Title: Your favourite quotes?
Post by: Nightbow on October 12, 2015, 12:42:48 PM
I have an assignment of making a 10–20 second video and I want to hear your favourite quotes. They can be funny, profound, or whatever! Please share. :)

oh goodness. I could be here all day.

“It is not genius, nor glory, nor love that reflects the greatness of the human soul — it is kindness" (Henri-Dominique Lacordaire)

"The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears this is true."
James Branch Cabell

""I am a hero. It is a trade, no more, like weaving or brewing, and like them it has its own tricks and knacks and small arts. There are ways of perceiving witches, and knowing of poison streams; there are certain weak spots that all dragons tend to have, and certain riddles that hooded strangers tend to set you. But the true secret in being a hero lies in knowing the order of things. The swineherd cannot already be wed to the princess when he embarks on his adventures, nor can the boy knock on the witch's door when she is already away on vacation. The wicked uncle cannot be found out and foiled before he does something wicked. Things must happen when it is time for them to happen. Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a very long time, but not forever. The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story." Prince Lir

"There are no happy endings, because nothing ends." Schmendrick
- Peter S. Beagle

"It's a rare man who is taken for what he truly is...We are not always what we seem, and hardly ever what we dream."
(Are you happy, magician?) "Men don't always know when they are happy; but, I think so."

"I know you. If I were blind I would know what you are."

"It's a rare man who is taken for what he truly is … There is much misjudgment in the world. … We are not always what we seem, and hardly ever what we dream."

"She is a woman, Your Highness, and that's riddle enough."

"If I do not return, think of me. Farewell."

"Remember what I told you about time," it said. "When I was alive, I believed — as you do — that time was at least as real and solid as myself, and probably more so. I said 'one o'clock' as though I could see it, and 'Monday' as though I could find it on the map; and I let myself be hurried along from minute to minute, day to day, year to year, as though I were actually moving from one place to another. Like everyone else, I lived in a house bricked up with seconds and minutes, weekends and New Year's Days, and I never went outside until I died, because there was no other door. Now I know that I could've walked through the walls.""

"I did not know that I was so empty, to be so full."

"As for you and the things you said and didn't say, she will remember them all, when men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits."

"Your true task has just begun, and you may not know in your life if you have succeeded in it, but only if you fail."

"Your name is a golden bell hung in my heart.  I would break my body to pieces to call you once by your name!"

"No sorrow will live in my heart as long as that joy — save one, and I thank you for that, too."

"I do not think that I will ever see you again, but I will try to do what would please you if you knew....""

^^^the above are all quotes from The Last Unicorn. I LOVE that book SO MUCH!!! *swoon*

"you do not get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate."

"To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded."
- Emerson

I will have many, many more by the end of the day. if you'd like them. I live for literature...

Here's a classic for you, from Black Beauty:
'Do your best,
And leave the rest.
'Twil come right,
Some day or night.'

It made a HUGE impression on me as a kid, and I still try to go by it today. :)

and another, from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books(it's in most of them)

"There is no One True Way"
-meaning everyone has the right to their own religion, and since we are all human, we owe each other respect, even if we believe something different.  It is the foundation for the country of Valdemar in her books, and it comes up a lot as one of the things anyone moving into the country has to agree to; as long as a persons' Religion causes no actual harm to another being, you can't persecute them.
You can't get in their face, or force them away, or cause them harm, even if their religion believes in something *completely different* then yours.  (I really wish this was true in the real world!)

The pettiest will be generous
And the most craven will be brave
Nothing improves a reputation
Like confinement to a grave!

It must've been a dream house, I was asleep when I bought it!

Nice collection. :) Some of these I recognize, some were new to me.

Quotes? Why quotes, out of all things?

Our exercise was a very simple animation made with Adobe After Effects depicting a rolling wave increasing in saturation as these words were displayed:

Sometimes you loose
Sometimes you win
What counts is what is left

Making a similar animation for our assignment was enough to pass, so I wanted to keep it simple yet focus on a solid idea. I ended up using this silly piece:

I want to be the reason that you smile
When you look down at your phone
And walk into a lamp post

So I went with a passing cityscape during sunset with the words displayed like they were typed out, only to be interrupted by a rushing lamppost that stops and flickers mid-screen before scurrying away. :) It's not time to hand it in just yet though.

Nice. Creative and humorous, I love it. Best of luck with the project.

Sorry if I came of as aggressive, I just really don't fancy the whole quoting business. It's mainly due to people posting pictures after pictures on Facebook with a sunset plus a quote - that 'somehow' was always in italics - in hopes of thinking they look wise or something, I don't know.

No no, I totally get that. I hate when people are stealing other people's materials to look smart. I also hate turning in things I did not make myself in its entirety but alas, when you have an assignment you need to prioritise; I could have spent the entire week pondering the perfect original saying when I am only really just being graded for implementing the necessary parts. :| It kind of sucks because as a future front end web developer, you need to know just taking materials is not okay, but thankfully at least our lecturers make sure to remind us of that every so often.

It's just a matter of one course at a time, I guess. In my next assignment for this course I need to produce and edit a video myself. Now that will be a challenge, but the result will be entirely my own. :D

I like your personal quotes Hannah. A little extra effort goes a long way, and feels meaningful too. That and, well, I know I have said some weird things too and I try to scribble them down when I do so that I may go back and laugh at them. Being a scatterbrain has its upsides. Too bad my slip-ups translate so badly to English.
