Pony Corral / Re: Sanding off mold spots... Help me, please... T_T
« on: May 23, 2017, 08:41:43 PM »
Thanks so much for the info! I love your site! I've been using it for years. <3 I had no idea there was so much variance in how deep the mold had invaded the plastic... That explains why I've never had any luck sanding (I did manage to significantly lighten one spot, but that was my only "success"). I figured it just spread to a certain extent, then stopped due to lack of plasticizer, or something. ^_^;

I hadn't thought of the fungi in the air itself... I guess that does make it kind of futile to obsess over disinfecting. :/ I had thought once it took root in the vinyl, it was more likely to spread if untreated? But I don't know how much sense that makes... I'm kind of a germaphobe, so I just feel the compulsion to decontaminate things, lol. ^_^;

Disinfecting the spots certainly won't hurt and it makes sense to.  That way you don't already have a fungus on that specific pony that can spread if the humidity gets to high.  But if the humidity is consistently too high, then the spots will show up regardless.

As for the sanding, maybe when folks reported that worked it was staining from another cause?  Or maybe the fungus stained only so far down before the humidity dropped low enough for it to go dormant?  We are all still learning, so who knows.

I don't believe removezit would do anything but fade your pony and may leave the spot intact.  Sanding only works if the spot is on the surface and not at all deep.  I don't know how the folks who have good results with this could tell how deep their spots went.  Trial and error maybe?  Do you have any photos?

IIRC peroxide will bleach out some pony hair colors, so be careful.

Are the glitter symboled ponies ones with gold symbols, like Sunbeam, Starshine, or Pinwheel?  They are prone to "symbol rust."  They get brownish stuff (probably mold or something) that appears around their symbols.  Usually in round spots, which makes me think that they're a kind of mold colony or something. I'm not sure if it's the same stuff as traditional age spots.

As far as "body" age spots, I had a Sunbeam who had one age spot when I got them.  Despite my attempts to sterilize the spots, they still spread like crazy.  (I was not able to boil them because of the glitter symbol though.)

The ponies in question are Moonstone and Majesty (silver and blue glitter). The spots aren't around the cutie mark... they're right IN the cutie mark. o_0; The glitter is completely "eaten" away where the spots are.

If it doesn't spread further, it's not a huge deal... I can just paint over it with a bit of PearlEx glitter and some sealer (I already did that with Moonstone, and she looks fine... for now). It just creeps me out to think that the mold(?) might actually still be alive under there, plotting its revenge. =P ...Hence why I like to obliterate it entirely, if possible. It's a comfort to know it won't spread to other ponies, though.

Just saw this, sorry.  So glitter symbols can rust and stain the vinyl, which isn't mold at all.  That doesn't mean you don't have brown spots form multiple causes.  Also, pvc reacts with certain chemicals and compounds also causing discoloration and I don't know what the glitter is made up of.  If you're worried about mold, keep the humidity where the ponies live below 70%.  Fungi is everywhere so it doesn't matter if you disinfect the pony or not.  I've had mixed results fading spots caused by glitter rust using a peroxide/sun soak.  If you try that, make sure to read the materials section of my site so you're aware of all possible side effects.

My very first pony ever!  She's one of the few that I've kept multiple versions of.  I also have an upgrade and the Italian one.

Im disappointed in Hasbroken's crappy distribution with both the Pearlies and the Titans Returns lines.

I really wanted Starlight Glimmer, Sea Swirl and Sapphire Joy. Kiddo wanted Coloratura and Sapphire Joy. You suck sometimes Hasbro.

I still have several for sale on my website, if you're ok that they're the ones from China.  http://www.mlppreservationproject.com/sales5.html

He's so pretty!  He's one of my sister's childhood ponies and I have him now.  For us, she was always a he and married to Princess Royal Blue.  They have a really large family including Baby Noddins and Baby Ribbs.  I forget everyone's pony names as we never used them, but they had something like 8 children all together.  They were my pony version of the family from the Cosby show.  The whole family is still all together and has even grown some over the years.   :lol:

I haven't liked the re-design so far, but I really like these.  I'm finding Spike as a fish pretty funny too.  Not sure we need another castle.

The worst for me though  is cat pee.  When a pony arrives covered in cat pee nothing helps it.  Argh

LOL, this has happened to you often?

There really isn't anything that I can't forgive.  Head body mismatch bothers me the most, but I can ignore it.

There are also people out there with the skills to reprint/cut replacement pieces. I used to work with someone who would do it from time to time when a piece was missing from a puzzle. It was pretty impressive actually. Couldn't tell the difference.

That's so cool!  Are they still around?

I don't think they'd sell for a lot, but I bet you will get interest in them.  The box art is so pretty that even with just the box the puzzles are pretty cute.

Munchy is a special one. Read a fanfic ages ago that explained where Munchy got her meat from ... I guess someone needed to keep the bushwoolie population in check. Poor bushwoolies.

That can't be the whole story though - we know, from evidence, that ponies are capable of having full body plasticizer breakdown/separation, inside and out.  So why would fungus only show up as pinpoint round dots, and never as a full body spread?

- I'm not saying that every spot ever is fungus, just that a lot of what we thought was other things ended up being fungus all along.  It does show up all over their body, we've all seen ponies with multiple spots of it.  If you've ever grown mold in a petri dish you'll see this, it often forms in circles in different spots.  Or on a piece of bread I'm sure you've seen it before.  I think if you left a pony in the right conditions long enough they would get completely covered.

 For that matter, you'd think we'd see far more cases where the damage was worse on the inside rather than the outside,

- The fungal spores are floating around in the environment and they'll attach to whatever they hit first when the conditions are right.  It does grow on the inside too, I'm sure we've all cleaned out plenty of green ponies.  The specific fungus that causes pink staining does live inside the doll.  My guess is that the one that causes the brown staining we think of as these spots prefers the conditions outside the doll.

As for the brown splotches so common on certain white ponies and big brothers, I'm fairly confident in saying that they're chemical in nature.  I've had my collection in near ideal storage (no direct light, not sealed, <40% humidity, 18-21C) for nearly 30 years, and I've seen it develop under those conditions.

- I think so too.  I would like to confirm if they used titanum dioxide in the dye for the white ponies.  It's pretty ubiquitous in white paints, and it interacts with UV light and oxygen.  We can't really avoid oxygen so no matter how the toy is stored there could be a reaction with it. (Edit, this is incorrect, TiO2 is chemically stable and so won't react with oxygen or water.  It absorbs UV light, but I can't find anything indicating that would cause browning.  Please forgive the mistake.)

I found this, it sounds like it may explain how fungus might aid in the deterioration of vinyl:  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC92133/  I'm on my rather short lunch break right now, so I don't have time to go through it entirely, but I'll read it when I get home.  There are plenty of diagrams and photos explaining how fungus/mold grows and spreads too.  Maybe these will explain a few things we're seeing.

I really do move on to researching other issues ponies have between these conversations.  I know I'm always posting about fungus, lol.

So the discoloration on ponies that are prone to leak plasticizer are from fungus, not the breaking apart of the vinyl because fungus feeds on plasticizer?

Just clarifying cuz it's really interesting. I remember spots on 4 speed and/or chief back somewhere between 92~96 and they weren't really stored in an area where humidity was too much of concern. We noticed regrind at the same time period. As kids, it seemed similar.

No, the staining is the waste from the fungus.  The plasticizer separates from the vinyl, but all that happens is the vinyl hardens.  The fungus and the leaking plasticizer aren't necessarily related.  I'm just saying that it would make sense if ponies prone to leaking plasticizer are also more prone to having the spots show up.  Fungus can feed on a lot of stuff, so it wouldn't be only ponies leaking plasticizer that would have the spots show up.  For example, powders like baking soda, corn starch, baby powder, are all really bad for them as they'll cause a fungus dinner party under the right conditions.

As for the spots on your brother ponies, that's beyond what I know about.  Maybe fluctuations in temperature somehow effect regrind?  I have a suspicion that some of the spots so common in white ponies have to do with titanium dioxide reacting to oxygen and UV light, but I haven't been able to confirm that it was used in these ponies' dyes.  It's so common in white paint though, it wouldn't surprise me.
