How to fix frizzy hair?
« on: July 29, 2012, 02:13:30 PM »
I'll be going through and setting up all my ponies soon and I know for a fact that a bunch of them have frizzy hair.

So my question is, what is the best way to fix this and make it all smooth n shiny again? And do keep in mind I'm a nervous nelly :P I wouldn't dare to go near my ponies with one of those flattening irons (not sure what you call it). I don't even own one XD

So besides that, what are your suggestions? :)

I used a regular iron because I don't own a flat iron. It's quite easy, you just set it to nylon. :P I understand if you think it's scary to use heat on their hair but it helps. Seems to work better on some ponies than others. It did wonders for my Peach Blossom. The hair was wet and drenched in conditioner when I did it.

I have a flat iron, and I've straightened doll hair with it on the lowest setting. It has come out really good. I like it... but I don't think that helps you, because you said you don't have one... *whoops* sorry

Hehe, people do seem to really recommend a flat iron over all or a normal iron. And I don't doubt any of you guys for a second.
I'm just so nervous I'm gonna have it set too hot and the hair just melts - or worse the pony >.<

Other than the flat iron, I've also heard of people using boiling water to get frizz out of the pony's hair.

You can always try dipping the hair in very very water to start off with - dip, later it in conditioner, allow it to soak and then brush and wash out - repeat several times.

This doesn't guarantee to fix the hair or completely defizz but if you don't want to use straighteners or a regular iron perhaps its a good first go? And if that doesn't work you can move on to something braver :)

To add on to the question... is there a point where the hair gets too frizzy and dried out to save? I've got a brush and grow with hair in HORRIBLE condition. super dry and super frizzy and she has tinsel in her hair too.... and I'm trying to figure out if I can fix it, because I can't rehair without breaking the mechanism

I'll give it a try, I'm just skeptical on if it will work or not, lol her hair is worse than I've ever seen a pony's hair.

Has anyone flat ironed tinsel hair before? Or would I be better off pulling the few ratty pieces of tinsel left on her out?

I've flat ironed tinsel a billion times. It doesnt change it much, it just sometimes makes it go in the same direction as the hair (key word: sometimes). If they're super brittle and hardly noticable, I'd rip them out. It would look better anyway. Also, before you do any flat ironing, I would recommend you do the whole conditioner thing first. It smooths out their hair and thus not having to straighten it as long!

yeah the tinsel is kinda ragged... I'll probably just pull it out. it's going to need a lot of conditioner I think lol

I agree with either using a flat iron on a really really low setting, or conditioning and brushing. Although I always prefer to use my flat iron as I'm too lazy to wait for conditioner and the hair to dry afterwards, hehe

I have heard of using fabric softener to fix frizzy hair.   Not sure if you would use it just like shampoo/conditioner, or if you need to use another product on the hair afterwards.   I was actually thinking of posting a question regarding the use of it.

You could always practise on a bait first.

Otherwise I suggest using the "shine conditioner" you know the stuff that is so full of silicone you would never use it on your own hair as it would look greasy in minutes? That stuff works wonders on ponies. Just shampoo as you normally would (mine actually come in the shower with me - it's a bonding excercise) then lay the conditoner on thick and leave for half an hour. Brush pony with one of those large combs for curly hair while you rinse conditioner out.
