Title: Funny or awful ways your ponies have been shipped
Post by: 01mlplover on August 23, 2017, 12:44:36 PM
I've received my fair share of awfully packaged ponies and wanted to share the one i received today and thought it would be interesting to see other peoples arrivals

Heres the one i received today. Her packaging was fine but when i took her out, it was as if she was saying "get me out of here!"

I once had a UK green waterfall playset shipped to me from overseas.  It was wrapped in a black trashbag and lots of tape.   No box.  Not even bubble wrap or paper.  Just a black trash bag.    Consequently, the bottle of bubbles broke and got the whole thing soapy and sticky.

I've gotten things shipped in cereal boxes and other food boxes before.  Someone just within the last year had something shipped to them in a USED pizza box.

An awful way a pony was shipped to me was:  MIB Diamond Dreams had the top of her box flap BENT down to fit in box!  Gee, thanks!  I pay for a MIB product and you purposefully damage the box!

Trash bags and pizza boxes and purposely damaging MiB products?  :pout: I sure hope you guys gave those sellers an earful Ashlyn and Gator.

Dunno if this counts, but I had a pony come to me that was wrapped up so much, it was like watching a butterfly emerge from it's cocoon trying to slowly squeeze and cut her out. XD

I think I've seen my fair share of cereal boxes and lots of walmart bags as packing materials. Not pony, but I did have a white plastic item wrapped in newspaper (very unhappy).

I've also had so many that were packing taped around bubble wrap so much that I was worried I would cut my ponies hair off

A mail order Stockings packed in a sandwich bag.  That wasn't a problem but the grocery bag she was wrapped in first was - the red ink transferred over to her formerly pristine white body.  -_-

Poor pony. She looks very happy to have been unwrapped and set free.

I bought some petite pony houses and accessories from Ebay  and the seller threw everything in to a plastic bag and put it in a box. Luckily nothing  was broken.

This year I had some G3s arrive in a cardboard biscuit box :P
They came from overseas too, so the writing on the box was in Hungarian, haha!

My best one is probably the MOC ponies (?!) which were posted to me in a box which was also full of plush toys. These were not in the auction and the only type of packaging material included, but they were not fastened down and everything was just loose in the box. Fortunately the MOC pony I wanted arrived in the same state the auction advertised. I asked the seller if the plushes got in there by accident but apparently they weren't. I donated them to charity, so hopefully some kid is getting fun out of them now - they were Winnie the Pooh plushes, piglet and so on...

lol, amazing things you all named! :D

Funniest I had was an empty yoghurt box with a custom pony inside.
And my showstable with box... the box itself was used and taped with brown tape all over. Nothing inside but the loose stable pieces.
Oh and a MOC cut in shape to make it fit in the box (this one... (http://einhornbaby.contract-killers.de/ovps/d_pfefferminzi.jpg)).

lmao stuffed animals as packing material. I can laugh since it turned out okay, lord.  :|

The one that still bothers me most is when I bought a brand new 80s shoebox with MLP kids sneakers. It was so perfect it looked like you just pulled it off the shelf in the shoe store, box and all, just brand new, pristine.

They sent the shoe box wrapped in a brown paper bag instead of inside another box, so the brand new box got all crushed up. I was so upset. Didn't make them discount the price or leave negative feedback or anything but I did let them know I was upset. They weren't collectors so I can see in retrospect how they wouldn't think someone would want the shoe box I guess, that they'd only want the shoes, but yep, sure did.

I'm a MOC collector and thankfully I've been fortunate there to not have any horror stories.

Wasn't a pony but my Princess Gwenevere stuff came in a HUGE toilet paper box. So many laughs at the post office...

I've also had the diaper box one for MOC G2s. The person who brought me to pick it up was joking around with the "So there something you want to tell us". It was funny.

lol a pizza box from Italy, at least they match xD

I've had a lot of strange packaging experiences when buying from a local online second hand shop. A lot of ponies arrived just thrown into a plastic bag and they were so tight inside it, their ears and unicorns' horns had poked holes into the bag, it looked as if they all were trying to get out.

Also my Good Morning Sunshine came in a literal gift bag. It was closed with a tape but the bag even had holes that the seller had tried to tape up. Luckily the pony had no damage.

Once I got several G4 Ponies from the UK in a box from a ceramic decoration (of a carousel horse, interestingly enough), one of the Ponies was Fashion Style sized and I knew she was being shipped without her original package, but the box was so small I didn't realise at first that it was the box for that package

And not funny or awful but I did get a box with drawings on the side once

I've sent some stuff in one of the paper towel boxes from work, only because it was fragile so I made sure it was as securely packed, and those boxes are EXTREMELY sturdy so I knew the boxes wouldn't get ruined in the mail.

I had something mailed to me in a tea box once. I had regular diaper boxes though those are very sturdy. Not a problem. I mail ponies in cat litter boxes because I know they are sturdy and great to reuse to ship.

I had the same thing happen to me, the box was pretty greasy -_-

Ponies wrapped in newspaper or coloured tissue always ends badly -_- thankfully the stains weren't too deep so I was able to remove them.

I'm surprised how popular cereal boxes seem to be. I only had ponies arrive in one of those once, and I was worried they'd be damaged, but all was well.

Non-pony, but I used to work for a company that sells pet food, accessories etc, and more than once, customers would return bags of food not in a box, but simply with the return address scribbled on the bag! Naturally, the customers didn't receive a refund, as the bags couldn't be resold in that condition. Imagine if someone did that with a MIB pony...

Oh, wow, some of these stories! . . . I had a MOC Honeycomb shipped to me (for a friend in another country) in a box too small . . . a common story with the expected sad abusive post office ending. :/

Other than that, when I ship ponies myself, I might err too much on the side of over-wrapping a pony, at least a so-soft or a winger, or anything fragile-looking. In the past especially I'd obsess. I try to keep common sense in view, though!

Now this thread has been revived, I have another one which was not pony but it was quite odd.

It was when I was living in Japan and I'd bought something small - a book or a PSP game or something like that - from Amazon to be shipped to my Kyoto address. So I expect it to be tiny and fit in my mail slot as others had before.

...Nope. I get a mail left at the depot card. (By the way, dealing with those in Japan is annoying O.o.)

So after I got back from wherever I'd been researching that day, I went to pick it up at the big PO at Kyoto station, thinking it'd be small enough to fit in my bag and I could go get food and then get the bus home.

...It was a very big box. It was a box big enough to fit in three fashion style ponies MIB and still have space. It was a big enough box that I used it to ship home a whole load of my stuff before I moved back to London.

I had to carry that very big box all around the very busy department store chika trying to buy food...at rush hour...and THEN on the bus...at rush hour. And if you've never been on a Japanese bus, they're like regular single decker buses, BUT NARROWER. And they get very full at rush hour.

That was...interesting. Weird. But interesting.

Not pony but still worth sharing?

I have had some fantastic shippers over the years  :pout:

First was a huge lot of about 30 ponies, g1, 3 and 4. They were sent in an open bin bag with a bit of tape and poor fluttershy never arrived  I hope someone took her home for their kid (or themselves haha) at least it wasn't one of the g3s. The worst thing is that I found out (after they'd been posted) that the seller was less than 30 mins away, so we could've rescued poor flutters ;(

Second I got some delightfully soggy g1s. It seemed they'd had a bath and then been sent straight away, so they had of dry out all day. Luckily they aren't rusty.

Not exactly a shipping method but I bought some g3s and when I opened the package the smell of mould filled the room  one of the ponies actually had mould growing on her too :X they still stink now :(

By far the strangest has to be a rainbow dash that I won. She was in a cylindrical container, wrapped in paper. Imagine my surprise when I saw the phrase "Aah Bisto" on it (it's a gravy brand). The worst part was that there were still granules inside, and no packaging around her, so she had meaty granules mashed into her hair and already rusted tail

I tend to buy from well-received eBay sellers who seem to know how to ship well, but the weirdest I ever got was a lot of G1 ponies wrapped in newspaper and stuck in a box for wine? Wine glasses? Something like that. I'm amazed the thin cardboard was able to make it to me without any incident.
All the ponies were out in the cold for about two hours, so they were very cold when they came in. It took them a few hours to get back to nice room temperature squishy.
Sunsparkle, molded ponies sounds nasty. And the meaty chunks in the hair... :yikes:

I just recently got the G3 Surf Shop and a couple ponies were included. The seller had placed tape in their hair to keep it in place. Garden Wishes had a yellow residue from the tape all over her leg. Not to mention the Skywishes that came was a different variant than the image showed and she had bite marks on her leg.

I was waiting for a Little Pretty to arrive, and I was VERY surprised when I received a box about the size of a standard Kleenex box, which said 'Star Wars Trivia Box', and had printed images of the SW characters all over it! I was afraid I received the wrong mail, but nope - my kitty was inside! ;) I also had another mini heart attack, because when I opened her I saw the dreaded NEWSPAPER! :faint: but she was safely protected in a layer of bubblewrap, phew!

I think most of my other shipping complaints are standard, since I think everyone has dealt with the 'received a massive box with loose ponies rattling around inside' issue. :P Sometimes with the added bonus 'also you got charged enough that they should have arrived to you pulled in a carriage by four white horses'! :lmao:

I am amazed that got through customs without being opened and tampered with. They're really hot at our borders about guns and ammunition and stuff like that because it's so tightly controlled and if the box says it's cartridges then you know they're going to want to check. Especially if it was jewellery in sizes that might look dodgy on the scanner...

It might be a cultural thing - many people in the UK use re-cycled packaging and have done for generations.
As long as the item is carefully packaged within I don't think many people mind - it's often quite amusing to see the mismatch between the original use of the box and it's subsequent re-purposing.

I think it's a global one. I have had recycled boxes from all over the world which I have then reused to send things to other places, probably confusing the buyer in the process xD I currently have a really pretty German box in which I received some wingers and stuff and it has my postage stuff in it. I also love when I get ponies packaged in foreign shopping bags because it's like an unexpected souvenir, which I then send on to the next location ;)

Part of the fun of dealing with the world is that you get unexpected glimpses into the world at the same time as getting ponies :D

I shouldn't really be shocked. I mean, where I live back home, they go shooting birds in the forest/game land that lies beyond the edge of our community, but I guess I just don't think about it so much in the UK.

Omg, nope... nope... nope

I haven't anything close to that!
But I've had a pony that had been washed before shipping. So the seller put her in a plastic bag and then in the box, without waiting for it to dry first.
So, I got a icky pony in the mail xD

Tsk, customs screening isnt what it used to be. Illegal immigrants all over the shop ;) XD XD XD

That is truly gross. Also very odd given that there's not much for a maggot to eat on a plastic pony.

I mainly use plastic bags as packing for my ebay sales, I certainly use tv dinner boxes wrapped in tape together when I run short on regular cardboard to add for extra stability on some items. I can only image the trouble for anyone who has bought lots of ponies from me unwrapping everything  Each pony wrapped in paper towel and in a plastic ziploc, then into the box with shopping bags!

I use grocery bags as packing materials sometimes. They’re lightweight and fit nicely around items. I guess I don’t really consider it strange. I thought the idea was awesome after I got my first package shipped that way. I’m like why did I think of this before!?

Just be careful not to put any printed bags directly in contact with a pony.  The ink can transfer especially when subject to temperature extremes, as often happens when shipping stuff.

I was fascinated!

How did it survive the trip? And there was nothing else off about the pony or envelope. I don't think it came from the seller, but then where? And how? Mysterious!

Part of me wanted to keep it to see what it turned into, honestly

The best way I ever got a pony shipped to me was when I traded a porcelain AJ here on the arena for a Cherries Jubilee and she came perfectly packaged in bubble wrap -and- lots of delischious taffy filled the rest of the box to the brim!

The most awful way a pony ever arrived was in a padded mailer. The mailman had folded it over to shove it in my mailbox. THERE WAS A G1 SPARKLE BABY MOC INSIDE!!!! And the card/bubble had been pretty close to mint before it was folded in half.  I'll never forget that one, and I haven't been able to find a good one for that price since then. Bought it off ebay a few years ago.

Omg! How awful! I bought a rare fashion star filly that just arrived today and she came in a bubble mailer as well. I’ve been getting a lot of those lately and I hold my breath for no broken legs every time I open the package. What made me mad about the one today is I paid $7.50 for priority mail and it came first class at risk of being broken ugh 😑

I bought one of the princess capes (the pink one, I think?) from an ebay seller. It came in a bubble envelope. Which the sender. never. SEALED! Seriously, the white peel-away strip was still on it and everything. I am so grateful the cape didn't fall out of the envelope during transit! That would have been such an "interesting" conversation via messenger! "Dude, why did you send me an unselaed bubble mailer with nothing in it?" "Wait, what?"  :P

The most amusing one I've received was from Nella - complete UK princess Serena with dragon (along with other ponies) - she packed the wand and comb in an empty (clean! plastic!) dip container, with bubble wrap around them so they wouldn't rub/shift on their trip from the Netherlands. The rest of the ponies my sister and I bought from her were each in a bubble-wrap envelope, with more bubble wrap so nopony moved. I seriously want some of those bubble envelopes; the onlys ones I've found here are for CDs and similar. So amused by the dip container, though; I kinda figured what it might be from the veggie pictures on it, but confirmed it with her anyway. It's maybe 3" tall and looks like a miniture sand box bucket with a lid.  ^.^

I had this with a baby sea pony on card sent in a paper envelope (not even bubble mailer) with no packing. Surface mail. From the US. Six weeks later. Yeah. Pony no longer on card. Somehow, card survived. Pony did too. But no longer MOC. So I'm the first and only owner of a beautiful and complete Misty with float, comb, card and ribbon unplayed with...but not a MOC one :( Fortunately I didn't have her loose either at that point, and she hadn't been that expensive, so I dealt with it...but I wasn't very happy. Like you, I still haven't managed to find a decent and inexpensive one in the years since.

Maybe it was the same seller ><

I'm totally okay with sellers repurposing secondhand boxes or even food boxes so long as the fit is appropriate for the contents and the packaging is clean.  Recycling is something I'll always support!

Worst experience was from a few years ago when I ordered a G1 pony from somewhere in the US, and the seller has just wrapped it in a plastic bag and duct taped it around the middle a few times and mailed it looking like complete rubbish.  I looked as though it had been fished out of a dumpster.  Thankfully the pony was unharmed, but it was the laziest packaging job I've ever had.

Alternately I've had some lovely sellers practically gift wrap my ponies for me, so that unboxing them was like having a miniature surprise birthday party for myself.  I always appreciate the sellers who put that extra sweet finishing touch on a parcel, just because they can.  Always nice to meet people who take pride in what they do, even if it's just wrapping a pony!

That has to be the best packaging for a pony ever!  :)  Always am overjoyed when the porcelains arrive safely.  Over the years I've had several tragedies trying to import the large multi-pony porcelains.  Every time a medium sized box was delivered, I braced myself for the sound of tinkling porcelain.  I heard that dreadful sound frequently, alas  :(  I lost THREE Pony Playhouses which were absolutely destroyed, and Twilight got snapped off my Magical Kingdom :(  I have no idea why Pony Playhouse travelled so badly each time, maybe it was a combination of insufficient padding and just plain bad luck.  I always beg the sellers to double box the porcelains and to pad everything twice as securely as they normally would, especially since I'm an international buyer, but even so they haven't always taken my warnings seriously regarding the fragility of these pieces and so they tend to under pad more often than not.  Often it's been a minor miracle that the ponies arrived intact because the padding was quite flimsy several times.  Finally completed the set (bar the Euro exclusives), and I breathed the biggest sign of relief when I realised I didn't have to deal with the anxiety of shipping these fragile beauties any more!  Too stressful :P

I'm always unhappy when I get wet ponies wrapped in newspaper and colored tissue paper. I've had ponies wrapped in paper towels or no packaging material at all. I've been sent cereal boxes and pizza boxes. I've had ponies wrapped in cellophane and duct tape (and had to get their hair unstuck). People have used plastic bags and brown paper. Fortunately, I haven't had any ponies too damaged en route except the wet ones that were wrapped in colored tissue paper and the so softs that had ink transfer from newspaper.

My personal favorite was an Applause plush shipped in a bubble mailer that was *barely* big enough to fit it.  When I went to the apartment office to pick it up, it had burst open at the bottom.  The pony's legs and part of its rear end were hanging out the bottom of the envelope.  The receptionist gave me the package, and as I left the office I could hear everyone laughing:p

I've gotten various food boxes, including frozen dinners, cereal boxes, and a frozen spinach box.

I once got a box of ponies that made it all the way to my house before giving up completely.  I brought it inside, and suddenly the entire box just fell apart in my hands as soon as I closed the door!  I couldn't believe it.  One second, I had a box of ponies in my hands.  The next second I had a pile of cardboard at my feet, and a bunch of ponies in my hands.  I  never realized that they made self-opening boxes!

I had one seller use "The Weekly World News" as padding.  I loved that!

@goddessofpeep - I feel like with that second box the ponies were all getting together inside to charge down the box flaps Revolt of Paradise Estate style. "LET US OUT!" Lucky it happened there and not before.

Also the plush is hilarious...

There's this one ebay seller from Portugal that I buy from sometimes. They always wrap everything so nicely in the box. It seriously does feel like Christmas. Normally tissue paper and a bow inside the shipping bow which is then surrounded by bubble wrap to keep it safe.

It's so nice when that happens.  I recently purchased a minty Molasses from an Etsy store who is officially now my new favourite pony seller.  Not only was the pony beautifully wrapped, but the seller had hand drawn and coloured a gorgeous portrait and name tag for Molasses, which was really detailed and super cute.  Seller had mad drawing skills and really made her store memorable.  It felt like a much more personal gift as though from a friend, not just a random customer purchase.  Totally adorbs, and I kept the tag to use as a bookmark  :)

Reading this reminds me of when I dispersed a bunch of vintage Breyer horses on eBay. My grandmother had passed and we we're trying to get rid of her stuff. She had a collection of wonderfully soft 100% silk scarves...in the most hideous 70s patterns you can imagine! Yup, they were the perfect size to wrap one precious model in to protect its finish from the dreaded packing material shiny marks. Probably should've sold those scarves as thier own lot, but, eh...the buyers definetely got a surprise!

Jammed tightly into a box - deformed ponies, potential smears or rubs.

wrapped in newspaper - yay ink transfer

shipped damp, or with residual water inside- horrible, covered in mildew, stained, steamy. will not describe smell. 0/10

tossed into a box, tiny pieces and all- legitimately, there was one incident where the piece I had really wanted slipped out of the box flap. :( I had hoped it was before it left the sellers house, in the event she found it kicking around. alas, it was not. I kindly let her know we typically secure tiny pieces inside a zipper style freezer/sandwich bag to avoid this.

fragile items in bubble mailers- flutter pony WEARING her original intact wings was shipped to me loose in a padded envelope. I was absolutely shocked those wings survived.

So, poor sellers. Before I drop any kind of cash on major resale sites, I do inquire how the seller packs items for shipping.
Postage insurance does NOT cover being terrible at wrapping/protecting contents.

To be fair these weren't the first run, thin, tiny tabbed wings. I've seen them broken while still sealed in the original package.

They were 2nd edition, with the clear rubbery tabs. They still shouldn't have survived, one heavy item dropped on top and they'd have been toast.

and of course, the auction said something along the lines of "You almost NEVER see the wings with these on ebay! RARE! GREAT for a collector!"
I just love when people want fine auction house prices, while providing yard sale service.

Lover reading this thread, what a stories! Sad some got broken or missing pieces though.

The worst shipping methode I received was also a garbage bag wrapped around with tape for a moc G2.. Luckily she did survive her trip without being damaged. Also many boxes for food, cat food or any other grocery items. But as long as the pony is protected I don't mind :)

And once I ordered moc twins jewel and sparkle from Ebay and added to the package was a really good drawing of them, I loved it! I am always happy when sellers try to make an extra effort :)

For me it was a “smoke free home” where the ponys were arriving from and they arrived wrapped in morrisons bags tied up with tape. Nothing separating them either.

You could smell the stale smoke a mile off. A month they spent on the washing line. (Wind rain or shine smoke smell is my one pet peeve of courseni know now i risked damaging the ponys )Thankfully i think it was more the bags than the ponies that smelt but some of it rubbed off on the plastic

This thread is great  Shame to hear about all the broken or damaged stuff, though :(

Can't think of any interesting pony stories but I've had Sylvanians shipped in cereal bar boxes (100% intact, was very confused until I thought to open it :P) and one shipped in an empty Pukka Pie box X) I think I might have had a pizza box too (or at least part of one) but can't remember for sure..

I donated them to charity, so hopefully some kid is getting fun out of them now - they were Winnie the Pooh plushes, piglet and so on...

 this story is great! Good to hear the MOC was safe.. how odd though XD I mean, what, bubblewrap not good enough? XDD

I haven't had many horrible experiences thank goodness. The worst was plastic shopping bags used as packing. I hate that.
Funniest is this:

Sometimes I think "ugh, it's so awful that we can't ship in our own boxes here in Russia and have to buy special marked boxes at the post office". After reading this theme I'm actually glad we can't. I got some stuff shipped to me in a very used plastic bag when I was buying from Ukraine. The most crazy packaging I got was from USA. It wasn't just a cereal box. It was a whole lot of cereal boxes cut and glued together to make a bigger box!
But my own nation is good at bad packaging too. They usually send ponies in our special post office plastic bags. Well, the Chinese post has bubble wrapping build in thier packaging. Ours don't. Guess what happens. Those who actually care what their buyer receives tend to overdo the packaging. I once bought something like 50 blind bag ponies. The package had EACH ONE OF THEM wrapped in a bubble wrap, tape and a zip lock bag! Oh no, the creativity doesn't end here. I've had a seller who cut a zip lock bag to pieces to make smaller bags.

In a black trash bag, in a bag for bread with bread crumbs in it... I mean, I don't mind recycling, you have a good, sturdy, CLEAN cookie/cereal box, go ahead and use it. But, if the box is too soft, dirty, broken... no.

The bread wrapper with crumbs 🤣 I would never use it but if I did I would make sure all the crumbs are out first.

I've had a few bad packing incidents unfortunately. This is the worse one: I won an amazing lampshade on eBay and immediately starting planning to make an MLP lamp base to proudly display it. Then the shade arrived, crushed like a Coke can. The seller claimed she couldn't find a box big enough so she took two thin sheets of cardboard and placed one under it and one on top. She wrapped the sides with brown butcher paper. The shade was made of cardboard so it would have been crushed before it even left her post office let alone travel from England to Australia. I still have it but it is so badly creased. I've never seen one for sale since.

Just recently I had a rare MLP cake tin with its box arrive damaged. It was sent in a layer of bubble wrap but no box. I don't know how it happened but the box has rips as well as being crushed. Despite being sent through the eBay GSP (the worst thing to ever happen to eBay), eBay wouldn't refund any of it, claiming that I had to get a refund from the seller and that the box wasn't the item itself. I tried to dispute that I paid for both the cake tin and the box as they are both in the listing. Eventually got £5 refunded from the seller.

I once had a MOC Rockin' Beat Half Note sent from another collector in a bubble mailer not a box. Naturally her bubble was cracked and had a hole in it. Thankfully it was very cheap but I'll never be able to fathom how a fellow collector could do that.

I bought a MLP board game and one G1 bundle. Arrived with both wrapped individually in newspaper with the pony taped to the top of the box instead of both being placed in a box. The pony survived but it turns out that the seller neglected to mention that Parasol has her own name written in marker across her butt like a tramp stamp.

As a seller myself, I once sent a pony in a cat food box but drew a speech bubble coming from the cat on the box that read "I promise this isn't cat food!" The buyer thought it was hilarious.

That cracks me up. XD. Seller must be in the medical field or medical supply distribution.
