Tutorial: Making your own Re-hairing Needle
« on: March 31, 2012, 05:13:23 PM »
I love using the tool method to rehair but the needles do break randomly so its always handy to be able to create your own needle. I am not sure if someone has already posted a tutorial on this before, but I couldn't find one when I needed help so I thought this may help others. I know people do this all types of ways. This just happens to be a method that I have had the most luck with. I hope this can help others.

I don't see an arrow in the pic for step 1 but looks pretty simple and easy :)

This is so great! My rehairing tool just broke a few weeks ago and I was worried I wouldn't be able to replace it!

Thank you. I totally know how you feel. I went through the same exact thing. It sadly took me over 4 months to get the guts to try making my own needles. I had someone make me some and paid for them, but the needles they used were too small and quickly broke. Avoid using the super small needles. Its easier to just sand down the larger ones if needed or just widen your hair plugs before you rehair. Its great to make your own because then you can buy a pack with random sizes and choose the one that fits you best.

You can also use a pair of wire cutters (like, tools, not jewelry ones) to cut.
Or if you have a dremel.... ^.^

I haven't tried the dremel, but I heard its the fastest method. lol You made a great side note to make sure you don't use jewelry wire cutters. They are useless on cutting the tips off (learned the hard way). I tried the regular wire cutter method, but I would only get a nice cut about 1/3 times and I always had to track my parts (although I wasn't always successful). I made the mistake of trying wire cutters in my living room and was paranoid for the next few days that I was going to step on my lost needle parts.

Oh, it's definitely a risk. Somepony got the pointy end of a needle stuck in her foot and now I have to cut over a trashcan or inside a box. OR.... I put a piece of styrofoam on the ends so that when they do go flying, I know where they end up. ^.^

Dremeling is best and allows for the smoothest finish. I used to cut mine, but got a $10 dremel thing from Harbor Freights and now it's easier.

Gotta agree. I love my dremmel. Selling needles and tools has repaid the cost of my dremmel, so It was worth it to me :)

How do you use a Dremel? I know I've used wire cutters but I've always had a hard time cutting the eyes even with the non-jewelry wire cutters...

I grasp the needle in a pair of pliers and hold it so that looking straight down at it, I can see the opening of the eye fully. I brace my hand and the pliers against the edge of the table. I use the hard sanding bit from the dremmel, and just sand the needle down at an angle a little at a time till I have just barely cut away the tip of the eye.

I put the needle in the tool and then use the flat discs to cut the eye at an angle.  Then flip it and cut the length.
