Pony Corral / Twinkle Eye Iridescent Paint
« on: November 20, 2017, 05:01:46 AM »
Does anyone have a photo of both a twinkle eye pony with the eye paint intact, and one that's missing it.  For comparison.

I don't think I've ever gotten a TE pony that still had the eye paint.  I'm not even sure I know exactly what they're supposed to look like.

Pony Corral / Pony Cancer or Beauty Marks?
« on: April 20, 2017, 03:20:46 PM »
Someone in another post replied to a spot of cancer on a pony as a "beauty mark".  I love this.  Maybe we could all start calling them this and change the negative culture around these spots a little?

1:  They are a fungus and will only spread if the humidity where the pony is housed goes above 70%.  Fungus is everywhere and they will show up if the humidity is high regardless of whether or not there are already infected ponies in the herd.  (According to "The definitive book on the care and preservation of vinyl dolls and action figures." by Nicholas J Hill)

2:  These ponies deserve love too!  Having a few marks due to the aging process is natural.

I just really like this term much better.

Customs / I'm Getting Commissions & I'm Not A Customizer - HELP!
« on: December 26, 2016, 04:55:31 PM »
Ok, so here's the story.  One of my students (the human, I'm a dog trainer) found out that I collect MLP and thought my website is neat.  She gave me a bunch of her old toys including MLP and FSF.  She didn't understand the difference between a restoration and a custom and asked me if I'd make her custom versions of her horses.  I told her I'd be happy to give it a try and I let her know I don't consider myself a customizer.  I really prefer to do restorations on G1's, but she's really into 80's toys and I had a yucky condition Blossom so I figured it wouldn't hurt anything.

She has two ponies and two horses.  I'm doing her a custom with a G1 base, G3, and G4, and she wants one of her horses done using a Grand Champion.  The G1 and the G4 are finished.  She likes them so much that she posted them on facebook for her horse world friends to see and now some of them have messaged me asking if I can do similar ones for them.  She thinks I could make some side money off this and wants me to make them and sell them at the horse shows she goes to (she does jumping competitions, it's really a universe I don't know anything about).

Are these good enough for that?  I don't want to get into customizing a lot of G1's, but I really enjoyed making them.  She thinks most of these folks won't know the difference between a G1 and a G3 and that most of them will want Grand Champion customs.

Here's some photos:

Pony Corral / So Much Right, So Much Wrong - Updates Finished!
« on: December 25, 2016, 11:37:17 AM »
For those of you who asked about updates to my site based on the Care and Preservation of Vinyl Dolls book I got, they're finished.  There are updates all across the site.

Ironically, a lot of what collectors used to think actually turns out to be true.  Like pony cancer/age spots and smooze really is often caused by fungus.  The author also provides really solid info on how to prevent fungal growth, what "highlighter marks" often actually are (yup, fungus), and why exposure to chlorine is really bad for PVC.

I haven't been able to find any contact information for him so I haven't been able to write and ask questions specific to ponies.  Anyone especially good at cyber stalking?  I'm hoping the pony collecting chemist I've been corresponding with (Delphinbella) will have more answers that are specifically safe for ponies/dyed vinyl. Hopefully those updates will be coming soon as well!

Yes, this is what I've been spending my holiday doing.  Merry Christmas to all and a pony filled New Year!   :snowball:

The Dollhouse / Older Barbies?
« on: December 18, 2016, 08:31:54 AM »
Someone just gave me a bunch of older toys, including Barbies.  I haven't gone through them all yet, but they date back to the 60's.  One is a groom dated 1966.  Are these something someone might want?  Or are Barbies just too common?

Thanks all!

Pony Corral / Your Goals for Your Ponies?
« on: December 11, 2016, 06:39:31 AM »
I'm just curious what other folks long term goals are.  I like to buy ponies cheap then fix them up.  I'll be happy if I have a few of them with me in when I'm in a nursing home (and my lavender dream castle, can't live without that).  I don't expect that my kids or grandkids would care much about them (if I ever have any).

Some people like to customize, some like to treat the ponies as museum pieces, some do restorations, and some want to get every pretty pony.

I'm just curious what it is you all would like to see for your own collections down the line.
