Yuri!! On Ice. I seriously haven't been this invested in an anime and it's characters in so long. I'm really loving it.

Yes!SpoilerI've probably re-watched the ending of ep.9 like 10x. So perfect. So many feels.
I'm really enjoying that throughout the series so far, how during these types of scenes where you'd typically see the character respond like "No, that's not what I meant!" *cue spazz-out*, that these 2 just so calmly and completely accept each other every time. There is no resistance to or denial of their feelings which are slowly growing stronger and it's beautiful. :enthralled:
I'm dyyying to see the new ep tomorrow to see the scenes from the teaser in context.
SpoilerOmg they got engaged!!! And like that plot twist about what happened at last year's Grand Prix was totally unexpected and puts everything that's happened since in a whole new light! I swear this show pretty much saved an otherwise crappy year.

I really want Yuuri to do well considering Victor's promise.SpoilerI'm a little conflicted on who I want to win. Part of me is curious to see what happens if Yuuri doesn't get gold but part of me thinks he really needs it more than anyone else. All the skaters are talented and deserving in their own ways. Yurio has worked hard and really wants to prove himself. Phichit is such a great person and it would mean so much for his country if he won. Chris was so close last year and is probably reaching the end of his career soon too. Otabek has a lot of drive and is just beginning to show that he's not as stoic as everyone thinks. Even JJ is just a really talented skater. It's going to be an exciting last 2 episodes.
YoI Episode 11 SpoilersSpoilerThis week's episode was particularly heart wrenching. I can't believe JJ choked so hard that he got last place. Also 4th place isn't too bad but I really hoped he would do better than that. At least it's only like a 20 point difference that he can hopefully make up in the next episode. But what Yuri said to Victor at the end of the episode has me all kinds of worried.
YOISpoiler"See You NEXT LEVEL" !!!!!!
Oh my we are so getting another season.
The ending was so beautiful! Some expected things and some unexpected. What will I do with my wednesdays now! Haha!
Recently finished watching Free! Iwatobi Swim Club (both seasons) and La Corda D'Oro (both seasons). I recommend both!. Season 2 of Free! has a "Marathon View" mode where it cuts out the opening and closing sequences between the episodes so it's just one big long episode with no interruptions. It's kind of fabulous and I wish they would do that with some other shows.
Currently watching Moribito. So far it's better than I expected it would be.
My and my mom finished My Love Story (Ore Monogatari!! is the Japanese title) and we LOVED it. It's hilarious, cute, and serious at the same time. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes romantic comedies. It's very unique. It really is unique! I'm curious about the live action version, too. The author of the original manga wrote one of my favorite series ever, High School Debut. I wish there was an anime version of it so more people knew about it! It's also a romantic comedy and very funny. I wish some of her other works were translated into English, too. (Aozora Yell is one, I think)
Haruna - I read High School Debut a long time ago and really liked it. :) I knew both stories were by the same person so I had a feeling I'd like My Love Story. It also had a good dub on the English release. My mom watched it with me and she cannot watch subtitles because they go too fast for her, so we watched it dubbed. It was very well done. I actually wish more anime was dubbed these days and it's not. There is a huge world of anime out there my mom would really enjoy as long as it was in English. I'd really like for her to watch Victorian Romance Emma but no dub sadly. :(High School Debut is so awesome, isn't it! I haven't listened to the English dub of My Love Story, but I should try it. We haven't finished it yet and I'm curious how it will end . . .
My favorite from last year though was Bungou Stray Dogs.Agreed. I hope they make a season 3.
Because I adored Love Stage so much, I ordered the manga. I cannot wait until it arrives!
Anyone ever seen Yona of the Dawn? My mom and I are currently watching that one.Yes! My sister loves it. I'll admit that when I first saw it I was just so-so with it, but on a second watching (thanks to my obsessed sister) I've grown to really like it despite some of its flaws. I've realized it's a good story with very likeable characters and a complex villain, which you don't always get these days. It's also really funny; I especially love some of the cute scenes with Shin-Ah, the way Haku teases Kija, Jae-Ha and Hak's interactions (have you gotten to Jae-Ha yet?), and almost every line of Yoon's, the genius bishounen. XD
When my Log Horizon kick filters out, I suspect I'll drift back to Fullmetal Panic.Fullmetal Panic! I love that show

Fumoffu. Fumoffu O.o.Fumoffu was a bit strange, I'll admit ^^; Sousuke running around in a Bonta-kun was hilarious, but I did miss having an actual plot, heh, and the tonal shift from the first series was off-putting. So anyone considering watching FMP should know that going in . . .
My fav for now is Sword Art Online, I'm going to start rewatching it this week, so I'm all ready for the movie next month!!! Haha. I am making a special trip to San Francisco just to see it (well, I also plan to finally get some decent water Pokémon, haha, too!)There's a movie?!? I did not know this! That's so exciting! And San Francisco for Pokemon -- can't beat that! I love Sword Art Online, especially the first season and then the arc with Sinon (I'm forgetting if that's the third season or not).

Fumoffu. Fumoffu O.o.
I'm watching one called My Love Story. I'm four episodes in and it's quite funny.
Sinon is in SAO II, I *think* its season 2, but because the original SAO is 2 major story arcs, it's hard to keep track of! :)My fav for now is Sword Art Online, I'm going to start rewatching it this week, so I'm all ready for the movie next month!!! I wonder who I can drag there with me . . . Ha ha, it sounds like you're ready for Pokemon hunting! That's exciting. I hear you on the battery backups -- the game drains battery so fast! I realized that again on a trip I took this weekend. Having the game open for five minutes pretty much took away 2 percent of my battery each time
But yeah, the new movie, "Ordinal Scale" is being shown in subtitle at some theaters in the US on March 9th, either independent theater showings, or as part of the ones that do the Fathom Events! We are getting it just a short time after Japan is, so there should be a lot online about it if you google "SAO movie" :)
I dont get water pokemon where I live, and I don't drive, haha, so I've been waiting for an excuse to go to the bay! I have 2 battery back ups for my phone that are at least 4 full charges each, and I plan to clear out my pokemon before I go, so I have plenty of room. I'm not worried about having pokeballs because Ive been told pier 39 and fishermen's wharf have like 15 pokestops between them, but I do plan to get a googleplay card so I can buy incubators since I'll be doing a lot of walking!
I have recently just discovered Brave Police J-Decker and am six episodes in. Very fun cartoon. :)I've never heard of it! What's it like?
I am still working on Sailor Moon seasons 1 and 2 both in the 90's anime and Crystal. I'm thinking about maybe watching Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro.Ooh, definitely recommend My Neighbor Totoro! I don't like Ponyo as much but it's at least worth a watch. I'd recommend all Studio Ghibli movies.
Can I just say that I *love* how there was an entire conversation had via spoilers? LOL!
I'm an old school DBZ girl, and I will always go back to it, but lately I've been binge watching (pretty much every other month... it's a cruel obsession lol) Log Horizon <3 When my Log Horizon kick filters out, I suspect I'll drift back to Fullmetal Panic. I love me some epic series, but those short ones are really good for binge watching, you know? I also started working my way through One Piece a couple months ago.
And for general recommendations to anyone: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is amazing. The art direction and editing, sound editing and music, and plot are all fantastic. It uses story-within-story frames for most of the first season (the rakugo stories relate to what's going on in the characters' lives external to the theatre, and one of the main characters recounts his history, with more rakugo inserted, for most of the first season). It's heart-breaking, but probably one of the best developed series I've seen in years. The amount of care and detail that goes into each episode is movie-level.I totally want to see this! I started the first episode and it was much more interesting than I'd think a show about rakugo could be. I haven't watched more yet because they're longer than your average anime episode, but I definitely plan to.

I can't find the old anime thread so I thought I'd make a new one since recently I've started watching anime again.
Some I'm watching rn:
Yuri!!! On Ice - I can't recommend this one enough! It's about a figure skater named Yuri and his coach. The story is great, the characters are well developed, and the music is fantastic.I'm not usually a fan of sports animes (I'm more into magical girl anime with the occasional slice of life) but this one has got me hooked.SpoilerAlso the main ship actually becomes canon
Kiss Him Not Me! - This one is really funny. It's about this overweight girl that's a fan of BL that loses the weight when she gets depressed over a character death and suddenly becomes attractive.
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun - This one is also funny. It's about a Manga artist and this girl that has a crush on him but can't spit it out.

I start check some anime out, you mention I right now hook "Kiss him not me"...
I had co working interduce me "Yawn of the Dawn"The Ouran manga is hilarious :) I was in the doctor's office today reading it and giggling to myself like a crazy person. I haven't read The Ancient Magus Bride; I'll have to look that up; I haven't heard of it!
I wait next manga to release...
How is Ouran Manga? I not yet read that manga series...
Have you read "the Ancient Magus Bride"? I came across sample and hooked! I saw YouTube work stories into anime which I dying to see!
I finished My Neighbor Totoro and Whisper of the Heart. I enjoyed all 3 Studio Ghibli movies that I've seen so far. :)Studio Ghibli is awesome! I think the only bad Studio Ghibli movie I've ever seen is Tales of Earthsea, and even that has its moments of beauty. Recently I learned that Studio Ghibli paired up with a Danish (?) director to make The Red Turtle, a film about a shipwrecked man. I want to see that eventually. It looks beautiful but possibly too artsy!

I've been itching to get into Black Lagoon once I finish up Brave Police. Can anyone tell me if it's good?
I've been itching to get into Black Lagoon once I finish up Brave Police. Can anyone tell me if it's good?
Black Lagoon is a personal favourite. The voice work, music, and animation are all top notch. There's also a lot of social commentary relevant to the era (mostly pertaining to Japanese work culture, but there are some more international messages as well). I will say this, however: it is quite violent, and there's a really disturbing arc surrounding two kids that use the code names Hansel and Gretel. If you're sensitive to that kind of thing, I would avoid that arc when it comes up, because it's pretty disturbing.
I haven't yet seen the mini-series based around Roberta (a secondary character they encounter in the series), but it's on my shelf to be watched.
They also announced a new manga is coming out and started being released in May. Simultaneously, the anime is being re-broadcast as a tie-in, so it's possible that another season is due somewhere down the line (several years from now, anyway).

I love The Fantastic Adventures of Unico and Unico in the Island of Magic. Those two and "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp" (which came out sometime in the early 80s and I have yet to find it on DVD--boo!) were the first anime I can remember seeing as a child. I didn't know they were anime until I was older.

I didn't know Unico was considered anime for a long time either. I just knew it was a unique movie that my grandparents had. Do you know if there is anime of Ali Baba? My grandmother loved cartoons with characters that were drawn with eyes and I have a vague memory of watching a cartoon about Ali Baba and his wife but they looked like children instead of adults. I think there was also a Cinderella one as well.
I watched Ponyo again and noticed a few things I missed the first time I saw it.

And now we're watching Your Lie in April, which is making me hideously angry.Your Lie In April . . . so many feels. Do you mean the lack of understanding for Kaori and her situation? At times I was irritated to see how Kousei treated her (though she isn't always great towards him). I enjoyed watching the series, but it has so many emotional ups and downs I haven't rewatched it or I'd cry too much, lol. There are some great moments in it, though, and I would definitely recommend it like your friend did -- it explores love and loss and some deep stuff. And as a piano player, too, I find it interesting.
It's supposed to be feel-good, slice-of-life, but the premise behind the story, and the lack of understanding from the main character's friends, is making me rage. But I'll stick it out. Because my friend told me to. :|

There are some great moments in it, though, and I would definitely recommend it like your friend did -- it explores love and loss and some deep stuff. And as a piano player, too, I find it interesting.
Ah. Actually. More the fact that Kousei's friends pushed him back into piano, while at least two of them knew of his history/the situation with his mother. I get that they were trying to help him, and that they're just teenagers, but it was extremely misguided in my opinion, and his "recovery" didn't seem particularly sincere or realistic to me. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, and I did finish it, but I feel like there were some seriously terrible things that people did to that kid.
The final roof scene could have resolved a lot of those things for me, but obviously that didn't happen. I found the final concert and the letter to both be a cop-out by comparison. Honestly, the amount of trauma visited on Kousei, and the remark that his mother's friend made about his "moving on" made me feel pretty sick watching the show. I think I must not have been the target audience, because I didn't find it romantic at all. It felt very exploitative.
We started March Comes in Like a Lion/Sangatsu no lion immediately after, and while it has some very similar themes (doing something you're good at because of familial pressure, or because you think you're obligated to because you're good at it; loss of family members and the grieving process that follows; problematic love stories and relationships that aren't 100% honest), it handles those themes with a lot more delicacy and skill.
Edit: I just remembered we have spoiler tags. XD;
Spoilers of what I felt about Your Lie in April:SpoilerThe main thing I hated was that she decided to make her "legacy" a relationship with someone who didn't know she was dying. That, being the entire plot of the show, made me really angry. Among other things. It was a very clumsy telling, to me.
The lie wasn't some small thing like was implied to me when my friend recommended it (seriously, she made it sound like a mistaken identity or something). Living to enjoy your last days to their fullest is fine, but knowing that you're dying, and intentionally seeking someone out to attach to so that they will feel the pain of your death and never forget it, is a terrible, horrible, selfish thing to do. Even more-so when it's clear that that person has some sort of trauma that they're still recovering from in their recent past. To make a small-scale comparison, it's like the idea of rubbing lemon juice into a paper-cut, knowing that the lemon is half-rotten and will likely cause sepsis.
So I didn't find their relationship romantic as a result of that, but rather saw it as an emotionally abusive counter-point to the situation with Kousei's mum's physical and verbal abuse.
I didn't find his reaction to her admission that she was ill unrealistic (his desire not to visit her, his feelings of awkwardness seeing her in hospital), but I did find his recovery and acceptance of her lie to be rather premature and unrealistic given how much she'd brow-beat him into joining her on the stage. I also hated that Tsubaki knew about the abuse, but still thought that pushing him at Kaori and the piano was a good idea.
If she had confessed the whole situation to him on the roof before his final concert and her surgery, I might've been okay with the show in the end, because she at least owned up to what she had been doing all along, and decided to take responsibility for it. But she didn't, and continued to leave him with what she knew was false hope. As such, I found the vision he had of her during the concert to be in poor taste, and the letter that she gave him to be a cowardly thing to do. She didn't take responsibility for what happened between them. She didn't give him the closure he deserved, and never got from his mother's death and abuse. It was clumsy, as a story, and undignified.
I'm thinking about watching The Secret World of Arietty.

I like that one too. I watch and episode or two every now and then.
Currently I am watching Elegant Yokai apartment life and Saiyuki reload blast on crunchyroll. Its been so long since I watched Saiyuki that I forgot what the hell is going on. wasn't that one from the 90's?
Hehe, I've seen a lot of clips of Ghost Stories, it's hilarious from what I've seen. Is it worth watching?
For those of you asking about Kimi no na wa - It's a movie with feels. We have a lot of similar tastes! I loved Koe no Katachi (anime and manga version) and Akatsuki no Yona, and Kaichou wa maid-sama. And Pretear! It's been a while since I've seen that one.
Same goes for Koe no Katachi.
And yes, I too loved Akatsuki no Yona.
If you're in to the reversed harems, like Ouran high school and Watashi ga motete Dousunda you may also like Yamato nadeshiki henge and Kaichou wa maid-sama.
Even Pretear has a nice ending :)
If anyone here subscribes to Crunchyroll DO NOT visit the website right now. It has been hacked and will automatically download a malicious software onto your computer called "Crunchy Viewer" or something like that. Thanks for the warning! I watch a lot of anime on Crunchyroll. Good thing they're back now.
I'm lucky because I didn't visit the website today before finding out about this, hope you all see this before, as well!
EDIT: According to CR's Twitter, it's okay now and should be fine to visit.
I was watching Clannad and loving it/crying to death, but I took a break from watching it while I was moving. The other day I just went back onto Amazon Prime to watch it again and they've removed it! I own season 1 on DVD but I was watching season 2 and now I guess I need to buy it on DVD, too. :( Anime is so expensive. :( :( :(

I really like From Up On Poppy Hill. It's a super cute slice of life.
In Your Corner of the World was harder to watch because you know what's coming and you spend the whole time wondering "is this the part? or is this the part? is this the part?!" which makes it a bit stressful. And because it's a slice of life during WWII, there are some sad parts, but it was still really good.
What are everyone’s thoughts on In Your Corner of the World and From Up On Poppy Hill?I started to read the In Your Corner of the World manga, but I don't really like the art style so I haven't finished it. I started watching Spirit Pact too in my random Crunchyroll viewing but I didn't get into it really yet. I will probably go back to it as my anime watching is always dictated by my current mood and what appeals to me as a result...sometimes I am more interested in magical type things, sometimes slice of life...I kinda feel like something got lost in translation with Spirit Pact. Its not the greatest of stories but I still liked it.
I agree about it being Chinese - but I am guessing it could be Taiwanese?
I did see a couple of episodes of magical girl Ore which is possibly the most crack thing I've seen all year but maybe just too crack for me to take it seriously enough to actually watch it all...
Though I did watch the whole of the Mummy anime...so...who knows?
Yeah that scene at the end made me wonder why the movie was only rated PG-13. But I guess it might be good for kids (older kids) to see the movie to understand the history. Maybe the parents could just turn it off right before the end?
I’m also looking for anime recommendations. My Walmart stores are starting to stock more Studio Ghibli movies since they’ve moved from Disney to Ghibli Kids.Honestly, I only liked The Cat returns, Howls moving Castle and Spirited away. The one with the little people was good too. Normally I hate subtitles but for some reason, I really do not like the dubbing of these. I know they are all done by famous actors but is like the voices do not match the characters.
I'm now rewatching Ouran. I still think it's totally crack, although I also think the questions it raises about gender roles are interesting. What with Haruhi not really caring about being mistaken for a boy, and not fitting the stereotypes...and all the other things going on.

I suppose having a crossdressing father helped.
I’m been considering Wedding Peach. Is there a place to watch it in English?

aaaa I would definitely recommend Wedding Peach!!! I finally got round to watching it this year and it's so good :D I'm pretty sure the dub's online, I'm not sure if there's any official streaming places for it though (I prefer subs). I do know the DVDs are out of print >_< Having a heck of a time trying to find the ones I'm missing.
good luck finding it!! It's really good!
I've been watching Emma: A Victorian Romance. It's cute so far.
It doesn't have a dub, so I have to read it, but I sometimes wonder how the translation is because the words at the bottom won't say a name but the character speaking clearly said "Emma" while talking to or about her to someone else. I've also noticed spelling and grammatical errors in the subtitles so sometimes it takes a minute to figure out what they were trying to say. However, if I could ever manage to break into voice acting it's one that I'd love to do.
Add to this that I hate the compulsive need by some series to rename the characters. It drives me up the wall whenever anyone refers to Sailor Moon as Serena, because that is so not her name. I am less bothered by Ash and company because getting hold of Japanese Pokemon episodes is a lot harder to do...but the principle is the same. Is Satoshi really that hard to say? I wonder...
What you call jelly we call jam and the idea of jelly in a doughnut is just....But its soo good! Its normally grape jelly but there other kinds like lemon or apple. There are also boston cream filled donuts which I guess would be close to a custard? or a pudding but...different. Im not sure, exactly, what boston cream is.
yeah, I wish the JP version of Pokemon was easier to find. It's weird how hard it is to find subbed episodes, given how huge Pokemon is.
I have been away for several days. I caught part of an episode of Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir and it looked pretty interesting. I found out it’s on Netflix. I guress I’ll be watching that one now. :)

Rewatching Dragon Ball Z The Cell Games Saga, and Goku's death still makes me
Apparently there is another Dragonball movie coming.... this one focuses on Brolly.... I'm like, what, there's still super saiyans left to kick each other around? How many times are you gonna power up before you implode the universe? Give us more Piccolo!!!!
For this season on Crunchyroll, I have been watching:
Cells at work - Humanized versions of body cells. Its different.
How to summon a demon Lord - guy surrounded by scantly clad, girls with huge boobs usually isn't my thing but the story has kept me entertained. A shut in wakes up as his character in a role play video game world.
Phantom of the twilight - Two girls from japan or maybe China? arrive in London for college. The one girl ends up learning about her great grandmothers spirit hunting past.
Bed and Breakfast for spirits - second season

I did watch "The Devil is a Part-Timer" which was very quirky and nuts. But I think in a good way.

OMG that show is hysterical!!!!
IMHO DBZ is popular because for the longest time, that was what was dubbed on American TV for the average male viewer. It was broadcast in the evenings on Cartoon Network during AdultSwim, so it was not marketed as "kids' cartoons". Pokemon was for kids, Sailormoon was for girls, the other stuff had too much Japanese culture...
Consider it "cartoon football". That's basically what the demographic enjoying it ALSO watched...
Conversely the original Dragonball was broadcast at 5am... so kids were not up and watching it until they really loved it. I really loved the first show, when Goku grew up, it got kind of boring to me.
oooooh Toonami, that's right! I vaguely remember that! I totally did not like Gundam so I wasn't paying attention...
DBZ has plot in the manga. Unfortunately in episode format, this meant SO.MANY.FILLER episodes because I think the manga was still ongoing at that time? Common problem in anime...
I wanted to get into Gundam because Midorikawa Hikaru is one of the voice artists I've always followed, but I couldn't. Heero was just...such...a whiny boy. xD
In the UK Toonami had DBZ, Tenchi and Gundam Wing if I remember right. I loved Tenchi despite the dub and obvious cuts but hated DBZ and couldn't get into Gundam. I never saw Sailor Moon in English so I dunno what channel or wherr it aired here. Never knew it was meant to be Toonami.
For me DBZ had no plot. It was just a series of increasingly unrealistic battles while people stood around describing the fights. I never saw any other DB though. That put me off.
I need an actual plot...godmodding fights aren't my thing really...

Huh? I grew up watching Gundam Wing and I don't recall him being whiny. He was manipulated into killing a whole plane full of pacifists but I definitely wouldn't classify him as whiny. If anything, that boy needs to talk more. I've watched the dub with subtitles to see how close the translations (supposedly) are and I didn't think they were too far off. Maybe the actual Japanese has him whinier than they dubbed him to be.

Eh.
I wouldn't say that Sailor Moon was meant for Toonami.
It hit local tv in North America in 1995/1996. It bombed tho. XD

Eh.My sister and I would sometimes watch it because it came on right after Pokemon; I feel like we probably had to get to school or something, though, like it was early in the morning. Did it really bomb? I can see why it might not do well overall commercially, since I remember the Sailor Moon dolls being on clearance on the shelves. But the series, I think, was pretty popular and a "gateway drug" for lots of anime fans? (at least female ones of a certain age). We'd play Sailor Scouts with our neighbors (I threw leaves in the air for my brilliant Sailor Jupiter attack . . . ) My sister fell head-over-heels for the series and bought every DVD, even the Stars series, which was hard back then as it was only released in Japan and she was like ten years old, lol. This is random, but she used to commission me for 25 cents a picture to draw pony version of the Sailor Scouts, ha ha. Those were the days.

I’m still watching Miraculous Ladybug on Netflix but I’m getting close to the end of the episodes on there. It ends Season 2 with “Captain Hardrock” but there are more Season 2 episodes listed online. I hope they get added to Netflix soon.

None of it is on netflix here yet though my databox at home has recorded most of the series so far (it is airing on Disney channel here and had got to Malediktator the last time I was home). I heard a rumour that in the US the rest of season 2 will be on netflix once it's finished airing around the world. It can';t be far off that now, so maybe December? I admit I may have watched the rest of season 2 already >.> but I would like to do it properly. Hopefully the US dvd will come out soon as with s1 the US dvd is better than the UK. It has both language tracks and I want the French as well as the English.
Animewise, aside from being sidetracked by the Shinsengumi Taiga Drama (I really shouldn't watch drama series which contain so much emotive stuff, sigh) and rewatching the Gokusen drama (which is very formulaic but I still like it) I have randomly been dipping into episodes here and there. I tend to go through anime phases and drama phases. I finally have Sengoku Basara to hand, though, so I will soon be watching that to add to my binge watching of all and any sengoku related anime just because.
Oh yes. And at home I was watching Harukanaru Toki no Naka De (in English version Haruka, beyond the stream of time). I have a really special bond with this series overall for a lot of reasons, not least because of the seiyuu live events - but it was kind of nostalgic to watch it again. It sometimes gets compared with Fushigi Yuugi as though they're somehow the same but since ancient China and Heian Japan are not the same, I tend to disagree... Haruka was never dubbed though it was released with subs in the US and the manga was translated too...I think if anyone had tried to dub it I would've thrown fakies at them. It's bad enough they turned Sefuru into "Sefle" and Ikutidaru into Icktidarl...and the onmyouji Yasuaki into a "sorcerer" in the synopses. The basis for the original Haruka isn't as fun as that for the later games but it's the only one thus far to have proper manga and therefore a proper full length anime. I guess I'll get around to watching the Haruka 3 specials again at some point. Still bummed that Haruka 5 never became an anime. That would've been awesome...

I watched "Big Fish and Begonia" the other night. I liked it, but the ending made me cry. Though, watching the credits made the sad part of the ending a little better because there's a random scene hidden in them.
I finished all of the Ladybug and Cat Noir episodes on Netflix. Now I must wait for the rest of Season 2.
I think this is a great song from the Christmas Special.

Up there with angsty Adrien/Chat.
On another note, they say often that Chloe is behind the akumatisation of lots of people, which is true, but on balance, I think Marinette accidentally causes it just as often by not realising things until much later.

Anything involving the Shinsengumi is automatically heartbreaking. Because as it goes on, they almost all just die. One by one. And what makes it worse is that they really did just die, one by one. :/ Having just finished the Shinsengumi drama I am still emotionally traumatised by the whole experience. Albeit isn't it the second season that's really the gutwrencher in Hakuouki terms? I can't remember that anyone actually died in season 1, they just became, you know, othered.
I like Hakuouki but am always weirded out about the ochimizu and the oni. And most of all the fact there is/was a museum in Japan of the Bakumatsu which was using Hakuouki as a way to tell Japanese history...xD

Susumu Yamazaki gets killed by Hijikata. Hence why I hate Hijikata, when it got to that episode I removed the disc from my PS4 and put Ouran Highschool Host Club on to the Halloween episode.
I'm waiting impatiently for the Fruits Basket remake that should actually follow the entire manga series. Not sure if they'll just pick up where the last one left off or if they'll start completely from the beginning but I still want to see it either way.

Holy cats!! I shouldn't go on the Arena when I'm still half-tired, I totally misread your earlier post XP Silly me. I had no idea a reboot was actually planned!
Sorta sceptical about the note that it'll have a different art style... but hopefully it'll just hem closer to Takaya's current art style instead of being totally different? Otherwise this sounds very promising, I'm excited!
They'd pretty much have to restart it, I think. That certain plot twist the anime didn't use (not their fault, I think the anime ended before it was revealed?) would be really hard to write around without just completely changing the story.
oh man yes, I'm with you on Momiji. I stopped watching around when he was introduced so idk, maybe he gets less annoying later on, but I found his voice in the original series really grating x_x;Yeah, it's such a shame because Momiji as a character overall isn't entirely annoying, but those scenes...Put it this way, I totally understand on pretty much every occasion why Kyou hit him. I would probably hit him too.
I understand what you mean about Momiji now. I've only seen 2 episodes of Fruit Baskets with Momiji in them and I already find him a little annoying.

yeah, I wish the JP version of Pokemon was easier to find. It's weird how hard it is to find subbed episodes, given how huge Pokemon is.
It's of course possible to buy it from Japan, but subbing doesn't seem to happen much. I think there may be a lot of pressure on the licencing aspect and fansubbers don't want to risk it. Countries that speak English get the doctored cut US dubbed versions with the changed names and that's that.
I have only seen Pokemon in Japanese raw - either on TV in Japan or from Japanese DVD. I've never seen it fansubbed so can;t comment. But the fansubbing on Bleach was often really bad in terms of how they added in words and drama so I think sometimes it gets done in a rush to meet demand. Manga was the same.the pokemon fansubbing quality is quite good. i've not spotted any major errors, and if there has been any such as grammatical or if someone pointed an error out it was quickly fixed.
But I do think there are big licensing risks of fansubbing Pokemon.
@bladed - In my opinion there are a lot of anime and manga not adapted from some other thing but I may be misunderstanding your meaning on that. Although I am also interested in anime that represent historical eras or concepts because it crosses over into what I study...(I do draw the line at cute shoujo girls in the sengoku era mind you).
I totally understand the appeal of something with a wider reach than just the anime though. I keep talking about haruka xD which is several games, manga, drama, songs, live events...but so little anime in comparison to what exists (there are 17 volumes of manga but only some of that got animated into the 26 episode hachiyoushou anime).
I'm currently hooked on Akatsuki no Yona which happened totally by accident. But I really like it. My annoyance is that the anime stops at a point where I really want them to continue (hence now reading the manga, which is just making me want even more to see them do more anime, since only 8 volumes are currently animated from 28...)

there's definitely a lot of original anime - just feels like the popular seasonal ones that people talk about are all adaptations of manga or light novels, i mean. not saying it's a bad thing by any means, though!
kemono friends has some live events, too... stories unique to said lives, which is great. man i could talk about that series for days.

Just finished watching Skip Beat. It's cute, but I feel like they ended it in a weird spot. I think it's one that was made before the manga was finished so they could do a second season if they wanted.
I just finished the 2nd part of Season 2 of Ladybug at Cat Noir.Spoiler
Wow! :) I love how each episode adds more depth to the characters. My guess about Gabriel’s wish was correct and I feel more sympathy now seeing how desperate he is to make his wish come true and how much he cares about Adrien even when he’s Hawk Moth. Natalie seemed ill after she used the Peacock Miraculous, maybe if the miraculous is damaged it affects the person who tries to use it negatively?
I wonder if Gabriel and Adrien will ever detransform in front of each other and find out their secret identities? Whenever Master Fu opens the Miraculous box it looks like there are several miraculous that we haven’t seen the powers of yet.
I’m afraid I’m going to have to wait quite a while for Season 3 on Netflix.

We really ought to have a proper discussion on this ;)SpoilerI've never really hated Gabriel, I felt like S2 fleshed him out nicely as someone who is desperate, not evil. IN fact, I also realised something else. Even though he akumatises people, which is bad, there is always resolution, which is weirdly good. So when Ladybug and Chat Noir save the akumatised person, whatever the issue is that made them akumatised in the first place gets addressed and the people move on with their lives. Ironically, by making them all akuma, Gabriel is actually resolving society's various problems. Weird. I am assuming whatever hurt Nathalie is what really hurt Gabriel;s wife, and the fact Gabriel doesn't want Nathalie to use the peacock indicates he cares about her.
I think it's interesting too that Marinette has had interaction with Plagg a few times now, and that Plagg and Tiki know the real identities of the other's master but it's still a secret. I rather hope one of them will find out the other's secret in season 3, but I guess it depends. I think you're lucky you've been able to watch S.2 in an organised way, though. I have it all recorded on my box at home from Disney channel and POP but it took some time to get to that point and the airing schedule was nuts...
I'm still watching Fruits Basket anime. I just watched the episode where they went to the lake. I think it's one of my least favorite episodes so far. It seemed most of the episode was Yuki and Kyo arguing.
hey folks :) Do you maybe have a tip for me what to watch next ? Id like something like ... hm... lets say something with for example monsters, zombies, other bad guys or something else thrilling! Gimme some input please :PYou may already have seen it, but Re: Zero sprang to mind from your description. The main guy basically finds himself in a new world in which he gets killed a lot...kind of like a game reset when he has to then renegotiate the danger to survive to the next day. I admit that I got distracted and never did finish watching it, but I remember there are a lot of monsters and stuff.
Thank you both :) Ill try them out! Re: Zero especially sounds interesting!
I'm still working on the original Fruits Basket. I have around 7 episodes left. I found this trailer for the new series on YouTube.

There isn't really much I am interested in on Crunchyroll this season.
Only Monrose Mononokean 2, Boruto and Meji Tokyo Something (forgot the name). Lately the VPN hasn;t been working very well so I'm having a hard time trying to access it anyways - Except for Boruto. Apparently that is allowed to be shown in China..
I just got back from Okinawa and still had to use the VPN...kinda odd since they are all Japanese shows anyways.
I hadn't heard about the stuff with Vic. That surprises me because I've met him a couple of times at comic cons and he didn't come across like that at all. If anything, I thought he was gay because he's super flamboyant.
(And, seriously, check out the fringe on those pants!)

I don't know what exactly he's been accused of because I haven't seen any actual details-I've been looking and all it says is "sexual harassment" but nothing stating whether it's comments or touching or whatever people are claiming is harassment these days. I know guys that have been accused of sexual harassment because they touched a woman's arm to get her attention without her permission, so until I know more details I'm going to go with my personal experiences with him and judge him from that.

You should see some of the videos on YouTube with people backing him up. I’ve unsubscribed to two you tubers Geekdom101, and Foreverworld. Both are backing Monica Rial and Jaime Marchi only because they’re getting money from them two.
Like you I’m waiting for the details as well, plus Monica Rial has sexually assaulted someone who was a minor at the time.
Anyway to get back on topic so we don't get yelled at, I'm rewatching Sailor Moon.
On the other subject, I wasn't aware of anything like that but I don't watch dubs, and never will again. Fushigi Yuugi in English killed any interest I will ever have in watching a dub ever again. It's horrible. I still love Yuugi, it's a classic, but NOT in English.
I had some issues with a couple of my DVDs recently, but I haven't figured out whether it is my DVD player or the discs in question :/ Nothing lasts forever, though. I can no longer play my discs of Angelique Etoile because of them wearing out :/
...
I have watched Sailor Moon but not for a long time and only in Japanese. It was fine but I never totally understood all the hype around it.

Oh man. I remember in highschool my friend was all like "This anime is so great" in regards to FY, but I couldn't get into it because the dub was like nails on a chalkboard.
That said, anything I watched dubbed that I grew up on (read: before I was 14)... the dub is going to resonate with me even if the Japanese VAs are better.

I think I'm the same. The one exception to my dub ban is Tenchi because it was something I consider nostalgic watched as a teen rather than really seeing it as anime in a bigger genre. It was the first series I ever watched and the obvious sake dubbed as 'tea' amused me much.
Regarding the DVDs, I won't be throwing them out till I've tested them more :) I used to work in a library too so I learned various tricks to clean them but this isn't that, unfortunately :/ But it could be my player. Also I didn't mention in my first post that my defective DVDs that were new but worked on some players and not others-- so it could still be a reflection of the DVD and not necessarily the player. But it could be the player too!
Though rewatching Saiyuuki is high up on my to do list. Because it's awesome.
Don’t watch Monrose Monokean 3, with the sexual accusation against Vic Mignogna, Funimation has redubbed over his lines plus fired him along with another company. All thanks to Monica Rial and Jaime Marchi. His part in the anime is not very big. He's in like maybe 3 or 4 episodes as he is not one of the lead VA's.
If it was the Saiyuuki dub...maybe
I am in it for the seishi. Although Tamahome / Taka also has his moments
QuoteIf it was the Saiyuuki dub...maybe
Yeah, it was. I think I remember reading that the VA of the water sprite guy was fired for marrying a 13 year old girl or something like that?
I also remember thinking that the early seasons - the characters had different personalities then the later seasons. I don;t know if it was some kind of censoring or what but the seemed to be more mellow. This does not include the most recent season (which I did enjoy).
Speaking of returning voice actors I just saw that most of the English dub cast of Fruits Basket will be returning to their roles in the new anime. I didn’t see anything about the Japanese version but assume they will also try to get most of the same cast?
Ponyfan
Onto Yuugi. Yuugi actually inspired me to properly sit down and learn Japanese for the stupid reason I wanted to read the novels and it was either Japanese or German, so I might as well learn the Japanese. It's a silly reason to learn a language but it has hugely changed my life so I won't complain. I find the characters interesting but the narrative is a bit brutal at times! I think I'm mostly just character driven in the shows and stories that attract me. I don't need them to be demons or whatever, or even to be handsome. I just need them to have a great character dynamic.
Shinto shrines are awesome. :D I had to visit a bunch during my fieldwork visit because of their connections to various individuals in my research. :D
I've been watching a bunch of drama lately (we don't have a thread for that, funny enough). I'm looking forward to the furuba anime although watching it ep by ep will be annoying xD I like to watch anime series at my own pace so it might be I wait till it's done airing before I watch. In any case I agree, Ponyfan. It seems to have respected the original while promising to do the whole story this time.

Maybe it’s because I’m not very far in to the manga yet?

I remember I watched the anime ending a couple of times before I really got to grips with it. And it was an anime I watched first before I spoke Japanese, so the first couple of times I saw it in English. I can't remember now what the dub is like (its not horrendous like the one for Fushigi Yuugi xD) but I am not sure if anything is missing in translation. I rewatched the original anime not long past and I dunno if it'ds because I know the ending now or because the Japanese is more clear...yeah. Not sure but looking forward to the remake, even with a new cast, to close those gaps. I mean, there are characters that didn't even make it into the anime, and that needs resolving.
I'm also looking foward to the new Fruits Basket anime. :) Seeing the anime first and then reading the manga has been interesting as I can see where the anime follws the manga and where it doesn't. I also know why to put a seahorse rat or cat in the chatbox they're named hatori :hatori: yuki :yuki: and kyo :kyo:

I picked up Liz and the Blue Bird today and also Lu Over the Wall. :)

There seems to be a lot of hate againist filler episodes in the anime community. I don't mind them as long as they aren't recaps or flashbacks of previous episodes. Naruto has so many of those. >_<
What I don't really like is when a series I've read the manga for takes a manga arc and rewrites the ending. That I don't really like.
I'm thinking about watching Howl's Moving Castle now. Is anyone a fan of it?

I watch the dubs because reading subtitles for an extended time takes me out of being fully immersed in the movie since I don't understand Japanese. I haven't seen Spirited Away but have heard other people mention it was confusing.
Ponyfan
I don't mind filler, either - if done well it can really expand on the characters. I've noticed this particularly with magical girl series (at least older ones). Take Sailor Moon, for example (original series, not Crystal) - the manga has the team all set up after several chapters whereas the anime takes longer to introduce all the girls, thus giving you more time to get to know their personalities before moving onto the next intro. More room to breathe, you know?
Viz has just announced that Sailor Moon Stars will be released on Blu Ray/DVD in June.

yessss.
Probably part 1 though, right?
I'll be SO HAPPY when everything is released and I don't have to remember to buy them anymore.
The first ep of the new Fruits Basket anime is now up.
As expected Funimation only has it in English but fortunately CR has it in Japanese.SpoilerI was worried about the new Japanese voices but so far so good. I did worry that Yuki might be Haruka 2.0 but he isn't, and Nakamura Yuuichi does a good job as Shigure. I thought they did a nice job of it so far. Looking forward to seeing more :D
The one thing I hate about watching anime as it airs is waiting for the next episode...
Erased sounds interesting. :) Someone a couple of months ago was asking about Mirai? I noticed that it's out on DVD/Blu Ray now.
Ponyfan
I found Erased and Charlotte on Hulu and added them to my watchlist. I'm also interested in Mirai. :) I'm really excited to see the new Fruits Basket anime but I don't think it's on Hulu yet.
Ponyfan
Thanks Taffeta. :) I think Hulu might be waiting for the first few episodes of Fruits Basket to air before they add it to their anime collection.
Ponyfan
I'm hearing conflicting information on whether or not Hulu will get the streaming rights to the new Fruits Basket or not. I hope they will eventually but I think Funimation's streaming site has first rights to the episodes. I imagine that it will turn out much like Sailor Moon Crystal's series. I think Crystal had to air a full season in Japan before the English dub could be released in the US.
Ponyfan
Funimation is so going downhill now because a lot of people are leaving that community, plus they have been slapped with a lawsuit by Vic Mignogna for a serious misconduct.
I’m sticking with subs for a while till this blows over.
Attack on Titan Season Three part two here I come.
Re Furuba 2:SpoilerI thought the same about the bracelet! I was immediately like ARGH PUT THAT BACK ON NOW XD. And I also had the same wondering about whether it is needed when he is a cat or not, because I would;ve thought it was...
It's possible with the opening titles and also the ending ones, that the animators for it didn't have all the data but yeah. Yuki's bond with Tooru is not the same as Kyou's.
I also don't think Rin is in the titles though I am guessing we'll get new titles for the second half if this is "first season" and hopefully Machi will also be included then as well...and her brother, whose name I forget. Kakeru? I think Ayame is still only a silhouette in the opening titles at this point too?
In the Japanese dub, Tooru starts of with calling Yuki "Sohma-kun" as she would a generic male classmate. She begins with calling Kyou "Kyou-san" but then he gets antsy about it and tells her not to be so formal so she ends up calling him Kyou-kun". That's probably why the English is that way although it seems a bit odd to go halfway in the English and not explain it.
Has the 3rd episode of the new Fruits Basket anime been posted yet?

I'm afraid the moment that Sanada Yukimura appeared in Bakumatsu Japan though, I turned it offWas he the general type samauri dude on the horse?
QuoteI'm afraid the moment that Sanada Yukimura appeared in Bakumatsu Japan though, I turned it offWas he the general type samauri dude on the horse?
That show has such low rating on crunchyroll, but I enjoy it. It's different from other shows with the shinshingumi.
I had to teach the real bakumatsu this year, so yeah, my historical gene twitched.
Sanada's a guy in red armour, he probably had a six disc banner somewhere, but his red armour is really famous. The issue I have with it is that he died in around 1615. Which is quite a long time before the Bakumatsu.
There are things messing around with Japanese history or history in general that I find really clever or interesting or original. And then there's just taking a guy who's famous in the Sengoku era and shoving him in the Bakumatsu.
Also slightly concerned that Seimei is meant to reflect Abe no Seimei somehow. But maybe that was me overthinking.
I'm still trying to find a place to watch the new Fruits Basket anime but I noticed on Youtube that Kagura's episode on Youtube had a spoiler warning if you hadn't read the manga.SpoilerHas Kyo's true form been revealed in the new version?

PonyfanSpoilerNo, but it has been mentioned...I am trying to remember if in the other episode from the original series, that dialogue happens. I feel like it almost did but isn't given as much emphasis? The new series ep has Kagura mention it and Kyou kicks off at her and it leaves Tooru wondering about it, so it gives it some emphasis. But in my view if you're going to lay those seeds that early...maybe don't have him transform into a cat with the bead bracelet on the ground next to him? Because that is still a problem for me...
I hate waiting week on week for eps, if you get to watch them all together it might be better. I feel like the most recent episodeSpoilerdoes things in a slightly different order, but I can't remember how the manga does it.
Yuki putting that idiot in his place is still awesome though.
n another note, when I was in Japan, there was a whole museum in Higashiyama in Kyoto that used Hakuouki characters to narrate Bakumatsu history, to the point of airing the anime in the museum and having card cutouts with which you could have your picture taken. I don't know if it's still like that 2 years on, but if you're interested in a weird experience when you're there and you have an opportunity to go to Kyoto, I recommend it. It's very bizarre.
when I have zero problem with the cast of Bungo Stray Dogs all being named for historic Japanese writers and such.I like that one too. I was hoping season 3 would be dubbed quickly. The subtitles go too fast for me.
SpoilerEven having the bracelet turn in to a cat collar would have worked.
That would be cool to see if its still there, I did enjoy Hakuouki but though it was kinda...weird at times. I would love to stay in Kyoto instead of Tokyo this time around but sharehouses seem to be much easier to find in Tokyo.
Alright, I'm gonna try and watch the new version of Fruits Basket but I have tried a few times in the past to watch the old anime. Its just so boring to me. I guess it's too girly for my tastes, I like action not romance but there are some exceptions.
I started watching the new Fruits Basket! Is it a good idea to read the manga or watch the old series first?
dunno if there's any other fans here.. but Ojamajo Doremi is coming back!!

I'm so excited!! Doremi's my favourite anime (as you can probably tell from my avatar :silly:) and I never expected anything like this... it's been so long since the light novels came out that I didn't think they had any plans to revive it... plus it looks like they've managed to get at least the main girls' VAs back so that's fantastic! It's soooo good to hear them again

I would say Manga, the new series is already forging away from the reshuffling in the old anime. :) Although admittedly it's been so long since I read the manga that I can't totally remember enough to know if the new anime is being more faithful or adding any bits in...

I really wanted to watch Song of the Sea but it’s not on Netflix anymore. I guess I’ll have to wait until it airs on TV or buy the DVD.
@TaffetaSpoilerI get the impression from the manga that Shigure is trying to play both sides. Making sure he stays on Akito’s side(telling him when the others are doing things Akito will disapproves of)while secretly hoping Tohru will break the curse.
I love that the hat is being mentioned in the new anime. Have there been any flashbacks to Kyo’s guilt over Kyoko’s death?
Ponyfan
So far I have kept up with fruits basket but its still not very intersting to me.
@Taffeta I'm debating whether to get a subscription to Funimation to watch the new Fruits Basket but I'm not sure how many other series I would use it for.
I really want to see the new episodes. I did find a clip of the English dub where Tohru meets Momiji and the German words aren't translated either.
I'm interested to see how the relationships are portrayed between the characters.

I feel the same way about Pre Cure/Glitter Force. I just can't stay interested in it.

@tikibirds I hope your internet starts working again soon.
Really?
They all seem to be there, at least the ones I watch. However, I have noticed that if I am using my Amazon Kindle - I get a message saying something like "we are preparing this show for your device" for the latest episodes. Sometimes, the shows are a week behind and others - it takes a few weeks before I can watch on my kindle.
They all seem to work on my phone, but the site has somehow banned my computer. All i get is a message saying your IP address is banned. >.<
I wonder if it depends on how you watch it - tablet, phone, computer. My phones run off andriod but my kindle does not so maybe that somehow affects what you can and can not watch?
That must be really frustrating tikibirds.
New ep of Furuba.SpoilerVery well done. Blows the original version out of the water with the detail nuances.
Kyou's cat eyes as well...makes me think the you know what is coming sooner rather than later.
Tohru met Akito, and the whole thing with Yuki and the trauma was much better outlined than in the original.
And that scene with Hatsuharu and the school council president...xD.
Looks like Ayame next week...
Yay, Yona :DSpoilerI feel the original was pretty vague with Yuki's trauma and gives the wrong impression on why Yuki was so worried when he found Akito alone with Torhu.
I love that picture of Kyo's cat eyes. I see the true form hinted at in them.

I watched Made In Abyss for the first time because it finally appeared on Netflix and what should I say...? [....]
the kids, especially the girls get tortured all the time, emotionally as well as physically. The two protags, a boy and a girl, are also weirdly sexualized sometimes.

I enjoyed the story but that freaked me out to be honest... I dont like sexualisation of such young protagonist in general. I still want to see the rest of the story as it was a nice idea imo!

PonyfanSpoilerI think the true form is coming too. I absolutely see it in those eyes. It's a great expression though. Very effective. I always enjoyed the humour in the new school term in the original anime but I think this ep did all of it better. I also have to say that while I still find Hari's voice a bit disconcerting, the new Japanese voice cast in general are doing a stellar job and I don't mind any more that they've changed.
Although that guy doing Yuki's voice is in literally everything I watch at the moment, which is giving me this strange gestalt entity character in my head every time I hear his voice...Shimazaki Nobunaga I think it is?
I also wonder if it's there because he's angry at Akito or because of some greater link between the two of them cursewise. It's been a while since I read the manga so I have forgotten the details but I can't remember Kyou ever really spending a lot of time near Akito - in fact, he seems to be not invited to things like the banquet.
I agree on Yuki's trauma. It's actually quite haunting in this episode, but it makes it harder to understandSpoilerwhy Shigure has any interest in Akito, or why we're meant to accept/forgive Akito's actions given everything else...I never liked her from the start, in the original anime, especially in the manga, and I don't really like her now. Albeit I understand she's under a lot of pressure and such and it's not a nice position to be in - but that doesn't give her free reign and allow the things she does.
also re AkitoSpoilerThis episode also had Tooru (inner thoughts only) express Akito as male (kare). In Japanese you don't have to give a pronoun, he or she, so I find it interesting that she does that so clearly. A lot of people on CR were posting comments like, "till this ep I thought Akito was a girl." Well, that's gonna be a doubleshock for them later on isn't it...
Watched the first part of the Sailor Moon Sailor Stars series this weekend. Some of the names of attacks made me go "O_o What?"Spoiler"Star Gentle Uterus" (yes, Uterus) and "Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss"
The Sailor Moon attack name that always gets me is Pink Sugar Heart attack. Since we're discussing Sailor Moon I thought I'd link this song that was made by the SM Crystal Japanese voice cast of the Four Generals.

This is one of the few songs I listen to in Japanese even though I can't understand Japanese.

OOOOOOH loving the DiGiCharat loot!
Aww- I love the anime loot too!
I recently ALSO bought some anime loot- (I think a close out from an anime shop) and in it were 5 books from Cardcaptor Sakura "Clear Card" - I had no idea there was new manga for Cardcaptor Sakura!!! Sadly the translated books only go up to book 5 so I guess I have to wait until August for the final book in English.
I checked it out online- and it turns out that the episodes based on the manga are already streaming on Hulu (thanks to crunchyroll) I'm sure it will be dubbed which is a bummer as I read that the original voice actors came back for the new cartoon- (I'm kind of unclear whether the cartoon goes all the way to the end of the series or not though...?)
I loved the original Cardcaptor Sakura- (to be clear - ONLY the Japanese version- the US version was horribly dubbed and horribly censored) I'm sure this won't be quite as good but I'm looking forward to it anyway :D
Here's my loot!
Rewatching OG Friuts Basket, episode 12 Ayame appearance. I forgot how funny it was. I hope they add the sound when he’s in snake form.

The Ayame episode hasn't happened in the new series yet, has it...? I thought it aired on Friday?
Also, the new anime in general is different from the old as it's closer to the manga and the old anime inserted a bunch of things or changed the order - but the broad strokes are the same so I guess it's familiar overall..?
It's definitely not the same frame by frame :) I'd say the new version is probing deeper into some of the darker elements.
Just watched the Fruits Basket 2019 episode with Ayame in, thank god that that music that plays when he’s talking is gone now I can hear him. Was disappointed that that noise when we first meet him as a snake.
That episode next I’m going to be crying.

Ah yeah, I feel the same about the next ep, if it's what I think it is.
Also, good grief. It's so weird watching multiple series with the same voice artists in but it's even weirder when those voice artists are closely connected in these series.
Sakurai Takehiro is Ayame. Aakurai Takehiro is also Taejun in Yona which I rewatched recently, and Miyuki in DnA which I have been watching lately as well. That's a really interesting combination. Seriously.
BUT it was a good choice I think. He did it well.
...I am sure that little aside of Shigure's wasn't in the original series ("we'd already got bored with that after all...")
Do you think the next episode of the new Fruits Basket will beSpoilerWhen they visit Kyoko's grave and Momiji tells Tohru about his mother having her memories erased?
I finished Yona. It's a fantastic anime. :)
It looks like Sailor Moon Crystal 4 is finally starting production. It's been named Sailor Moon Eternal. I thought it would have a name related to the Dream arc.

So I have a question, and hoping you all can help me :)
I am not too familier with anime, but I really wanted to show my class a movie. I am a middle school teacher, and my students are 12-13 year olds. In other words, they are in the middle of being kids and teenagers and their interests are all over the place. Since this is going to be an educational movie as well I wanted to link it to environmental issues, and I came across Princess Mononoke from Studio Ghibli. I’ve never seen it myself, I actually never seen any Studio Ghibli films and the only way it seems I can get my hands on this movie is by special order *sigh*.
So, before I do that I wanted to ask if anyone has seen this movie? Would it be a good starting point to discuss environmental issues, and humans role in it all? And would you think the movie is in the age group of 12-13 year olds? And lastly, is it worth it for me to buy this movie or should I just try to find another one thouching in on the same subjects? Is it any good?
I realize that this is a movie, and not a series- so it might not be anime in the same sense you are discussing here- but I am hoping it is within the topic of this thread anyway

@karentheunicorn: I agree! I have no idea about anime series, and if I would like them or not :/ I would really like recommandations! Some series are just way too stressful for me (yes, Pokemon), but then some are beautiful ^.^

Welcome to the dark side :D
Yea, I'm just not always sure what to watch next when I'm scrolling netflix, however. There are some anime out there that kind of annoy me, like Pokemon or Dragon Ball Z stuff like that. I guess those are things that are soooo popular but trying to watch them is like burning my eyes out. Although I do find Inuyasha pretty enjoyable, although silly sometimes it seems relatively cute. I forget what episode I'm on now, can't remember if I'm through the first season of that yet or not.
Netflix has quite a few things to offer but I don't always know which are gonna be bad.
OH OH I just remembered...duh, I watched a new one that popped up on netfix called 7 seeds. I totally blew through that one over the weekend. That was pretty awesome but i got annoyed with how the last episode ended so I'm making the assumption they're gonna make more...cause I was like...NOOOOO it can't end this way (LOL)
One of my favourites is Akatsuki no Yona/Yona of the Dawn which the animation stops at vol 8 of the manga but the manga is now on vol 29 and I want to see the rest of it animated too :(
I hate Dragonball Z and always did. The thing about anime is though there are so many there's something for everyone, pretty much. And sometimes anime in genres outside my usual interest really grab me, which is fun.
There are very few 'mainstream' anime that I ever really get into. There have been one or two, but a lot of them just go right by me, they don't appeal. It makes discussing anime frustrating sometimes but eh, that's life.
I watch most anime on Crunchyroll (I have a subscription but there is a free version which has ads and a delay on new episodes coming out) these days although I've watched a few on funimation and on netflix. CR drives me mad sometimes but it does have quite a wide range. They don't have a huge number of English dubs though, I think Funimation has more of those...
Ponyfan can probably tell you where Yona is in English dub as she;'s been watching it, if you're interested xd. It's a lot of fun, although dark in places and a bit brutal. Admittedly probably the most brutal scenes are manga only (Ponyfan, you have that to look forward to >.>), but it does start with quite a lot of violence.
Snow White with Red Hair, but I think that's an anime to and then another I saw online, cause once you buy something on amazon they show you more of the same stuff, but the manga was called Takana and Hana.
There's something that's more brutal in the manga than in the anime?
I just took a look at the info about Your Name.
hum, this sounds weirdly familiar, well not exactly but the whole separated by 3 years thing. It sounds a tad like the movie The Lake House where the romantic leads are separated by a few years but they have a way of communicating with each other, etc. Mind you I've only seen the movie once and they don't switch bodies but it's got a similar fantasy vibe aspect.
And Charlotte (which is on CR and not on Netflix, I'm not sure if it has an English dub).
I wish you didn't have to pay for funimation though. I already have hulu and netflix. We got rid of cable over a year ago.

Funimation is more awkward than CR in that it takes out eps in the middle of the series so you basically have to pay for a subscription. I personally hate Funimation because it's 90% dub and some series only have dub, which I won't watch, but there are two or three series that used to be on CR but now aren't because of some kind of split between CR and Funimation and in order to watch them I have to have both.
It doesn't amuse me :/ I am considering getting rid of Funimation though because I really don't use it very much compared to CR.
However if you like dubs Funimation is generally better. Only a few series on CR have dub versions.

I have binge watched Sword Art Online, and I think I liked it. Not as well as Violet, but I liked it. I really like that Kitori is a crybaby at times- because he goes through some bad stuff. I kind of like him. And the story reminded me of back in the days when I was playing Final Fantasy 8 with my sister ^.^ For any FF 8 players out there: I got this Squall vibe from Kitori, and I adore Squall
I think my main issue with these stories is their age... I know that is sort of the whole point with YA, but I just feel that their character arcs would fit with being a little bit older. Maybe not so much in SAO (but I mean Sugu does not look like a middle school’er to me), but I definetely felt that way in Violet Evergarden. Violet says she is 14 years old, and I just don’t feel that the story works with that... So in my head I bumped them all up a few years  Is this the case with anime though? Are they often this young? I would have imagined that there is an audience for older age groups as well :P
@Taffeta: Thanks for the directions to Fruit Baskets! I’ll check it out!

Thanks Taffeta. :) I looked around on the Funimation website today and only the first episode is available to stream for non subscribers. :sad:SpoilerI feel that Kyo's guilt in the original was pretty vague but that's probably due to the fact that the manga was still being written at the time the orignal anime was made.
I really hope it comes out on DVD after all of the episodes are complete.

Eh, nothing looks too exciting for the sumer season >.<
Aw, I've been looking forward to Vinland Saga for quite some time. I love me some historical fiction!I haven't heard of that one...
I just started watching one on crunchroll called Hanasakeru Seishonen...
Like, whats with a dad who sets his 14 year old daughter up to meet guys so she'll pick one to marry and calls it a game? What kinda weird dad are you MR?
LOL! Eh, we already know you need to be with the guy you're already hanging out with (LOL).
Some of these anime romance series are silly, but I still can't stop myself from watching them.
And okay so now she thinks one of the guys is a reincarnated white panther she used to hang out with as a little girl...

People, mainstream anime series on sites like CR and stuff - recommendations?
I don't really have a preferred genre but I do care about:
Character development
Plot twists are good.
Death is fine but only if it's meaningful. I don't like stuff that has really twisted implications (like the King's Game. I am still traumatised by that - but things like Another, Erased, Charlotte are fine).
I don't really like magical girl anime. I did watch SM for a bit - I have a couple of older series on Japanese DVD - but I don't really go in for the cute magical stuff...
I also have tried One Piece and don't get on with it.
Any recommendations of stuff I might not have seen but am missing out on??
It needs to be stuff I can watch on CR or Netflix and it has to have a Japanese track because I don't like dubs.
I need something to lighten the mood between job applications and trying to write and edit academic articles with all the fiddly expectations each journal places on submissions.
I think I like Silver Spoon more than most because my dad grew up on a farm and we regularly went to my uncle's farm growing up. Now I live in the country, my neighbors keep horses and cows in their backyard, so seeing his reactions to where eggs and milk comes from just makes me laugh.
I also recommend La Corda D'oro, especially if you like music. Both seasons have excellent music in them, though the second season loses the music fairy from the first season.
I had the to heart version of these dolls. :) I really liked them.

Heart?
To Heart is a PC game from 1997. And an all ages version in 1999ish on PS1.
It also had two anime.. and a manga.
Takara released 3 girls from the series To Heart in this style of doll. It was merch for the anime series.
I love seeing your Di Gi Charat collection updates ^___^ I've never seen the show (LOVE the art/character designs though) but I'm really enjoying seeing your collection grow :)
Educating people that Japan and China do not have identical histories is tiring work
I'm waiting for someone to say Yona is like Fushigi Yuugi too, because it involves a girl and some dragons. Even though it's set in an ancient Korean context. And is nothing like Yuugi.
Thanks to the references earlier in the thread I've been rewatching Koruda (Corda D'Oro) 3.
I am fond of this anime even if I do watch it with mad seiyuu event incidents in mind...such as Miyano Mamoru accidentally collapsing his mic stand mid-drama, and the adlibs that come from getting a bunch of slightly crazy people together on the same stage.
Each time I watch it I become more fond of Hozumi and of Kyouya. I think they were always the two that stood out to me from the outset, although it keeps reminding me I never did finish playing the game. The problem with game-to-anime/manga is that often the game has stuff in that the anime doesn't reference, because there's an assumption the audience already knows it anyway.
QuoteEducating people that Japan and China do not have identical histories is tiring work
The people here HATE Japan. They would riot if they knew westerns thought that. Yet, when I went to Okinawa for the Chinese New Year, my tours had more people speaking Mandarin than Japanese. I was the only Westerner though.
When I want to piss off the locals, I tell them how much I would rather be in Japan than China. :P

Yeah, there are good reasons for that.
@Ponyfan - there's zero similarity between Yona and Yuugi except that there's a girl, and there is a blue dragon among her dragons. That's about as much as you can link them. With Haruka, especially the first one, there's also a lot of difference.
(Elaboration in spoiler tags)SpoilerIn Yuugi, the main character, Miaka, is sucked into a book on Ancient China, which is also a sacrificial spell to the God of whichever kingdom. Miaka appears in Kounan, the south Kingdom, and the deity there is Suzaku, the red bird. The story is basically about her finding the star warriors of Suzaku to prevent the death of the kingdom at the hands of the enemy in the East, Kutou, who have also 'found' their priestess (of the Blue Dragon, Seiryuu), and are building an enemy force to invade and destroy Kounan by massing the warriors of Seiryuu. And that's basically Yuugi. Aside the nauseating love story across time, space, and the Japanese National Library.
Haruka overall has six different storylines in different eras. Haruka began as a game series, so the main character in each of these is the player in the game.
The similarites between Haruka 1 (usually, sometimes it spreads to 2 as well) is mainly that the four Gods that appear in Yuugi also appear in Haruka (in a different context), and that there's a priestess at the core of both stories.
Haruka 1 also gets compared to Inuyasha because in the first series the main character is sucked down an abandoned well, like Kagome in Inuyasha.
Both the four Gods and the well story are old traditional stories so not invented by either franchise. In the case of the four Gods in Yuugi, they're used in a stellar sense and connected to constellations. Each country has seven warriors who associate to seven constellations and the creatures or ideas that those constellations put forth.
In Haruka, the four Gods are in the Yin Yang context, divided into warriors of heaven and earth, two for each deity. One of the main characters is a practitioner of YinYang and purifying demon spirits using this magic is a big part of the plot. In Japanese tradition and history, the city of Kyoto was protected by these four deities (Byakko, Suzaku, Seiryuu and Genbu) which is why they're used in the story. It's got nothing to do with Yuugi at all.
In the later Haruka stories you get real historical figures who are tied into the wider plot. The best one is 3, and the producers seem to think so as well, as they keep rereleasing versions of the game even as late as this. Haruka 1 happened in 2000, I think Haruka 3 first happened in around 2005 and the most recent release was 2017 for a game around the characters from 3? One day I will write an academic piece on how that represents history, as that's the time period I study - but that's beside the point. Because Haruka is a much bigger franchise with six games spanning what, almost 20 years now, and thus six casts, and six completely different eras...it's ridiculous to compare any of it to yuugi just because they use the same four gods and there happens to be a priestess involved.
As for Yona, she has the battle stuff, I guess, against enemy invading nations. But it's really not at all like Yuugi.
Yeah, there are good reasons for that.
Okinawa also traditionally had more Chinese links as well when it was still the Ryukyus.
I finally watched Howl's Moving Castle. It was okay but I don't think it's one I'm going to be rewatching a lot.

I found confusing info on whether the Yona sets are Blu Ray only or include DVDs also.

If it's a Blu-ray/DVD set, it should have both the Blu-ray and DVD. It looks like the Blu-ray/DVD sets come in parts 1 &2. If it is the complete set on Blu-ray, it will only have the Blu-ray discs. (Here's a link to the RightStuf page so you can see the difference.)

Me. It's the only one on Crunchyroll that has my attention this season, besides Boruto and occasionally gegege no kitaro - but that one has been around a looong time.
I think its very good but I wouldn't say it's the greatest anime ever.
Di Gi Charat ceramic tumblers with art of the kittens Sa, Shi, Su, Se, and So on them. Extremely relieved that these arrived entirely in tact with no damage at all.

Ooh you definitely should, it's so good! I watched it on their official streaming website unsubbed before. It was kinda awkward cause I had the translations written down on a page and just...read them in time with the scenes. I was a huge fan of the novel okay I wanted to watch it ASAP even if it was difficult ;u;
It's nice to not have to jump through that many hoops to watch it now >u<
Furuba is getting to a certain point in the story at last. 2 eps to go for season 1.
Yeah, the frustration I have with series in Korean or Chinese is having to find a decent sub, since I can't understand it *grr*. I have one or two Mandarin dramas and maybe one Korean drama on DVD with passable but not perfect English subs and I've watched one or two on Netflix with better but still awkward subs and I feel like maybe learning Japanese ruined me because I've become so fussy...
Does this show you are talking about have two guys in traditional chinese clothing, one in red/black and the other in blue/white? I see their images on a lot of stuff on Taobao but I have no idea who they are..other then it seems to be a BL thing according to the artwork I have seen. And google trandlate doesnt work so well for chinese, according to them - I take the LOVE BUS to work

Apparently they are quite popular...
The translations are even worse when it comes to menus. I get stuff like spoiled week old cabbage ( i think that one was for Kimchi), broken husband (no idea what that was supposed to be), fermenting milk for yogurt...

Oh! Those two are actually not WuXian and WangJi, but are in fact from another BL novel by the same author as MDZS. It's called 'Heaven Official's Blessing', or Tian Guan Ci Fu. The one in red is Hua Cheng, and the one in white is Xie Lian <3 Hua Cheng is 'demon' king and Xie Lian is a fallen god, but like...Hua Cheng is such a gentle character (at least to Xie Lian), total trope dodge for the whole demon king love interest thing. You'd be able to play Mr. Love and pick it up pretty easy. It's got the same sort of setup, just different theme and a few different features. I used to love the Nikki dress up game, but my game just disappeared one day and the cloud wouldn't restore it, etc.
I actually like Mr. Love a lot better, since it's sort of more story driven than the Nikki game, the plot of the story is cool and the voice acting is amazing. I'm curious to see how each character plays out.
One of the guy characters, Lucian (he's the dark headed guy in the group picture on the bottom right). he's a scientist and he's very nice to the main character in the story but for some reason the main character is always 'wary' of him. There is a whole background plot going on with the 'superpowers' each guy has. I'm not sure what his is yet, etc. But he comes across as really 'nice' but somehow it feels weird, almost forced/creepy.
Victor, the CEO guy (bottom left), he's a jerk so far, I mean, conversations with him piss me off so much...but he's so pretty I can't resist. He's like a awesome cat you want to pet but you know it's got a pissy attitude and you'll probably get scratched.
The two 'nice' guys are Kito or Kiro (can't remember how to spell it right now, he's the blond), he's a singer/actor. He's the first of the 4 you meet in the game and he's so sweet, like a big puppy. And then there is Gavin...he's nice and the main character apparently knew him in high school.
There seem to be some hints that she actually knew Victor and Lucian when she was a young child but I haven't yet figured out for sure if it's both or one or maybe even all of them, etc.

I think in the game the voice actors are listed online, goes to check who the voice actors are:
Lucien is English: Bill Rogers
Japanese: Daisuke Hirakawa
Gavin is English: Joe Zieja
Japanese: Yūki Ono
Victor is English: Benjamin Diskin
Japanese: Tomokazu Sugita
Kiro is English: Sean Chiplock
Japanese: Tetsuya Kakihara
Thanks. I was mixing a couple of them up with other VAs. I don’t recognize any of their names.
Also I have a research plan to write and an application to submit but you know, whatever.
I started playing the Mr. Love game.
Yeah, "My Roommate is a Cat" is very cute and funny :) The cat has attitude ;)
Yeah the talking over is a pain...is it also in the English or are you watching subbed? But it doesn't continue into later eps.
The last episode to air on Friday was THAT episode. One more ep till season 1 ends. Hope there isn't a long break. People are saying a total of 62 or 63 episodes.
Ponyfan I know I still owe you a PM...
Season 1 of Furuba remake is finished. At the very end it said that season 2 would be in 2020 sometime, so we hope for another spring release and not a later one :/
The last ep tied up a few things from the week before, it was nicely done. But dammit...SpoilerThey dropped a teaser in there, with showing BOTH Machi AND Rin and then they end the series and make us wait till next year? Grrrr...

They are the sweetest, fluffiest couple you'll ever see and I adore them so much.
AH ok. These are the two that I see everytime I am searching on Taobao for anime stuff - but I could never find out who they are or what they are from.
If you watch DnA, even if you hate it, I can hopefully have intelligent conversations about it with someone who understands it's a story and not real...
Don't ask.

I'll probably watch 1 or 2 episodes of Food Wars and see if it's right for me.
I just watched the episode of the new Fruits Basket about Hatori.
Spoiler
Wow. I think it's even more emotional than the original one and I almost cried. I haven't almost cried at anime since I watched the last 2 Yona ovas about Zeno. Akito's attacking Kana and Hatori seemed more intense in this version. It was nice seeing them being in love too.

As much as I hate (because of the emotion) of that episode of FUruba in general (it breaks my heart), I think the new one did it better.
I've started rewatching Yona of the Dawn. I'm finding little nuances that I missed the first time I watched the episodes.
I'm still watching the new Fruits Basket. Every time I think that the next episode can't top the previous one, I've been proven wrong so far.SpoilerThe one where Haru and Momiji join Kyo, Yuki, and Torhu's school was another great episode. Yuki's reaction when he sees Akito with Torhu and the fear in Yuki's eyes when Akito touches him. Also the flashback to Yuki's trauma and Kyo's true form flashing in his eyes when Akito looks up at him.

@ Taffeta, is there an anime for Haruka? Is it on Crunchyroll?

Thanks Taffeta. :D

Ponyfan
Yes, he voices a pitcher called Kawakami Norifumi (aka Nori).
He's actually the guy in episode one or two being yelled at by the very loud batter.
He is in the series more after that. You can sometimes hear Zeno in his dialogue!
We can always add that to the PM discussion with Yona and Furuba xD
As for Haruka, I do remember the US had a DVD release some time back but I think it's pretty difficult to find the DVDs now. I had half of them from the US release when it was out but I had to complete the series by buying second hand discs when I was in Japan, and ditto for the movie, so you might struggle to find it as an anime series unless something picks it up.
I finally got my copy of Sailor Stars part 2. :DThanks Taffeta. :D

I got really excited when I was watching DnA last night because I thought I heard Zeno’s va but it was Haruichi Kominato's va and not Zeno's/ Nori's.
Thanks for the info on Haruka. :D I checked and it looks like the English manga for Haruka is out of print also.

PonyfanSpoilerI think they are actually male when they are not transformed. If you watch the transformation sequence closely (I paused it and watched it frame by frame by pushing the pause button over and over again while it was paused-it works on my blu-ray player, I don't know if it works on all dvd/blu-ray players) the outlines are far more masculine at first and they change to more feminine outlines including hips and breasts by the time the transformation is done.
Re: Starlights -SpoilerIf I remember correctly, the anime does indeed have them physically change gender.
In the manga, they're female crossdressers instead (i.e. physically female, dressing/presenting as male). I like the manga version better :p

Question for anime fans who know a bit about Japanese:
I'm writing a fanfic where a Japanese character (Miko from Transformers Prime) needs to use an alias, and she seems the type to just rip a name from her favorite anime. ;)
I've got a couple questions!
1. In Japanese, do people introduce themself with surname first (like I think they do in Mandarin(?)) or is it first-name first like in English? Wondering this because I've been looking up the Japanese names of anime characters and I'm like . . . "Which of these is the surname, tho?".
2. I looked up Spike from Cowboy Bebop and his Japanese name is apparently Supaiku Supīgeru. Supaiku sounds like a "Spike" so I'm thinking that is his first name? Y/N?
3. Would Supaiku be a gender neutral name or is it specifically a guy's name? And if it's a guy's name, would there be a way to make it gendered as female instead?

I actually went to see that film on the same day you posted that question but I didn't spot them. However I have heard this too. I guess they're in the background and it's so long since I saw Kimi no Na Wa I didn't recognise them. I've heard that it was confirmed they were in it but not together - but yeah, I didn't dig into it too much.
I didn't know I was going to see it until I randomly found out the London cinema near where I was staying last week was airing it in Japanese and not just in dub, at which point I figured I might as well, so I wasn't really looking out for them :/
I need some recommendations. Something that has action or supernatural elements.
You could always watch Assassination Classroom.
Ah yeah, I remember those scenes but it has been so long since I last watched Kimi no Na Wa that I didn't make the connections.
Erm, yeah, I did enjoy it. I like Kimi no Na Wa better, and frankly I'm not sure how this world interconnects with theirs because of how Tenki no Ko/Weathering with you ends, but I did like it. And I did feel like I recognised Tokyo in the detail, the art as ever is very pretty.
I do feel like there's a couple of big questions unanswered. For example...SpoilerI don't really know why Hodaka leaves his family, because it's not explained, and he's determined not to go back so it implies something bad happened, and yet at the end he is back there and so it seems a little more like he just ran away for more superficial reasons.
But it is cute. And the whole of watching it Suga's voice was bothering me like, "I know that voice, dammit"...and the credits rolled and it was Oguri Shun (who I've seen in a whole bunch of Japanese dramas).
I didn't expect to see it, it isn't airing at all I don't think round where I am currently living but it was just that I was there in London and by coincidence found it was airing and in Japanese that I thought I should go see it while I had the chance. The artwork works well on the big screen.
QuoteYou could always watch Assassination Classroom.
I will give this one a try.
Any other suggestions? I got A LOT of free time on my hands since my city is under a quarantine. They don't really want anybody to go outside and I think roads out of the city are closed.

I started watching Wolf's Rain. So far, I like it. I wasn't sure if I would but I like the characters and the story well enough.
I’ve seen a short clip of Demon Slayer but I’m not sure it’s something that I would enjoy even though I’m a big fan of Zenitsu’s Japanese voice artist (I hold Taffeta responsible for that. :P).

My friend ordered hers online and she got it. So I think it's just that stores that used to carry it aren't for some reason. It's highly annoying because I don't have a lot of shopping options where I live so I'm going to end up ordering it online and it will be more expensive than if Walmart would just put it in their store.

Yeah, I was wondering if both parts had the same number or something else to make stores think "oh it's the same, no need to order more". If it was just the US I'd figure it was one of those things, but UK stores not carrying it either makes me wonder.

haha, we're all learning about our body.
Comeon white blood cells kick corona's butt!!
What's funny to think about is this is happening inside our bodies all the time; although our white blood cells and immune cells actually EAT the invaders instead of killing them but it's funny to see white blood cell go crazy killing a germ and then switch back to being mild and soft spoken.
Plus I like how it gives information on each cell, it's almost like I'm watching a documentary (hehe).

Japan is in a state of emergency but not a full scale lockdown (according to friends over there), but everyone who can work from home is working from home and they absolutely should. Anime will be there when we get things back sorted out. In the meantime, wishing everyone involved in the industry to stay safe.
We have plenty of existing and older anime series to get us through lockdown, and nothing is more important than people's lives.

I wonder sometimes if the animes change hair/eye colors for characters because the animators think it works better even if it goes against the original character designs. In Yona, Jaeha's eyes are purple but they are green in the manga. I think Suwon's eyes were changed too but I don't remember what color they are in the manga.
Ponyfan
I remember Ukitake's eyes were brown in the anime, but in at least one artwork by the author/artist, they were green.
I think Furuya's eyes are meant to be brown as well, but in the anime they are grey/silverish, which actually suits him better imo.
...The biggest appearance change for me that I can think of right now is Chichiri from Fushigi Yuugi, though. The animation shows him with pale blue hair, but in all the artwork he's more strawberry blond...
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
I can see why they changed it, because Tasuki has the flame hair thing going on, but it's still kind of odd. (And Miaka and Tamahome both have black hair in official art but brown/dark teal respectively in the animation).
TBH it makes more sense for Jaeha to have green eyes. xD.

I was starting to wonder if something was wrong with my Internet. It happened again yesterday when I was almost at the end of the episode and it suddenly went back to the first scene after the opening titles.
I'm sorry it's happening to you too.
I've found myself humming Hashire! Mirai the last couple of days. :)

My Crunchyroll will forget that I watched an episode too sometimes and then when I come back and try to start the next episode I start thinking "Didn't I just watch this one?"
I finished rewatching Sailor Moon and am still watching Diamond no Ace Season 2. I want to rewatch Yona also.
Has anyone seen A Whisker Away? The preview looks interesting.

I watched a whisker away a day or two ago, I liked it and it was cute and sweet and a couple times hit me right in the feels so I say watch it.
I also just watched 2 episodes of Food Wars (I think that's what it was called), I did like it and will probably watch the whole series but I didn't expect the partial nudity and weird food/sexualized scenes when I started. That was unexpected. (haha)
Im not sure how many play the Mr Love Queen’s Choice game but the anime based on the game will be released on July 15th. It looks really good. :)

I have been...
Shall we say persuaded...?
To watch the first two eps of the EVOLXLOVE anime (Mr Love...whatever).
It's early to say if it's gonna be a good series or not, but it seems ok so far. The subs with the English names drive me mad though because I can hear the names they actually say and it's so disjointing having them say one thing and the subs writing a completely different name. I get that's the name for the game in English but I wished they left the English name for the dub and kept the subs to the Japanese.
Otherwise, so far the MC seems like a genuine idiot. But I've played my fair share of otome games/watched otome anime and that's pretty part for the course xD
I do wish they'd given her a name though. They've just called her 'Watashi' (I).
@Ponyfan, I can't believe I've managed to corrupt you to both Daiya and Yona. (Fushigi Yuugi next? XDD)
The Daiya subs have problems sometimes. There's at least one line in the last ep of season 1 where it's subbed as something like 'what did he say'? and that's clearly a translator note which didn't get fixed because what's actually said is something different. I can hear it so I don't know why they can't :/ It's Kanemaru and it's something about Eijun getting by without conceding a point.
And in Season 3 there's a lovely moment where the subs call Kaneda a catcher even though it says Pitcher on screen and one where they switch Yui and Masashi's names. Sigh. I could write a long rant about Daiya subs.
...Yeah, the MC from EvolxLove seems a bit like that. Like, "this is dangerous! But I need to do it!"
Yuugi is great, if a bit old now - but at times, a bit emotionally brutal. But given that you've survived Yona, it's probably fine ;)
I watched the first season of "The Rising of the Shield Hero" this weekend. I liked it.
I wanted to watch part 2 of season 1 of Furuba BUT the copy that I got from Amazon is region 2, even though there was nothing on the listing that said that it wasn't region 1. The listing said it was NTSC but there was no region listed. And the seller was most unhelpful about fixing it so I just won't buy from them anymore. Now I can't watch it unless I change the region on my PC, which apparently you can only do 4 or 5 times so...Yeah. Not sure I want to do that. So for now, I will just find something else to watch until I get a replacement copy.

I watched the first 2 episodes of EvolxLove. The names being different in the dialogue than in the subs and on the screen really bothers me. At one point MC shows a text on her phone from “Lucien” but in the dialogue I think she says his name is Simon.
I can’t quite describe it, but something feels off with the anime besides the names issue. Maybe it’s the pacing of the plot? I will probably watch a few more episodes though.
Ponyfan
I need to watch the next eps to really comment beyond what I saw already.
The name thing really bothers me though. I prefer to watch on my TV but I have no way of turning off subs on the app...
But their names I think are Zen, Shimon, Haku and...I forget the other one. Oh yeah. Kira.
I got curious and looked up what means kira in Japanese. That is a good match for Kira's character.
I've gotten used to watching subbed anime in Japanese.
Ponyfan
I think for me the potato chip princess thing, the english version where the MC first get's a phone call from Kiro and he says, Found you Miss Chips; and every time after that just the way the english guy says it feels very endearing. Potato Chip Princess just feels to long for a nickname/endearment for me. I think it's also just how cheerful the english voice for Kiro is, that makes me like the character even more.
It's sorta like Victor's dummy, although at first Victor calling her idiot/dummy doesn't feel like an endearment, it's only later in game it feels that way. Which I've found the intereactions between Victor and MC in the anime cute and even funny. Whereas in game there were a couple times I was so frustrated with Victor I wanted to kick him. It's also if possible make me like Victor a little better as there are a couple of scenes we don't get in game (like when MC goes to the restaurant), you get to see a bit more that you were not aware of in game.
I also feel like with the anime they're streamlining the story better, so I'm hoping that continues so it makes the story better but also clears up stuff that the game doesn't really resolve or is confusing in game.
I have broken you with Daiya, haven't I >.>
Sorry about that XD.
Useful anime vocabulary - "baka" xD.
On another note while I think about it - if you're cool with Japanese dubs a bit more now, if you did decide to watch Fushigi Yuugi, rather than read it, the English dub is notoriously bad and known for being awful. It's the main reason I stopped ever watching dubs. The Japanese dub is awesome though. It's the thing that made me want to learn Japanese. So just for the record.
You might be better at tolerating completely wooden acting than me. But if not...just a heads up ;) It's bad -.-.
Oh, I also started watching something called Toradora on netfix. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like it; the girl character just made me annoyed with how she treats main guy in the story. But I've continued to watch and like it now.

Which reminds me, I finally found the last opening theme (second half of season 3) on Itunes (Ryuusei no HOWL). It's taken long enough ><
There is at least one ep in Season 3 of Daiya where they play one of the earlier ending themes IN THE MIDDLE of the ep and then the current opening and ending in their normal places as well...
(If you didn't see it yet, the ep is also titled the same as the ending song. There is a reason, but still, it's...weird...)
One listen to Ryuusei no HOWL and it became an instant favorite. :)
I was watching Diamond no Ace today and in the first episode I watched, the opening scene was so funny that I was laughing out loud. I needed something to smile about today so it was great timing.

@SpacePinto - I do that too. I actually have a bunch of CDs with music from series I've never watched, but really like the music from.
So this past week I rewatched Hakata Tonkatsu Ramens and thanks to Daiya I now understand all the baseball references running through it. I still really like that show even though it's entirely off the wall and quite violent really...
I realised the next ep of Furuba for me to watch is their trip to Kyoto. I just know it's gonna make me wish I was back there ...

I’m still undecided if I’m going to try to continue watching Evol x Love.
I want to download the opening theme from Evol x Love. Online I see the artist listed as Yutaro Miura but on iTunes the artist is listed as NordeX. I tried listening to both versions and they are similar enough that I can’t hear any obvious differences.
Has anyone watched Children of the Sea? I saw a trailer and it looked really interesting but then I saw a review that mentioned major problems with the plot. That was enough to make me hesitate on buying it. I try not to be influenced by reviews but I have been disappointed by movies in the past that had great reviews but when I watched them I didn’t care for them.
Ponyfan
@Uni -Eraser or Erased? (If the latter I know it well, if the former, do tell what it is about!)
I haven't gone back to EvolxLove since ep 7, I don't know what to make of it overall. On the TV I discovered I can mostly ignore the subs except when they superimpose names in awkward places, so it's not too bad. But I haven't been watching a lot of anime lately.
I have in my mind to rewatch a bunch of series but haven't got around to them yet. Just haven't had time since I now gave myself some extra homework to do, sigh...
I’m hearing a lot of things about the ending of EvolxLove and that it leaves the ending open for a possible 2nd season. From the episodes I’ve seen I think the anime was trying to condense the story to make it easier to follow for those that don’t play the game but in exchange the anime lost a lot of the bonding moments between MC and the guys that occur in the game.
I’m getting close to the end of season 3 of Diamond no Ace. In a way I don’t want to reach the end and not have more episodes to watch; yet I’m very intrigued by current events and want to see how they turn out.
I’m not sure how many like Demon Slayer, but i saw that it’s out on Blu Ray/DVD.

It's unfortunately so normalised in anime >< and possibly in areas of Japanese culture, but that's another subject for another thread probably not here.
I've seen the original Soul Eater, I know it deviates a lot from the manga but I looked up the manga and decided I liked the animation better. I'm only really in it for Franken Stein though...it's been a while but he was always the best character IMO. (Maka and Soul are fine and so are their crew but you know).
I've been rewatching Area no Kishi. It still has a mad premise and I still enjoy it. But its intro episodes do make Daiya look like a teddy bear's picnic in terms of trauma.
It's always sad when a series descends into those areas to get people interested.
This is fortunately the anime thread so you don't have to hear my long rant about the lack of plot and increase in offensive fanservice scenes in the last arc of Bleach.
It's also sad when an otherwise perfectly good anime shows things like peeking on the girls as a rite of passage for young guys, or the idea that they can jump on a girl/coincidentally make contact with parts of her anatomy for 'humour'...
Not to mention the number of very unrealistic conversations about chest size that female anime characters seem to only have in series written by men...;)
...So yeah. It's definitely a problem.
And unfortunately a lot of real life high school girls in Japan experience negative behaviour, perhaps because it's so normalised in these kinds of tropes.
I think there is also another scene in FireworksSpoilerWhere the same group of boys are taking bets and the winner gets to keep a picture one of the boys took of their female teacher with her underwear exposed.
@Taffeta
You've fully corrupted me to subbed anime. :D I started to watch Free on Crunchyroll and it pulled up the dubbed version automatically. When they started speaking in English I realized that was not the Japanese version I was wanting.
Ponyfan
It may be because they are having to match the mouth movements of the characters, who are not animated in that language. But I don't know if that also is a problem for English language materials translated into other tongues - Zapper, you will know that better than me.
:D
Another one bites the dust...
(But if you want to compare Haru to Furuya you kind of have to...xD)
But I think it matters for me that most dubs in English are American. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's just not my native English in accent or vocabulary, so I tend to notice more, especially with certain words that are pronounced differently (like lever) or where vocab is different (like sidewalk, etc).
Does Viz actually call SM Usagi? If so that's a huge step up.

I actually love how in the German dub from the 90s Usagi was renamed to Bunny. Kids know what a bunny is even though it's English. But it works as a name and that's how us kids could make the connection between her bunny items and the moon rabbit story. It's a good example for why sometimes dubs need to change names to make concepts work for children who can't be expected to know all about foreign cultures.
Another example would be the creature Falcor from The Neverending Story. His original name is Fuchur but English speakers, especially kids, would pronounce that falsely to make it sound like a dirty word. Hence the name change.
I believe Viz used the original names for everyone in Sailor Moon (have they got up to Stars? I'd be interested to see what they did for Tin Nyanko's name, if they'd keep that as-is or translated it to Tin Kitty or something).
"Why do they always set it in Japan? Wouldn't it be more awesome set in the States?"
I would like to say that I was not accusing you of being rude. It's just the phrase you used "I am going to rip holes in people for not trying to pronounce the Japanese names correctly." sounds aggressive.
Kawaii is cute things, right? Is it pronounced like Hawaii with a K? (ka-why-ee?)
What's kowai? I don't think I've heard that one and I'd like to not inadvertently offend people...
You can't always get every name right, but people appreciate the effort. I think that's what you're talking about too, you just misunderstood what I meant and who I meant it towards.
How I would pronounce Hawaii sounds closer to kowai than kawaii to me, but I am British so I don't know for sure the comparison.

Soooo much of the screen time is dedicated to the scenes of ice skating, it's understandable that folks not into ice skating wouldn't get too excited about it.

The irony of that comment is that I have done more ice skating than I have ever engaged with baseball, yet I've watched all of Daiya and read the manga. I still don't care about baseball at all in real life, and it's not even really a thing in the UK.
It's not about the setting or the technical detail, I can manage that. I've watched a lot of series in which I don't have experience of what's happening in the story. But if I don't like the characters and the plot doesn't grab me then that's just how it is. I wouldn't have watched Daiya if the characters hadn't been engaging from the start. I'm quite ruthless with sports series and it either works or it doesn't.
I'm not saying the series is bad, or anything. I know it's popular. Just for me personally it didn't click. I don't like either of the main characters, so that made it difficult to care about them (although I really really tried).
Enjoying a series about something you don't know much about is normal. I know a lot of people who enjoyed Yuri who have done less skating than I have. I'm just not one of them. I really wanted to like it. I just didn't. *Shrug* c'est la vie.
I don't think so. I think I understood it exactly as it was meant.
It seems that you have misunderstood my comment. But that's okay, it doesn't really matter.

I really think a good series is a good series irrespective of the subject it's based around.
I was hoping to find Season 2 of Fruits Basket today in store but I didn’t even see a spot on the shelf or a shelf tag. I looked online and it looks like Walmart is not carrying it in their stores.

My Walmart never had part 2 of season 1, so I'm not surprised. What bothers me is that I've been told by store employees that they don't carry it in store because it doesn't sell. Yet they still have several copies of One Punch Man season 1 that are shelf warming (and have been there since it was released) and they've now got season 2 (which just came out) on the shelves. They also still have Inuyasha, Boruto, and several others that have been there and I'm pretty positive are not restocks since the number on the shelf never changes. I feel like Fruits Basket would sell if it was available.
If so, I hope the dialogue was less of a cringe.

All of the Walmart stores in my area are the same. :( I know everyone likes different series but it’s a little annoying to see many animes that I’m not interested in shelf warming and having to always hunt for the ones I do want to watch. I think the last anime I got in store was Weathering With You.
I think Fruits Basket would sell too. The manga seems to be selling well due to the new series.

I enjoyed it. It's a bit hardcore and twisty if you like stuff like that, but pretty nicely put together. I think there's supposed to be a second season at some point - there's certainly manga although I haven't read it...I've only heard a few spoilers.
I've never done that, although I'm still kicking myself that I didn't get to attend an event when I was in Japan...I remember looking at tickets and stuff was complicated even with the language, but I don't know the site in question.
This may be an unhelpful post but do you know whether there will be a DVD release of the event after the fact? It's not uncommon in Japan to do this with big events. I have a lot of event DVDs from various things/series although some are more difficult to track down than others. If you can't find ticketing for the streaming then maybe that's something to look into? If there's a website for the event that information may be on it...
The thing with Japanese sites/etc is that they often want you to have a Japanese bank account or card to pay for the access. Even when I was in Japan, there were still things not accessible to me because of that.
We do have a couple of members actually in Japan though - Thimble is one, can't remember the other right now. Maybe they would be able to help you figure it out if you asked them directly??
We had a Valentine game at work today and one of the questions was "In Japan what do girls often give guys on Valentine's Day?" I knew the answer was chocolates. It made me smile that something I learned from anime was useful in real life. :D

I like having DVDs with only the Japanese for when I'm on the treadmill but sometimes I want to watch those titles again and don't have time to read them when I'm not on the treadmill so it's a little frustrating. Seconding the wish for Daiya on DVD in some western format. I don't care too much if it has subs, since the subs on CR for Daiya annoy the heck out of me with the free and loose way they mess with the dialogue at times...(all the times it says someone 'hates' something, for example, when the characters generally use the word for 'annoying' instead. And the unforgivable moments where they get names/score counts/position/whatever wrong...yeah).
But the Japanese DVDs are so expensive. It's like $20 for 3 episodes or something ridiculous. Daiya has over 200 episodes. Nope. Not happening. Hoping CR don't remove it for a long time, because that's going to hurt. I will have to step up buying the manga from Act I if that happens >< I'm still missing a lot of that.
It's also so annoying that Daiya manga Act II is on a break this week after the cliffhanger last week, gah.
OK, Daiya rants out the way (that is what I'm rewatching atm, although I'm also rewatching Alderamin on the Sky, which if I wasn't lazy I could go and read the novels for but I am lazy so I'm stuck with 12 episodes that I enjoy but which don't quite finish anything up).Yet another voice of the many voiced Okamoto Nobuhiko...
On the subject of learning Japanese...I started doing that in 2007 after watching Fushigi Yuugi and being fascinated by Tasuki's accent. I learned later that his voice artist, who I greatly respect, had to be coached to do it by the author, who comes from the Kansai, but at the time it just grabbed me. Kansaiben and Kyotoben dialects still sound really interesting to my ears :D. But I remember that I picked up odd words to begin with, like shashin for photograph, because of one scene where Miaka is trying to explain what a camera is and what it does to her companions.
There are pros and cons from listening to Japanese in anime. The pros are that you get to hear actual Japanese during something you enjoy, so it's more likely to make an impression, and that really helps get your ear in. The cons are that the language used in anime is often very colloquial or full of odd vocabulary you'll never ever use in real life. Even now I have a better vocabulary for all kinds of mystical and mythical things than I do food...
I've been watching Free!. I don't have Season 3 yet, but I bought High Speed and Take Your Marks during the Holiday sales and I'm loving that the characters from High Speed that weren't in the first 2 seasons are showing up in Take Your Marks. I'm going to have to put Season 3 on my purchase list for this year.
I feel like it's almost necessary to watch those before season 3. Otherwise it kind of comes at you with all these new people. Especially Ikuya :/
I was glad Rin still got to be in season 3.
RightStuf has Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics Season 1 on Blu-ray up for pre-order. :) It's being released in May and is supposed to have 2 episodes that were never aired in the US.

Did Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics air on Nickelodeon in the late 80's/early 90's? I have a very vague memory of watching some of them. I remember a cartoon about Snow where the dwarfs were named after the days of the week and it showed the evil queen lacing Snow White's bodice so tightly that Snow White fainted.
Ponyfan
Is anyone watching Backflip (Bakuten) ? I saw a short clip and it looked interesting. I looked up the vas and the only one I could recognize is Shimono Hiro but when I started looking at the other artists and their characters I noticed that Miyuki and Sanada's vas are there also.
Ponyfan
Yes, I'm pretty positive that's the same show. According to RightStuf it was made in 1987.
I have so broken you. I'm so proud :D
I don't know this anime though. I'll have to look it up.
I have a lot of stuff I want to rewatch and yet I am still rewatching Daiya, because it has eaten my brain. Although comparing these games to what's going on in the manga and especially seeing how certain characters have evolved through Act II is quite heartwarming.
Special shout out for Shirasu here.
I want to rewatch Yona but I'm gearing up to do that and then maybe reread the manga since I have so many volumes as yet unread and it makes sense to go back to the start and enjoy all the Taejun awesomes.
I really really hope they animate at the very least the next volumes sometime, because everyone who hasn't read the manga will never understand how epic Taejun is (or how epic Zeno is!) without it.
Any Madoka Magica fans on here? :) They're finally making a sequel to "Rebellion"!!! (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2021-04-25/madoka-magica-gets-new-anime-film-as-sequel-to-2013-rebellion-film/.172103) I'm so excited! I didn't think they'd ever make another film, it's been so long since the last one. I hope it's good.

Yes, I'm very excited about it! Especially since I'm sure this'll mean a lot more new Madoka merchandise releasing, like figures...
I've seen Hana Yori Dango - the original Japanese drama. I feel like there's so much unhealthy going on in it and somehow it just works because well, it's all really shoujo. I've never seen the anime.
...Ouran Host Club is better as an anime though. And frankly, I wish it didn't have so many volumes because I would've read it but that's too many books to buy from Japan ><. I'm interested in a bit part character who I'd like to read more about but he's not really in the series much.
Assassination Classroom is mad. It's so much fun but so mad. Except I admit I don't like the ending.
Today is Mochi's birthday and the 15th was Eijun's. :D I took a screenshot of the the calendar page with their birthdays a few days ago.

I was going to suggest you get the Rising movie from RightStuf but I don't know if they have any that are region free. The Blu-Ray/DVD they have is Region A and the DVD is Region 1. Not sure which region(s) you can use.
The most ridiculous episodes are when you have basically a whole episode for one at-bat. Especially towards the end of season 2, in that Yakushi game finale. I think it crosses three episodes for that inning??

I agree.
There's one an episode where someone comes up to bat, there's a long flashback that takes up the rest of the episode and right before the credits the same batter is still standing at the plate.
Ponyfan
Mind you...in the manga there's one at bat that took 4 weeks to complete. Because of a 2 week hiatus in the middle, true, but seriously.
@Ponyfan, re FreeSpoilerHaru says something along the lines ofSpoiler"My dream, everyone's dream. The view nobody has seen yet begins from this point." (Ore no yume, minna no yume. Mada mita koto no nai keshiki ga koko kara hajimaru).
The text banners on screen through the trailer say "Yume no butai (The stage of dreams)", "Sekai Taikai (World competition)" "Chousen" (Challenge)". "Shiren (trial/ordeal)" "Shouri e no saigo no tatakai (the final battle to victory).
Seems a bit dark and angsty. Definitely saw Albert, also Makoto, Rin, Sousuke and I am also pretty sure about Ikuya? As well as Haru
Interesting that there's two parts to this release, one on 17th Sept and one in April next year. It was originally intended to coincide with the olympics...in a way that makes me kind of sad given the behind-closed-doors nature of the Olympics right now
Is the rhythm gymnastics anime Backflip/Bakuten? I know that one has a few Daiya vas in it including Shimono Hiro, and Miyuki's va. It's on my watchlist but I haven't started it yet.
Ponyfan
Crunchyroll has been purchased by the same company that owns Funimation. (Sony?)
I'm getting closer to the end of Daiya season 1.
Ponyfan
I'm not sure if the Free trailer contains spoilers, but maybe hints...SpoilerI don't think there's anything in it that is a real shock though. Haru looking forward, Rin referencing his Dad, Ikuya saying he won't get lost any more...that he'll swim his own way..etc. The English is Albert, sounding impossibly American despite not being American, which always amuses me. That and the unnatural enunciation of all the English dialogue in this show...except probably Rin's.
I still sense some angst going on here though.
Yeah, that image is...O.o.
The Mashiro no Oto anime ends in an odd and rather unsatisfactory place tbh.
It's apparently a long manga, like Yona, but I don't know if I am going to go after it yet. But the music is lovely :D And I do love that opening theme. It reminds me in places of some of the Haruka music, with the Japanese instrumental sections. May have to dig out my Haruka playlist (although they tend to use shakuhachi more than shamisen, it's still got that vibe).
Been randomly clicking on anime this week, in between other things :)
Daiya:SpoilerIf not for that yips arc I don't think I'd ever have got to like Eijun, so even though its angsty, I quite like it. In the current manga I'm still a bit annoyed at him.
Been rewatching the new Furuba. I never did get to the end of it yet, so I need to do that.
Last night I watched the ep in Kyoto and Nara. It's so detailed I'm actually sitting there watching it going, I know where that is...I remember that place...even to the point of the store Yuki is trying to buy snacks from. O.O. It made me miss Kyoto though :/ I've never seen it with the autumn leaves, only the cherry blossom, so now I want to do that. Sigh.
Daiya:SpoilerI'm hoping Eijun's got his head straight a bit in the last chapter thanks to Nori being awesome and showing him how an ace should actually behave. I mean seriously, that kid.
Ochiai - I don't love him, but I warmed to him a bit after seeing his wife and daughter. It isn't in the anime though I don't think, only in the manga. They're at the training ground and for some reason the little girl is hunting ants.
I dunno though. He's really really annoying in the second season, and the things he says...yeah. I haven't forgiven him for telling Miyuki he's not fit to be Captain right when Miyuki is struggling with it himself. And trying to teach Eijun a useless pitch because he thinks Eijun is useless...telling Haruichi to use a metal bat...telling Furuya he can be the best in the world...all bad choices. But there's a moment where he says that he intended to sacrifice the autumn tournament for Furuya's development, right? Except the word he uses is more emphatic than sacrifice...
I'm in a bit of an anime slump if anyone wants to shoot some suggestions my way. Preferably if it's on netflix or crunchyroll or heck free to watch with prime.
I'm not big on mech animes, my tastes run the gamut though with just about anything else. My sister and I talked about rewatching the October anime (Slayers, Slayers Next, Slayers Try, Slayers Premium, Slayers Revolution, Slayers Evolution - R, and Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door) but we never got around to any of them. My health has put a damper on a lot of plans, I blink and I'm dozing off. :p
Anyway I'm craving something somewhere between the original Fruits Basket and Death Note. Like I said my tastes run the gamut and I'm in a slump so throw stuff at me and we'll see what sticks?
@TwistedRiver - I'd recommend Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn) except for the annoying fact that only the first eight or so manga volumes are animated...of 36 so far.
@Ponyfan, if and when you ever watch Neoange, I will love to hear your views on it. I am fond of it but seriously, there are so many things that I still find funny.
Rewatched Yona a couple of times ;)SpoilerKija running through Awa with Jaeha in the jar is always one of my favourite dragon moments. I've worked out that everything in Yona is better when there are dragons.
I am not sure if it's a mistake or not.Not sure. I don't have that manga volume, so can't check what it says ;)SpoilerThe Japanese name Tesshin is written with the characters 'Tetsu' and 'Shin', which kind of squash together in the middle. So he might well have called him Tetsu based on that. However it would be a bit confusing given Yuuki Tetsuya is also a character...
I like the Granrodeo opening for Zeroin (Kami mo hotoke mo) but I may like the closing theme song Ruten better. I haven't found either on itunes yet though :( Granrodeo has special nostalgia for me as they were a group brought together from the neoroma live events. The singer, Taniyama Kishou, is also a voice artist and was voicing Tsukishima Ren from Corda D'Oro at live events and the guitarist, Iizuka Masaaki, who was part of the stage band, and the rest is kind of history. I don't know if Taniyama still does voice roles, but being a singer was his dream.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMceoRhTekg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMceoRhTekg)
I found this clip of him singing one of Tsukishima's songs at a Neoroma event from back then XD.
Saiyuuki has a history of solid theme songs. A couple I like are Late Show from Burial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz9ZeqqJBCc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz9ZeqqJBCc)
and Sakura no Ki no Shita De from the Gaiden

They're pretty different, the second is very haunting and beautiful.
...
Yeah, Funimation announced that they are merging with Crunchyroll so soon their new releases will only be on Crunchyroll.
I wonder if they'll finish releasing the Crystal Sailor Moon with these blu-ray releases. It seemed like they tried to release them with the 90s DVD sets before.
I started re-watching Nadesico! It's one of the only anime where I will watch the dub... I'm not what it is about this series that I like so much, there are even aspects I don't like, but I watch it every few years for the past 20 years. I think I like the mix of comedy and serious topics, and the large cast. Has anyone seen it? Ha, I might have made a post just like this last time I watched it...
Also keep checking Itunes for the Granrodeo opening theme and the ending one. No dice yet...
Also been rewatching Assassination Classroom (ack, the ep in Kyoto has scenes that are so much more familiar to me now!). I want to watch Daiya but....well...I'm watching the manga a bit as well ;) I have some theories but I can't help being a biiit worried anyway, bearing in mind the last time Seidou played Inajitsu.
I've started watching Super Cub, it's really nice so far :) pretty wholesome
Also, the second season of Tiger & Bunny exists! I did watch the first ep though I need to go back and watch the movie before I continue, since I didn't finish watching that yet.
It's a bit weird hearing one of the new characters speaking with Furuya's voice. I mean, it's not like Shimozaki Nobunaga is a rarely heard voice artist but this is SO like Furuya, it's really weird.
Leaving a brief taster here of Horimiya...Spoilerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PlhweMsKqg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PlhweMsKqg)
(He doesn't actually say 'it's egg time', but anyway, it's still cute)
I haven't seen either the Granrodeo or the other song on itunes yet although Amazon has them both. Even Amazon in the Uk but only on their streaming service, which I don't use. Sigh.
I don't really want to buy the whole album from Japan atm, as Japanese CDs are expensive. I'll just have to wait a bit longer and see if it eventually appears.
Saiyuuki does have some epic theme songs. I've said it before but it really does.

Also, Barnaby is still such a kid xD. It was funny how even though Kotetsu was late and they didn't manage to participate in the opening action of the episode, Barnaby was more cross about Kotetsu drinking his drink...
And him happily feeding his plants who are now all over his formerly empty apartment...is so cute. I mean, he is a messed up kid, and Kotetsu is like partner-dad all in one, but now he has a leafy family to keep him company too :D

ALSO someone put this on YT and so I'm sharing it. This is an omake (URA-SAI) scene from Saiyuuki Zeroin. I think kinda looking something fresh... any suggestions?
Any good laugh anime anyone would suggest check out?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Haikyuu has a horrible first episode :) But it does get better. Though I still think Daiya is better, Haikyuu is somehow gentler.
I actually don't think I've watched ep 1 all the way through. I tried and failed a few times so ended up skipping to episode 2 and that worked better.
I finished Daiya and started watching Haikyuu. I wasn't impressed with the first episode. It seemed really boring to me and if I didn't know that the 2nd episode is more engaging than the 1st one, I might not have been motivated enough to keep watching. I think I will enjoy the series though.
Whenever I recommend Haikyuu, I try to point out that the first episode isn't good and to give it until after the second episode to judge it.
Daiya no Ace is still my top sports manga/anime. Although it is occasionally soul destroying. Unlike Haikyuu.
SpyxFamily is the gift that keeps on giving. Seriously. I have so many hopes for Tasogare, Yor and Anya as they navigate being a family while trying to save the world.
Anya is so cute. Clip link in spoiler tag.Spoilerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nHpuMNA6kY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nHpuMNA6kY)
Note: Relevant stuff ends at 1.10, after that is random nonrelated.
Also, on an unrelated note, this theme song is still eating my brain horribly:

(Warning for scenes of fighting etc).
I actually went back to watch Kuroko no Basuke this week as well. I watched the first eps ages ago but just decided to watch it again. I still feel like the kiseki no sedai idea is pretty ridiculous...I mean Daiya has the Inajitsu team and they're pretty high rated but not unrealistically so, IMO...) but I do kind of like the idea of a main character like Kuroko.
Me watching sports anime when I don't care at all about the sport being played xD.
I watched Belle/Ryu to Sobakasu no Hime. Some of it was good but the ending wasn't satisfying to me and left me wanting more. I didn't feel like the conflict was completely resolved.SpoilerThere's a huge online world called U. When a person downloads U, the U device scans their biometric information and creates an avatar. The U device also merges the avatar somewhat with the user's physical body. If the person using U is hurt their avatar reflects that. At one point Suzu bumps her head and her avatar also has bump on her head.
In U, Suzu becomes Bell, a beautiful singer. One day an avatar called the Beast crashes her concert and is being chased by the Justiciars. One of them says the Beast is nothing but trouble and he will erase the Beast's avatar from U revealing who the real person is. Bell/Suzu wants to find out more about the person behind the avatar.
It was worth a watch and a lot of it kept me captivated but there's at least one shot where the computer animation is horrible and looks out of place with the rest of the scene.
I was kept guessing about who the Beast was until it was revealed. I thought that I had figured it out, but I was wrong.
I was surprised that the film showed an abusive father in a realistic way and how much what he was doing to his sons hurt them not only physically but emotionally as well.

Agreed. I think it's like a mashup of Summer Wars and Beauty and the Beast but the ending could have done a little more.SpoilerLike, why didn't she take the boys home with her? Leaving them with their father wasn't necessarily going to solve the problem. Once she was gone there was nothing to stop him beating the boys again. They could have shown her taking them to a family member's house, from their mother's side perhaps, on her way back to the train station. It wouldn't have been a big scene but it would have been better closure for those characters. And it would have been an interesting bit of irony to have the main Justifier guy BE their dad, who seemed pretty stressed out about his work, which is part of why he beat the boys.
On the Free subject, I played the subless trailer andSpoilerIt seems like Haru's having a crisis and they're all resolving to step up to support him...at one point one of them gets annoyed and tells him to hurry up and realise it. They seem to be talking about a relay so as expected they're probably going to swim one on the international stage.
I'm going to have to go look these up properly though.
I am so amused that you're hunting up voice artists now xD.
...Yuri's VA reminds me of another character from something else.
Edit: And it's Kuroko from Kuroko'sPower RangersBasketball. Well, that's probably why given I've been watching that lately as well.
Tasogare's is fine as Maki, and fine in SpyxFamily, but I want to throw things at him for his earbreaking 'foreigner' Japanese in another series he's in.
Looks like he's also in the cast of Kuroko.
Free:SpoilerI'm guessing Haru had one of his "I can handle everything alone, whoops" moments, like when he weirded out, stood up in the race in season (2?) and then yelled all kinds of stuff at Rin.
...Which I suppose was actually payback for Rin shouting stuff at him in season 1, but there we are.
I'm too lazy to translate the trailer since there's already one out with some kind of subs (I didn't watch that one though).
I noticed that collapse scene as well. I guess post-race, maybe racing the blond guy, whatever his name was (the 'Swedish' guy who has a suspiciously americanised accent :O) I'm really happy it seems to have Rin back in the mix properly. It was fine in the last season but I didn't like him not being with the others any more.
Miyano Mamoru aside, and he tries his best, I also like that Free bothers to have cast for English speaking characters that are native speakers or enough so that you can believe them. I watched some of another series recently with a character who is meant to have studied in England and there's a scene where he's correcting all of his teachers' pronunciations...but horribly.
I looked up the dvd of the first part of the Free special and it costs (in currency conversion) £55, which is probably around $70. For just one dvd. So I will be waiting for CR to pick it up I guess :) I'm sure they will, eventually.
It's funny, although I know Keishuk does have a role in the anime, I feel like most of his stuff is manga so I always forget he has a voice artist...
I just watched the latest ep of SpyxFamily :D Anya's botched grammar attempts at politeness are win.
I thought Devil is a Part Timer ended in a weird spot so a second season is a welcome announcement. There are others out there that would benefit from a second season, too but who knows if that'll happen.
I don't think it messes up for me, but I admit I do a lot of fast forwarding on those eps because of the brief recap and also because Komadai as a team annoy me, especially their pitcher. So I skip over that stuff.
Daiya is better than Haikyuu, just not so many people watch or follow Daiya because it's less accessible without a dub/manga translation. I want a new season of Daiya but I'm also torn because I only want one if they win this game xD.
I love those lines in the DIC promo "Girls will love SM's transformation from everyday schoolgirl into glamorous superhero. Boys will love the nonstop action."
I think Saban was implying that the magical jewels were the source of SM and friends' power and also that Luna would be the link between SM on Earth and Queen Serenity. There needed to be more on how they transitioned to the animated world from the real world.
Saban Moon:SpoilerI'd love to know if they planned to use the other villains, too. I think it's interesting how the cat monster in the pilot is clearly based on Bakene (http://wikimoon.org/index.php/Bakene), that's a pretty deep cut, especially for something like this. All the other recognizable elements in the pilot are just basic SM stuff, and then there's a random mid-series youma in there... I really wonder where they got him from. Maybe Toei just showed them a bunch of youma designs and they picked one at random, idk.
And yeah idk why they didn't properly explain the transitional parts. It's weird since like... I get that this was just a proof-of-concept pitch, but it's just not presenting its concept very well! :P The animated part at the beginning gets the general plot hook across nicely, and then they just lose it completely when they get to the live action bit and just have a bunch of dancing - with one or two lines thrown in that sort of hint at the girls' personalities here - instead of continuing to explain their version of the plot, or introduce the characters, or... gah!! It's so confusing, it doesn't explain anything.I think Saban was implying that the magical jewels were the source of SM and friends' power and also that Luna would be the link between SM on Earth and Queen Serenity. There needed to be more on how they transitioned to the animated world from the real world.
Yeah, that was the impression I got, too. I dunno why they couldn't have just put in a couple more lines explaining that :/ It's weird since the animated parts are... well not fantastic :silly: but they get their point across, you can get a feel for what that part of the show would be like. and then the live action stuff is just a total mess? It feels like they had completely different people working on them or something.
I'll have to look the songs up. Miyano Mamoru is a decent singer/has recorded and Rin is my favourite character xD.
Thanks for the links, ponyfan, I'll check them out :)
While we're sharing links, here's an old Free one with the seiyuu (for Nagisa, Haru, Rin, Rei and Makoto) singing one of the stupidly catchy theme songs (It might be the one with the camel, I can't remember...)
Miyano Mamoru is the tall guy in black with red tartan on his shirt.

I know Hirakawa Daisuke (Rei) is also a decent singer although he has quite a distinctive voice. In the above clip he's wearing glasses and a tie. I also just discovered he was also in Daiya, though I missed him completely xD

Here for the first time because Netflix UK has Studio Ghibli films on it!!! Seen a few already!!!
There are some really cute ones with great stories in them I saw one about this forest & the Iron city or something. It was good. There was another about a bamboo girl whose father seemed obsessed with getting her married to the richest man he could find... but she had other ideas, good for her!!! My Neighbour Totoro is also really adorable, & I love how Totoro & his friends comfort the children. Bakana says Totoro is her ideal xxx I may watch Spirited Away next. I hear good things about it...
I don't think I'd ever watch Grave of the Fireflies. It sounds well-made and all, but reading a synopsis was enough for me.
I feel like whenever you post something seiyuu related, Ponyfan, that I have successfully brainwashed you ;)
I got a cute Fruits Basket/Hello Kitty poster. It shows Tohru with a Hello Kitty bow in her hair and Yuki, Kyo, Momiji and Shigure in human form with their animal ears sticking out of their heads.

OMG I just looked this up and the art is so cuuuute!! :lovey:
I feel like for a mainstream shounen series BnHA is not bad. I can't stand any of the villains, though, and find their motives/actions/everything kind of all over the place. But I do like the class of kids, and Deku/Bakugo's rivalry/mutual competition evolution, etc.
I feel like the villains are always trying to hard, and All for One is OP thus annoying.
I'm not up to date with it though.
I don't think I've seen Ai no Kusabi, but I do remember Nabari no Ou did it for my emotions. And probably not for the reasons most people would think.
Assassination Classroom is on my "to be watched list." I don't know what the ending is, but reading what you're saying about it is making me a little nervous.

I'm rewatching Yona of the Dawn.
Major spoilers in the tags if you haven't read the manga.SpoilerKnowing everything that's been revealed in the manga about how Yuhon and Yona's mother were actually killed and why puts a different perspective on Suwon and Yona's conversation after Yona saw Suwon kill Il. I wanted to shout at the screen that Yuhon was responsible for Kashi's death and Il killed Yuhon in retaliation.
Seeing how Taejun acts in the anime makes me feel a little bad that the anime stopped before we got to see what he's really like.
Ponyfan
I held off with Yona simply because it's a great anime but only such a tiny % of the overall story.
Anime films do get subtitled screenings over here, but they tend to be special "event cinema" rather than a regular screening. I think Showcase is screening Suzume with subs... I haven't really looked into it since I'm not really familiar with Makoto Shinkai's stuff, it doesn't really grab me.
There's also the annual Scotland Loves Anime film festival which does limited screenings at select arthouse theatres, although I'll admit I only know about that because they did the Ojamajo Doremi movie last year :B I'd never heard of it before then, heck I only found out about it last year purely by chance.
I have been looking out for any information on Daiya Act II getting another season, but nothing yet. I guess April 2023 isn't going to happen. Maybe autumn? Maybe next year? I can't imagine it won't happen.
Yeah, Tenki no Ko (shorter to write, LOL) kind of has a plot, works, and then goes off on a weird meander which doesn't seem to end satisfactorily. The art is pretty but I admit, I didn't even notice the brief scene of the characters from Kimi no Na Wa.
True.
On the other hand, you have names like Spirited Away, which takes the concept of kami-kakushi from the original title (literally the concept of kami abducting or hiding people who go missing) and anglicises it in a way that makes the underlying idea comprehensible, even if the words are totally different.
All that said, there's so much more now than we had going back even ten years. I'm showing my age now, but I love that it's possible to stream so many series now that would never have made it here before.
There are so many things Japan has that don't come over into English. I mean, Daiya's manga is literally years behind in translation, and only available digitally I think? Daiya's a longer running series than Haikyuu and massively successful over there, but even in the US, where baseball is a big deal, it hasn't had the attention Haikyuu has. Haikyuu is cool and all, but very safe in comparison to Daiya. Maybe that's part of the reason. I dunno.

Quick question!
Where does everyone go to watch anime?
I've mainly used crunchyroll, but with them putting most of their stuff behind a paywall and lots of other sites adding anime, I was wondering where I'd most likely get my moneys worth.
(Also taking notes of every show mentioned in this thread I don't already know. Can never get too much).
I'm a football (soccer) person though. ;) I have watched a few football anime, the best being the one that has a very brutal first episode, name eluding me right now. ButSpoilerwhen they kill off a main character in ep 1 of a sports anime you know they mean business.

That sounds like an interesting anime. Is it "Knight in the Area" (Area no Kishi)? It came up in a Google search.
I would love to see more Yona anime, even if they only dealt with the volumes after 8, because we all need more Taejun. We just do.
...I was rewatching some of Daiya season 2 lately.SpoilerThe first time I watched Inajitsu v Ugumori I felt like it was karma after THAT summer game with Seidou, but now, with the hindsight of the other game, I think about it a bit differently, and there's Kunitomo observing the lack of leader in his team with Harada gone, and then sending Itsuki with Fukui to watch the Seidou game (Miyuki)...it really underpins how much the thing that Inajitsu doesn't have, for all the things it does, is basically Miyuki. And a team that operates around that core, as a team, rather than just a bunch of talented individuals. Subtle moralising there!
My only real complaint is that the case it comes in is horrible, it doesn't have enough space for both discs?? One of them just loosely slides in behind the other. This is the first DVD/BD combo set I've bought (yeah, I know, I'm old), is this sort of box design standard for them? :s
There's a new trailer for Sailor Moon Eternal Cosmos featuring The Three Lights/Sailor Starlights. I'm putting t in in a spoiler because it does give some important information away about them if you're not familiar with the SM manga.Spoiler

I haven't read the Stars arc of the manga. Are the Three Lights supposed to be brothers when they're in their human disguises?

None of my DVD/Blu Ray sets so far have been like that. There's always been plenty of room for all of the discs although a few have had them slightly stacked on top of each other where you have to take Disc 1 out to get Disc 2.
I saw Yuri on Ice but I don't really understand why it was so hyped. Genuinely. I have no problem with the BL undertones. I just don't think it was that good *lol*I'm re-watching it right now. ^.^

The themes of confronting anxiety and self doubt, and challenging your self image in order to allow for personal growth really resonate with me. Plus there's a lot of detail in the character's actions and quirks that make so much sense once you learn more about their histories and I love that. I can totally get it not being someone's cup of tea but it's honestly one of my favorite anime. I think I've watched through it once a year at least since it aired.
I'm holding out hope that the movie will eventually be completed and maybe a season 2 will get made.
@Ponyfan - there are a lot of pieces of Horimiya missing in the anime adaptation :/ Are you saying they're going back to reanimate some of those? The style they used for that series was great, as were the voice artists, but it's sad that some things were omitted. Some of my favourite manga scenes likeSpoilerthe trip to Kyoto and the excuses to get out of swimming...
Where does everyone go to watch anime?Mostly Funimation. I had Crunchyroll for a long time but they started blocking VPN access and I never restarted my account when I left China. I also use Netflix and WeTV for chinese animation/shows.
Randomly looking for dvds of Saiyuuki zeroin (the only Saiyuuki anime I don't have a DVD for yet) and came across this...

Have you checked RightStuf? It's the last week of their birthday sale and I think they had some of the Saiyuuki animes on sale.

It's more a problem that there only seems to be a blu ray release :/ It seems mad given that the series is as old as it is, both the manga and the anime...that the final animated section would only be available in the one format, but hey. There we are.
The Burial arc wasn't ever released in the west on DVD as far as I know; I had to get a Japanese ex library copy second hand for that one :/ Maybe this will end up being the same - but right now it doesn't look like there are dvds anywhere.
In the meantime, happily it's still on hidive, and is genuinely the only reason I still have a hi dive sub.

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot of animes are being released only on blu-ray. It's caused some problems for the library where I work because the librarians are hesitant to purchase a blu-ray only copy when most people around here only have DVD players. We still have people ask us for VHS tapes.
Keep checking to see if there's an announcement to animate the rest of Daiya but not so far. Sigh.
I was surprised to see a picture of Mao from The Devil is a Part Timer on McDonald's Facebook page today. I'm not exactly sure what they're doing but it's something called a "Tie in Meal" and they mentioned several movies/tv shows that have featured McDonald's in some way.

Yeah, I heard they were doing meals "As Featured In" TV and Movies, so you can order a meal "as Featured in Loki" right now and it looks like it comes with a Sweet and Sour sauce packet with the Loki logo on it. So since The Devil is a Part-Timer basically takes place in a McDonald's (but not called McDonald's), it doesn't surprise me they might use that as an inspiration.
I'd love to see more of Yona animated. Even if it was only the first stretch of manga after the series ends, because TAEJUN.
Yes...SpoilerZeno is actually fascinating on so many levels.
As for Taejun, if you only watched the anime, you'd never realise what an amazing character he is.
It amuses me that Daiya taught me what "baka" means in Japanese. :D I was watching a Sailor Moon clip in Japanese and Rei said "baka" several times. I don't need the subtitles for that word.
Ponyfan
I watched the first season of Demon Slayer since everyone always talks about it. Not too bad
LOL yeah, Eijun's other name could be 'baka' really, considering how many times he gets called it.

It's been a while since I watched Daiya, but I think Mochi calls Eijun "bakamura" or something like that early on. I guess it's fitting since Eijun gives everyone nicknames.
I read a Daiya fanfic that was partly based on Bungo Stray Dogs.That's...scary. LOL XD
Small Sailor Moon rant aheadSpoilerI don't get why so many people don't seem to understand that
Mamoru is basically the guardian/prince of the Earth. He can use the powers of the Golden Crystal much like Usagi can use the Sliver Crystal. I think Helios can also use some of the powers of the Golden Crystal, but I think it's more a case of protecting it until Mamoru can use its power on his own.
Ponyfan
Hang on...SpoilerI thought it was flat out said he was the prince of Earth. So it always made sense to me that he had powers just like Usagi, who was the princess of the Moon. Do people really not understand that? Weird.
SpoilerHis name is Mamoru. It literally means 'to protect'. It's been a long time since I watched any SM but that seems pretty obvious...o.O.
Finally Heaven Official's Blessing had ep 6 animated but still no Qi Rong. I don't like Qi Rong at all, but I want to know how they're going to handle yelling-sweary-brat given all the censorship.

I've seen/heard a lot about Heaven's Official Blessing, but haven't got in to it yet.
There's a couple of trailers for the Sign of Affection anime.

I thought I heard some familiar voices in the trailer and it turns out Eijun's va and Asada's va in Dayia have roles in this anime too.
Ponyfan
I've been watching the apothecary diaries. It's annoying waiting week by week for an episode though.
