They’re beginning to show up at TRU in Canada.

I feel like Banana Surprise just doesn’t photograph well. I always thought she was ‘meh’ but I jumped to buy the first one I saw in person. She’s really lovely.

It also took me ages to get TE Gingerbread. I disliked that pose for a long time, so that didn’t help. However, when I finally got her I loved her. Her colour combination is just perfect.

Liquid Fusion is fantastic for repairs like this, and it remains flexible after it dries. You can use it to cover the torn plugs, then when you’re ready to rehair you can use a pin or a tack to punch new holes in the Liquid Fusion area.

I had exactly this thought as a kid. I loved the Dream Castle and I hated that the Ponies gave up the castle in the movie. The PE playset also didn’t appeal to me. Apart from being cranky about the castle being replaced, I didn’t like the look of the PE and it felt like a lot of the accessories were targeted more toward Megan and Molly than the ponies. I still don’t have and don’t want a PE in my collection, but the castle was the first playset I bought when I started collecting again as an adult.

Pony Corral / Re: The Mimic Phenomenon

Elfpony's right, this is a distribution thing common in Canada.  It's why you are much more likely to find the Wave 2 Sea Ponies up here.
Canada tries to order what the USA orders, there aren't enough, but there IS demand, so Canada gets shipment #2.  ponies, vaccines, luxury goods, cars, you name it.  LOL
I hadn’t thought of that but now that you mention it yeah. We saw some of that with early G4, where the States had tonnes of Mane Six but Canada got lots of the original characters. Conversely, in G3, we got hardly any of the TRU exclusive ponies. Bringing it back to Mimic, it’s likely that this kind of buying was also in play back in the 80s that resulted in some sets being harder to find in some areas.

I think Taffeta makes a good point. I think it’s easy to assume that a popular vintage collectible is expensive because it’s rare, but that’s not always the case. Many things can drive up the price on collectibles and perceived rarity is only one aspect (I say “perceived “ rarity because we’re often told that something is hard to find when a little digging proves otherwise. There’s also a tendency for collectors to assume that because something is expensive it must be HTF).

My own personal anecdote on Mimic is that, as a child I first encountered her in a pamphlet and immediately fell in love. I loved everything about her and I wanted one badly. However, I only saw her in stores once and at the time I elected to buy Jangles and Tangles instead because I was away from home and thought ponies with accessories would be more entertaining for the week. But I never saw another Mimic to buy.

What I take away from this memory is not that Mimic was short packed or harder to get, but that possibly the whole second set of TE were. Note that, at the time Mim was on shelves in Canada I was buying instead a twin set from the previous year, indicating that new and older stock were available together. If anything, it supports the theory that 2nd waves are harder to find in stores, something we’ve seen happen in G3 and G4.

Memory is a tricky thing and not entirely to be trusted. But I’m fairly confident of this one because I only had one twin set as a child, and I’m sure that if I’d seen Mimic for sale again at a later time I’d have snapped her up. So it’s possible that the whole set was a little harder to find back in the 80s. Of course, this is anecdotal at best.

About current pricing, I do think we’ll see the market fluctuate down again, but I don’t think it will go back to pre-pandemic prices. I expect prices to stay slightly inflated (we’ve seen that prices for G1s generally had been going up for years before that). But remember that for collectors, patience is a virtue. People still find rare ponies second hand and it is possible to get a bargain if you don’t mind waiting.

Pony Corral / Re: G1 Backcards/Boxes? Who collects these ?
« on: January 30, 2021, 04:34:37 AM »
Oh yes. I have boxes for most of my G1 playsets and I love the look of them. Weirdly, one of the few things I still have from my childhood is the box for the Party Pack and the art on that is to die for. I’d really like to have more backcards, I love the stories about the ponies and art that’s included on those, especially the early ones.

Pony Corral / Re: "Outsider" reactions in the past?

You have to realize too that toy collecting, although not as main stream as it is now, wasn’t unheard of. People were certainly aware of adults collecting toy train sets or Barbie, for example. It wasn’t a huge stretch for people to then realize that something like Transformers or G I Joe was collectible. Funnily, a lot of people didn’t make the jump to realizing that “girls” toys of the same era were as collectible as “boys” toys. So there was some sneering at buying ponies but then again I could walk away from a show with a bag full of ponies for little money.

When FIM took off the existing collectors had a bit of a “what just happened?” moment. It was odd to suddenly have an influx of interest, both from bronies and the media. The media really annoyed the collectors more. There was a lot of mocking of bronies (and collectors by association), and a lot of “look at this new weird thing!  MLP is suddenly popular!  Oops, now they’ve all moved on to something else, wasn’t that a weird little thing!”  And through all that you have collectors rolling their eyes and thinking “ we’ve been around for years and we’re still here but you don’t find us interesting because we’re largely 30-40 year old women with stable jobs and mortgages and a fun interest on the side but ok”.

On a side note, last year I had a booth at a local toy show selling MLP and other “girl” lines from the 80s. The dealers beside us who were focused mainly on TMNT and some other action figures were ribbing us a bit while we were setting up. “Oh, my little pony!  Hahahaha”. ...We out sold them by about $500.

Pony Corral / Re: Do restored ponies have an increased or decreased value?
« on: December 05, 2020, 04:32:13 AM »
It depends on the relative rarity/cost of the original pony, as well. A pony that’s quite rare could lose a lot of value from being altered in any way, and it’s a sliding scale (in that a mint pony might be worth $500 on the market, while the same pony with a bad haircut would go for $300 but a rehair might only fetch $200, depending on who is buying at the time).

It’s also important to mark somehow that an alteration has been done. Any of my alternate rehairs in my collection are marked under their feet, acknowledging that some day my collection may pass on to other hands and I may not be there to oversee the process or will have otherwise forgotten these details.

Beads to the back on mine. I most likely bought her at the MLP Fair one year, so no help determining where she came from, I’m afraid.

Pony Corral / Re: How much time do you spend in your pony room?
« on: October 31, 2020, 05:04:53 AM »
It depends for me. I usually try to schedule long weekends a few times a year for bigger projects so I can get a whole project done in one go (like rearranging a display). Otherwise, I’ll be in there usually once a week, doing small things or just enjoying looking at my collection. I share the room with my roommate (she collects She-Ra), so sometimes we just hand out in there and chat. We also have two cats who are chewers, so having the collection in a closed space where we can keep the cats out is essential.

I also like to set up dioramas in there. In a normal year we’d have a small party around Xmas for friends and the pony room gets decorated and an Xmas diorama set up for the occasion. Everyone likes coming through and seeing the display.

Pony Corral / Re: Powder Pose
« on: May 02, 2020, 04:41:07 AM »
I agree, I think it was because it’s a difficult pose to play with for a child, rather like Seashell’s pose. While I love them both now, I do remember being frustrated by them as a child because Seashell couldn’t do anything active and Powder couldn’t look at anything without basically lying down on her chest.

Pony Corral / Re: Pony Packing Tips
« on: April 25, 2020, 04:36:16 AM »
If they’re going to be packed for awhile, I would put some folded tissue paper between their legs to help them keep their shape. Easier than trying to fix wonky legs later on. Otherwise everything above sounds good.
