Title: Mystery G4 Pony
Post by: Ren-Ren on September 28, 2018, 08:20:10 PM
I was going through my pony boxes just now and found a pony that I can't remember very well. She doesn't appear to be in the mlp merch database and I thiiiink she might have been a "prototype" that I picked up through Tao Bao back in the days when I was more active here. She basically looks like Trixie but her cutie mark Fluttershy's. Does she have an entry in a database anywhere?

Yeah that would definitely be a prototype, prototypes aren't added to most databases as far as I know.

That's "Holly Blue"/"Trixieshy"! She's one of the Taobao oddballs that used to be all over the place, for some reason there are hybrid versions of that whole set. I don't think MLPMerch lists prototypes/oddballs/etc so that's prolly why you can't find her :)

AHA! Holly Blue rings a bell XD Thanks you two!

Thought I had already sold off all the rare G4s from my collection, then I stumbled upon a box that had a bunch more in it, including her, heh. It's a bit embarrassing to not recognize some of them : >_<

Early G4 was rampant with the 'mash-ups' - just be aware they're not actually prototypes.  Prototype implies test pieces requested by the designers or one-offs made for promotional material, while these are grey-market 'extras' sold directly from the factory without Hasbro's permission.  Don't think we have a proper accepted term for these ponies yet, unfortunately.

Wouldn't those be called misprints or errors?

If they;re a mishmash, hybrid would work?

We used that in the Jem community for dolls which were essentially mexican bodied but with Chinese heads, so I think that works here too...;)

I've been calling them "oddballs" or "hybrids". Either seem appropriate to me.

Is my memory really bad. Wasn't this particular pony picked up as a pony con mascot when they couldn't get muffin?

So this is like a new thread topic. ^^;

But I call these things taobao ponies, since that's where a majority of them surfaced especially in the beginning... I like the word hybrid, but I don't think it covers all bases for what pops up.

I don't remember if she was a replacement for Ditzy (what year was she?) but yes Holly Blue was the Ponycon exclusive in 2012 :) Ponycon gave her that name as well, as "Holly Blue" are a type of butterflies native to England :)

No, because they were not made by accident.  A true error or misprint isn't intentional, and all the TaoBao ponies were made for direct-to-collectors sale.  The Chinese factories realized they could make lots of money by doing this, so they did.

They are Franken-ponies, I thought we called them?
