Title: Are you a night owl or a morning person?
Post by: dragonfly on July 19, 2016, 11:10:39 AM
Or neither?

What time do you wake up on a typical day?
What time do you go to sleep?
What are your feelings about naps?

Hm... It's rather complex for me. I've been working nights for over four years now. I hate it... I revert to days on my weekends. Thankfully, I will be able to permanently go back to days in just two work weeks. I'm so excited!

As a teenager, I was totally "Stay up real late, wake up real late". I hate myself for it, because the very last time I got to stay at my grandparents' house before they got sick, I slept into until 2PM one day.

Out of high school, I started changing... Waking up in the morning, until gradually settling around waking up best around 8 to 9 am.

Of course, once I switched to nights, things got wonky. I have always reverted back to days for my weekends and vacations.

On workdays, I'll fall asleep anywhere between 1PM...or later. No telling exactly how late, because I oftentimes can't fall asleep. And then I wake up between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm.

I find that on my vacations, I adjust very well to a good sleeping schedule. Like, I wake up around 6 am. Lol. I'm hoping I maintain that!

If I take naps, it totally messes me up. =/

I am definitely a night owl. I tend to feel my most creative after like 9 PM, typically around the time I *should* be going to bed. :/

What time do you wake up on a typical day? 6:30-6:45 AM on weekdays, 8-9 AM on weekends
What time do you go to sleep? 10:30-11:30 PM Sunday-Thursday, 11 PM or later on Friday & Saturday
What are your feelings about naps? Have never been able to take one properly.

I'm very much a night person. I have to get to work by 9 but my brain isn't awake until at least 11 so I'm here for 2 hours trying to wake up.

What time do you wake up on a typical day? 7 - 7:30 after hitting snooze a few times.
What time do you go to sleep? Anywhere between 7 - 11pm depending on how I feel that day.
What are your feelings about naps? <3

Weekends are glorious. I normally go to bed around 1am and get up around 9am.

Although if I'm on a vacation I'll move to 3 or 4 am and get up around noon - 1.

I am definitely a night owl. I tend to feel my most creative after like 9 PM, typically around the time I *should* be going to bed. :/

I'm the same way. The creative urge hits like 8-9 pm and then suddenly its 7 am in the morning and I'm ready for sleep. That being said, I've been trying to get my sleep cycle to something a little more functional, since I find I get more of my house chores done if I try to do them in the early afternoon.

Currently:
What time do you wake up on a typical day? 7:30 am
What time do you go to sleep? about 12:00-2am
What are your feelings about naps? Avoid them as much as possible since I end up staying up later because of them.

In the Past:
What time do you wake up on a typical day? 2pm
What time do you go to sleep? 5-6am
What are your feelings about naps? Good if I'm still tired around 5pm, as long as I get up before 7pm.

I am not an early bird or a night owl I am some kind of permanently exhausted pigeon!

I sleep a lot at night, I hate waking up in the morning AND I also nap during the day

I'd say I'm more of a night owl, but my work schedule keeps me from staying up late.  I'm still plenty alert in the morning, but I'm more active at night.  Right now I try to get to bed around 11 and get up at 6 for work.  Fridays and Saturdays I usually go to bed around 2 and get up about 8.

On some particularly exhausting days, or if I'm not feeling to well, I will have a nap, but otherwise if I'm feeling tired, I'll just have some soda or something for some extra energy.

Without noise disturbances I wake up between 10 and 11. Go to bed around 12 or sometimes 1.
If I have to work in the morning, which means getting up at 7, I need to take a nap at 1 pm to function. But that's an acquired thing, the more often you do it, the more your body gets used to it and wants it.
Luckily in my office everybody sleeps at that time, so it's no problem.
My best time of the day is 11 am I think, and 3 pm. I don't work well after 7. My concentration is gone by then.

I'm definitely a night owl.  Like others, I feel more creative the later it is.  This is perfectly fine when I'm on vacation (like right now,) but it's a big problem during the school year.

What time do you wake up on a typical day?

Depends.  When I'm at work, usually by 8:30 am.  When I'm on vacation, I try to be awake by 11 am.

What time do you go to sleep?

Between 11:30 pm and 1 am.

What are your feelings about naps?

If I didn't sleep the night before, I'll take a nap.  Otherwise, I tend to skip them.

I guess both? I sleep whenever I have the time. I know that sounds crazy but it's true. Sometimes I go 24-48+ hours before actually sleeping. I usually just have so much to do that I don't spend much time sleeping. Naps are definitely my friend. I usually nap very often to go in between sleeping

That is me also!!!

I have always been a night owl and am more creative at night. I have worked night shift for 16 years and I am not productive until after 5:30 pm on most days. Even my days off. If I have things to do that has to be done before business hours, I have to set the alarm to actually get up and do it, otherwise by the time I remember it's closed and can't be done.

What really sucks is that most places don't run on the 24 hour clock so if I have to go to the doctor or pay bills I have to get up during the day.... YUCK!

Little Tribble is the same way. Right now that he is on Summer vacation (he is 6) he gets up around 10 am and goes to bed around midnight. The Doctors had to put him on melatonin before preschool so that we could get his sleep pattern in order (we would fight with bedtime anywhere from 10 pm to 5am) If he can keep himself moving he can keep himself awake.

I heard somewhere that the time you are most awake has to do with the time you were born. I was born after midnight, Little Tribble after 11pm. I don't know how true this is but of the 3 people I know we were all born way late and are night owls.

What time do you wake up on a typical day? usually by 2pm but after I go to sleep I wake up about every 2-3 hours; 5:30pm (when working)
What time do you go to sleep? normal day = 2-4am; 9-10am (when working)
What are your feelings about naps? Take them all the time, then usually wish I hadn't. I normally wake up feeling worse than when I laid down. And my naps aren't those little 30min to an hour naps. If I fall asleep, I sleep for 3-4 hours!

I can be both :) Waking up early gives me the feeling I have a whole day to spend. But after a night out and late to bed sleeping in is also chill by me.
If I work 7 am is the most likely time to wake up. And I go to bed at 11-12 most of the time.
And I do enjoy a good nap too on day offs :) In the mediteranes its normal to have siësta :)

Morning person all the way for me.
What time do you wake up on a typical day? Usually around 6am/7am/8am depending on the day. During the school semester though sometimes I wake up at 4am to get homework done or to study.
What time do you go to sleep? I can never stay up passed midnight; I usually go to be around 9pm or 10 pm.
What are your feelings about naps? I never take naps. Once I'm awake I'm awake (Unless I'm sick or something lol).

A bit of both, I usually stay up til about 1AM, later if there's no cause for me to get up a reasonable time the next day. I don't necessarily mind getting up early because relaxing in the morning is always nice, but every now and then I do feel like having a lie-in. As for naps, I don't usually actively decide to have them but they do happen by accident when I get a bit too laid-back. XD

I am in reality a morning person, I love to be up early before anyone else and just enjoy the coming of the day. I'm on my last week of holliday and have been up at 8 or 9 am for the past three and a half weeks.. Had I been given more weeks I would eventually be up at 6 or 7.

Sadly I have a job that is afternoon to night which change my rythm the rest of the year to night owl. I go to bed between 1 and 3 am and sleep to 10 or eleven and I'm not really fond of eating breakfast while everybody else eat lunch.. but it is what it is.

Night owl since childhood! I have always had problems staying awake in school during the day, my father had the same exact problem his entire life too. When we lived together we only came out at night, but we always tried to go to the beach early mornings. Apparently its a family thing and my doctors constantly have me try these Rx sleeping pills and no brands out of like 20+ ive tried plus teas have ever helped. Im naturally WIRED at dusk until noon. Right now im awake only because of energy drinks LOL! It became such a problem I can only work night shifts and take night classes for school and honestly I LOVE it because cooler weather temperatures, no customers or large groups of people, and I never miss out on celestial events such as meteor showers, lunar eclipses, or the northern lights on rare events. It works for my metabolism, this way is very easy on my ultra-pale skin tone, and I LOVE the moon so naturaly I am always going to be a night person who sleeps during the gross daytime hours. I would classify myself as a legit nocturnal being (not some stupid sleeping disorder) 10000000% and again im only up right now because I drank an energy drink, wanted to stay up and capture Pokémon. Mornings mean bedtime for me! My life is wake up about 8PM, work my night shift until 7-10am, go to bed in a bright room, repeat.

I used to be an ultra night owl, staying up all night and not going to bed until anywhere from 4-7AM. I hated going to bed early and waking up early was a dreadful experience that made me a beast to deal with. Boy has this changed.

I get tired early....I'm usually in bed by 9PM. And I wake up at 7AM for work and on my weekends I usually wake up before 7 and can't fall back asleep. Once in a while I'll sleep in until about 9 and I feel guilty doing it. Being up all night was actually not good for my depression and it took me years to realize this. I think sunlight does me good and my circadian rhythm needs to stay with me being up during the day.

I am definitely a morning person, I almost never have trouble getting up in mornings. I am usually a zombie by 0:00, I don't like staying up late. I go to sleep at 22:00 when I have school the next day. On days off I usually got to sleep at 23:00 or 23:30 if there is something really exciting that keeps me up :P I never do naps. If I am really tired then I just lay down, eyes closed for some time and it's enough to regain my energy :)

My natural state is probably a morning person. I prefer to go to bed (very) early, and I love the peace and quiet of an early morning, especially in the summer when it's already getting light before 05:00 AM. When that's the case I also enjoy staying up until it gets light now and then.

But in reality I just want to sleep, sleep, sleep... My job is making me too tired to follow my natural rhythm. :(

I'm definitely a night owl. If the world would let me, I wouldn't probably go to be until 6am and wake up at 2pm. I typically revert close to that on my time off. I'm staying longer at a job I don't 100% like because it allows me to work more of an afternoon shift most of the time, which is somewhat usual for my field. I love naps! But I'm sure they are so bad for me. I can't help it; I so much love snuggling into blankets.

Night Owl.
I go to bed around 3-4 AM even if I have to be up at 7 AM.
The people I work with are CONSTANTLY NAGGING me that I should go to bed no later then 10. Of course these are the same people who think the reason I always have a cough is because I refuse to drink hot water when in reality its more likely caused by China's horrendous air pollution.
Plus I feel like people who take a nap after lunch every day have no right to criticize my sleeping patterns.

tikibirds- this is the second time I'd heard about people in China taking naps after lunch. Is this a cultural thing? Do they sleep at work?

In Germany it is also very common for people to nap after lunch - not at work, but on weekends or in their vacation. In kindergarden they also take the children to bed after lunch for a nap. I never liked that and never did, even as child when I was forced to lay down after lunch myself.

As far as I can say about my sleeping patterns: I WAS a night owl, but since our daughter Fenja was born in April, sleeping long in the morning is over, so I have become a morning person, not staying up for so long anymore....  :P

I am pretty sure we took naps in kindergarden as well.

But In china, at least in my location - most places close for lunch from 11ish-2ish. Even High schools, although I dont think they all go home for a nap. Big supermarkets and places like KFC stay open though. I dont mind the naps but I HATE the split shifts. If I go home, then I expect to be done for the day. Plus whenever I nap it tends to be for hours at a time not 45 minutes

Wow, I would totally hate that. Like you, when I get home, I want to stay home. I don't wanna go back to work, LOL. Even on the days I go out for lunch at work, when I leave Taco Bell or McDonalds I just want to drive in the opposite direction and not go back.

I guess I'm a bit of both. I think my natural sleeping cycle would be something like 1 am to 10 am. Getting to bed before midnight is extremely difficult for me! However, I prefer working 9 to 5 so that I can save those evening hours for my hobbies, which means I have to get up at 7.30 or so. Getting out of bed is often hard, but I'm not the grumpy type - I'm good as soon as I get my eyes properly open and have had some coffee and something to eat. The hardest part is not hitting snooze for the fifth time. :P Whenever I wake up early I do enjoy the peace and quiet of the morning hours. I kind of wish I could wake up early without the alarm clock but sadly that rarely happens.

I'm a natural night owl that doesn't like to go to bed till midnight (or even later) on the weekends, but I try to go to bed earlier on weekdays since I have to wake early for work.  It's not fun.

What time do you wake up on a typical day?
-6:30am on weekdays because of work.  On weekends I may wake up before noon, but I tend not to get out of bed before then.

What time do you go to sleep?
-Around 10pm (or I try to) on weekdays.  Around midnight on weekends.

What are your feelings about naps?
-I am incapable of napping for just 30 minutes or an hour.  If I nap, it's for at least a few good hours.

I am definitely a night owl by nature, my mom is the same way.  Unfortunately I have to be at work at 9am, although my last job I had to be there at 7:30am so this is an improvement.  I would probably be most happy when getting up around 11am or 12pm. I noticed that when I go on vacation I revert back to my "natural" sleep pattern.  I am also more creative at night and feel more alert/alive at night.

Through the week I wake up from 6:30-7am(I hit snooze a lot!).  My goal is to be in bed by 10:30, but I don't think I have ever made that goal :( it is usually 11 ish to 12 ish through week.  I am always tired and exhausted and I hate it.  I feel like I never have any energy :(

Naps are great, although, I never have time to take one through the week. I used to take naps a lot when I still worked at the animal hospital on the weekend.  When it was weekend we would have to go in the morning and the evening to take care of the animals, so I was usually tired so I took a nap in between those times.  I don't take naps as often unless my husband works on the weekend, because otherwise we just wake up when our bodies are ready to wake up which was around 10am today.  Also for me to take a nap it is usually 3 hours long or else it is just a waste of time lol.

Morning person, definitely. I start work at 8, and I'm at my most productive in the morning. When I have to get up in the morning, I'll usually be in bed by 9 or so, though I'm happy to stay up longer when I'm meeting up with friends or something like that. On the weekends, I sleep longer, but how long depends on what I've got planned for the day. I try to have at least one day when I can have a lie-in, which tends to be Sunday.

I sometimes take naps on the weekend, usually when I had to get up early in the morning (to go to a car boot sale, for instance). I'd never heard of those "forced naps", Tikibirds, and I'm quite glad we don't have those here. Naps are one of those little weekend luxuries for me.

I'm more of a night owl by-force. I set my alarm to be within the 10am-11am range so I can wake my boyfriend up so he isn't so groggy for work (he works 5pm-1am) and generally I fall asleep around 2am, so I still get a good 8-hours of sleep in.

Generally I don't take naps anymore since i'm constantly on-call for the hospital for shifts during the week.

I am totally a morning person! I work at 4 am so I can get off early to pick up my kids from school. I've always been a morning person though. I get grouchy if I don't get to bed at a normal time!

My husband is the opposite though! He works swing shift and goes to bed around 2:30 when I'm waking up for work! He's always been much better at staying up late but it's really hard for him to get up before 9 or 10 in the morning.

I think I am a morning person who thinks she is a night owl  I usually can stay up quite late, but if I do I always struggle with sleeping and just end up having a terrible day the day after. If I get to bed earlier, and get up in the morning I am a happier person.

I am not especially creative in the evenings either  - I usually just read, or surf the internet until my mind goes blank... and then I know it is time for bed for sure!

Night owl. I find it really hard to go to bed at a reasonable time. I just want to be up and doing things! Mornings are too bright and harsh.

What time do you wake up on a typical day? If I'm working, I usually have to get up at 5:00-7:00 am. On the weekends, I usually get up at around 8:30-9:00 am.

What time do you go to sleep? On work days; 10:00-11:00 pm. On weekends; around midnight.

What are your feelings about naps? I love naps! I usually start my Fridays with a post-dinner nap after a tiresome week of working. If I could, I would nap seven days a week! But then I wouldn't get enough night sleep during the work week. I usually nap for about 60 minutes; any longer than that and my night sleep gets ruined.

All in all, I easily adapt to early mornings as well as late nights. I jokingly say I'm a mixture of my parents; Dad being a night owl and Mom is typical mornings person. So far, it's pretty easy for me to adjust but then I'm still fairly young so...

Both. Last night I was up until 11:30 pm and today I was up at 6 am.

What time do you wake up on a typical day? 6 am (that is after being woken up a few times by husband and dog...)
What time do you go to sleep? 10-11:30pm
What are your feelings about naps? I wish, but I usually feel worse after taking one.

Neither a morning person or a night Owl.

I usually get up at 7.30 when I´m working and go to bed about 10-11.30.
If I can I will sleep to 10 in the morning without a problem.

If I miss my sleep in some reason I can take a nap in the middle of the day without feeling bad about it. :)

Eh a bit of both? I usually tend to get up quite early without an alarm clock and honestly wake up time for me can be anywhere from like around 5.30-8.00. 8am is a 'late' start of the day for me. I try not to go to bed late like usually I average around 11pm

I haven't got a problem with either really, but for me once I get tired oh boy do I get tired

Neither! I sleep about 15 hours per day due to my disability (though I desperately want to cut down on that!), so I miss the night and the morning! Before I got really sick I was a morning person -- when I was in middle/high school I would get up at 5:00 a.m. just to play on the internet (the good ol' days before DSL). Then I'd do yoga before school. I really wish I could get back into that habit, but that was a loooong time ago.

I love waking up when the sun is rising... even if it's 5am. It's so refreshing!

I'm far more alert and creative at night, and sometimes don't find myself going to bed until 4-5am. I PREFER to get up really early and have an entire day ahead of me, but I've always despised mornings and I think I always will :P

I don't particularly like napping because I tend to feel awful when I wake up, but sometimes I really need to!
