These are great!!! Love seeing the end results! Not usually a fan of yellow but Gemini_Pony's custom has to be my favourite, she looks amazing! Awesome work everyone :)

Sorry for the late replies, I've been without internet.

And the wings on that boy are incredible!  Is that Sculpey, or something else?

Thanks! Yep, it's Super Sculpey.

Reckon I will message you soon for some tips BlackCurtains - I assume there is a lot of wire going on underneath those beautifully sculpted wings? They make your pony instantly majestic, can't understand why you are not 100% happy with them!! What clay do you use? Getting the wings secured inside the pony will be a challenge..

Is it difficult to learn airbrushing techniques?

There's a backbone (wingbone?) of thick gauge wire but the bulk is actually cardstock and masking tape  ^^; and no, they don't melt or burn in the oven :)

I used Super Sculpey on that guy. I also work with Sculpey III and Premo, depends on what I'm making.

Securing the wings isn't too difficult. I run the backbone wire all the way down inside the front legs. Then for balance issues I cram a couple 1/2 ounce bank sinker fishing weights in them. Then cap it off with Apoxie Sculpt. I also use some Apoxie on the inside where the wire pokes in. It's possible to do all that and still make the wings removable but I've been experimenting with a different way.

Haha, I'm rarely happy with my projects. In this case it's the top row of feathers. Real bird wings don't look like that. I've made a lot of wings but they're never quite the same. I'm still working on perfecting them.

Airbrushing isn't hard to learn if you can already draw and/or paint. It's mostly learning how to control the flow of paint. I have a Paasche double action (the VL-Series I believe) which is really nice. Well worth the investment.

In other news, I'm moved in to my new apartment. I've found about half my arts & crafts supplies so far  But my work area is all set up! It will be nice when I unpack everything and can get back to work.

Sorry for the delayed response, been crazy busy lately and had almost no motivation for ponies lately...

Cardstock and masking tape!! Would never have guessed but that sounds far easier to work with than just wire. I've got two ponies set aside for wings, just haven't actually started anything with them yet. Partially lack of time and partially just daunted by the prospect of trying something so big and new!

Finished these two ladies several weeks back though!! Amethyst pony completed with some final touches on her head, next to the horn..

Need to re-curl the green monstera ponies tail again but otherwise I'm happy with how they turned out. Thinking of doing a series of plant inspired ponies to go with monstera pony, maybe Australian plants next...

Seeking almost any kind of adult G1 ponies - no pink bodies (goodness that sounds morbid lol!!!

Hoping to acquire a bulk lot, preferably within Australia to save on postage.

Cheers!!

They make your pony instantly majestic, can't understand why you are not 100% happy with them!! What clay do you use? Getting the wings secured inside the pony will be a challenge.. Have two bait ponies set aside to make wings for, just a matter of overcoming my own fear and hesitation lol...

Honestly the whole reason why I keep the original pony colour is because I personally don't like the look of a FBR done by brush. I'm becoming inundated with pink baits though, need to embrace FBRs somehow! Also, the gradient affects others can achieve with an airbrush are breathtaking, no amount of patience and make-up sponges can compare! Is it difficult to learn airbrushing techniques?

And hey ChocolateStarfire, great work on the ghostbuster suit! Looks sweet! Personally I almost always rehair a pony before sculpting - less risk of breaking your work. I use polymer clay but turns out that nylon hair can withstand being baked at 130°c quite well

In other news, I have finished two ponies in the past week, haven't had time to get decent photos of them yet. Started looking for a bulk lot of G1 baits for new projects and ended up buying a few others to add to my collection, whoops! Is it just me here in Australia or are G1 prices going through the roof these days? A real struggle to find anything lately!

BlackCurtains - those wings are STUNNING!!! I need to get around to sculpting a full set of wings like that one day! Might look at wings for my next project...

I've *almost* finished two ponies this week!

Had planned to start customise Tootsie next, sadly the bait has several highlighter and other stains on her body so she will be hanging out in sunlight for a while in the hope that may fade the stains. If not, I will need to get very creative to cover them all with polymer clay lol.

I've also received another request for commission and am seriously starting to consider buying an air-brush machine!!

Blackness, I love the Amethyst pony! Maybe do something with her horn? Or some crystal bits by her eyes.

Thanks! Some more crystals to/around the horn might be what's missing!! ^.^

Yeah, I'm with Blackness on this one (I'm jealous of your Sand Digger!).

That said, I have also saved plenty of "bait" ponies who really weren't. My best example is a SS Truly with luscious flocking and original curl. Not sure why she was considered bait to begin with. She's part of my collection now.

Thanks BlackCurtains! Glad I'm not the only one customising whatever I feel like with no guilt hahaha. Not sure what will become of Sand Digger lol, she has heavy graffiti on her rump. I was hoping to make a Sun and Moon themed pair of customs but if I can't remove the stains she might become a merpony or something instead.

As I said earlier, I'm not heavily into collecting, I generally keep the ponies that I loved as a child and don't worry too much about how rare or valuable a certain pony might be - but I will always check these things online before I start ripping a G1 apart for a custom. Some of my baits are double-ups, like Baby Pineapple, Beach Ball and Steamer (even I hesitate before customising a Big Brother!!). Just realised though someone on here might want to take Chocolate Delight off my hands to collect, she's in good condition?

I haven't had to buy ponies for a while (thankfully - is it just me in Australia or are ponies getting more expensive by the day?!) but I generally look for bulk bait ponies and sometimes you get lucky and find a 'bait' that isn't really baity at all.. I've had a look at the HQG1C ponies before but can't justify spending that much on a bait pony, especially with international shipping costs

Great idea for a discussion Griffin ^.^ My customising barriers are mostly lack of time and creativity! I find my creative vibes come and go and there are times where I can't make any progress, so just take a break from it all. After a while ideas start flooding back and then I end up with multiple projects on the go.. It's reassuring to hear that some of you out there have WIPs that have been going for years as well

I've got a few WIPs at the moment, the Arena has inspired me to upload some photos. I've been working on this 30th anniversary Minty since the start of the year, recently finished repainting and varnishing the eyes and need to give her a new tail before I get started on sculpting. Not sure how the newer plastic of the pony will cope in the oven (polymer clay) but maybe one day I'll find out :satisfied:

This pony is almost finished!! WIP since June. Her eyes have been painted and varnished (need better pictures, sorry) and faux amethyst crystals sculpted from polymer clay stuck to her body. I feel like she's not complete though, she needs something more.. Anyway she's back on the shelf with curlers in to set her hair until something comes to me lol, does anyone have any suggestions?

Annnnd just recently stripped these two back and tried Rit Dyemore for the first time! Have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do with them yet, have heard the dye can fade and bleed over time so they will probably be safety stored for several months anyway.

I'm probably going to drive a few collector's crazy with my opinion here lol! I only collect and customise G1 ponies.

I'm not a serious collector, I have around 20 - 30 G1 ponies (mostly from my childhood) that I will keep forever but the rest are fair game for customising. Took a photo recently of my 'bait pile' - I suppose many of them could be restored quite easily but I don't have the time or motivation, it takes me long enough to finish a custom as it is

My customs are not fully painted or dyed, I work with the original pony colour so the less cancer spots and stains the better. To be honest I never really considered that I might be annoying people in the pony community by customising lightly damaged G1's! Each to their own I guess

Impossible to choose a favourite out of all of these ponies! Might need to actually try a full body repaint in the future as those black ponies look unbelievable, particularly the black and silver ones by Einhornbaby... *drool*

You should give it a try! Black and metallic colours are usually quite forgiving when it comes to brush strokes. :)

Only just noticed your comment Griffin!! Lol. Seeing the black beauties which RLisa posted - this is probably such a stupid, n00b question but what's the difference here between the matte adult ponies and the shinier, G1 baby? Is that just a different type of paint or varnish? The matte ones strike me the most, their colour looks natural for a pony. When I finally finish the two I'm currently working (gimme about 6 months LOL) on I may have to try for a black pony...

... The last one lays beheaded in a cardboard box all alone because it's supposed owner turned out to be not a friend anymore...

That is brutal!!

I'm a terrible pony collector to be honest - my baits are mixed in with my collectable G1's in one giant box! Most of my customs have been rehomed but the few who remain are standing in a dark cupboard in the guest room, I imagine they're praying for the day they are also rehomed to someone who can display them properly and give them love..! Have seen some freaking amazing pony rooms and display setups over the years, unfortunately I don't have the space.

And the sculpted symbol looks amazing - how did you make the ring so perfect? If you don't mind revealing your secrets! :P

LOL thanks Griffin - to be honest I raided the tools that came with my son's play-doh set  Tools for sculpting can be found almost anywhere!

So it's a mould of some kind? That's genius!

Not exactly a mould... Got a photo to explain easier lol, the yellow piece is from a play-doh set and I can't remember where I got the white piece from, the top of a plastic bottle or something probably. Just a matter of cutting the clay cleanly and carefully with these two circles to get a ring. Took several attempts until I had one I was happy with!
