Title: Help with a sale - being put off? *Update*
Post by: Loa on July 22, 2018, 10:56:57 PM
Hi everyone!
I have a head cold and I'm not quite seeing sense so thought I had better ask for some advice.

I had someone purchase a pony off TradeMe on Saturday (NZ time). The buyer instantly left me feedback saying:
Quote
nice person awesome communication plus really truly appreciate it cheers ??
Within 5 minutes I had a message saying:
Quote
If you don't mind me asking I'll can deposit the money into your bank account this Tuesday coming plus can you do that for me plus it will really help me out cheers

I said that was fine.
Today I get another message saying...
Quote
If you don't mind me asking is it possible that I'll can deposit the money into your bank account on the 2th of August plus I'll hope you can help me out in that way because I'll I'm worried about asking you so if you can I'll really truly would appreciate it from the heart cheers

Which is like 10 days away!

I feel like responding no, but also that the feedback was kinda bribery?

I'd be concerned.

If they ask to deposit more money or send you more money than what you are owed, it's a SCAM.  They'll pay by check, money order or such and get you to refund them the difference via Western Union or in gift cards or something else you won't be able to undo.  Then the check bounces and you're on the line for the entire amount.   Honestly normal strangers don't randomly ask for vague types of help with non-nefarious reasons the vast majority of the time.  The feedback thing feels like they're trying to make you feel indebted.

Block them and steer clear, if you ask me.

Thanks for that, but its pretty unlikely in NZ, we don't really use cheques here!
It's only for $10 + shipping but I'm kinda annoyed ya know?

Well, I'd trust your instincts.  If something feels off, it probably is.

We don't use checks or whatever either but I wouldn't take this gamble. It's just weird.... and you can ask to remove the feedback because it should have been given after finishing the transaction? If you don't go through with it, they can't leave bad feedback either.

Or give them one last option and that's regular payment within an acceptable timeframe.

I'm personally not a fan of any private trade related transaction that involves exchanging any kind of bank information. I don't trust random strangers to not spirit that information away somewhere for some future reference.

If it's $10, it doesn't sound worth the risk to me.

I really dislike when people give the intent to buy and then string you along for payment.

I would try to back out of this transaction if you can :(  They should not be leaving FB prior to even PAYING you!  Don't know if you can leave that as a follow-up comment or not...

I would just say no - it’s not a huge amount so if they can’t afford it, why buy it?

I said no, and had payment today! Just weird.

I really don't understand the behaviour of the buyer, but I'm happy to hear you got your money :) I hope there won't be any more issues with the transaction from now on!

I blame auto-correct on this one.  :D  Especially if they didn't take the time to go back and correct it.  You would not believe the crazy messages that my DH's tablet comes up with when I am messaging him!  I tried to ask if he wanted fajitas for dinner once.  It tried to send, "tall hats".  I mean... really????

Uhhh,
as I said before.

This buyer at least came through before, so she'll likely come through again-- even if it'll be annoying/frustrating. If she a seller has the right to set the terms of sale saying "Payment needs to be received by X amount of days".

I think thats what I'm going to have to do in future!

Ugh I typed that at 5am sorry for the typos with my phone. >_<

Anyway :) good luck. It's going to be annoying to tell her your terms, but just be clear and stick to it.
