post by: Ponyfan on April 30, 2023, 06:50:36 AM
Hi,
I thought I'd start a new thread for discussing diamond panting since the old one was closed and I've seen a few people mention it in BC's interviews.

I just started my 7th diamond panting the other day. :D It takes me quite a while to do them because I don't get to work on them every day. I also have a small diamond art panting that I bought at Walmart that I've been working on too.

My current project is my first Diamond Art Club canvas. I've already noticed some differences between it and the ones I usually do from Diamond Dots/Leisure Arts.

I'm having a little trouble getting used to using the right amount of wax on the diamonds with the shiny stuff on them.  I used too much at first and some of the way came off on the diamonds.  I think I finally figured it out though.

Feel free to share pictures and talk about your current projects. :D

I'd love to see pics! I've looked at these and they seem interesting, but I don't have the time or space for another hobby right now.

Diamond painting is fun! :)

I'm a beginner and started the first one just before Christmas and it's still a work in progress! :haha:  It has Christmas colors and has a cat with a hat and a scarf. Maybe I'll be inspired to continue it again closer to Christmas.

I also have another one, which I haven't started yet. It is blue in color and also has a cat as a theme.

The only thing I hate about this is that I often manage to spill the little jar that came with these upside down on the floor. (The one from which it is easier to take diamonds than from a plastic bag.)  >_<

It would be great to see pictures of your diamond paintings Ponyfan!  :lovey:

I have taken a break, kind of. I had orderded a bunch of paintings of photos of me, my husband and our cats and they all turned out beautiful. But the last one was a weddingpicture of me and John, and John who is a very pale Scandinavian got a skintone resembling someone from northern Africa.. so I emailed the provider, they sent out another one they had lighten up and now John is orange instead  >_<. I've been going the last couple of months and thinking if I should scrap them alltogether or finnished them. If I finnish them, they wont go up on the wall as they're just so wrong. But on the other hand, I get to do something.

Anyway, here are some pictures of some I've done :).

This is a photo of my mother-in-laws cat Mysan aka Katastrofen (cathastrophee). It took me almost a month to do.

This one is dear to me. Last year while grandma was dying, grandpa layed next to her and my aunt snapped a picture of them holding hands and she shared it. So I took it, ordered two of it and made my mom and aunt a surprise.

And a framed weddingpicture of me and John. This one came in the same package as the one who went wrong and I can't get how they could mess up the other one so bad because this one was perfect! A bit of mirroring as it's framed.

Wow! Those are really nice, Beldarna. :)  I've heard of some companies being able to make custom diamond paintings from photos, but I don't think there are a lot of companies in the US that do them.  I'm sorry that the company messed up on one of your wedding paintings. The one you posted is stunning. :lovey:

Thank you Heart of Midnight.  :)

Hobby Lobby is having a sale on diamond painting kits this week in the US.

I thought everyone might enjoy seeing how I store the diamonds while I'm working on a project and after the project's finished.

While I'm working, I store them in plastic bags.

When I'm finished, I store the extra dots like this with the color code taped to the top of the container.  If I already have a container for that color, I just put the dots inside.

Thank you Ponyfan and Heart of Midnight  ^.^.

There are at least three companies here in Sweden who make custom pieces. You order by them but they're done in China, shipped to the Netherlands where they're repackaged and sent to you. No custom fees involved. It takes up to six weeks from ordering to recieving and most of time they're accurate and gorgeous. They're a bit pricey, but so is collecting ponies sometimes .

That is a smart way of package the beeds Ponyfan. I have them in small zipblocks bags as well. I decided after a few turns to throw away the ones not needed anymore instead of storing them. I began storing, but saw how the same number could have three different shades of the same colour  and didn't want them mix up.

WOW Beldarna, those custom ones are stunning! They did a great job making them look photorealistic. I’ve looked into the custom ones before, but the one company I saw that does them in the US was pretty pricey, so I’ve passed for now.

Ponyfan, your look great! I love all the Disney! I like seeing your storage too. I’m not very organized with my diamond painting. I’ll have to get some pics of the ones I’ve completed! I did a couple during the pandemic, then I kind of just stopped for a couple years. Then for my birthday this year my mom got me a MLP one from Amazon and I’m hooked again! :P

I joined a diamond painting group on Facebook.  I thought it would be fun to join a group that would show off their work with others.  Although several people have done that, I've also seen people being very rude to each other over asking questions that people that are new to the hobby probably ask a lot and also a bit of arguing over where the "best" place to get diamond art is.  I don't have a lot of extra money so I usually buy mine when they are on sale.  That being said I'm not the type of person to berate another just because they chose to use a different site to buy from, even if I think that site is a little questionable based on what I've seen so far.

I've only been in the group a few days though.

Also, does anyone here use a light board under your panting while you're working?

Diamond Art Club restocked a painting that I've been wanting to get for months, but I have so many projects already that I haven't even started yet.

Always trust your instincts. If you think the site feels sketchy, don't use it. Maybe you can find the same paintings somewhere else. Have you tried Etsy? They have great patterns and kits. I don't do Diamond painting but I've run across it looking for cross stitch kits.

I too have too many projects. If you really want, I say get it. Maybe it will inspire you to work on other projects so you can work on that one :)

Thanks BC.  I didn't think of looking on Etsy.  I'll probably order the painting that I want from Diamond Art Club too.

I tried to join another diamond painting group on Facebook and yesterday the group page said my request was pending.  Today it's gone back to "join."  I answered all of the questions that were required, but now that it says "join" I wonder if my request to join the group was rejected because I didn't have enough of a certain brand of diamond art painting. One of the questions was how many of them do you own.  I thought that question was being asked just to make sure that the people trying to join the group actually have the brand the group talks about.  I buy a lot of my diamond art paintings at Hobby Lobby so I have a few different brands in my projects stash.   I'm not sure I want to be in a group anyway if you're not accepted because you don't have the "right kind" of diamond art.

Has anyone ordered from Dreamer Designs before?

Sorry the Facebook groups are proving to be such a struggle Ponyfan! I didn’t realize there was so much uh….elitism around these Diamond painting kits. That’s crazy! I say just buy what you enjoy! Most kits are pretty good quality imo, the only bad sets are the ones I’ve tried from Amazon.

I think you should spring for the light box too! :) I know my eyes can start to hurt after a while working on these, so I do think that would help.

These are the first two kits I ever did! Extra image of the wolf and sheep on to show the size. That one was HUGE! It took me a few months to finish. It was my pandemic project a few years back. I’d love to get it framed someday, but the size alone makes it very expensive.

This is one of my Amazon ones

I mean, it’s okay, but the gradient in the sky is soooo clunky that it bugs me. That big white patch at the bottom has like, three different colors in it if you can believe it, but I personally don’t see any difference in the gems.

I got a pony one from Amazon for my birthday too. I thought I had a pic of it, but I guess I don’t, I’ll have to take one. I ended up doing a lot of my own design on that one because I didn’t like how it was turning out. I think I’m most proud of that since I “fixed” it lol!

Ooh, those are beautiful! I can actually see the different white ones in the last pic, but i agree the sky blending isn't very good.

Ponyfan, I did a quick search on Etsy and there are tons of really cool kits :)

Minty_Magic, wow those are AMAZING! It's so fun doing the big ones isn't it? I need to order new ones so I'm set for autumn.

Ponyfan, that is so strange. I guess there are elitists and gatekeepers in every community.. Why not just let people enjoy it on their own terms. It's Diamond Painting, not brainsurgery.

Thank you everyone.  I agree that diamond painting should be fun and everyone should be able to enjoy it as they want. :D   There was more drama in one of the Facebook diamond painting group chats as someone decided to take a comment to keep things in line the wrong way and decided it was a personal attack against them. This led to the person verbally attacking others and when they were asked again to stop, they escalated the situation even further.

Miny Magic, your diamond paintings look great. :D  Wolf and Sheep is huge.  On my computer I see 2 colors in the white at the bottom.

I've been looking at some kits on Esty and Amazon.  I also want to order a few from Diamond Art Club as they have a pretty deal for first time customers.

Here's a pic of some of my diamond painting kits.  I have more , but these are the ones I could get to easily and take a picture of.  My mom sometimes picks out kits and asks me to do them for her, like the one in the black box you see in the pic.   Don't let the prices you see get to you.  I bought most of these when they were on sale. so I paid less than the  price you might see on the box.

I'll have to look at getting a light board.

Thank you BC.  :)

I did order from Diamond Art Club.  There were a couple of things on the website that were a little confusing, but it's probably from someone not double checking that all of the pages on the site are up to date.  For example. in the FAQs it's stated that all of the orders ship from one state.  On my order confirmation page (I had to double check) another state was listed.  The state on the confirmation page matches where I got the shipping notice from.  It also said I would get an email from DAC when my order shipped, but I also got one from the shipper.

I decided not to contiune with the replacement I got of me and John.. In the first we got he had very dark skin, so I made a complaint and got sent a replacement instead.. which made us orange.. I decided I prefered my husband in dark skin rather than orange.. please note the pics are a bit washed out.. they are darker and more colourful in real life.

Yes, there are more details in the darker one as well. I sent an order for six pieces. They hade a 50% discount so I splurged a bit .

While waiting I just finnished this one. I bought it from a crafts store last year.. or the year before that. The beads are round and uneven, so it's been a bit of puzzling to make it fit. But now it's done and it became alright :).

I like the flowers.  :D

I've been wanting to get back to diamond painting for weeks, but since I am recovering from my medical procedure, I've been wary of doing it.  I usually do diamond painting on the kitchen table and there's some stretching and leaning over involved

I bought a couple of small projects from Walmart last week.

There's a shop on Etsy that sells mainly cross stitch, but they also have diamond kits. I saw a pattern and loved it and thought it was cross stitch kit but it was a diamond painting kit. I'm thinking of getting it. I don't really need a new crafty hobby, but I love the pattern so much.

I tried to diamond paint a few weeks ago and didn't enjoy it all.  It's easy to forget sometimes that I'm still recovering from surgery and still need to take it easy.  I want to try again though and hopefully it will be more fun this time. Maybe my expectations were too high because I was really looking forward to it.

We went to Hobby Lobby today and there was a big sign that said Christmas stuff was 50% 0ff.  Mom and I saw 2 diamond paintings that we wanted and mom went to the checkout to buy them.  When they rang them up, the employees wouldn't honor the 50% off because they said they weren't considered Christmas items even though they were signed as such and they were a picture of a Christmas tree and a reindeer with Christmas ornaments on its antlers.  The employees argued with my mom that they were 40% off instead of 50% despite the sign.  My mom decided not to get them and we left the store.  We went to another store for a bit and by the time we were ready to leave that store my mom had decided to go back to the first one and complain to the manger about the employees refusing to honor the sign.  The manger apologized and said that the diamond art kits were supposed to be 50%.   The manger let my mom get the kits she wanted for the correct price and even went to the register to find the reindeer one because they didn't have any more of that one on the sales floor.

Congrats on your new diamond art Flitter. :)

I love seeing pics of everyone's projects.

Beldarna, the ones of your kitties are so sweet. That makes me want to get one of mine.

I’m about halfway through the solar system diamond painting I started in late September. My goal is to finish it before Christmas. I’m enjoying my first attempt at diamond painting but I’ll probably want a break from it for a while after finishing the one I’m on.

Great pics and diamond paintings Beldarna.   :D

I've been wanting to  diamond paint, but have been feeling so bad that I haven't felt like getting everything out to work on my current project.

I read that Walmart was stocking small holiday/winter themed diamond paintings for Christmas, but so far I haven't seen them at any of the Walmarts I've checked.

Thank you both ^.^

I ordered two christmas themed paintings from Amazon for Black Friday (In Sweden they've had the sale for about two weeks now. Talk about taking a culture and max it to the extreme). The beads are round. I prefer square but I guess it will have to do. I also ordered a carry case for all the equipments :). We got a free month of Amazon Prime while ordering so I'm catching up on some shows now :).

Here's the diamond paintings Sam's had.  I heard that Costco also has some including the waterfall you see in the picture and 2 others that aren't carried at Sam's.   It's 3 panels that make up one picture.   I didn't buy one, but now I wish I had picked one up.

Here's an in progress pic of my current diamond painting.  It's going slower than I had hoped. There's been several days though when I haven't felt like working on it.

I couldn't seem to get a good pic of it with my phone.  It's a lot brighter in real life.

It's hard getting a good picture of Simba with the picture of himself.. He's not as cooperative as the other two so it's just a sit and wait game. But here it is. My Diamond Paiting of my little Lion Cub

What is that one of, Ponyfan? The waterfall?

I love your kitty paintings, Beldarna. Simba looks so fluffy! :hearts:

I like the pic of Simba with his diamond painting picture.   I love the diamond painting of Simba.  It looks fantastic.

Here's a full pic of the one I'm working on.  I still can't get a good pic of it on my phone. It's much brighter than the picture makes it look.

Only part of the right hand side is started.

I'm thinking about starting a much smaller one to work on while I'm also working on this one.  I usually only do one at a time.

I like the Santa picture.  :)

Here's a pic of some of my/my mom's diamond paintings.  My mom doesn't diamond paint, but sometimes she picks one she likes so I'll do it for her.
The Peace on Earth and cardinals were included in the after Christmas sales at Hobby Lobby.  The snowman was a gift last Christmas.

I found an endcap at Walmart today full of smaller diamond paintings and ended up with these 3.  I don't know if the diamonds cover the whole picture or not, but for $10 each, they're hard to resist.

I'm looking forward to doing the Santa and reindeer eventually.

Thank you.  :D

I thought I posted earlier, but I guess I didn't.... :hmm: I sorted out colors for a new diamond painting.  There were 50 colors total.  I also sorted colors for another small one.  That gives me 4 choices to work on.  I usually don't like to have more than one going at a time unless one is super small. but I feel like it's going to take forever for the Diamond Art Club one I started to get done.

That sounds like a lot! The kits don't have the colors separated already?

I finnished the painting of My Angel Cat Tarzan. This took the first season of Shadow & Bone and half the first episode of the second season, 12 movies, a 4episode documentary of Epstein and a documentary about Ghislaine Maxwell, all eight episodes of I am a Stalker and 11 episodes of I am a Killer to make it. Also around 20 minutes of two movies I realised were to good to just have on in the background so stopped them there. Pheeeww.. How many hours is that? :lookround:

@BC, this how the colors are separated when you open the box.

When I'm getting ready to start a new diamond painting, I cut open each bag along with the color/number code and put them in tiny ziplock bags.  Some bags are included with each kit, but I've been shorted several bags many times.

Oh, I see. It's almost like cross stitch thread. The colors are in bunches but you have to put it in the card and write down the code.

Thanks. Yes, one of each of our cats, my moms cat who passed and my MILs cat. The latter was made a year ago. :)

I used to put my beeds in ziplockbags as well, but now I put them in small containers that came with the carry case. It makes it so much easier :).

Thank you everyone. :)

Dollar Tree is supposed to have some new diamond painting kits in stores.  I checked one the other day and they only had the same ones that were out about a year ago.

I saw some really nice ones on Amazon that I want to get too.
