When I was a new collector back in 2000, I was a bit eager to try out some restoration stuff and a couple of my childhood ponies became my guinea pigs... Bridal Beauty got a new tail and Strawberry Scoops got a partial repaint of her symbols. While I don't regret doing that, these days I'd rather leave things be. My childhood ponies have frizz, haircuts and worn-off symbols, but I'm content to not change anything; it sets them apart and makes them uniquely MY childhood ponies. However, I AM all for washing and combing! I want them to look as good as they can, despite their flaws! :)

Oh, and I'm also okay with upkeep on the restorations I did - the paint I used on Strawberry's symbols years ago was low quality and started to get weird, so I scrubbed it off and re-did it recently. Someday I'm going to get Bridal Beauty another new tail, because the one I put in wasn't MLP hair, and it feels different.

Pony Corral / Re: Limiting your collection?
« on: April 30, 2012, 06:18:49 PM »
I keep my collection very limited, though it's never been a challenge for me because there are actually a lot of ponies that I legitimately don't want! The only rule is that I collect only the ponies that I like the most. For me, that means mostly G1, with a handful of ponies from other gens. Even within G1, I just collect a select few (well, okay, by "few" I actually mean about a hundred or so! It just seems like a few, relatively speaking. :P). I'd never be able to limit myself to one type or set - that just sounds frustrating! So, my advice is to decide which ponies you really LOVE, and only collect those ones.

Pony Corral / Re: cotton candy g1 oddity- originals vs retros

I believe what you have here are the original "flat foot" Cotton Candy (on the left) and the "concave foot" one just to the right of her. The latter is in fact a different mold (with concave feet, obviously, as well as longer front legs to keep the pony from tipping over as easily), and differently colored than the original. She was available through mail order, whereas the flat footed one was the regular store release.

Pony Corral / Re: G1 Sparkle Ponies with 'melted' insides?
« on: April 26, 2012, 04:45:17 PM »

It's a production flaw, having to do with the rotary casting technique used to produce ponies.  In short the mould is spun while vinyl is pumped in and centrifugal force spreads it out.  If the viscosity is too high or the heat sets it too quickly, you get those 'extra drips', just like if you cook your omelette too far before it spreads out evenly in the pan.

I was getting all excited to explain this, but it looks like I was beaten to it! Anyway, yeah, it's pretty normal and a result of how they were made. Your ponies aren't slowly melting!  :silly:

Also, if you notice some sparkle ponies are more opaque than others, try holding them up to the light - in the more opaque ones you will see lots of tiny air bubbles in the plastic. Not sure if this is the same thing as the cloudiness you were referring to?

Oh, I have a Sealight like that. Her head is normal lavender, but the last time I washed her, she lost a noticeable amount of purple dye from her body. Her body was already lighter than her head when I bought her.

It seems like purple is the least stable dye? It's very prone to regrind, and this color loss happens as well. Makes me worried for what our purple ponies will look like in the future!

Not my only green pony, but one that I don't usually see getting a lot of love!

I only had a few, but here they are! Plus two petite ponies who unfortunately were lost.

Here's my Seaflower... one of the prettiest ponies, in my opinion! I didn't think it was possible for someone to think she was ugly! But I know how it is; my girlfriend hates Sunspot, who's one of my favorites. She thinks Sunspot looks like someone with a bad fake tan and bleach-blonde hair (mine has faded white hair)! Ouch.
