Title: Removing dirt stains?
Post by: TheBeatlesPkmnFan42 on March 16, 2018, 01:52:39 PM
So on Monday I thrifted two G1 ponies the Goodwill - Baby Tiddley-Winks and Forget-Me-Not. They were both caked in dirt, but Baby Tiddley-Winks especially had it bad. I used a magic eraser on them as I do with all my thrifted ponies, and that got the dirt off, but the dirt left some stains that are being pretty stubborn.

Here's what they both look like after I used the Magic Eraser (I have before photos in this Imgur album (https://imgur.com/a/NGzyh)), photo is from a couple days ago:

I just got done trying to use the OxiClean boiling method (with Baby Tiddley-Winks at least, apparently OxiClean is bad on Flutter pony tabs?) and it didn't seem to make any sort of difference. Did I use the wrong type of OxiClean (the whitening one for laundry)? Should I have actually boiled the water as opposed to simply using hot water from the tap? Did I not leave her in long enough? I couldn't find any information on if there is a specific kind of OxiClean you should use or exactly how long you usually leave the pony in for, I think the maximum amount of time I had her in there was a little over five minutes.

Is there anything else that could remove these dirt stains?

Are you sure it's dirt? It may just be the lighting, but it almost looks like rust stains to me. I've got a seapony that has rust stains and I've never been able to get them off. Even tried CLR and it didn't help :(

Baby-Tiddley Winks did have tail rust, which I cleaned out a couple days ago (while Forget-Me-Not was rust free, aside from that a ponytail holder in her hair had rusted and stained her hair), but the stuff that they were caked in when I thrifted them was very clearly dirt/soil, and these stains that they were left behind with after using the Magic Eraser was where the dirt/soil was.

It definitely looks like something stained the plastic. The heat from the water would have dislodged the dirt or at least removed some of it otherwise.

Yeah, it is 100% a stain, I got all the dirt itself off, but it must have been there for so long that it had stained the plastic itself, and I'm wondering how one goes about getting these stains out. I know sunfading can help pen stains, could it help stains caused by other things as well? Of course I'd have to cover Baby Tiddley-Winks' hair really well as she has fading pink hair if I were to try sunfading her.

Oh I'd totally suggest sunfading. It seems like it does wonders, but just make sure she doesn't burn! I'd ask around to make sure she isn't known for browning. And yes, covering the hair would be a great idea.
You could always try to paint over the stain, too.

Yep, sunfading should do it. And you are correct about oxi clean being bad for flutter tabs. Like you said, be sure to cover her hair really well and make sure she doesn't burn!

Thanks guys! I'll try my hand at sunfading her maybe in the next few weeks, it's still Winter and I live in Washington so it's still cloudy semi-often, but there has been more sunny days recently!

The marks on your Baby TW look a lot like the ones on my Starflower's legs. On her they have gone into the plastic and have started breaking it down in one spot. I hope that it is not the same and that sunfading sorts it out. I would take a photo, but Starflower is mysteriously missing at the moment, pesky pony.

If its rust, worth trying to dip the foot in some cola?
