If we're narrowing "background" to just those without speaking/interaction roles or known occupations, the you-just-glimpse-them-and-then-they're-gone type ponies, then.... that handsome new constellation pegasus has really caught my eye. Otherwise, I'd probably go with Lucky, but I think he's actually had a speaking part at least once.

What about flashback/once-off/fictional appearances? Like Granny Smith's dad, Twilight's dad, or even... dare I say it... Daring Do?

Yes, I agree. There are several younger style ponies I like as well.

On a side note, I hope Hasbro doesn't decide to make all the fillies blank flanks. That's supposed to be special to the CMC... that's why they're the Cutie Mark Crusaders in the first place.

I love Pony, she's probably one of my favorite ponies of all.
Lyra/Heartstrings is another favorite, because I just love those colors.  Same goes for Roseluck, one of the few blindbag ponies I sought out - the yellow and dark red/pink is just a lovely combination.  And Doctor Whooves, of course. ^^

I was so excited to see Blossomforth as a background pony.  I hope we see more brushables appear on the show!

There are two pegasi with shaggy manes that I love.
One has the same colour scheme as SS Twilight & one's a dusty sort of yellow. I think their fan names are Rainbow Day & Dizzy Twister.
I'd love it if they got speaking roles.  :3
