G1 symbol charms
« on: January 14, 2023, 11:25:14 AM »
Hello ^.^

I got the idea yesterday to make symbol charms. This was the test batch, and things went wrong, but that's why you have a test batch. They're made with polymer clay. I mixed the colors myself, Blue Belle's is a too dark. I went off pictures in the Wiki because I don't think I have these ponies. I made the 6 CP ponies.

I made a mistake (wasn't thinking) and baked them under a tile, so some of them smooshed a bit. Then I wanted to use UV resin to seal them and things went way wrong  The resin cured in the sun but remained sticky so I looked up how to fix it. A video of a popular resin artist suggested alcohol, but she had 91% while I only have 50%. It reduced the stickiness some, but they are still pretty sticky. Also, the brush I used to paint on the resin left some hairs, the cotton ball I used for the alcohol left some fibers and the resin pooled in places. You can see it the most on Minty's. Here they are.

I'm going to try again and use polyurethane varnish and a different brush. If anyone has any symbol requests, I'm game :) If I can make them better I might start selling them but that's a thought for another day. Despite the flaws, I hope people like them :)

They're cute!

The thing with UV resin is that if it's still sticky, you can leave it in the sun longer (or under a stronger UV light) and it will eventually cure harder.  If I recall correctly, you live in a sunny place so just leave them on the windowsill for a few days and see if that helps.  UV resin works best when the UV rays can penetrate whatever you're making with it (which is why those molds are usually clear) so having it seal in the clay makes it hard for the rays to go all the way through the resin, which is why it will take longer to cure completely but with a bit of patience and lots of sunlight, it will do it for you. :)

Thanks everyone :lovey:

Thanks for the tip! I did leave them in the window and they did harden more, there is still a very slight stickiness to them but it's not very noticeable. I also watched a video where the specific type of resin I used was blamed for the stickiness. I'm more upset that the resin pooled in places and it's edge shy too. I know it will gather to the lower points because it's a liquid but it really dodged a lot of the symbol part of the charms. I only wanted to try it because I had the resin anyway for miniatures and a very popular charm artist I follow uses UV resin to seal her charms and they turn out lovely. She also uses the sun (she's in Australia) and she says it takes about two hours for them to cure.
