Restore Questions (Marks)
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:34:42 PM »
I'm working on restoring a TAF Munchy :) I've removed most of the marks she had on her with acetone, but there are some that didn't come off on her NDS side. They're rust-colored:

I'm going to sunfade her. The marks are only on the outside of her body, they haven't bled all the way through the plastic, so I'm optimistic that they will fade nicely. However, the mark on the bottom of her hind foot intersects with a tiny patch of what appears to be pindot mold/ingrained dirt. I know that sunfading will not help with that. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with it. I did do the hot water with soap and scraping method and that helped a little bit, but not a whole lot. So how to proceed? Some kind of chemical? Super fine-grained sandpaper? I am not going to paint her so I'm nervous about the sandpaper idea, but I really haven't dealt with pindot mold before.

I've had a little success fading/partially removing pindot by just standing a pony in some peroxide for a few hours (no sunfading with that)

Yellow's the best color for sunfading! Oxy should work too, with no ill effects.

Putting her in a boiling pot of water that has a scoop of oxy clean should kill the mold pretty easily. Leave her in for a few minutes (with the heat turned off and some gloves on your hands, of course! Unless maybe you have some tongs to put her in and take her out with?) and then take her out of the water and scrub the area with some dish soap. Should wipe away super easily and not have any negative effects. Be sure to rinse her thoroughly to make sure there's no oxy clean left on her. ^_^ Oh and clean the pot super well, too. XD

Ooh great idea! I will have to give this a try.

She actually already had a boiling Oxy bath and that didn't do anything for her, but she was only in the bath for about 10 minutes. Also it was my first time trying this, and I learned the hard way not to add the Oxy powder after the water is boiling  there was so much foam that it put out the burner on my stove! :throw:

Yeah, I learned that the hard way too. XD
Now one of the burners on the stove doesn't light sometimes. It does MOST of the time, but sometimes it just won't want to work. :(
You might have to reheat the water again but it should get rid of the pindot!

Also thanks for the info, dede! I had no idea it would affect the paint on her.

Sounds like you are already doing a great job :bigups:  I would go with the oxyclean bath/scrubbing again to remove the pindot mold (sometimes it does take more than one go) . Also if you can find Cif Cream (original lemon) where you live, then get some! it is amazing for cleaning off pindot mold and ingrainded dirt ;)  Sunfading after removing the pindot mold should get rid of the rest of the marks :relaxed:

I have an update; Munchy has been standing in 3% hydrogen peroxide for about three days now, and there is absolutely no change whatsoever in her marks :/ I wonder what I'm doing wrong? Should I be looking for a higher concentration hydrogen peroxide solution? Something else?

Has she also been in the sun? The peroxide only helps when it's exposed to direct sunlight. If so, then maybe give it a few more days? You could also try just boring old sunfading. :(

I'd try a magic eraser, just be careful of the symbols. I've had great success removing rust with it.

I'll see if I can dig up photos.

It lightly takes off the top layer, so it takes the rust with it.

And that's a clean pony in the before photo too, all the marks are rust.

Somehow I totally missed this part, no wonder lol! Thanks Chi :P

And thank you too butterflybuttons, Munchy did have a cursory wipe with the Magic Eraser but not a good scrub so I'll try that too if the peroxide still won't work with sunlight added.
