spray sealant questions
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:33:44 AM »
Such as pros and cons to spray vs painted on?  Your fave brands and least fave?   How many coats do you use?   Anything else I left out?  I bought a couple of them to try out but wanted to get some feedback as well.  TY!!!!

I've only ever used testors dullcote, and I love it. I've heard too many nightmares about other products.

I used matte Mod Podge when I first started customizing. It worked well but it takes work to make it smooth since it's painted on.
Now I use Testors Dullcote Spray which is much easier and I like the look much better.

This ^

And I use quite a few layers. I spray after FBR, and in between details of whatever I'm working on.

I live in the land of "the sealer is ruining these ponies" (stop using Mod Podge, people! >.< ) and Testors is the way to go.

I also do several layers between painting stages.

Right. I spray after the FBR. Then I paint some details and spray again. Then more details,  spray,  etc.

Totally agree. Every time I've used Mod Podge for something it ended up staying tacky (and it's water-washable - not that great if you plan on using water on a pony's hair or something). Krylon's acrylic sealer has cracked and yellowed on the one pony I used it for. Poor :muffin: Pony  :(

Testor's Dullcote is so much better, and sealing between layers makes things way easier if you have to fix an eye or cutie mark.  ^.^

Testor's dullcote all the way n_n; Though for glossier details like eyes I will brush on Triple Thick if I need to

Testors Dullcoat all the way for me.  After you paint the FBR, spray the pony, then do the eyes and symbol.  I use Mod Podge Gloss for the eyes, though I have just recently found Triple Thick at my Michaels, so now I can start using that, when my Gloss Mod Podge goes out...in about 30 years.  xD

The majority of customizers I think use Testor's Dullcote. I've still not had a chance to try it myself (it always seems so expensive )
Personally I am currently using The Army Painter Anti-Shine Matt Varnish. I've found it to be very good so far. As long as you're careful to keep coats thin (like with all paint, sealant ect), it gives a lovely finish. I usually do around three coats.
It comes in a 400ml can which I got at the time for about £7.99 on ebay (though the cheapest one I can find at the moment is £10.99 )
I will have to get some Testor's at some point and compare them.
I must be one of the few that has never used Mod Podge  :lookround:
