Title: Who are the "Oldie Moldies"?
Post by: FarDreamer on February 05, 2012, 06:07:00 AM
I'm just curious who's been collecting ponies a long time.  I have been since 1999 (I was 16).  You'd never know it by my post count but I've been aware of the trading post and the arena for as long as they've been around.

There's an awful lot of familiar names that I never see anymore.  The website where I bought my first pony online hasn't been up for years.  :(  Where did everyone go?

About a year or so ago I contacted someone selling a HUGE collection on Craigslist.  She turned out to be a collector that had been around for YEARS and I totally knew who she was when she told me her online name.

This is not an insult to new collectors, I'm just trying to track down all the old familiar "faces".  Where is everyone going?

I'm probably not one you're thinking of, but I started collecting in 2005 so I'm oldER if not pre-2000. :) I've had a turbulent few years with graduating grad school, moving, jobs and job changes, bills...most of my collection is still boxed up now because I'm renovating and don't have display space. I think the economy really threw a lot of people off, plus I was disenchanted with the 3.5s and repetition of the Core 7. I doubt I would have gotten back to collecting if not for the new show.

I have been collecting since 2004 but did not join the online forums until 2009.

I hope you are able to find some of the members you remember, hopefully they are still around and just not active on the boards

There were a lot of "Gusty"s out there, but I was one of them.  I usually went by Gusty the HockeyPony, and sometimes I'd sign my e-mails with <\____~  Lol.  Occasionally I'd write articles for TabbyMLP's monthly e-mail newsletter.  I can't remember if I had the screen name of STLBlues29 back then or if I was still jdkoester.  Haha...oh my, that last screen name is old.
I've been around on line since around 1998.  I usually didn't sell any ponies... I was a buyer :)  Still am!

I've been online for 10 years now as of January :)  I still had a good supply of ponies at a Car Boot sale up until then but when that one closed I had to search for a new marketplace and came online :) I've been collecting since 1987 though :D

Old enough to feel nostalgic about Dream Valley when it was still using illustrations instead of photos for its pony guide: http://web.archive.org/web/20010606093926/http://dreamvalley.freeyellow.com/ponies_list.html

I know I'm probably not one of the people you are looking for since I wasn't as active in the early days, but I would say I've been collecting since 96 (technically i never stopped collecting but that is when I transitioned from a child looking for ponies to a pony collector). I only joined the forums in 2003-4 even though I was a lurker for longer because message boards scared me. The interwebs was still an unknown place for me. :P

Welcome back, I hope you find who you are looking for! :D

I've only been recollecting for about 6.5 years so I wouldn't be technically an oldie. The *trend* I have seen over the years is just that people kind of move on when their life changes. They have kids and need more space so the pony collection shrinks, they move and it's just too much to be carting their collection across the country so they have to downsize, they fall on hard times and since many ponies are a good investment they end up selling to make ends meet, or they just get out of collecting altogether as interests change.

I think that MLP will always hold a special place in the hearts of those who loved them, played with them or collected them even if they can't have a collection or focus on them at a specific time in their life.

I agree with everything you said, but only quoted this smaller part.  ;)

I no longer buy nearly as many ponies as I once did, and I have sold more than I now own.  I *love* the ponies I have kept, and will always enjoy them.  But I have found that I actually enjoy my collection more with fewer numbers.   I can have a collection of favorites and childhood ponies without taking up so much room that I don't get to enjoy what I have.  <3

I still buy a few ponies, but I mostly just like what I have.  I may end up selling more, I may someday just have a handful.  But I will always have my joy of the MLPs in my heart.  :)

I was just a teen when I started but I was on ponypeople as Northy. I stopped collecting for awhile after lack of money.  I never was allowed to buy/trade/sell or put my last name on the internet when I was a teen so I wasn't very "known."

I technically started collecting in 1997 when I was about 5.   :P  I saw my G2s as collectables as well as toys, so it's ironic that they all got thrown out later on.  D:
I discovered the online community around 2003, & fell in love with G1s & G3s, although I didn't start buying ponies again until 2009. I was a lurker here for many years before joining.  xD

I've never really not collected ponies, although I guess I started to consider myself a collector in the late 90s, around age 12, when I started finding lots at yard sales, thrift stores, flea markets, etc.

However, I had no idea the Arena existed or that there were so many other MLP fans until late 2009 when a friend directed me here. So...old to collecting, new to the fan community.

I used to be on the MLPTP in 1999 as HeadlessPony.

I was 13 then, but I wasn't able to join the festivities due to my age and my parents lack of consent. So I got frustrated and left.

Recently started actively collecting again because of FIM.

Wow, Foxtale, you sound a lot like me back in my early days of discovering the MLP community online.   I was new to the internet in general, and terrified of the idea of message boards.   So when I looked up My Little Ponies and found other collectors, I lurked for a very long time.   Probably started somewhere around '95 or '96.   I know it was a bit before the G2s came out, I watched while the community exploded over them.  :(

The most I did before I finally worked up the nerve to join (a little after the G3s came out, I joined Pony Finders) was buy a few ponies from Prancetron.   I would look at a lot of other seller's websites, but just never bought anything.

I remember when the Arena was born!   I can't recall if I was linked to it by someone on Pony Finders, or if I just stumbled across it.   I shrugged the new website off... what did I need with two message boards?! XD

Let me just say, it was rather awkward "knowing" who most people were, and them not having a clue who I was. :lookround:

As for where all those people are going, I know for a while I sort of lost interest in collecting ponies.   I still loved them, I just couldn't afford them, and so many real life obligations were eating into my internet time.   Plus with internet pony friends disappearing, and me finding new internet distractions, the Arena sort of got lost in it all.
I still can't really afford ponies, have rl things cutting into my internet time, and more places I pop into on the net, but I am getting better able to handle all of it.  With the new ponies, and the new Arena, I have found myself being pulled back in.

Edit:  HAHA, Spike!   I had vague memories of Dream Valley with brochure images instead of photos, but I had decided I dreamed it up.   My brain is funny like that sometimes.   It's kind of like when rotary phones were phased out for Touch-Tone.   It seemed like one day we had a rotary, the next a Touch-Tone, and my brain eventually just decided I had been mistaken about ever having a rotary phone.

I've really been collecting since the very beginning, though I just returned about a year and a half ago after an 8 yr break due to lack of funds (which I still don't have, but I'm pretending that I do).  I knew about the online community in the Arena and TP back when they were new, but didn't participate; I dunno why, guess it was just my dislike for computers.  Didn't buy much from ebay back then either; too expensive.  But my friend did make a trade page for me called "Pony Feathers," and I did a decent amount of trading with other collectors whose trade pages I found online.  I remember the Ring of Rainbows and Dream Valley when it used brochure images.

Edit:  That means that I've been collecting for 29 years, since 1983.  My first pony was Peachy w/ Pretty Parlor (for Christmas when I was 6), followed by Blossom.  I think my username pegs me as an "oldie but goodie" too, ha ha!

I've been part of the online collecting community since 1997, so that's . . . wow, 15 years?!

I remember when Dream Valley, Dream Castle, and the Trading Post were the only major sites around . . . Everything else was small personal websites.

I don't really buy ponies any more, but I still enjoy being part of the community.  One of the things that really makes me happy about FIM (aside from how good the show is) is that people seem to be writing fanfics again.  I remember when EVERYONE seemed to be working on a little story (or an epic story!) of their own in "the early days" and was very sad to see that get superceded.

Oh geez...  *totters out onto the porch with a  sparkly rainbow cane*

I admit the first thing I did when I got an Ebay account in 1998 was buy ponies.  :D  So that makes 15 years of online collecting.  Previous to that, it was 11 years of garage and yard sales, consignment shops, and thrift store hunting...  So collecting for 26 years now!

I have been around some form of online collectors' community since before the MLPTP's second move, I do know that.  :)  Some Yahoo Groups, stuff like that...  It took me awhile to join and post with a MLP screenname at places like the Arena and start sharing.

since freshman year of high school when I was 14 circa 1999. Only the my little pony trading post existed then but it was really fun to look for ponies
I never had growing up or ponies I had lost. I then started to collect nirvanas once I realized other ponies had been made in other countries. It
was hard back then. I thought $65 for a pony was a crap load of money haha.. as a high schooler it sure was. But now those ponies are worth
crazy amounts. Glad I got some of them when I did. I think Ill be moving away from avidly collecting as I have been for the past few years.
Time to go on autopilot and enjoy the new finds everyone else brings to the table.. :)

Totally wish I could have been around for the G2 explosion. But I would have been around 7...back then I think I only barely knew how to play games on dos. lol. The internet probably would have been too much for me to handle. XP

Speaking of Nirvanas, I remember when the Spanish Piggy ponies first started showing up on Ebay, usually in fakie lots!   Still kick myself for not bidding on any of those lots, I thought they were so cute, even if everyone else was certain they were fake.   Now I can't find piggies for those low prices!

Yeh Nightwing. I got the first ever greek baby peachy ever sold on ebay for $40 because everyone on the tp thought she was a fakie. I knew she wasn't - don't know how but I just did. And around 6 mths later greek babies started to show up in their boxes and they became official :)
Spanish piggies are just the most adorable for sure. I remember when there was all this speculation around them too.. So crazy what we didn't know back then.

Yes!  The online auctions drove me nuts.  I think it was mountain boys that would pop up in the yahoo auctions and sell really cheap.  It might have been the BB's, something male.  My mom wouldn't let me bid on auctions because she didn't think using credit cards online was safe.  I could only buy directly from other collectors who would accept cash or personal checks.  There was a time when it was common to mail cash or checks for ponies!!!  She put the fear of God into me.  It took me forever to try PayPal thanks to all the paranoia.

I've been collecting as an adult since about 2004 and found both the TP and the Arena around 2005. So I've been around for some time now. My collecting has tapered off mostly because of financial issues, but I still add to my collection when I have some extra funds. :)  I actually just moved and am in the middle of re-displaying my ponies.

I was into ponies, but I wasn't as aware of how much fun the fandom was - I think what originally got me to join was an art contest (I wanted to win a pony!!), and I got more addicted as time went on! :P

I suppose I am an old timer who has disappeared...  And I have done so off and on throughout my collecting time, but that's bound to happen when you collect for this long, right?  I've been collecting for as long as I've had an eBay account as an adult (so since 1998 I think) but I still had my childhood collection at that point :).  Now I don't do near as much collecting because I have a six year old who thinks it is only fair that if I get something, so should she...and damn, that gets expensive!

Known as Diamond Dreams for fourteen years now!

My first ponies were Moondancer and Firefly. My mom bought them for me new and she allowed me to have two because I couldn't really decide which 'one' I wanted so she told me to pick two; at least that's the way I remember it. I have a feeling I was probably just standing there staring at the beautiful unicorns and pegasus and I'm positive my thought was I must have them all.

I'm making the assumption that I started collecting in 1983 but I guess it depends on when Moondancer and Firefly were officially first in stores.

I don't remember being interested in the original ponies (blue Belle, Butterscotch, etc.) or taking notice of them and I'm assuming again that they were released in 1982 - the Uni's and Pegs is what got me started. But all of this would be based on what was actually out when. I just know when I first saw the Uni and Peg that was when I got them so they must have just been released.

I've been a faithful collector since Moondancer and Firefly, so that puts me at 29 years.

edit: I think I've been in the online pony collecting community since 1996/7.

I've only been a member  of the community since 2005, but I've been re-collecting since about 2000 - when I joined ebay to pick up some lost childhood ponies.    I say re-collecting, because I collected ponies since I was 5-years old, but put them in storage while I "grew up". Then, once I did grow up, I started collecting again :)

I knew about the pony community a year or two earlier than I joined, but I was too shy to sign up officially.  Silly me!

I've loved ponies since before I can even rememeber lol! I suppose they were being bought for me before I even learned to speak.

Anyway with online been collecting I've done it since since about 2001 with an ebay account I made to find childhood videos. Only pony I bought at that time was my fabled childhood grail windwhistler though haha (it still counts!) I remember using Dream Valley to learn more about ponies - and to put names to some of my own! (Ahhh, so this one is called 'Twinkler') I remember being aware of the mlptp but just occasional lurking. I then went through periods of being interested/not-interested. I didn't really join online forums about mlp till later on.

(But I can completely understand what you mean about 'oldies'. I have accounts for neopets, elfwood, and ffnet that all began in 2000-2001 0_0.... Sometimes I look around and think 'whatever happened to this person, and that person, where are they now??')

I signed up on ebay in December '97 & my first purchase was Baby Glory, so I guess that makes 14 years of online pony collecting for me. Sometime around then, I joined the "ponypeople" email group. I collected via ebay & ponypeople back in those days. I never signed up on the original TP because I thought message boards were too overwhelming (haha!). Sometime in the early 2000's (2002 or 2003?), my parents deleted their original AOL account & I started my own AOL account under the name kitkatvintage.

Well, I'd like to say I've been a collector since the 80's. I just had my childhood herd  for the longest time. When I moved out here to UT, my dad found a couple of G1s at a thrift store and it sparked my desire again. So I was an eBay/yahoo auction bidder for a while. I used to pour over the Dream Valley site!
I'm not sure where I ended  up first, but I know I was on the old TP for a bit, then Pony Finders (signed up there in 2004, and I'm still there), and eventually I came over here, though I didn't actually register till 2007. I think I've pretty much stuck with "sweetstuff" the whole time

I'm not the most talkative pony obviously *lol*

I remember when Nirvanna's first started showing up. I remember when UK ponies started showing up! Baby Buttons went for a crazy price! And I remember when Piggys were "Fakies" and The mass flood of Greeks on Ebay.

I remember Yahoo Auctions, and The Ponypeople Emailing List. Dreamvalley chats? Ivy's chats, and the catfight board.

I remember when Dream Valley had Argie Flutterbye listed as pretty bow.

The TP was black and hot pink, I used to go to the library every day to go online and look at it and print pictures of the back cards from Dream Valley. Spike That link you posted to the old Dreamvalley is AMAZING! Can anyone do it to the old TP? LOL

I remember the early-mid nighties when MLP and Friends was still on the Disney Channel and occasionally they would play the movie. I remember renting Firefly's Adventure and Escape from Catrina on VHS at the local video store.

I remember people were finding old stock of the MLP kitchen at their TRU's after MLP had long gone from the store shelfs. And people were finding MOC Sparkle Babies at White Elephant stores.

I remember when everyone thought MOC Mimic would never exists lol.

I remember when G2's came out and everyone hated them! It divided the boards like crazy and anyone mentioning them would get flamed like crazy!

Oh those were the days....

Oldie Moldies?
I don't think I like that name...
I never really stopped collecting ponies..
I started buying them second hand and calling it a collection when I was in High School umm back in 1993. I've been part of the Online pony community since 1997 or may have been late 1996 - boy was the internet different back then.

Lets see stroll down memory lane...
Dream Valley had a chat room.
Dream Castle was the Go-To message boards
MLP lots on eBay with very fuzzy or no pictures.. yet we still bought them

Members that I remember
The Delaneys - who can forget them
Steamer
Baby LicketySplit
Tabby - She had an awesome newsletter
Buckbuddy/Tarpan - her site is still around somewhere - she hosted my first trade/sale list
Summerwing!!
High Queen Tiffany - I really miss her fanficition..

I remember finding old MLP Coloring books in Wal-Mart's Clearance Section
I remember when I bought Baby Princess Sparkle for $15 MIB off of eBay - there were about 10 of them listed!

I remember when you could find MOC ponies online for around $15  a piece - wish I had more money back then.... I only bought four of them.

I remember going to the flea market and every week coming home with about 20-30 ponies all for $1 a piece...

I starting buying ponies on eBay in 2002 before the G3s hit the stores. I remember buying G2s in the store, but I wasn't crazy about them at the time. I joined the Arena in 2007 and it's been one endless party since then! :P

I remember that. I think the comm was such a small place and there were no actual forums as such to begin with - Trading Post was still black and pink and you had to email Jenn to get your ads put up - main communication were the mailing lists like Ponypeople and dreamvalley...people devoted more time to imagination around the ponies rather than monetary value. Scammers existed, but they were in small number and members of the community used to police them - the idea of scamming was far more shocking somehow then than it is now, with the community so widespread (sad ><). Locket ran the bad trader's list, I believe..?

It was also a time when people were still discovering a lot of stuff about ponies that now collectors take for granted. Things like different poses for confetti, sea ponies, etc, even the existence of the Mountain Boys - I remember having a conversation with a collector in the US about Snowflake and her saying..."who?"

A time when people still talked mostly on ICQ, too...and where you "registered" your pony name...a time pre-Arena...a time pre-MOC Mimic, as someone said above xDD.

That said, it was also a time when DV had a lot of mistakes due to misinformation, which made life a little more complicated when trading from across the atlantic. There were so few UK and European people online, then, too, that pony collecting was very US-centric. This was good for us for getting US ponies, but I guess it was harder for the US people trying to track down UK and European ones. I saw my first Argentine and Brazilian ponies in 1999, but online at that time the only variations which were beginning to be explored were the Italian ponies.

I've been collecting MLP since I was 2, which means 28 years a week tomorrow. My first pony was Rainbow pony Windy, who lives on my television set =D. I've been online since 1997, though that was from a library PC. I did my first online trade in 1997, though, so to me that's when I started. I was online from home in 1998, at which point I was 16. I adopted the name Taffeta when all the "popular" pony names were taken, even though I'd never even seen her or heard of her till I got online, and somehow it stuck...so I've never changed it.

To who it was who asked - I'm semi-still around ;) I pop on here and post from time to time, but as you can see from my pc, not that regularly. More around on MSN and email than on the site as a rule. I've been to a few of the pony meets over here, including the last two. And I still have my collection. Am currently back at uni doing a Postgrad, though, so completing the update of the scrapbook site has stalled again for the time being...

I remember a lot of names that have come up both posting on this thread and on other people's posts too =D.

I've been around online, almost on a daily basis, since '06!
I just didn't bother clicking this thread until now, because I thought it was a new member asking what an "oldie moldie" is, with 4 pages of bashing of said name x'D
(then I saw the author name and recognized it)

I remember Aikarin and her custom website! It's what got me into making customs.
I also remember when Hasbro was on her for selling her ponies in customized MLP boxes.

I also used to go to the library and look at g3mlp.com. I miss that site, even though I'm not really a g3 collector. I was just a bit afraid back then that collecting g1s would be too hard!

Although I registered less than a year ago, I came her about 2 years ago now and I was to young to make an account.. I was gonna fake my age but my older sister caught me!

Been around since 1998 on ponypeople mailing list, alt.toys.my-little-pony, a couple of Yahoo forums, the old Trading Post, and now the Arena. I've gone from a college student, to a married working engineer, and now I'm the mother of two (the younger being only a year old) and my time online has decreased each step of the way. I still love ponies and collect them, but I just don't have the time to dedicate to pony communities any more. I also don't have any local pony friends in Pittsburgh, so it's just me and my kids getting into the hobby, so it's not quite the same. I spend most of my time here on the Nirvana form trying to pick up the last few Moondancers I need (Greek, South African, Argentina) and country ponies (South Africa, Colombia, and Venezuela). But I have fond memories of all of the collectors I've met - in real life or virtually - over the last fourteen or so years of collecting. :)

  I guess I'm a real oldie too.  Dunno about mold, but dust - there's plenty here to go around!  I started collecting when ponies hit stores here in late Dec. of '82.
1995 in university I made my first website called the Berry Patch, and the day that ebay became available was an exciting day (and the paypal free $5.00 sign up program too).  I still recognize many of the older Ids from Ponypalooza and the old boards, but being terribly shy and being in and out of medical tests from time to time means I don't get to post much, but I'm always around.

OMG, the Yahoo alt.toys.my-little-pony group!! I remember that now! Wow, I joined on there ages and ages before I joined the Arena ... but I tried to make some funny post like, "Wow, what's up with this Shrine to Mimic page, huh? Some people sure are loopy!" And EVERYONE GOT BUTTHURT. It's actually the reason I was so hesitant to sign up on the Arena, and lurked for a couple years before I joined - I figured all pony collectors must be nutballs like they were! ;) Very glad to see that isn't the case!

Not me. XD I would have been way too young to join the MLP groups back then anyway. I was 9 years old in 1999. Had my own computer though, built websites, bought beanie babies online (with parent's permission, of course!) but I wasn't big on ponies at the time.

That's what happens with nerdy parents who met on the internet in 1995. XD

I've been a long-time lurker, mostly, I suppose.  Since the mid-90's.  I remember most of what y'all are mentioning.

I still remember how excited I was, in 1999, to turn 18 and finally be able to register/bid on eBay!

I've recently sold off most of my collection, in preparation for a cross-country move/marriage......but I still have quite a few ponies..........(and my fiancé reluctantly agreed to ponies on the wedding cake, so he knows what he's getting into)   :P

I've been known as Sunset or Sunsetgrove.  I had a small website for a while called Sunset Grove but it has gone to the wayside.  I've never been particularly active in the online community though a few people may remember some of my art work.

I've been on a sort of break from collecting.  "Sort of" because while I wasn't very active on-line and at least half of my collection had been packed up, I would still pick up G3 ponies at my local stores.  That is until Hasbro began re-releasing the same ponies over and over again and then came the G3.5 and I completely lost interest.  Then I bought a fixer-uper house in the fall of 2010 and that completely consumed my time.  That is until this summer when I saw the G4 in the stores for the first time and it resparked my interest.  So here I am back again.

Like some have said, MLP will always have a special place in my heart whether I'm actively collecting or not.

Ahhh! Okay, that makes sense. At the time, it was like, "Wow, here is this funny thing I found, let's all have a laugh!" And the response was "OH. MY. GOD. YOU DO NOT MOCK THE SACROSANCT HOLINESS OF THE MOC MIMIC PAGE. WE TAKE THIS PAGE VERY. SERIOUSLY." And I was just like "... okaaaaay time to give up on making any pony friends, THEY HAVE ALL GONE NUTS FROM THE PLASTIC FUMES!" I'm glad the crazy isn't quite so intense, nowadays. :lmao:

Old enough to feel nostalgic about Dream Valley when it was still using illustrations instead of photos for its pony guide: http://web.archive.org/web/20010606093926/http://dreamvalley.freeyellow.com/ponies_list.html (http://web.archive.org/web/20010606093926/http://dreamvalley.freeyellow.com/ponies_list.html)

LOL!  Yes, I was just getting into actual collecting as a teenager at some point in the 90's when I found this site.  I didn't have regular access to the Internet.  In fact, the only way I could get online was for my mom to allow me to use her work computer during her lunch hour when I wasn't in school.  Dream Valley was the biggest MLP resource I could find at the time and so in order to have access whenever I wanted, I talked my mom into letting me print it off.  Yes, the whole thing!  I printed it all out and put it into a three ring binder.  And I had to print in black and white so I went back in and colored in the images!

In fact, I still have it.  I just dug it out.  Here are some pics.

Since I fell out of the pony scene for a few years from about 2004-2011, I'm not sure anyone would even remember me. But I go back way earlier than that! XD

I've been collecting ponies since I was a child who received her first pony (Parasol!) back in MLP's second year. But I wasn't a part of any MLP-collecting groups till about 1996 or 1997, when I got curious about my childhood collection I still had. I wondered if there were others like me out there, "too old" for ponies but still holding onto them dearly. So I put "My Little Pony" into the big search engine of the time (Metacrawler, possibly?), found the old Dream Valley website, and learned that there was an e-mailing list of MLP collectors out there. I was blown away to find so many like minds. :D I was aware of the Trading Post and the Arena ever since they first came about, but it took me many years to join either because I just preferred the e-mailing lists while they lasted.

This was back when the Ponypeople mailing list wasn't hosted on Yahoo! Groups, or even its predecessor eGroups (and I'm not sure if the Dream Valley ML even existed at that point in time, unless I've got it all backwards). This was so long ago that the "mailing list" just consisted of about sixty or seventy email addresses that you had to copy and paste into your email every time you wanted to post to the "list"! I also used to contribute to the My Little Pony Monthly newsletter back then. I think I usually signed my posts as Rainribbon/Linka of Hyrule/Ryo-ohki Cabbit, and of course my current username, with different "first names" attached to it 'cause I've been going by Mystagic since I was about three or four years old. I also posted two Christmas fics about my MLP fan-character Rainribbon (see avatar), and I really wish I could find them again. I'm pretty sure they were posted to the mailing list back before we were hosted on a website, and I've yet to find them archived anywhere. They were lost to a hard drive crash somewhere around the end of the last century. :/

Wow, I'm gettin' kinda misty-eyed reminiscing! And while I may not be remembered because I've been so quiet in recent years, I'm really amazed at the names *I* remember popping up here! Holy carpfish, NORTHY?! :D

Well, I did turn 40 last month, but I haven't seen any mold growth (yet!)...

Oh, wait, you're not talking about age...

I didn't start collecting until the G3's came out.  I saw a few of them in stores, remembered that I had wanted some back in the 80's, and bought a couple of the 2-packs.  Little did I know what that would lead to.

Oh well, at least my husband understands (mostly).

Erm...pardon o.O. How did I get into a discussion on the MOC Mimic?

Sugarberry, you seem to have got your history in a twist.

Icefeather and I fell out because she wanted me to take Italian ponies off my website and I didn't see why I should. I didn't really like the methods she used to try and get me to concede, and that was why we initially fell out, at least as far as I know. She may know different...but it was a long time ago, and honestly, it had such a deep impact on me for various reasons that I'd rather not drag it up again now.

It definitely had nothing to do with the church of the MOC Mimic, though, of that I'm sure. I remember telling her I thought the idea was silly, but I don't remember getting involved in that fight.

The pony hierarchy was pretty imposing if it wanted to be. I'm pretty sure I wasn't a part of it, though...at least, not in an influential sense.

I've collected ponies since the 80's.  Got my first pony in 1982 (or '83).  Came online in 1997 as FluttrPony.  One of my very first online pony purchases was from an old MLP Newsgroup.  Do they even have those anymore?  ^.^ Then joined a Yahoo group for awhile.  bought a ton from eBay.  Joined the Arena back in....gotta go check again I forgot!  and have been off and on collecting ever since.  I too don't try to buy every pony out there.  I just don't have the room  :P .  I'm not fan of the G 3.5 bobblehead ponies so that saved my wallet alot of grief.  Loving MLP:FIM.

Wow, Foxtale, you sound a lot like me back in my early days of discovering the MLP community online.   I was new to the internet in general, and terrified of the idea of message boards.   So when I looked up My Little Ponies and found other collectors, I lurked for a very long time.

It sounds like a lot of people had similiar stories. Glad to know I wasn't alone. :-)

Omg, I remember pony finders, it was the first forum I joined.

I've been around since the original MLPTP, back when Jen owned it. My first screen-name was TAF Seashell. I don't recall when I joined the arena, but it was under demonkitty or kithsidhe - I don't recall which. When I came back I couldn't recall a no longer worked.ny information and the email I used.

I feel like I've been around forever, but I'm not very chatty at all so I know there just aren't that many people that know me.

This is such a fun reunion!

Taffeta! I remember looking up to you so much back in the day haha. I used to think you were some MLP Goddess. :P You still hold that image to me to this day!

I wish Abasca would run this town again! She used to make me laugh so much!

Mystagic When I first came back, I thought everyone had gone! I am also glad to see so many familiar faces!

Mystagic When I first came back, I thought everyone had gone! I am also glad to see so many familiar faces!

Let's drink tea and cider to old familiar faces! That's partly why my avatar is what it is now--it's low-quality and horribly pixelated, but I did it back in the 90s and hoped that anyone who remembered me from back then would still recognize it, and me, here in the now. Eventually I'll get tired of looking at it (I had NO clue how to use paint programs back when I was a teen first getting online!), but for now it gives me too many fond memories of great (pony)people to replace it or repair it. :)

Man, I feel like we need an old-timer's reunion!

Haha Mystagic! That is exactly how I remembered you! Because I used to ALWAYS admire your avatar/persona! I thought the color was striking with the rainbow hair! :D

I still have my old Blinkie that Pinwheel made me back in the day lol!

I agree we should all have tea and a reunion!

Aww, thank you, Mermaid! And OMgosh Pinwheel's Blinkies! You should totally post yours up! I should go try to find the other pictures I did back in the Ponypeople days....I remember I had this goal to draw every single ponysona of the members in the 90s. Of course, it was a lot easier when we only had about sixty members, many of whom didn't have a pony persona at the time. XD A lot of people probably don't even have their old pony identities from way back then, but I actually still use Rainribbon as a fic/roleplaying character to this day. All of my original characters have changed dramatically since I was 16, except for her. There's just something about ponies that makes you want to retain their innocence no matter how much you yourself grow up. :) But I don't think I have to tell you or any of the other members that!

Wow...I just realized...if I was 16 when I got into online pony fandom, and I'm 32 now....I've been part of the online MLP scene for half my life. That's a long time to spend with you wonderful people, and yet it doesn't feel like more than a day has passed. Thank you all for making me part of this wonderful family. =^^=

Jeez, is it really almost 4 AM?! I'd better drag myself off to bed. Good night!

Wow...I just realized...if I was 16 when I got into online pony fandom, and I'm 32 now....I've been part of the online MLP scene for half my life.

I was coming to the same kind of realisation earlier this week - I'm 30 on Thursday, and I made my first forays online at fifteen...that is quite a scary thought ><.

What's really interesting about this thread is the number of people who have changed their name. I know most of the old names of people but wouldn't have realised who they were because of the new ones. Mainly because of ponypeople mailing list perhaps..? Surfstar, I totally remember you as TAF Seashell xD. And Mysteagic, I remember you as Rainribbon too, as well as the Ryou-ouki thing for some reason...maybe because I saw Tenchi Muyou around that time too...hrm.

It's really nice to be remembered, though, especially fondly (rather than as that brat who typed too much, which I think is how most people saw me back then xDD). *gives cookies* =D.

What I loved most about being around at that time was being able to be involved in the "international discovery" of the UK MLPs, which is the same kind of thing the Nirvana experts are involved in doing now. Discovering "new" pony variations, and helping publicise those to the rest of the pony comm was something I was really passionate about doing...that and actually being able to obtain for the first time ponies I'd grown up knowing about but which weren't sold over here. I'd like to think that even if I ranted and was tactless and sometimes did stuff people didn't understand, I did something positive with the UK pony info at least.

I must try and get the rest of the scrapbook fixed up when my course is done, too. Of course, it would help if my webhost hadn't taken down a bunch of the new stuff I added last Sept without warning...sigh...

Incidentally, ponypeople mailing list is still so ingrained into my memory that I still call pony collectors "ponypeople" even now...

I was reading through some of the old stuff I wrote back in 1998 (when I was JDKoester at aol...)... Oh my gosh, I sound so stupid!  LoL  I guess that's what happens when you are barely a teenager and love to write :)  It's fun to laugh at myself though.  Those were good times!

Sugarberry, I still have fond memories of meeting up with you back when my husband and I lived in Santa Clara, California. :)

Eternity

It sure was a real pleasure to meet you and your husband and to see your collection Eternity.  :)  My mother and I met so many sweet friends on that trip out there.  If you ever get up towards Illinois, I'd love for you to come by and let me be the hostess for your visit.

And Taffeta, no twist- and there's much you didn't know about it, and probably more that's been forgotten- which is a good thing.  I just chose not to elaborate on the 3 years of ongoings.  *Many* folks wandered into those boards and got snapped at for their commentary on it, so to explain to her why she got snapped at for the comment on the Mimic thing- well, in the simplest of terms, that's why- as an indirect result from all the flames that happened there. It wasn't all about Italian ponies either, but much of that's better off left in the past.  ;)  If you really want to know, I'll write it out for you in PM.

I remember when the arena was created but there were plenty of people that were "oldbies" even then! I took a break at the end of the g3 line when everything became a core 7 reissue. Don't own a single 3.5 either and don't care to. The FiM stuff is ok but theres just something special about g1s, especially Nirvanas.
You know, I hated the constant g3 reissues but I would have killed for g1 reissues (in alt poses).

PM appreciated and responded to. It clears up some things but not others - and I guess there's stuff you weren't aware of either, so.

As you said, hopefully in the past, though, now...its a long time ago.

Incidentally, I googled, and the MOC Mimic site is still accessible...not sure if I should link to it here xD but if you google, you'll find it.

It's nice to read that a lot of the old hurt feelings are being healed.  :)  I love being a part of the pony community!  I wish that I'd actually participated a lot more back in the day, instead of just lurking around the edges and stalking Ebay.  But Sebby and I were sort of email pen pals; I still have fond memories of our extened online chats.  Ha ha, I used to write her such long marathon emails!  And I still have the card and princess dragon Smokey that she generously sent me as a gift (still my only dragon, besides Spike of course).  We did quite a lot of trades too; I think I got my lovely Gypsy from Sebby; still one of my favorite ponies.

Stlgusty.. Is your birthday August 11? I remember once on ponypeople posting about my birthday and having someone else with a hockey themed name having the same bday.

My favorite ponypeople memory is how I never downloaded the emails from my server and I had so many I almost crashed my ISP.. They were not happy! (this was in the 90s)

I still remember a lot of the old stuff! The ponypeople list, the dreamvalley web ring (and dream valley with the drawn illustrations!! I actually printed the entire site back then. Yep, lol), the old MLPTP, the hatred towards gen2 lol... Good old times (not the gen2 hate ;) )!

Last time I noticed you commenting here, Taffeta, I even wondered, "Is that THE Taffeta from the old days?" but it was such a common pony-name that I didn't want to jump to conclusions. :) So happy you remember me! The confusion over pony names is why I stopped going by Rainribbon....If you use a pony name, eventually other people will use the same one, and I didn't want to cause confusion. Of course, it meant that people who knew me as Rainribbon no longer knew who I was if they weren't present when I made the switch!

And I know what you mean about being VERY different from the old days. I was just a teenager who'd been shut away from general society for so long that joining PonyPeople was pretty much how I learned to be a functional person in social settings (although my severe anxiety disorder still makes things difficult). I feel so sorry for anyone who might've had to deal with me sixteen years ago. XD I don't *remember* doing anything to anger anyone, but the paranoid part of me insists I must've done on a daily basis. :P

And....Katie/Gusty-the HockeyPony?! Holy cow! I remember you too! :D

I guess I'd be considered a moldie oldie, though I don't feel like it! Maybe because a few of my MLP friends have been collecting way longer. I remember going to one meet in about 2005ish, where I was the only one that didn't come from the pre-2000 era! :) I recognise some of the names posted in here - good to see some of them around again!

I came to the online MLP communities in late 2001, first to the UK based ones (because I thought the TP moved so fast and I didn't have much spare time), then the TP a bit later. The Arena I joined the day it opened :) It's a scary thought how long ago that was - 11 years! Collecting now seems very different from back then, partly because of G3/G4, partly because the longer time since G1 and partly because I've refined my collection several times! I kinda miss the magic of the early days when I got excited about ponies like Moondancer or Locket.

I probably don't seem like one, but I really got started in 1996-1997.  I was on the boards then but it was mostly email and stalking the hundreds of sites on the ring of rainbows lol!  I disappeared a bit during high school, but got back on the boards full time in 2004-2005.  I remember going to the delaneys ponypalooza in 1999 with my mom, haha!

What a great thread this is.  It is nice to see that we are still here!  Won't it be awesome to see one of these in another ten years?

Taffeta, I remember when you joined the PonyPeople Mailing List--there was an undercurrent of excitement because, at last, a UK member who might have access to some of those amazing Euro ponies!  I think Sel joined not too long after, or possibly a little before.  I know she was the one who first told me So-Softs were never sold in the UK.

Anyone else remember the eBay seller "esk"?   Not a community member, as far as I know, but one of the first transatlantic major eBay pony sellers.   He'd put reserves of $30 on every non-US pony . . . and got that price every time, for a long while!

I'd forgotten all about esk till you mentioned him. Wow, I remember thinking he must be making a killing off all those ponies with those reserves. Of course, nowadays $30 is a drop in the bucket for what some of our formerly-cheap ponies are fetching!

This is eerily similar to my story! I technically began to collect when I was 12 as well, that's when I began searching for MLP's at stores and markets on my own.  I've always technically collected, MLP's were basically the only toy I would keep from age 3 and up.  Ohohoho I pitied the poor child who brought me a "fakie" at birthdays, I have some rudely disturbing pics of me tossing some in a pool at my fourth birthday...

I only found the online pony community in 2006 and just lurked. Till then...I had NO idea any of you existed... Admittedly it was a emotional discovery for me. I had been hiding my love for ponies my entire life, even had a secret room where they were displayed growing up so friends wouldn't see.  You wouldn't know the username unless you played a lot of fps games growing up, I've kept the same tag since I was about 11. Small world though, when I moved to the state I managed to buy an excellent lot from someone locally who had been collecting their whole life as well, we meet for a drink for the exchange and are still friends :>

I started collecting at the end of 2005. I wasn't the serious collector then, which i now am. I just occasianally bought ponies i thought were beautiful and had no idea of their values. I wanted the G1s back from my youth.

I didn't enter the international cumminity before 2010. I'm now a member here for a year, also at MLPTP, but i'm not much on there.
I díd enter a Dutch forum in 2006, but wasn't around there that much..

Hrm...let's see...I've been an active online member of the pony community since 1997.  I remember when the MLPTP was the hot place to be!  Black page w/magenta lettering...*sigh*  those were the days!  And I remember when the Arena started - I was like - "Why do we need *another* mlp board?  The TP is where it's at!  How can something be more popular than that?"  But I signed up anyway, and low and behold I was very wrong!  The Arena morphed into my new pony home when the TP had all those problems with spam before it moved addresses.  :)

And I remember when Woosie and Nactlight started customizing those gorgeous merponies and pegasi and I was so impressed!  Customizing was very new, and the thought that there would always be more unique ponies coming out was very exciting!

And then there was the release of the G2's and then the G3's...oh I could go on and on!!!

All the drama over the years, the collectors that have come and gone, the new ponies constantly surfacing from countries around the world...it's no wonder I've never left the arena!

I love the pony community!  {{{hugs}}}

OMG I forgot all about the Ring of Rainbows! I could spend hours on that thing! I was a childhood collector, and I took a break to be a teenager and started up again my freshman year of college circa 1996/7. I signed up for eBay so early that my 5 letter first name is my screen name there. That was back before MLP had it's own category and you had to actually search for My Little Pony. I treated Dream Valley like the Bible and looked forward to my ponypeople emails to see what was up for sale.

I have come and gone over the years, but I always keep coming back! I think I have been BabyMedley the whole time, even if I don't say much. I picked it because I like the music notes and the colors, and Medley was already taken. That was before I knew there were actual Baby Medley Nirvanas made (and I have a Nightlight-made custom Baby Medley to fill the void). Oh Nirvana ponies...you will be the death of me.

Anyone remember this? Yeah, this was my pony room at the old house circa 2006:

The first glimmers of my pony collection were around late 1998 / early 1999.  Started with a non working Talk-a-Lot, then a short time later got a really cute Princess Royal Pink with a well done punk mane and tail cut.

My collection really blossomed in April of 1999 when I accidentally sent a post to rec.games.video.classic instead of alt.toys.mi-little-pony...

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.video.classic/browse_thread/thread/7f0b07d5a9e141d3/8ecb9c053cb2d91?hl=en&q=baby+ponies+found+%2Botter#08ecb9c053cb2d91

That was one of my best misposts ever.  Because of that, another regular on rec.games.video.classic bought up a bunch of ponies real cheap at his various thrift stores and offered them to me equally cheap (cost plus shipping)

I'll have to see if I can dig up the post about that later.  I did do a little more searching, and apparently that big lot I got cheap had a Peruvian Pony in it that I resold for around $60 back then.

Hee hee. Big likes for this thread!

I considered myself a kinda new collector but I guess I could as an old one now. ^^;; I had childhood MLP toys (still do!) but I started collecting as a collector in 2003, with the reintroduction of the G3's. I soon found the MLPArean and MLPTP when I started googling pony names to find out which G3's I didn't have. I didn't trust the little inserts! lol.

I stopped coming by the Arena and the TP in 2009 when the "G3 Core 7" were introduced. I was totally not impressed with Hasbro for that move, and not willing to give them more of my money, so I kinda fell out of collecting and stopped coming by.

But with FiM inspiring a bunch of great toys for us again, I'm back! It's great to see old and new faces!

I have been collecting since before the g3 were made and I took a break from collecting late in 2009 . I have only restarted collecting this past year...the obession has returned. I found most of my g1 .       I'm currently working on completing my ponies since I didn't collect for two years. I blame the g4 for my renewed loved in ponies again.  I have g4,g3,and g1,and just a couple g2. I post on Arena and pony finders too. I love hunting for ponies second and will be looking to unload lots of g3 and g1 soon. I went to the Las Vegas pony Fair in 2009. I had a booth where I gave g3 ponies away. Before I stopped collecting I held 3 raffles (one here, one on Pony Finders, and one on MLTP) . I have met a few collectors and that is really cool. I love meeting collectors from the boards. I love of kind and sweet pony people are and that is what makes the pony boards so fun to be apart. I love the friends I have been able to make on the boards and how we can help each other out with our collection and just be there for each other.

Also: *waves to Mystagic* Hey old friend! X3

Hallo! Looks like I've got some PM replies to get to. :D

I sorta fell out of collecting with G3 myself and ended up donating most of my G3 collection (most still MIB) to the children's hospital. I never liked the designs as much as G1, and eventually got fed up with Hasbro's incessant milking and recycling and quit. With what Hasbro's doing with the G4 line and releasing wave after wave of blind bag ponies in the same molds every time, I might drop out of G4 collecting too! (Though I'm mostly collecting on behalf of others, at least, so it's not like I have to spend my own money all the time! But it also means I'm not the one getting all the ponies. XD )

Great thread!  I have been recollecting since 1998.  I remember being completely surprised that there was an online MLP presence at all.  And delighted--I could now get the childhood ponies and accessories I'd always wanted but never got the first time around!

I got on MLPTP around 1999 (with this user name) and joined the Arena a few years later.  I remember all the upset over G2s, etc., but I've always been very peripheral in the MLP online community so I just observed:)  Things seem much calmer and friendlier now.  Of course now we've had 15 years to accept that Hasbro would do something different w/ MLP than G1 . . . :)

Through 14 years of recollecting I've stuck to the goal I had way back in 1998 to just get the twelve main ponies from Year 2 + Peachy and Lemon Drop (and accessories).  Hundreds of ponies have come into my life, but I always eventually sell them.  I like to keep it simple!

The big brother pony here. I have been a fan since I saw "Rescue at midnight castle' as a child. I saw several G1 episodes, then fell away from ponies as I got older.

Oh... how I wish I had been a board 'oldie moldy', that I had come back to the fandom before FiM. I would have loved to have made friends with all of you, and been here before the coming of the bronies (no offense). I so wish I had been here during the heyday of G3, When the fanbase was diffrent. All of the now-abandoned pony sites that deal with the G1 and G3 storyline from the 90's and 2000's make my heart ache at what I missed. T_T
