Sparkle Baby ponies - variant, or seriously discoloured?
« on: March 04, 2013, 01:42:37 PM »
I was poking on eBay (bad habit, I know), and I noticed a Sparkle Baby Gusty - but she's wayyyyy orange!  Orange like Sparkle Baby NorthStar, though maybe more to the brown end of the orange spectrum.  Seller states she's not discoloured.  My question to the experienced ponies here:  is she a variant?  Or is she wildly discoloured?  She doesn't appear to have tail rust going on...

Since we can't post links to active auctions, if you wish to check the image, please search:

Vintage G1 My Little Pony Baby Gusty Sparkle Ponies MLP 1989-1990 Orange

Thanks!  (It's mere curiosity motivating this question; I already have a very cute Sparkle Baby Gusty - who's very brightly yellow - so I couldn't help but wonder. ^.^)

She is really orange, she does look a little brown so I wonder if they had some fun playing with settings or she is really that orange.

I just checked her out on E-bay.
To me she looks discoloured, Sometimes sparkle ponies darken like that. I have several that have. Just like the Glow-n-Show ponies, the colour can vary a lot from batch to batch.

I have seen that too, but man if that happened with this one it must have been something.  Yellow is a totally different color make up then orange.

I have a Firefly that is significantly darker than my other one. It's even throughout her body but definitely discoloration.

If it is, then I would think maybe from a smoking home?  I know nicotine can really affect plastic.

That's the Gusty, Diamond, thanks. ^.^  She really does look brownish, it's what initially got my attention (especially with the bright pink hair!).  If she wasn't so dear, I might even have been tempted to buy her just to see if I could figure what's going on with her... but my curiosity has tighter constraints than what she's going for.

Thank you, everypony, for the input - I've seen how the Glow'n'Shows can vary wildly, and the glittery G3 ponies (my Glitterbelle has so little glitter, she's practically simply translucent!).  But the burnt-orange hue of Gusty was just... weird.

Looks like discolouration or damage to me, though the source could be any number of things.  Damaged sparkle ponies often get that opaque look.

I'm going to guess possibly rusty?  Rust would account for an orange color, though maybe not that evenly.  Then again, I've gotten plenty of ponies with rusty washers where the rust had migrated right up into their nose, mane and ears!  Crazy stuff.

I agree - its discolouration :) Whether that be from something going on inside her, something in the plastic or a combination of that. The Sparkle babies so seem particularly prone to pretty radical colour changes in the plastic - I guess its down to something in the plastic in order to get the transparent, sparkly plastic.
