Here's a couple tutorial for cosplay wings:

I'm sure it could be done on a smaller scale for customs, though materials may need to be changed so they're no too heavy.

I haven't tried them and I don't know if any tutorials exist, but I suggest you study the anatomy of real bird wings to get an idea of how they work and how the feathers are laid, and try to make a simplified version of that.

Here's my favourite bird wing tutorial, very useful not only for drawing but also sculpting and the general study of wings. :)

Magweno makes amazing art dolls with real feather wings, some of them are even fully articulated:

http://fav.me/d6wbs2u
http://fav.me/d5zce8b

I'm not saying you should try anything that complicated, but they can offer some inspiration and tips on how to attach the feathers even if you're going for static wings instead of posable ones.

I would probably start by drawing the rough shape on cardboard or heavyweight paper, cutting it up and attaching that to the pony's body to make an armature, maybe use some wire for the 'arm' for extra durability. (See step 3 in the wing tutorial, although it would need to be narrower, the size of the coverts at max rather than the whole wing.) The feathers could then be glued onto that, or sewn, or attached by whatever method you choose. This is why the armature needs to only extend to the tips of the covert feathers - your wings will only have one layer of primaries and secondaries so they will look more natural but you can glue covert feathers on both top and bottom of the wing to hide the paper armature. Unless you're dreaming of huuuge wings, they would need to be simplified: fewer feathers per each "group", skip some feather groups altogether (scapulars etc.)... just play around until it looks good, it doesn't have to be anatomically correct either.

Like I said, I've never tried this myself so I can't promise it will work, and it's just one approach, I'm sure there are many ways to go about it. I hope it offers you a starting point, though! Maybe someone with actual experience will pop in and give some better tips. :) Good luck!

I actually glued the feathers onto a piece of felt and then glued the felt to this pony aggggggges ago.

And this one, not long after the first..... I honestly can't remember how I secured the feathers on her though! XD Pretty sure it involved some superglue. ;)

Good luck!!! I love to see real feathers on customs. It makes them look so soft and surreal.

In my experience, real feathers begin to disintegrate after about six years, so while it's a great idea I personally wouldn't do it. ^^; I like my work to last.

My Mother in Law has the brown pony and she's had it for seven years. She has taken very good care of it and it still looks and feels wonderful. I suppose it would depend on the environment that it was kept in, though..

Really? I would have thought the feathers would have broken down by then; although as you said it could depend on the environment, or the variety of feathers. The feathers I have are from ducks or chickens.

What color? They sell pre-made ones for making Christmas tree angels and dolls if you want solid colors?
