Title: Collecting Everything Twice? Opinions / Questions? (Basic Fun)
Post by: WingsOfMasquerade on January 16, 2019, 10:07:53 PM
With the newest Basic Fun announcements...I'm in a quandary...
What do you think of collecting everything twice?

Because that's what it's shaping up to be for me.  How are you doing it? Where are you putting them all? MIB or opening? There's lots of dilemmas, so I'm looking for opinions and am just plain curious to see what everyone else is up to. (Variant lovers or variant haters alike)

For Starters: I am a variant lover.
I've gotten more-so over time, where 'keep both' looks REALLY appealing. Basic Fun is still going really strong, now skipping ahead into the year 3's Second-Set Rainbows. This is WAY exciting for me, and probably everyone else too because those were notorious for loads of nasty unfixable flaws like centerpoint/cancer and regrind hot spots and like gross discoloring & glitter rust that no one can fix. I would completely expect these to be super popular with everyone who already has them, just for the sake of getting them cheaply enough in good shape and made of plastic that you know doesn't have regrind.

But what about Bowtie & AJ?
These are really faithful it looks like from the photos...but...what if yours are already in good condition? Do you buy again anyway? Keep yours loose and the BF BD MIB? (They may pick Heartthrob and Surprise or something next...neither of whom are rare nor problematic...so, the issue is likely to continue) If yours aren't terrible, is there less motive to get these? (Like, the super-duper-crisp white on Glory/Moondancer was too tempting for everything)

I did buy the CP again because they were the most faithful of repros of those, so I kept them on as 'variants' but that means I have the originals, the old 2000s ones and now these so that's 3 of each CP character. Then I bought the rainbows again.....but the French box ones with the heart shape of smell holes, Sunlight has different glitter/dense symbol and that Parasol French box actually smells good instead of....wiiieeeerd? like the normal one so I got those 2 as well cause I can't stand regular Parasol smell.

But now....SCENTLESS Rainbows???
So those 6 AGAIN but without the smell. Because why? Do they suspect that the perfume in the plastic is going to discolor them and make them gross in 1 year? Were people complaining? People have already found head/body different ones of these. I even had to return a Moonstone. Do you buy all six of them again, and then just keep your scented? Were will you put everything? Like--I'm fast running out of space on shelves even though I added a new one. Are you going to ditch your scented for fear of conditions developing later and replace them with the scent-free ones for sake of stability?

I mean, we all know that buying BD repros & popularizing them as much as possible is the best thing to do because we could see those ultra-rare adult expensive seaponies get made, or 10 dollar Mimic or (of course) the Celestials because we begged for those and if they do well with these 'normal ponies' it could branch out into G1 actually coming back for real with all new sets of characters.

How do you feel about collecting like....all of G1 again? I mean best case scenario they make literally everything eventually.

Because it looks like that's what's happening to me since BD BF keeps on going. I can't resist new G1s in stores, it's just so surreal and exciting to me STILL.

I got Minty cuz I only had a hard 2008  Minty, and Starshine because scented white pony in a favorite pose even though I have all the rainbows. I only intend to get ponies I already want that are worth more than $10 if vintage, like Confetti.

For me it's about two things. Nostalgia and, I hope, final fulfilment of a gap in my childhood ;)

I have three collector ponies. I like all of them better than the originals.

I have three Rainbow ponies. One was my childhood first pony so I have her twice. The others are Moonstone, who was a gift from my sister and Parasol, who was my curiosity when the line first came out. I don't feel the need to have full sets of either of these.

No other wave is in the UK yet. BUT if wave 3 and wave 4 come to the UK, they will close a gap that Hasbro left in the eighties. Not so much AJ's set, I'm not fussed about them really - but the uni/peg set and the y3 rainbows were in our comics but never sold here. So they will actually be on sale in the UK for the first time ever if they get over here (Brexit chaos permitting, I am quite worried about that).

That makes them new enough for me. I have all of the ponies BF are releasing in their original releases, and also some variants, some even MOC. But although I have a couple of the y3 rainbows on US card, I don't feel I ever had them from new. I never got to go into stores to buy these sets...

So the chance to do that and have them from new and be their original owner...would be really nice for me.

I will therefore probably want to get all of those.

With the y3 rainbow set, I also have a project of getting versions of all of them in different kinds of packaging. So I have confetti and starflower on US card, Spanish Pinwheel on the first Spanish card, Spanish/NC Trickles on the second spanish card...and I have German Flutterbye (Hummelchen). I'm missing Tickle - so she would be my priority for one to keep MIB. But otherwise I really want to get them to play with them from new in the store for the first time ever...

To fill that gap I had as a kid, when I used to read about them, but never got to own them.

If they go on to produce other US sets, like the SS ponies, I dunno...SS ponies I probably would buy because they would be mint - but the reason I am so captivated by some of these early ponies is that chance to get a pony the UK never had with wave 3 and 4 (and I hope with Surprise's set as well). And while I'd like the nostalgia of getting CJ at some point in the future as another early childhood pony...I am less worried about US ponies not in UK stories or ponies being released with US names.

I intend to get Sunbeam because shes my favorite/ponysona inspiration. Though Ive yet to find her in stores.

Im definitely struggling to resist buying everything again! But I will not. Both for real space reasons, and also because I do feel guilty about hoarding new plastic. At least preowned, previously produced plastic, Im like, theoretically keeping it out of a landfill. Vs supporting more plastic being produced. NO judgement upon others (my wife buys all the new G4) its just something I feel personally guilty about.

The temptation is REAL though!!! If they literally produce everything G1, Im sure there are ponies that I'll acquire. Ones that are worth more than 9.99 but I personally wouldnt pay what their vintage counterpart is worth. We'll just have to wait and see. But like you said, rare adult sea ponies, ect. Things like that will definitely make their way into my collection if their authentic counterpart is too out of my price range.

I mean. :) Lots of people have dupes and armies...

But for me personally.

I will get a duplicate if there's a reason to. I will not replace a pony if that pony was a gift. I would consider upgrades replacing old with new.

I have a Moonstone that has the slightest mismatch. I'm not replacing her-- she's for my kid as a toy so it's not a big deal.

That said. I feel like toys aren't made to last, so I assume these things will break down within 15 years. I'm fine with that. And anything I get will be played with by my kiddo.

If this would of rolled out 10 years ago I would of bought every one without hesitation. (except the first six because bleh). But now I only focus on my favorites. So if they get to later years I'll buy them, but it's probably not likely. I am hoping we get at least get some minty so softs *__* (I promise I won't take them into the pool this time!!)

And just a side note. I wonder how many people would jump on mimic, munchy or Goldilocks. 😀

I try not to collect more then one, though it has happened. If you are running out of space, perhaps buy one as an upgrade and put the older, damaged ones back out on the market unless they hold sentimental value. Such as from a family member, friend, or a super lucky find.

That's my personal advice, but do what you feel is best.

Did you get the rainbows 10 years ago or were they too low quality/hard to find? I got the CP back then and currently have that Minty in my new Minty box. Tempted to do that with Starshine as well.

The 25th anniversary are what got me into collecting as an adult (I wanted to like g3s but they felt like a knock off to me). That said my mom found the set with Minty at a store that sells old/unwanted stock. So I didn't see any others normal shelves.

The quality of those didn't bother me. ^^; I just was stoked for ponies! And I had the money to burn and less obligations at that time.. heh.

I bought Windy, Sunlight and Moonstone, although I only opened the Sunlight box (the pony has some factory stain) but I put it back in its box. This reissue I really like because the quality is quite good , the problem is that due to the lack of space ... I do not know where to put them! But in any case I will continue buying and keeping them in their original box, and they are not excessively expensive.Alghuien told me that we should buy three reissue ponies: One to open, another to save and another to resell later. I like to have them in box, since in its day (when I was small) it was not possible.
How am I feeling? But a little sad because I know that, obviously, the sets of ponies are not going to come out. I have to buy them in amazon because they do not arrive in Spain. I would like some set of babies and pony brothers to come out .

The 25th anniversary releases barely appeared here, I certainly never saw them, so this is the first retro release for me. Maybe that makes a difference...first time I've seen G1 in stores since 1990s. And I was too young to see cps or rainbows in store and remember it anyway...

I'm on the bandwagon, but haven't hit the point of full on wanting every released pony. I absolutely had to have: Blue Belle and Starshine. Snagged Starshine last weekend at Target, I think she smells like coffee...
Hubby was at Target a few days after x-mas and snagged me two, the rest a lady grabbed as the person was stocking the shelf. I also have Parasol (poot poot, I'm such a spoiled brat I will vent here in saying she really is my least favorite G1) and Skydancer. At this point I could take or leave the rest, do I really need the same ponies over and over again? I wish they'd just do complete sets boxed together, then I might raise an eyebrow and fork out some dinero...
Will they stay in the box, absolutely yes. All the 25th anniversary sets are sealed. Will I order online for any, nope, I like the thrill of the hunt!

-nod- I'm on the fence too. I think it's awesome that these exist, but.. do I really need repros of ponies I already have..? I can't decide. XD I told myself I'd probably only get Cotton Candy, and then when the collector ponies finally showed up near me.. oh I caved. XP and bought 'em all.

Not sure what I'll be doing with the others. I guess it depends on if they all get released over here or not, for one.. I dunno. On the one hand I'm like "I don't need another Applejack!", on the other hand, I know I'll probably feel differently when I see her on the shelves. :P So I don't know how I feel about this subject, my thoughts on it change every other minute ^^;

I bought every wave that has come out in 2018. I think I'm going to skip the scentless rainbows because mine don't have any problems thus far. I'm keeping them in the box, since I have almost all of the original versions of them. I considered buying a second Butterscotch to de-box, but decided against it.
I'm not sure if I'm going to buy ALL of the 2019 waves. I know for sure I want some of the year 3 rainbows because they're going to be sO NICE to have without those age spots or rust, but the sitting ponies and shy ponies? My Applejack is in stunning condition, so I'm not sure...but I don't want Basic Fun to stop making them.

Due to my asthma and the first issue of Rainbows almost being a no go unless MIB. I'll buy doubles of Windy and Sky Dancer as mine cannot be taken out. Already have an otherwise great condition but tailless Moondancer and a slightly loved Glory from thrifting. Will buy both of the reissues for them, normally I don't collect doubles of anything.

But Basic Fun has made me want to, also my MIB ponies are displayed with my out of box ones. Makes a nice showing of what they look like in both forms. That' just me, you do you and do what you like. I've loved reading everyone's replies.

Unfortunately we don't have them here, but if we did, I'd probably just buy the selective few that strike my fancy at that moment. I honestly don't see the point of buying all these ponies for my collection, they aren't even "real" anyway. However, I would love it so much to experience the magic of buying a G1 from a toy store again! :D That's why I would pick just two or three favourites. I would probably open them, but put them back in the package for display purposes. ^.^

Anyway, I really don't get why they don't make any actual NEW sets, G1 style. That would be so much cooler...

Yes, it's such an awesome initiative. :D But unfortunately I only like a few of them. With all due respect, but most of the colour schemes don't give me that "pony feeling" that takes you back to the G1 era.

Same as a kid. I snatched up all the 25th anniversary ponies as a preteen and wanted almost every G1 I saw at secondhand shops. The only ones I really specifically wanted were Lofty and Paradise (until I found out Lofty was yellow not white).

I bought 2 sets of the Baaic Fun 35th anniverasry ponies (one set to open and one to keep MIB) I had hoped to buy 2 sets of the Rainbow and unicorn/pegasus sets also but I haven’t been able complete one set of the Rainbows or unicorn/pegasus ponies. With the recent news of the Earth and year 3 Rainbows ponies I’m starting to rethink getting 2 sets of each.

I love them all and have bought everything I've seen so far. Part of the appeal is the packaging, so I'm not opening. If I run out of room, more things will have to be packed away until I can make room. Waiting for the unicorn and pegasus wave to hit locally. I just found the other three scented Rainbow Ponies that I needed last weekend. I don't intend to buy the unscented ones, though. I'm still trying to decide whether or not to open the Pretty Parlor.

I've been able to ignore most of these as I told myself I already have them. These newest however  I will probably get the second set of Rainbows as I'm missing two, 3 are variants and one is baity. Also I love the sitting poses, Bowtie looks like she has lighter pink hair and Applejack us favorite pony:)

I am so very excited to see these next ones in person!

I got the six collector ponies and the rainbow ponies for the 35th anniversary gimmick, as I have the 25th ann. sets too.  But after that, why do I want more of the same pony?  I did buy Twilight, Medley and Sunbeam to have mint and pretty, but I left behind Firefly, Moondancer and Glory cause I have so many doubles already by way of buying lots.
As we move forward, I don't know what I'll do.  I don't need more of the same thing.  Maybe a MIB Pinwheel as she was the second pony I got as a child after Windy, but really no more.

I've been super good so far and only bought pretty parlor so I can at least display my original with a box and have a twinkles since I haven't gotten an original one yet! But this next release is going to be super hard for me, All the year 2s I got with pretty parlor as a hand me down from cousins and they are all new and flawless and ugh.... I know I don't need two of everything!

I have decided not to collect all of them. I have all 6 of the CP set only because I can no longer return them to the store. I did end up returning my complete rainbow set, and only bought Firefly and Glory from the 3rd set. I just don't want to spiral out of control and feel I need to collect every re-released pony. By letting some slip through now, I eliminate any desire to do so down the road

I'll be buying them all except repeats like the non scented Rainbows. I haven't decided yet if I'll be deboxing them or not. Space is limited but I'm still working on the collection room so we'll see what I come up with for display.

I’m getting duplicates. I have my original release ponies and am buying one of each of the Basic Fun ones. I originally wanted to buy 2 of each of the Basic Fun ones so I could keep one in the box  and take the other out, but that would have been too costly. My original ones will be the ones out of box and my Basic Fun ones will stay in the box. I just can’t turn away from the Basic Fun ones as they are quite well done, have lovely packaging, and for the most part have brighter colours. The accessories were a big deal for me too. Although, I was disappointed with the reusing of Rainbow Brushes and the discontinuation of stickers, with the Unicorn and Pegasus set. I hope Canada gets this set and the new ones soon! The 25th anniversary sets never made it to stores around me so I do not have those, other than 1-2 collector ones that came in lots I bought.  They weren’t nice enough for me to try and find and order online. I do love the Basic Fun ones though and would be thrilled if they redid the entirety of the G1 line although I don’t think it’ll go quite that far. I’d love reissues of the UK ponies we never got as well.

I’ve also been buying the Basic Fun ones as gifts for my niece and friends’ little girls. I want to spread the G1 love to new generations.  My niece hadn’t really played with the duplicate loose ponies I gave her until she unboxed one of the new ones. She loves them now, and uses the litttle comb and brush to style all their hair.

I would love to, but I can't afford to buy all of them once, let alone twice.

They don't sell them in store where I live, so I have to buy them online. A single loose 35th Anniversary pony costs about $35-$45 with shipping and taxes included. The 5 piece rainbow pony pack cost me $107, but it was an early Christmas present to myself, so I splurged a little. I then got myself Minty and will probably get 1 or 2 unicorns. I'd love to get them all, but it's cheaper for me to just buy the real ones at those prices.

I’ve been buying select ponies of each set so far. I have Cotton Candy (who was my first childhood pony), Snuzzle (my army pony),Windy, Moonstone, and Skydancer (favourite rainbows). I am hoping that wave three makes it to Canada and I would buy them all because that is my favourite set ever. I also have the Pretty Parlour (which I haven’t opened yet because it is a bribe to myself to get my pony room organized).

But that’s going to be it for me. I have no desire to have modern duplicates of all my vintage ponies. And I also feel like having a few 35th anniversary rereleases is cool, but having an entire second collection...?

With the exception of the Pretty Parlour, these will all stay in box. I’m going to attach hang tags to them and display them on the wall with my 25th anniversary sets.

I haven't bought any 35th anniversary ponies, nor do I intend to because well... I'm simply not interested in doing exactly what you said. Buying the same ponies all over again.

The originals from the 80's and 90's are the ones I'm interested in. Partially because of the nostalgia attached to them. Newly produced ones just doesn't have that for me.

If Basic Fun start producing the prototype G1's (as has been discussed in another thread) of for example NBBE Baby Shady and unicorn Baby Truly then that's a whole other story and I would be throwing my money at them. (Someone suggested in that thread to write Basic Fun and make this suggestion to them, so I'm now working on a letter to them :) ).

But for as along as they just keep re-releasing ponies then I'm going to pass.

I think I may buy my daughter the ones that she keeps taking from my collection (Applejack especially) because the one I have is sentimental.  I never had her as a child (too young when Y1-2 were on shelves) and soon after I got married and moved to Canada, my husband went to the thrift store to look for ponies for me.  and he found me Applejack!   I had had to purge ~99% of my MASSIVE collection in order to move and I had very very few ponies on my shelves.  The Wall of Happy was mostly his, and he wanted me to have things displayed on it.

Althooooooooooooough I am torn, Applejack is a TOY and should be PLAYED with!  By a CHILD!  I can't pour the love and attention into the toy that I once had time for... I'm kind of Toy Story-thinking like that.... or maybe the Oddkins in Dean Koontz's book.

Anyway I would much rather her plant herself in the MLP aisle and refuse to leave the retros on the shelf than have her obsessed with whatever blind bag scam is popular this week.  LOL Surprise, Hairdorables, Shopkins, Num Nums, all these insane things... it's as wild as the 90's was with all the girl toylines to keep track of.  PONIES.  I will be happy to buy more ponies for children who will LOVE them.  :)

Plus it will make thrifting even more interesting in 10 years!

I don’t have all of the originals... but... I will probably buy one of each of the remakes and two of the ones that I don’t have... so I can take them out of the box.  At least, that’s what I have been doing.

OMG I'm so sick of blindbag surprise everything! like yeah I liked some of that as a kid.... but it's just so cheap and lazy from a design standpoint. Plus the gambling aspect of them  :enraged:

For me, the 35th anniversary ponies aren't really G1s, so I wouldn't buy them as substitutes for ponies I don't have. I haven't seen them in real life (none of our local shops have them), and of course seeing G1s in a shop wouldn't be such a nostalgic thing for me as I didn't have them the first time around. Really, they're something that I'm happy exists for collectors and kids who want them, but am not too bothered about for myself.

Now if they start rereleasing accessories and ponywear, I'd be interested! I want those things to play with, and I often can't justify the price or am saddened by the dilapidated state of the vintage accessories. I basically bought the 35th anniversary Parlour so that I could have shiny new non-flattened hats and the different-mould Twinkles (I'm obsessed with collecting different versions of Twinkles and Catnip). I also kept Peachy, but ended up sending the rest of the set on to make someone else happy as I don't really have space for playsets. So, Basic Fun, if you're reading this, tiny accessories and ponywear, please! But keep making the ponies for those who like them and because I love the idea of a new generation of kids getting into G1-style ponies and building a collection without having to scour charity shops or pay eBay prices :).

Hmm I have bought 1 of each pony so far because of the opportunity to buy g1 style ponies in the store and to support line. To be honest I don't care about any that have been released so far, the earliest ponies I had in my collection were from Year 5 the year I was born. So being all these ponies are from before then they are not nostalgic to me (and I don't really think they are so cute compared to later year ponies)

now I'm not so sure what to do, they keep making more and I want to support them... 60$ is hardly anything to spend for a hobby here and there so that cost isn't an issue. Space is certainly haha, where will I put all these?

Should I start getting selective now? Should I skip some sets until they get to ones I like better? How far will they go into producing these? I remember they stated wanting to make Big Brothers. If I had known how many they were making I'd probably have skipped all of the collector pose line.

Also what do I do now about the non-scented rainbow ponies? I'd rather have those since the scented are already breaking down but I can no longer return them, I don't want doubles of this line but the non-scented ones are better.

I want them all. :)
I do wish they had released none scented rainbows to begin with, but they didn't. I am going to have look for those now because the scented ones bug me, especially Starshine. While it is a chunk of change to rebuy them, in the long run I think I am going to be happier with them not smelling as they are strong when I open up the cabinet I have them in. I figure I can either let my niece play with the scented ones when she comes to our house, or I can set them out in other places in the house.

I already have the originals of what has been released so far, but I'm still buying most of the remakes. I can't resist! The novelty of buying sparkling new G1s from the store (and opening some) is too much for me! I know they're not "real" but to me they're so close that it doesn't matter. They're beautiful!

There are a few I think I've decided to skip - so far that would be Starshine and Skydancer, because I've never cared much for them. I might also skip Firefly and Medley, though I do like them both. Particularly Firefly, since I've always thought her color was a weird, ugly shade of pinkish and the new one is a nice color. Might also skip Trickles and Confetti because they're also sort of meh to me, but I don't own either one of them so I won't hold it against myself if I cave and buy them when I see them in person lol.

There are a couple I have gotten 2 of so that I can open some and still have a nice MIB, but I don't plan to do that with all of them (mostly because of cost and space haha).

They are so beautiful: especially the newest wave. I would love to buy them in store and open them and enjoy that new pony goodness. But we do not have them in SA now that the Cotton On ponies are finished. But at least we did get those 4.

Yay! duplicates

I like to have extra, and variants, and damaged differently, one to keep nice and one to hold or carry around...

I can't be trusted to get rid of extras either.

Collecting every pony?  Um, nah...that seems so daunting, there are so many, and then from other countries...i do love finding a pony i know but in another pose from another country that's not much to buy.  Or in different colors.

They’re real enough for me and I like having them minty.  I haven’t bought the first releases in years and I don’t have anywhere close to all the ponies on my childhood wish list.   So, I find it a fun way to “complete” my collection.

It would be fun if they made UK and other European releases.  I was so excited to see that there was a baby Applejack and Bow Tie.  But I’ve never won a bid and kind of gave up.  I think other casual collectors would love them too.

So I guess, technically I’m not buying the same characters twice unless I want to take one out of the box... because I don’t have the original releases.

Hmm depends!

I especially want to get a pristine Moondancer, Glory, Confetti and Pinwheel and may splurge out on doubles of those, if I see any in-store!

Also - if the new BowTie is really as dark a blue as claimed, it may tempt me to have a duplicate, but, I am supposed to be moving house this year so must keep control of pony purchases!  :hope:

I generally don't buy duplicates for storage reasons. Unless there is something really special to about the packaging design, I prefer loose, second-hand ponies. I did buy one 35th Anniversary Cotton Candy - mostly for contrast with my original flatfoot, to mark the anniversary, and because I oddly found her in the French Canadian packaging at a local toy shop. I'm keeping her MIB for display reasons, it's easy to stand something else on top of her!

Although I like the idea of the scented ponies, I realize that they can't possibly smell like the original ones did, Therefore I can't imagine myself buying any of the others. I think it would take something like Oakley (who I think is v cool and hft , but not worth the price right now) for me to buy another BF re-release.
